:00:25. > :00:30.leaders have condemned the destruction.

:00:30. > :00:35.This is a disgrace. So many of my constituents have said to me - as I

:01:02. > :01:08.Wembley. -- Manchester United beat

:01:08. > :01:12.Manchester City at Wembley. Hello. Good evening. Nearly 50

:01:12. > :01:17.people are in police custody this evening after rioters attacked

:01:17. > :01:20.police, set fire to buildings and looted shops in Tottenham, North

:01:20. > :01:24.London. 29 people were injured, most of them police officers. The

:01:24. > :01:28.trouble developed after a peaceful protest about the death of a local

:01:28. > :01:33.man, Mark Duggan, who was shot dead by police on Thursday. Downing

:01:33. > :01:39.Street has described the rioting as "utterly unacceptable." Our

:01:39. > :01:42.correspondent has been monitoring events.

:01:42. > :01:46.This was Tottenham high Road last night.

:01:46. > :01:56.At one end, officers in riot gear. At the other, the young men they

:01:56. > :01:58.

:01:58. > :02:00.are trying to police. This was the main shopping street,

:02:00. > :02:07.the commercial heart of the community, turned into a battle

:02:07. > :02:16.zone. Bricks, firecrackers and flames

:02:16. > :02:21.filled the Knight Air. Shops and homes were destroyed.

:02:21. > :02:25.More than two dozen police officers hurt.

:02:25. > :02:35.From a vantage point, high in a building, running battles could be

:02:35. > :02:38.

:02:38. > :02:42.seen on the street below. This followed a peaceful protest at

:02:42. > :02:51.the death of a man in a police shooting last week. There's no

:02:51. > :02:55.question, the police were targets Here, an empty squad car was

:02:55. > :03:05.attacked before being set ablaze. There was vandalism and looting too.

:03:05. > :03:10.Eyewitnesses said it was an far ki. -- anarchy. PC World, there is

:03:10. > :03:16.nothing left in that shop. Even several hours after the violence

:03:16. > :03:19.began, the first light, loots went on. Here, people made off with

:03:19. > :03:25.clothing. Today, police rejected claims they had been slow to catch

:03:25. > :03:31.up we vents and had not been prepared -- we vents and had not

:03:31. > :03:35.been prepared enough. We have a dignified response to that. We

:03:35. > :03:39.allowed that protest to take place. Once that extreme violence and it

:03:39. > :03:44.could not be anticipated on that scale, occurred, we moved the

:03:44. > :03:46.appropriate level of resources in.S A residents pick through the

:03:46. > :03:52.wreckage of their neighbourhood, the Government praised the police

:03:52. > :03:58.and said the rioters would feel the full force of the law. The looting

:03:58. > :04:02.and vandalism drew anger from the local MP, who described it as an

:04:02. > :04:06.assault on the community. We need restraint and calm. I say to those

:04:06. > :04:13.who wanted to come to Tottenham to cause violence and disturbance to

:04:13. > :04:16.stay away. We don't need you. We don't want 25 years of re-

:04:16. > :04:22.building community and trust destroyed because of mindless

:04:22. > :04:28.nonsense. Last night, Tottenham paid a heavy

:04:28. > :04:32.price. It is one of London's poorest areas and can il-afford the

:04:32. > :04:35.damage this has done to community and livelihood. Well, this evening,

:04:36. > :04:41.the family of the man who was shot by the police on Thursday, Mark

:04:41. > :04:44.Duggan, said they did not condone the rioting. His shooting is being

:04:44. > :04:51.investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

:04:51. > :04:55.Before the trouble flared they had taken part in a peaceful march to

:04:55. > :05:02.Tottenham police station from Broadwater Farm.

:05:02. > :05:06.Our home affairs correspondent sent this report from Broadwater Farm.

:05:06. > :05:11.The Broadwater Farm estate, the location which was the starting

:05:11. > :05:16.point for last night's events. It was from here that the protest

:05:16. > :05:21.march set off. Many here knew Mark Duggan, the man who was shot by

:05:21. > :05:25.police. They killed him, you know. You know, because they are a law to

:05:25. > :05:29.themselves they can put all this in the paper saying he was this, he

:05:29. > :05:35.was that. You know. I don't see my friend being in the car and

:05:35. > :05:39.surrounded by armed police and he's going to jump out and open fire on

:05:39. > :05:43.armed police. That doesn't make sense. 26 years ago, Broadwater

:05:43. > :05:50.Farm became the most infamous estate in the country. Then, as now,

:05:50. > :06:00.it was a death which become a trigger for the disturbances.

:06:00. > :06:03.Cynthia died as police, who had arrested her son searched her home.

