:00:03. > :00:08.New evidence emerges of atrocities carried out by Colonel Gaddafi's

:00:08. > :00:15.forces. As fears grow for the fate of thousands of prisoners, human

:00:15. > :00:19.remains are found at a military base outside Tripoli.

:00:19. > :00:24.We cannot show you the kind of pictures that would convey the

:00:24. > :00:28.horror of what happened in here. It is very hard to even imagine the

:00:28. > :00:31.terror in the last few moments for the men who were trapped inside.

:00:31. > :00:34.Hurricane Irene claims more lives, as it sweeps up America's East

:00:34. > :00:43.Coast. There's widespread damage, but New York appears to have

:00:43. > :00:50.escaped the worst of its impact. Disaster for Usain Bolt at the

:00:50. > :00:54.World Athletics Championships, as he puts himself out of the medals.

:00:54. > :01:04.And, Manchester United put eight goals past Arsenal, to go top of

:01:04. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:19.In Libya, there's new evidence of atrocities carried out by Colonel

:01:20. > :01:22.Gaddafi's forces in their final days of power. Human Rights Watch

:01:22. > :01:25.says it has uncovered dozens of arbitrary executions, and just

:01:25. > :01:28.outside Tripoli, the BBC has filmed the aftermath of an apparent

:01:29. > :01:32.massacre in a military base with testimony from men who escaped,

:01:32. > :01:42.forced to leave relatives behind. I should warn you Orla Guerin's

:01:42. > :01:45.

:01:45. > :01:51.report contains some graphic and distressing images.

:01:51. > :01:56.In the shadow of the Eagle, dark secrets are coming to light. This

:01:56. > :02:03.was the headquarters of a much feared army unit run by Colonel

:02:03. > :02:11.Gaddafi's son. In a compounded just behind it, we found victims of

:02:11. > :02:19.execution, killed on Tuesday, in the dying days of the regime. This

:02:19. > :02:24.man's feet were still bound. But there was worse to come. Inside

:02:24. > :02:29.this smouldering Warehouse, the charred remains of dozens of bodies.

:02:29. > :02:34.We cannot show you the kind of pictures that would convey the

:02:34. > :02:38.horror of what happened in here. It is very hard to even imagine the

:02:38. > :02:48.terror in the last few moments for the men who were trapped inside.

:02:48. > :02:48.

:02:48. > :02:58.What we can say for certain is that they were shown absolutely no mercy.

:02:58. > :03:07.This man was one of them. He managed to flee the warehouse, but

:03:07. > :03:12.without his three sons. He says up to 150 civilians were packed in

:03:12. > :03:22.here, guarded by troops and mercenaries. They promised them

:03:22. > :03:27.water at sunset. But they came with guns instead. They started shooting

:03:27. > :03:37.like this, he said. Then, they threw in hand grenades, three of

:03:37. > :03:47.them. They stopped and came back and started again. The sight and

:03:47. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:57.smell were too much for some. For others, the grief was overwhelming.

:03:57. > :04:04.Husbands and fathers and sons had gone down here, men who never lived

:04:04. > :04:11.to see freely Libya. Our world affairs editor John

:04:11. > :04:16.Simpson is in Tripoli now. There are concerns of up to 50,000

:04:16. > :04:25.prisoners arrested during the regime who still cannot be found.

:04:25. > :04:28.What more can you tell us on that? Not a great deal I am afraid,

:04:29. > :04:33.because their fate is a complete mystery. I am sure a lot of them

:04:33. > :04:39.will have managed to have made their escape. But we know already,

:04:39. > :04:44.even before this terrible new evidence, that quite a few

:04:44. > :04:49.prisoners had been murdered, people had been herded into courtyards and

:04:49. > :04:55.so on, and mown down. What we do not know his whose orders these are

:04:55. > :05:01.on, a local initiative of a few soldiers, or whether it went right

:05:01. > :05:07.up to the very top, to Colonel Gaddafi himself and his son. So, we

:05:07. > :05:10.simply cannot tell at this stage. Hurricane Irene has caused

:05:10. > :05:15.widespread damage along America's East Coast, so far claiming at

:05:15. > :05:18.least 11 lives and causing billions of dollars of damage. More than two

:05:18. > :05:21.million people were ordered to leave their homes, and an estimated

:05:21. > :05:25.four million properties have been left without power. As Irene made

:05:25. > :05:28.her way up the East Coast from North Carolina to New Jersey, it

:05:28. > :05:32.was downgraded to a tropical storm. That's been fortunate for New York,

:05:32. > :05:42.where damage is not as bad as was feared. Our correspondent Steve

:05:42. > :05:44.

:05:44. > :05:48.Kingstone is in New York for us this evening.

:05:48. > :05:52.Right now here in New York, what we are feeling is the tail-end of this

:05:52. > :05:57.storm system. As you said, Hurricane Irene was officially

:05:57. > :06:02.downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, that means it has a

:06:02. > :06:08.lower wind speeds. But as we have seen today, she is still capable of

:06:08. > :06:12.inflicting serious damage. This morning, a giant waves

:06:12. > :06:20.buffeted the Atlantic coast as the artillery of destruction moved

:06:20. > :06:26.north. There goes the Life Guard shack. Here, rescuers helped an

:06:26. > :06:31.elderly resident from a home defenders against the tidal surge.

