:00:11. > :00:15.The number of dead in the twin attacks in Norway rises to 92.

:00:15. > :00:21.Nearly all were killed when a gunman ran amok on an island summer

:00:21. > :00:25.camp. Police are searching for more victims.

:00:26. > :00:35.He started shooting at every single person, they were crying and

:00:36. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:39.screaming. People were falling over A 32-year-old Norwegian is charged.

:00:39. > :00:42.He's believed to have links to extreme right-wing groups. Norway's

:00:42. > :00:46.Prime Minister says the attacks are beyond comprehension, but urges the

:00:46. > :00:56.country not to cave into fear. And, remanded in custody, the nurse

:00:56. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:14.charged over the deaths of five Norway's Prime Minister says his

:01:14. > :01:18.country's way of life has been abused and attacked. More than 90

:01:18. > :01:21.people are now known to have died yesterday, seven in a car bomb in

:01:21. > :01:26.central Oslo, but the vast majority shot indiscriminately at a summer

:01:26. > :01:36.camp for young people on the island of Utoeya. Jon Sopel joins us now

:01:36. > :01:38.

:01:38. > :01:41.from Oslo. Flags are flying at half mast.

:01:41. > :01:46.People are wandering around the City somewhat bewildered by what

:01:46. > :01:49.has unfolded. There is broken glass on the streets. None of this

:01:49. > :01:59.captures the magnitude of the scale of the shock felt by the Norwegian

:01:59. > :02:00.

:02:00. > :02:08.people. Our first Report has some disturbing images.

:02:08. > :02:12.Gradually, the survivors are brought back from the island.

:02:12. > :02:21.Traumatised and probably scarred for life, they are the lucky ones.

:02:21. > :02:25.They are still alive. This is the beautiful island retreat, Utoeya,

:02:25. > :02:30.which area hosts a summer camp for hundreds of teenagers around the

:02:30. > :02:34.country. Earlier it seemed so perfect. The young members of the

:02:34. > :02:39.governing Labour Party gathered for days of political discussion and

:02:39. > :02:43.fun. But suddenly, yesterday afternoon, they were fleeing for

:02:43. > :02:50.their lives, hiding in the woods and buildings, as a man dressed as

:02:50. > :02:54.a police officer went on a shooting spree. Some have tried to swim away.

:02:54. > :03:01.But the cold water and distance forced most back to face the gunman

:03:01. > :03:08.with his automatic rifle once more. Many people died and I just had to

:03:08. > :03:14.shield myself behind them and pray he would not see me. I could feel

:03:14. > :03:19.his breath, I could feel the warmth from the barrel of the gun. But I

:03:19. > :03:24.did not move and that is what saved my life. Other survivors arriving

:03:24. > :03:31.back from the island described how they had been deceived by the gun

:03:31. > :03:34.man's police uniform. TRANSLATION: People were jumping out of windows

:03:35. > :03:39.and running in all directions, terrified for their lives. Most

:03:39. > :03:44.people ran towards the water, hiding behind stones and hills. He

:03:44. > :03:51.was dressed as a policeman, assuring he was helping us, saying,

:03:52. > :03:58.come here. He had a rifle to shoot at us, it was chaos.

:03:58. > :04:04.For most, caught up in the violence, it felt an eternity before police

:04:04. > :04:09.special forces finally came to the rescue. That was partly because so

:04:09. > :04:12.many police were still dealing with this. The aftermath of a huge car

:04:13. > :04:19.bomb detonated in front of the main government buildings in central

:04:19. > :04:26.Oslo. Detonating mid- afternoon yesterday, it killed and maimed in

:04:26. > :04:29.the heart of a capital known for its tranquillity. This is the man

:04:29. > :04:36.Norwegian media say has now been charged in connection with both

:04:36. > :04:40.attacks. A 32-year-old called Anders Breivik. He is alleged to

:04:40. > :04:46.hold extreme nationalist and Christian views. It is not clear if

:04:46. > :04:50.he was acting alone. Today, the Prime Minister came here to the

:04:50. > :04:55.area near the island where the survivors had been taken. To

:04:55. > :04:59.reassure, comfort and deliver a strong message.

