:00:18. > :00:22.Norway is engulfed in grief as the number of dead approaches 100.

:00:23. > :00:29.As victims of the attacks are remembered, the Prime Minister

:00:29. > :00:36.speaks of a national tragedy. There are emotional scenes as Norway's

:00:36. > :00:42.King and Queen join in the sorrow. More emerges about the gunman's

:00:42. > :00:49.beliefs and the way he targeted his victims. People ran from him. He

:00:49. > :00:56.walked. Didn't run. He walked slowly. He thought, "You may run,

:00:56. > :01:02.you can't hide." He yelled, "This is the day you're going to die."

:01:02. > :01:08.We'll have the latest from Oslo. Also on the programme: Tributes to

:01:08. > :01:12.Amy Winehouse. Her family say she leaves a gaping hole in their lives.

:01:12. > :01:18.And Lewis Hamilton produces a momental drive to take his second

:01:18. > :01:23.win of the season in the German Grand Prix.

:01:23. > :01:32.-- monumental drive to take his second win of the season in the

:01:32. > :01:36.German Grand Prix. Good evening memorial services have

:01:36. > :01:41.taken place across Norway to remember the 98 people who are

:01:41. > :01:45.thought to have died in Friday's car bomb and mass shooting T man

:01:45. > :01:49.who has been charged has told police he acted alone. Let's join

:01:49. > :01:54.Jon Sopel, who is in Oslo this evening.

:01:54. > :01:59.Thank you very much indeed. It has been raining none stop here this

:01:59. > :02:05.afternoon. Beyond that a sea of umbrellas and raincoats. There is

:02:05. > :02:09.now a carpet of flowers, of candles, of flags. Earlier, as that memorial

:02:09. > :02:15.service ended, there was almost unbearable grief as many of the

:02:15. > :02:19.survivors from Utoeya Island gathered by the flowers and hugged

:02:19. > :02:24.each other and wailed. That sound echoed around the square, filled

:02:24. > :02:30.with people who wanted to lend support to those who were suffering.

:02:30. > :02:34.Our first report is from our correspondent Steve Rosenberg. This

:02:34. > :02:38.is a nation united in grief and still in shock.

:02:38. > :02:44.At Oslo Cathedral today they prayed for the victims of Friday's terror

:02:44. > :02:52.attacks, the bomb blast and the youth camp massacre. In the

:02:52. > :02:55.congregation and moved to tears were the King and Queen of Norway.

:02:55. > :03:03.Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said he knew many of the victims

:03:03. > :03:08.personally. Each and every one of those who has gone, is a tragedy,

:03:08. > :03:16.he said. Together, it amounts to a national

:03:16. > :03:21.tragedy. It's not just the scale of the

:03:21. > :03:26.crime that has shaken Norway, it's the realisation that it was a

:03:26. > :03:31.Norwegian citizen who did the killing. Outside the cathedral were

:03:31. > :03:39.some of those who'd survived the shooting on the island. It was like,

:03:39. > :03:47.I have no words, the feeling that you were going to die and the fear

:03:47. > :03:50.that I heard so many shots of this gun. He never stopped shooting.

:03:50. > :03:54.gunman, Anders Behring Breivik shot and injured Adrian Pracon, a

:03:54. > :04:02.tkwrouth leader at the camp, -- youth leader at the camp, but he

:04:02. > :04:07.managed to escape. He pointed the machine gun at me. I begged him,

:04:07. > :04:11."Please don't kill me. Stop." I don't know if he had some sympathy

:04:11. > :04:18.or just couldn't see the pleasure of killing one person instead of a

:04:18. > :04:22.group of people. He spared me that. Away from Oslo, this is the lake

:04:22. > :04:29.where the shooting happened. We were taken to the scene of the

:04:29. > :04:34.attack. We spotted a team of drivers, a -- divers, a grime sign

:04:34. > :04:38.there could be more victims. We approached 100 metres of what had

:04:38. > :04:44.been a holiday camp. Some people tried to hide behind buildings,

:04:44. > :04:48.only to be discovered and killed. Some of the bodies of the victims

:04:48. > :04:53.are still here, that is because the police want to build up a detailed

:04:54. > :05:01.picture of the gunman's movements. A police boat signalled we'd come

:05:01. > :05:06.too close, it was time to leave. On the island opposite we met this man,

:05:06. > :05:11.who was returning to his holiday cottage. When he heard the shooting

:05:11. > :05:16.he took his old boat and sailed to the camp to rescue people. He was

:05:16. > :05:20.there before the police. I saw people on the shore of Utoeya

:05:20. > :05:24.waving at us. We went in there. went to the island when the gunman

:05:24. > :05:32.was still at large? We thought about that later. He was at large

:05:32. > :05:42.at the time we were there. We didn't think about that. It's one

:05:42. > :05:47.story of heroism, among so many nightmares.