:06:31. > :06:36.The storm unloaded one ft of water, winds of 70 mph brought down power

:06:36. > :06:41.lines leaving millions without electricity. We're not out of the

:06:41. > :06:45.woods yet. Hurricane Irene remains a large and potentially dangerous

:06:45. > :06:50.storm, hazards still persist in committees that have already seen

:06:50. > :06:54.this storm pass. At the southern tip of Manhattan, torrential rain

:06:55. > :07:01.brought flooding. Its arrival has coincided with high tide which

:07:01. > :07:06.would normally stop about four feet below this harbour wall. But the

:07:06. > :07:11.waters have crept up with the storm surge, and are making their way

:07:11. > :07:16.into lower Manhattan. We have the skyscrapers of the financial

:07:16. > :07:20.district, Wall Street is a few blocks away. Before long, some

:07:20. > :07:24.streets were partially under water as trains felt the strain.

:07:24. > :07:30.Hurricane Irene has left her mark on Manhattan. It could have been

:07:30. > :07:34.worse. Gradually, New Yorkers emerged to take a look, some had

:07:34. > :07:40.ignored the order to abandon their homes. It is hard to tell my

:07:40. > :07:50.husband what to do. Mandatory evacuation, OK, let's make this a

:07:50. > :07:56.beautiful day. You ignored it? we went about our business.

:07:56. > :07:59.many others further south are counting the cost in dollars and in

:07:59. > :08:04.human life. When a falling tree crashed through this apartment

:08:04. > :08:09.block in Virginia, an 11-year-old boy inside stood no chance.

:08:09. > :08:15.Officially, Hurricane Irene is now with tropical storm, but she will

:08:15. > :08:18.live long in the memory. The eye of the storm has passed through New

:08:18. > :08:22.York and the mayor has said about an hour from now the evacuation

:08:22. > :08:28.order will be lifted. Hurricane will move through New England

:08:28. > :08:32.before breaking up over Canada this evening. It did not wreak the

:08:32. > :08:35.Armageddon scenarios some officials had feared but Hurricane Irene has

:08:35. > :08:41.left a trail of destruction that will cost billions of dollars to

:08:41. > :08:44.put right. The British Army is reported to have been cleared of

:08:44. > :08:48.systematically torturing civilians in the aftermath of the invasion of

:08:48. > :08:51.Iraq in 2003. The Sunday Telegraph says an inquiry into the death of a

:08:51. > :08:54.hotel worker, Baha Mousa, has found no evidence of widespread abuse and

:08:54. > :09:04.murder. But individual soldiers will be criticised. Jon Brain

:09:04. > :09:04.

:09:04. > :09:08.reports. Baha Mousa was in a cut seat of the

:09:08. > :09:12.British Army for less than 48 hours. In that time, the hotel

:09:12. > :09:19.receptionist suffered 90 separate injuries before dying of

:09:19. > :09:25.asphyxiation. He was one of a number of Iraqis seen in this video

:09:25. > :09:28.being verbally abused while hooded and inbound, stressed positions.

:09:28. > :09:32.According to the Sunday Telegraph, the three-year inquiry into the

:09:32. > :09:37.death will clear the Army of systematic torture and abuse.

:09:37. > :09:41.Instead, it says it will criticise the conduct of individual soldiers

:09:41. > :09:47.and highlight numerous failures in the army's chain of command.

:09:47. > :09:50.Critics say, if true, it is a huge disappointment. The issues that

:09:50. > :09:54.there is an abuse of human rights committed by the Army within the

:09:55. > :09:59.knowledge of the Army, within the system, this cannot continue.

:09:59. > :10:03.Supporters of the Army claimed the vast majority of British troops in

:10:03. > :10:07.Iraq conducted themselves with professionalism and decency. This

:10:07. > :10:11.is a leaked report, it is not official. The Army has taken

:10:11. > :10:17.extensive action to try to mitigate against such a thing ever happening

:10:17. > :10:22.again. You cannot stop it entirely. The Ministry of Defence will not

:10:22. > :10:25.comment until the report is published but it does describe the

:10:25. > :10:30.treatment of Baha Mousa as a shameful and inexcusable. Officials

:10:30. > :10:40.insist lessons have been learned and they say the inquiry's

:10:40. > :10:41.

:10:41. > :10:45.recommendations will be studied carefully.

:10:45. > :10:48.It's been confirmed that a total of 24 so-called "free schools", set up

:10:48. > :10:51.by parents, faith groups and others, will open in England for the start

:10:51. > :10:54.of the new school year. The government says the state-funded

:10:54. > :10:56.schools, which are outside local authority control, will drive up

:10:56. > :11:01.standards. Critics, including teachers' unions, fear they will

:11:01. > :11:05.take pupils and resources away from other schools.