:04:59. > :05:06.TRANSLATION: Of we must take control of Utoeya and show young

:05:06. > :05:11.people can be engaged, that young people can be trusted in society in

:05:11. > :05:17.debating politics, and those who try to scare us shall not win.

:05:17. > :05:23.But still, the grief and shock continue. Heightened by the news

:05:23. > :05:26.that many young people are still missing. So, people here in this

:05:26. > :05:30.community as in the rest of the country are still waiting to find

:05:31. > :05:36.out exactly how many people were killed in the shooting incident.

:05:36. > :05:42.They also want to know why would a gunman opened fire on young people

:05:42. > :05:45.enjoying a summer camp in a beautiful location like this.

:05:45. > :05:55.As we've heard, police have charged, a 32-year-old Norwegian man with

:05:55. > :06:03.

:06:03. > :06:07.both attacks. Who is he a what drove him to such carnage?

:06:07. > :06:14.Coming to terms with Norway's tragedy. Now the hard questions.

:06:14. > :06:19.How could such a tranquil society produce such wilful carnage? The

:06:19. > :06:24.suspect in custody has been named by a Norwegian media as a Anders

:06:24. > :06:29.Breivik. 32 years old, born and grew up in Norway, he has been

:06:29. > :06:35.charged with acts of terrorism. is not known by the police before.

:06:35. > :06:43.So, we have not arrested him before or anything like that. On his

:06:43. > :06:47.website as you have probably seen, he calls himself a Christian and

:06:48. > :06:51.going to the right. Police searched the suspects apartment within hours

:06:51. > :06:55.of the shooting, hunting for clues. They are starting to build up a

:06:55. > :06:59.picture of a man with deeply intolerant views towards

:06:59. > :07:05.immigration and what he saw as his government's lax policies. His

:07:05. > :07:10.networking page on Facebook only recently set up names his interests

:07:10. > :07:14.as body-building and freemasonry. His account on Twitter posts in a

:07:15. > :07:19.quote from John Stuart Mill saying, one person with a belief is equal

:07:19. > :07:23.to the force of 100,000 who have only interests. Police also

:07:23. > :07:29.searched the farm he set up outside Oslo to grow fruit and vegetables.

:07:29. > :07:35.It is alleged he bought six tons of fertiliser, a possible explosive

:07:35. > :07:39.ingredient. In the shattered centre of the Norwegian capital, the Army

:07:39. > :07:43.has been deployed. Britain amongst other nations has offered

:07:44. > :07:47.intelligence help. Now this appears to be a case of home-grown

:07:47. > :07:53.political extremism, it is more a case of what others can learn from

:07:53. > :07:57.Norway's tragedy. We will want to make sure we learn any lessons

:07:57. > :08:01.there are about how to be more secure against horrific outrages

:08:01. > :08:06.like this. That is something we can discuss at the National Security

:08:06. > :08:10.Council on Monday. For Norway, there is now a burning question.

:08:10. > :08:18.Were these the axe of a lone fanatic or are there other right-

:08:18. > :08:27.wing extremists waiting to copy his bloody example? Steve Rosenberg

:08:27. > :08:37.joins us. You've been able to get close to the island. What did you

:08:37. > :08:38.

:08:38. > :08:45.see? A police but would not let us get

:08:45. > :08:49.any closer but we could clearly see body bags still on the island. I

:08:49. > :08:53.counted eight body-bags there. And you could see divers in the lake,

:08:53. > :09:03.searching for more bodies, a sign that the death toll could well

:09:03. > :09:05.

:09:05. > :09:11.increase. How are people coping there?