:05:47. > :05:52.Well, Anders Behring Breivik, the man in police custody has admitted

:05:52. > :05:55.the bombing in Oslo and the island shootings. He said he believed the

:05:55. > :05:59.attacks were gruesome, but necessary. More has been emerging

:05:59. > :06:07.throughout the day of the political iedloling that drove him to kill so

:06:07. > :06:10.many. Until 48 hours ago, even in Norway

:06:10. > :06:17.few people had heard of Anders Behring Breivik. Today, his is one

:06:17. > :06:22.of the most infamous faces in the world. The face of a man who wanted

:06:22. > :06:29.to transform society and whose chosen method was mass murder. His

:06:29. > :06:31.lawyer has been on Norwegian television to explain his motives.

:06:31. > :06:37.TRANSLATION: What he said is he wanted a change of society and this

:06:37. > :06:42.in his view, in his head must happen through a revolution. Just

:06:42. > :06:52.before the attacks Anders Behring Breivik posted a 1500-page

:06:52. > :07:11.

:07:11. > :07:16.Within hours the car bomb had exploded in Oslo. Then came the

:07:16. > :07:20.rampage through the summer camp by a gunman who said he wanted to

:07:20. > :07:24.bring about the foremost conservative revolutionary movement

:07:24. > :07:29.in Western Europe. What people here are struggling to comprehend is

:07:29. > :07:33.that Anders Behring Breivik was prepared to put his extremist

:07:33. > :07:36.ideology into practise with such murderous consequences, that he

:07:36. > :07:41.could come to a tranquil setting like this, for example, and not

:07:41. > :07:48.only start shooting but carry on shueting for an hour and a --

:07:48. > :07:53.shooting for an hour-and-a-half until nearly 100 of his countrymen

:07:54. > :08:00.were dead. He rented this farm. Bags of fertiliser, which can be

:08:00. > :08:05.used to make bombs were found piled up here.

:08:05. > :08:09.He didn't farm the land properly, says a neighbour. He received a lot

:08:09. > :08:14.of fertiliser, but had not used all of it on the land. After the

:08:14. > :08:19.attacks more images were found on the internet. One showed him in a

:08:19. > :08:28.wetsuit brandishing a weapon. It appears the warning signs had been

:08:28. > :08:32.there, but no-one spotted them. And tomorrow promises to be another

:08:32. > :08:37.uncomfortable day for Norwegians because Breivik has promised he

:08:37. > :08:42.will explain something that most Norwegians think is totally

:08:42. > :08:45.inexplicable. Jon, you have heard so many different voices in Oslo,

:08:45. > :08:51.is there something in particular that people are focusing on as they

:08:51. > :08:57.try to make sense of this? thing which has struck me,,

:08:57. > :09:01.speaking to different people from different walks of life is coming

:09:01. > :09:06.together in the face of such extraordinary adversity. If you

:09:06. > :09:10.look at the people behind me, all different age groups, different

:09:10. > :09:20.nationalities, different religions. People coming over to us saying, "I

:09:20. > :09:25.am a Muslim, I am standing here as a Norwegian." Norway has until...

:09:25. > :09:28.Been seen as a happy, outward looking, multi-cultural society.

:09:28. > :09:32.That is something the man accused said he wants to destroy. The

:09:32. > :09:36.response of these people is he's not going to be allowed to do it.

:09:36. > :09:40.Thank you. In other news, the Business

:09:40. > :09:43.Secretary has blamed what he called right wing nutters in the United

:09:43. > :09:47.States for refusing to reach a compromise over its debt crisis.

:09:47. > :09:51.Speaking on BBC One this morning, Mr Cable said the issue was a

:09:51. > :09:56.bigger risk to the global economy than the problems in the eurozone.

:09:56. > :10:02.Well, let's get the latest between Republicans and Democrats in

:10:02. > :10:05.Washington. Is there any sign they are edging close to a deal? Well,

:10:05. > :10:09.Michelle, President Obama's officials have been out on the

:10:09. > :10:15.television talk shows saying they hope it is posstobl do a deal by

:10:15. > :10:20.the time -- possible to do a deal by the time Asian markets open in

:10:20. > :10:25.seven hours' time. Many are getting rattled. This is like a couple

:10:25. > :10:29.Maxing out on their joint credit card. Where they need to

:10:29. > :10:33.temporarily increase borrowing limits to sort out their financial

:10:33. > :10:37.problems. This was an unlikely couple who never agreed on much.

:10:37. > :10:42.President Obama and his Democrats say there has to be a mixture of

:10:42. > :10:46.spending cuts and tax increases. The Republican opponents, including

:10:46. > :10:51.a hard-line element say they will only expect -- accept spending cuts.

:10:51. > :10:55.If they cannot agree in a week's time, no-one is sure what will

:10:55. > :11:00.happen, but it could lead to the world tipping back into recession.