:11:05. > :11:11.It has been a middle school and college, but now it will be a free

:11:11. > :11:15.school. 49 children will be here. Not only will it be Bradford's

:11:15. > :11:21.latest primary but, like all free schools, it will be independent of

:11:21. > :11:27.local authority control. When the centre of inner-city Bradford, for

:11:27. > :11:31.the past 25 years, the state education system has failed us, we

:11:31. > :11:38.will definitely reform that and bring about positive change for the

:11:38. > :11:42.children of this area. This primary won't be alone, there will be a

:11:42. > :11:46.second free school, both in inner- city Bradford. What is happening in

:11:46. > :11:50.Bradford is exactly what the government wants, parents and

:11:50. > :11:57.communities taking charge of their children's education in some of the

:11:57. > :12:00.most deprived areas, to raise standards. Not every community is

:12:00. > :12:05.getting a free school. There are only five in the north of England,

:12:05. > :12:10.a handful in the Midlands. Half of the 24 free schools will be in the

:12:10. > :12:15.south. The largest number in London. Some believe they are divisive and

:12:15. > :12:20.a necessary. As any child start a new school, one would want them to

:12:20. > :12:24.have the best opportunities they can. It is our view those are

:12:24. > :12:29.provided by the existing state comprehensive schools and we can

:12:29. > :12:33.see that from the fat results have improved in these schools at GCSE

:12:33. > :12:37.and A-level year on year. In a few weeks, free schools will open their

:12:38. > :12:43.doors to children, the change is a worry to some. The government

:12:43. > :12:47.believes it is time to trust parents to get it right. Here's

:12:47. > :12:50.Francis Collings with today's sport. What a day for both Manchester

:12:50. > :12:54.football teams. And a collective hammering for north London.

:12:54. > :12:57.Manchester City put five goals past Spurs today, with four for Edin

:12:57. > :13:01.Jecko. And Manchester United routed Arsenal at Old Trafford scoring

:13:01. > :13:09.eight goals in the process, to go top of the Premier League. Patrick

:13:09. > :13:13.Gearey reports. Arsenal's win over Manchester

:13:13. > :13:18.United on 1st May was the last time they won a league game. Mayday has

:13:18. > :13:21.been in in their fans is busily. Arsene Wenger has backed himself up

:13:21. > :13:25.against any sense of crisis but they are defending tells a

:13:25. > :13:35.different story, well Barack Obama with a soft goal. The tale of woe

:13:35. > :13:36.

:13:36. > :13:43.went on even when they had this penalty. It ended up going wrong.

:13:43. > :13:51.Ashley Young, his first United goal at Old Trafford was iconic. A team

:13:51. > :13:57.having fun. Wayne Rooney joined in with a goal. Wayne Rooney like his

:13:57. > :14:04.gold so much he went for another one. Nani and Ji-Sung Park added

:14:04. > :14:07.further humiliation. Wayne Rooney completed his hat-trick. Then a

:14:07. > :14:10.wonderful second for Ashley Young ensured this is one of the worst

:14:10. > :14:17.days in Arsenal's recent history. United go top.

:14:17. > :14:21.They have moved above Manchester City who went goal crazy. Dzeko was

:14:21. > :14:31.at the centre with a combination of sumptuous football and superior

:14:31. > :14:31.

:14:31. > :14:41.finishing, to have been zeroed by half-time. A landmark match for

:14:41. > :14:42.

:14:42. > :14:45.City. 5-12 Manchester City. -- 5-2. To the World Athletics

:14:45. > :14:48.Championships, where there was a major shock in South Korea.

:14:48. > :14:51.The world's fastest man over 100 metres, Usain Bolt of Jamaica,

:14:51. > :14:54.failed to win. Not because he was beaten, but because he false-

:14:54. > :15:01.started. And that gave his compatriot Yohan Blake to chance to

:15:01. > :15:05.take the gold. Our sports editor David Bond reports from Daegu.

:15:05. > :15:10.A long-distance view of the shortest but most eagerly

:15:10. > :15:15.anticipated race in the world. A lot of these fans might be new to

:15:15. > :15:21.athletics. Even they knew Usain Bolt was a sure thing for the 100

:15:21. > :15:28.metres. COMMENTATOR: Usain Bolt. Usain Bolt seemed to things as well,

:15:28. > :15:33.dismissing his rival's chances on the start-line. Then, this happened.

:15:33. > :15:38.COMMENTATOR: Of a false start, Usain Bolt. His bid to retain his

:15:38. > :15:46.world title was over before it had begun. For the fastest man on the

:15:46. > :15:51.planet, the shock of being brought down to Earth was almost too much.

:15:51. > :15:55.His misfortune allowed his training partner Yohan Blake to become the

:15:55. > :16:01.youngest world 100 metres champion in history. But the circumstances

:16:01. > :16:04.of his victory will open a fierce debate about the sport's new one

:16:05. > :16:09.false start rule. He even if you are a champion, there is no

:16:09. > :16:14.favouritism. As much as we would all have loved to see bart macro

:16:14. > :16:18.run 9.6 or break the world record again, there are certain rules set

:16:18. > :16:23.inside that barometer. Once again, it is Usain Bolt who has grabbed