:06:03. > :06:07.People who have lived here for a long time have said they are upset

:06:07. > :06:12.that it is back in the news for negative reasons. Most will not go

:06:12. > :06:17.on camera. Events of the last few days have sparked a debate about

:06:17. > :06:21.the wider issues here. There's a break down of

:06:21. > :06:25.communication. It has to be fixed. Among those who know the Tottenham

:06:25. > :06:29.area well is Sonia, who didn't want to give her full name.

:06:29. > :06:33.There's young people that's never worked. They've left school. They

:06:33. > :06:38.are this their late 20's and they've never had a job. It is not

:06:38. > :06:43.because they don't want to work. Others here are angry at outsiders,

:06:43. > :06:47.who they say came into the area because they wanted to join the mob

:06:47. > :06:52.violence. I have seen people here who I have never seen in my life. I

:06:52. > :06:56.have said to people I honestly believe there was one or two

:06:56. > :07:03.anarchists. Opportunists were bound to come down. They acknowledge that

:07:03. > :07:06.some young locals have little to do as the council cuts bite. One of

:07:06. > :07:10.the best youth facilities in our area, it is now shut down. They

:07:10. > :07:15.allowed people like myself to use their, and hold youth projects

:07:15. > :07:21.there. Now it is closed down. Where do we use? Then there are

:07:21. > :07:23.relationships with the police. police haven't really communicated

:07:23. > :07:27.directly with the youth here. It's caused the problem today. It feels

:07:27. > :07:32.like they have no word, no voice. The voice they think is good, but

:07:32. > :07:36.is wrong, is smashing up things. The family of Mark Duggan, the man

:07:36. > :07:41.who was shot by police say they do not condone the actions taken

:07:41. > :07:47.overnight in his name. They say they realise people are frustrated

:07:47. > :07:53.and angry. They have appealed for an end to the violence. M Well, our

:07:53. > :07:57.correspondent is there now. What is happening there this evening?

:07:57. > :08:00.Jane, a fairly subdued atmosphere in this part of North London this

:08:00. > :08:04.evening. People are coming to terms with the night of rioting which

:08:04. > :08:07.caused such devastation on their high street. Much of that street is

:08:07. > :08:10.in fact a crime scene, about half a mile of it, as police officers

:08:10. > :08:15.continue their investigations. They will be here all night. Crow can

:08:15. > :08:22.probably see the remains of the two burnt-out police cars. The question

:08:22. > :08:24.for police, community leaders and politician is; was this a peaceful

:08:24. > :08:29.protest hijacked by criminal elements? Was it about something

:08:29. > :08:34.more fundamental? It will take days, weeks and months of calm reflection

:08:34. > :08:38.until the answer to that is known. Thank you. Now, the rest of the

:08:38. > :08:43.day's news. And the NATO-led forces in Afghanistan say four of their

:08:43. > :08:47.soldiers have been killed in two separate attacks. Two French

:08:47. > :08:52.soldiers died. Five were wounded when they came under fire from

:08:52. > :08:58.insurger gents. Two others were killed in the -- insurgents. Two

:08:58. > :09:01.others were killed. Officials from the European Central Bank are

:09:01. > :09:05.holding talks to look at ways to stop the international debt crisis

:09:05. > :09:09.spreading and steady the markets before they open on Monday morning.

:09:09. > :09:13.Our business correspondent is with That crucial meeting really. We

:09:13. > :09:19.think it is underway now? understand it has started T reason

:09:19. > :09:24.they are there is because the cost of borrowing for Italian bonds has

:09:24. > :09:28.reached such a level it is in need of a bail out like Ireland and

:09:29. > :09:32.Greece, et cetera. They think by snapping up Italian bonds that will

:09:32. > :09:37.get the cost of borrowing down and remove the need. There is a split

:09:37. > :09:43.in the council. The Germans are nervous about giving money towards

:09:43. > :09:45.Italy before they have shown they can get their debt mountain down.

:09:46. > :09:50.Standard & Poor's downgraded the United States. There is a lot to

:09:50. > :09:56.talk about. And before the markets open. So much anxiety. You look at

:09:56. > :10:00.theest, some will open in only a few hours. 1.5 trillion was wiped

:10:00. > :10:06.off shares last week. We don't know what the markets will do. They may

:10:06. > :10:11.shrug off the US downgrade. They may be forced to sell off non-

:10:11. > :10:17.triple-A assets. They are not risk- free. They may dive into the gold

:10:17. > :10:20.or Swiss franc or UK Government bonds. We will know in a few hours.

:10:20. > :10:26.Opposition activists in Syria say more than 75 people have been

:10:26. > :10:30.killed in two towns, as tanks and troops moved against protestors. In

:10:30. > :10:35.Deir al-Zour in the north-east of the country, it is reported at

:10:35. > :10:42.least 50 people died when soldiers stormed the city just after dawn.