:09:11. > :09:16.It is an enormous shock for people in this village. Especially for the

:09:16. > :09:20.holiday makers. This is a popular holiday destination in Norway. I

:09:20. > :09:25.spoke to some people on an island nearby who heard the shots bringing

:09:25. > :09:30.out yesterday. They jumped on a boat to help rescue people. An

:09:30. > :09:40.enormous shock, especially that this massacre was carried out not

:09:40. > :09:41.

:09:41. > :09:44.by international terror groups but by a Norwegian citizen.

:09:44. > :09:47.The back to you in the studio in London. There's lots more

:09:48. > :09:51.information and analysis of the attacks on the BBC News website.

:09:51. > :09:56.Including a special live page with the latest details. That's at

:09:56. > :09:59.bbc.co.uk/news. In other news today: A nurse,

:10:00. > :10:02.charged in connection with the deaths of five patients at Stepping

:10:02. > :10:05.Hill Hospital in Stockport, has been remanded in custody. Rebecca

:10:05. > :10:10.Leighton appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court this morning.

:10:10. > :10:16.She's alleged to have tampered with medical products, at the hospital.

:10:16. > :10:23.Our correspondent Phil Bodmer is at the hospital now.

:10:23. > :10:29.Give us the latest? Security remained tight here this

:10:29. > :10:32.evening, A41 year-old man remains in a critical condition in hospital.

:10:32. > :10:39.Rebecca Leighton appeared at Manchester magistrates court

:10:39. > :10:43.earlier today. During that hearing, she faced seven charges. They go as

:10:54. > :10:59.is endangered. They relate to the deaths of five patients. Family and

:10:59. > :11:04.friends gathered at the court appearance to see what would happen,

:11:04. > :11:09.including her boy friend. She was originally arrested on suspicion of

:11:09. > :11:14.murder on Wednesday. Police say four patients received saline

:11:14. > :11:18.contaminated with insulin which can lead to low blood sugar levels in

:11:18. > :11:21.patients. Post mortem examinations are still being carried out to

:11:21. > :11:31.establish the cause of death. Rebecca Leighton was remanded in

:11:31. > :11:34.

:11:41. > :11:44.Prime Minister and the Lord Chief Justice that he has attended

:11:44. > :11:47.meetings with Rupert Murdoch's son- in-law. Downing Street sources have

:11:47. > :11:49.confirmed that Lord Justice Leveson met Matthew Freud while he was

:11:50. > :11:54.chairman of the sentencing council which advises the government on

:11:54. > :11:57.sentencing policy. A high speed train in eastern China

:11:57. > :11:59.has been derailed, with two carriages falling off a bridge into

:12:00. > :12:05.a river. The train was travelling from the

:12:05. > :12:08.city of Hangzhou to Wenzhou when the derailment happened.

:12:08. > :12:11.A rally's been held, in Derby to urge the government to rethink its

:12:11. > :12:14.decision to give a major rail contract to a foreign company.

:12:14. > :12:19.Thousands took part, following the announcement by the train maker

:12:19. > :12:22.Bombardier that it's planning to cut 1,400 jobs in the city. The

:12:22. > :12:27.company lost the lucrative deal to build carriages for the new

:12:27. > :12:34.Thameslink rail service to the German firm, Siemens.

:12:34. > :12:39.A look at today's sport. India are struggling in reply to

:12:39. > :12:43.England's total of 478 at Lord's. They are currently 224 for five, on

:12:43. > :12:46.the third day of the first Test. Stuart Broad justified his

:12:46. > :12:48.selection by dismissing both openers, and the prized wicket of

:12:48. > :12:56.Sachin Tendulkar who was looking to score his 100th, international

:12:56. > :12:59.century. The new Scottish Premier League

:12:59. > :13:03.season is underway and title holders Rangers fought back from a

:13:03. > :13:13.goal down to draw 1-1 with Hearts. David Obua put Hearts ahead. But
