:00:18. > :00:21.Good afternoon. Scotland Yard say 26 officers were injured in

:00:21. > :00:24.violence last night in north London. More than 40 people were arrested

:00:24. > :00:33.after buildings were set on fire, shops were looted, and police

:00:33. > :00:42.officers were attacked in Tottenham. The disturbances began after a

:00:42. > :00:48.peaceful protest about the fatal shooting by police last week. A

:00:48. > :00:55.double-decker bus in flames on Tottenham High Street. Shops, too,

:00:55. > :01:03.set ablaze by rioters. Firecrackers and bricks were hurled at police

:01:03. > :01:06.lines. Among those injured, were 26 police officers. Even as horses

:01:06. > :01:11.were sent in to scatter the rioters, parts of Tottenham were being

:01:11. > :01:15.destroyed. The violence followed what had been a peaceful protest

:01:15. > :01:21.earlier in the day at the police shooting of a local man last week

:01:21. > :01:26.who had died from his injuries. kept a dignified response to that.

:01:26. > :01:30.We're allowed that protest to take place. However, once and extreme

:01:30. > :01:33.violence, and it was violence that could not be anticipated on that

:01:33. > :01:39.scale, ones that occurred we moved the appropriate level of resources

:01:39. > :01:45.in. The target of the anger last night was the police. And then the

:01:45. > :01:48.squad car is attacked here before being set ablaze. Community groups

:01:48. > :01:56.said that relations with the police had deteriorated ahead of last

:01:56. > :02:00.night. The local MP appealed for calm. We now need restraint and

:02:00. > :02:06.calm. I say to those that wanted to come to Tottenham to cause violence

:02:06. > :02:10.and disturbing to stay away. We don't need you. We don't want 25

:02:10. > :02:16.years of rebuilding community and trust destroyed because of mindless

:02:16. > :02:21.nonsense. On the streets, there is now an eerie calm, as residence

:02:21. > :02:27.inspect the damage. Tottenham is one of London's poorest areas and

:02:27. > :02:34.last night it paid a heavy price. Let's go live to Tottenham and our

:02:34. > :02:39.reporter. Bring as up-to-date with the latest developments. We had

:02:39. > :02:43.that statement from the local MP in the last half an hour. He was

:02:43. > :02:46.extremely angry, I suppose is the right word, against the people

:02:46. > :02:50.responsible for this. He blamed it on a minority from outside the

:02:50. > :02:54.Tottenham area. He said they came here and took advantage of a

:02:54. > :02:58.sensitive subject. This afternoon this is still cordoned off by

:02:58. > :03:01.police. You cannot go down here but you can see the signs of what

:03:01. > :03:06.happened. There were bricks and glass all over the floor. Down

:03:07. > :03:10.there is a burnt-out police car, one of three set alight, and also a

:03:10. > :03:13.double-decker bus. Fire officers are down there as well because this

:03:13. > :03:16.is not only a criminal investigation but in terms of

:03:16. > :03:21.safety they have to work out of people can be allowed into their

:03:21. > :03:25.homes. Lot of people live above the shops on that road which were set

:03:25. > :03:28.on fire and they have to figure out if people can get back inside.

:03:28. > :03:31.Officials from the world's major economies have been taking part in

:03:31. > :03:34.emergency discussions about how to contain the debt crisis in the

:03:34. > :03:36.eurozone that's led to turmoil on the global markets. The European

:03:36. > :03:41.Central Bank will consider later today whether to start buying up

:03:41. > :03:44.the debt of Italy, the biggest economy to be hit by the crisis.

:03:44. > :03:49.The four survivors of a polar bear attack, in which a British teenager

:03:49. > :03:53.was killed, are expected to be flown back to the UK later today.

:03:53. > :03:56.They've all been treated in hospital in Northern Norway. Two