:10:42. > :10:48.Amateur video, which cannot be verified shows plumes of smoke and

:10:48. > :10:51.the sound of explosions. Foreign journalists are banned, but Jim

:10:51. > :10:57.Muir has been following development from neighbouring Lebanon. That is

:10:57. > :11:01.a grim toll. What more do we know? Well, as you say a grim toll. It

:11:01. > :11:07.looks like a repetition of what happened in what ma in central

:11:07. > :11:11.Syria a few -- in Hama in central Syria a few days earlier. One local

:11:11. > :11:14.account said what was happening in one of the suburbs of Deir al-Zour

:11:15. > :11:19.amounted to a real massacre, the whole place was completely

:11:19. > :11:23.surrounded and cut off with shelling and people going door-to-

:11:23. > :11:30.door storming houses and so on. Of course this is all unverified

:11:30. > :11:33.information. We cannot be there. At the same time, we've had reports of

:11:33. > :11:37.similar trouble in central Syria, with tanks and troops going in

:11:37. > :11:42.there. 20 people killed in that area too. A very high death tally

:11:42. > :11:48.for one day. All this coming as diplomatic pressures and outside

:11:48. > :11:52.pressures on Syria being ramped up, especially from Turkey, in the

:11:52. > :11:57.north, which is influential in northern Syria. The Turkish Prime

:11:57. > :12:00.Minister sending his Foreign Minister to damn mass ka, --

:12:00. > :12:05.Damascus. Not much of a meeting of minds

:12:05. > :12:10.there. Thank you. Two members of an

:12:10. > :12:17.expedition injured in a polar bear attack in Norway in which a 17-

:12:17. > :12:21.year-old boy were killed have returned to the UK.

:12:21. > :12:25.They were flown home. Two other members of the party, who were more

:12:25. > :12:29.severely hurt remain in hospital in Norway. An investigation is

:12:29. > :12:32.underway in Afghanistan into the crash of a Chinook helicopter which

:12:32. > :12:38.the Taliban claimed to have shot down. The crash site, south-west of

:12:38. > :12:42.the capital, Kabul, has been sealed off, as the wreckage is recovered.

:12:42. > :12:48.It was the biggest single loss for American forces in the ten-year

:12:48. > :12:58.conflict. 38 people died, more than half of them were members of an

:12:58. > :13:02.elite special force, the Navy SEALs. Now to sports news. Manchester

:13:02. > :13:06.United have beaten Manchester City at Wembley. The Community Shield is

:13:06. > :13:16.sometimes regarded as a meaningless match, but not today. United came

:13:16. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:22.from 2-0 down to win in injury time. The volume turned up.

:13:22. > :13:26.Like most concerts, finding personal space was tough, until

:13:27. > :13:31.Jolean Lescott located a spot, with devastating effect. It was a goal

:13:32. > :13:40.few had seen coming. The same could be said for their second. This, the

:13:40. > :13:45.best moment for City. Even the keeper seemed surprised. His team

:13:45. > :13:54.weren't stunned though. Another new recruit, Ashley Young, set up Chris

:13:54. > :13:58.Smalling for the come back. Nani completed City's bewilderment.

:13:58. > :14:04.Still, they were set to hold on for penalties, until the ultimate

:14:04. > :14:10.moment of confusion, with a minute left.

:14:10. > :14:16.Nani knew what he was doing. So much for just being pre-season.

:14:16. > :14:18.Proof that Manchester United never know when they are beaten. City

:14:18. > :14:23.still looking enviously over the fence.

:14:23. > :14:26.West Ham have started life in the championship with defeat at home to

:14:26. > :14:31.Cardiff City, after their relegation from the Premier League,

:14:31. > :14:34.the Hammers are favourite to go back up. They dominated the match,

:14:34. > :14:39.but could not score. Cardiff stole it in injury time. Kenny Miller

:14:39. > :14:46.with the winner. There were two games in the Scottish Premier

:14:46. > :14:50.League, Motherwell against Hearts was goalless. Celtic's defender,

:14:50. > :15:00.Emilio Izaguirre, broke his ankle in the first half at Pittodrie.

:15:00. > :15:01.

:15:01. > :15:06.Anthony Stokes got the game's only goal. It makes it 2-2 for Celtic.

:15:06. > :15:12.Today's challenge cup semi-final between Castleford tigers and leads

:15:12. > :15:19.Rhinos went to extra time. Kevin Sinfield had another kick to

:15:19. > :15:21.win it. Leeds winning 10-8. Into the

:15:21. > :15:27.Wembley final against Wigan in three weeks' time.

:15:27. > :15:31.It has been a great weekend for British triathletes. Helen Jenkins

:15:31. > :15:37.won yesterday. Alistair Brownlee won today. It is his third win

:15:37. > :15:41.after five events of the World Triathlon Series.

:15:41. > :15:46.After that 1500 metre swim and 40kms on the bike, Brownlee took

:15:46. > :15:50.complete control in the 10km run. He was able to enjoy the home