:11:00. > :11:06.Thank you. Meanwhile, in Madrid thousands have

:11:06. > :11:09.gathered to protest against Spanish Government's austerity cuts. Many

:11:09. > :11:12.calling themselves The Indignants had marched for weeks to get to the

:11:12. > :11:17.capital. They are angry at how the Government plans to reduce Spain's

:11:17. > :11:20.deficit. The country has the highest rate of unemployment in the

:11:20. > :11:24.eurozone. The family of Amy Winehouse say they have been left

:11:24. > :11:27.bereft by the young singer's sudden death. The 27-year-old was found

:11:27. > :11:37.dead at her home in London yesterday afternoon. It is still

:11:37. > :11:37.

:11:37. > :11:41.not known how she died. Those utterly distinctive coal-rimed eyes,

:11:41. > :11:48.Nestleed in what has become a shrine to Amy Winehouse. The hope

:11:48. > :11:52.had been this would be the summer of her come-back tour. But after

:11:52. > :11:56.this chaotic performance in Serbia, it was clear she wasn't fit to

:11:56. > :11:59.perform. There was no sense of crisis, her father, who was a close

:12:00. > :12:03.presence during her many ups and downs had been in New York when he

:12:04. > :12:08.heard the news. Today, he returned to London. As

:12:08. > :12:12.you can see, there are hundreds now gathered outside his daughter's

:12:12. > :12:22.home paying their last respects. The family issued a brief statement,

:12:22. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:36.Among the many people who tried to help during her years of addiction,

:12:36. > :12:42.there was praise for what they had done, the support she had received

:12:42. > :12:46.from her father. He really tried to do everything possible and the

:12:46. > :12:50.record company did too. I worked with Ray, her manager and others

:12:50. > :12:54.around her. They couldn't have done more to help her. The death though

:12:54. > :12:58.is still unexplained. An examination will be carried out

:12:58. > :13:08.this week. For the fans, the focus was the loss of the voice, the

:13:08. > :13:15.talent, a life ended at just 27. Let's turn to a busy day in sports

:13:15. > :13:18.news now. Lewis Hamilton has won the German Grand Prix ahead of

:13:18. > :13:23.Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber. Sebastian Vettel failed to finish

:13:23. > :13:32.on the podium for the first time this season. But he still leads the

:13:32. > :13:35.Races. Lewis Hamilton appeared to be falling out of love with McLaren

:13:35. > :13:39.this season. He complained they couldn't give him a good enough

:13:39. > :13:45.challenge for honours. He was accused of flirting the Red Bull

:13:45. > :13:50.team. That all changed this weekend. He said the qualifying lap was one

:13:50. > :13:54.of his best ever. His start from second on the grid was pretty good

:13:54. > :13:58.too. He used all his giel to stay ahead

:13:58. > :14:01.of Mark Webber. Meanwhile, world champion Sebastian

:14:01. > :14:05.Vettel was having a very rare bad day.

:14:05. > :14:11.First Fernando Alonso passed him with ease, then this put pay to any

:14:11. > :14:15.chance of victory in front of his home fans. A fourth place finish

:14:15. > :14:20.his -- is his worst result this season. Hamilton and Webber fought

:14:20. > :14:23.it out for victory and swapped the lead around the pit swaps. Just to

:14:23. > :14:30.spice things up, Alonso was getting into the mix. Hamilton got the

:14:30. > :14:36.better of him in the end. His McLaren team-mate was disappointed

:14:36. > :14:40.after being forced to retire for the second race in a row. Webber

:14:40. > :14:45.handed victory to Hamilton by four seconds from Alonso. The love

:14:45. > :14:50.affair was rekindled. Hamilton says it was one of his

:14:50. > :14:54.best ever races. It may be too little, too late for

:14:54. > :14:59.his hopes of winning a second world title. Despite the victory moving

:14:59. > :15:05.him up to third in the Drivers's Championship, he trails Vettel by

:15:05. > :15:10.83 2 points. -- 82 points. Mark Cavendish is the

:15:10. > :15:13.first British rider to claim the green sprint Jersey at the Tour de

:15:13. > :15:17.France. After three gruelling weeks of

:15:17. > :15:21.racing, he crossed the line ahead of the race on the Champs-Elysees

:15:21. > :15:25.to claim his fifth stage win of this year's tour and his place on

:15:25. > :15:30.the podium. Cadel Evans was the first

:15:30. > :15:36.Australian to take the overall title and the famous yellow Jersey.

:15:36. > :15:45.England have set India a target of 458 to win the first Test at Lords,

:15:45. > :15:51.despite a batting collapse. Ishant Sharma led the Indian charge. A

:15:51. > :15:55.century from Matt Prior and 74 from Stuart Broad left India with an

:15:55. > :16:00.improbable target for victory on the final day. Celtic have their

:16:00. > :16:04.Scottish Premier League campaign off to a winning start. They beat
