:07:23. > :07:30.has been speaking to the BBC in his first broadcast interview since

:07:34. > :07:38.in charge of the Treasury throughout the financial crisis.
:07:38. > :07:44.For the cameras, he and Gordon Brown were close, but with scores
:07:44. > :07:52.to settle and a book to sell, Alistair Darling has denounced the
:07:52. > :07:56.former prime minister and a regime he describes as brutal. He said on
:07:56. > :08:00.occasion Gordon Brown's behaviour was appalling. I don't mind him
:08:00. > :08:04.attacking the Tories, but what is so debilitating is when Euro lot
:08:04. > :08:08.are doing it to you. Mr Darling said his relationship with Gordon
:08:08. > :08:12.Brown was strained beyond breaking point, and he wanted to be more
:08:12. > :08:16.candid about the need for cuts than Gordon Brown was apparently willing
:08:16. > :08:21.to be. At the time, reports of feuds and fight in the government
:08:21. > :08:25.were dismissed as tittle-tattle by Number 10. In fact, Alistair
:08:25. > :08:29.Darling is the latest witness to describe the poisonous atmosphere
:08:29. > :08:34.and serious disagreements about how to handle the financial crisis. For
:08:34. > :08:39.Labour, this is painful history, but Alistair Darling has advice for
:08:39. > :08:44.the present government as well. The Bank of England and its current
:08:44. > :08:47.governor come in for some criticism. Darling says the bank was slow to
:08:47. > :08:50.recognise the scale of the crisis and believes it is badly structured.
:08:50. > :08:55.The present government wants to make the Bank of England
:08:55. > :09:00.responsible for interest rates, and also for the supervision of banks,
:09:00. > :09:04.and also it has this overall responsibility for ironing out the
:09:04. > :09:09.peaks and troughs of the economic cycle. That is a lot to invest in
:09:09. > :09:13.one person. Speaking earlier today, Gordon Brown said he was not going
:09:13. > :09:18.to get into politics, but the memoirs describe the time the
:09:18. > :09:20.Conservatives will try to focus on and Labour's new leadership will
:09:20. > :09:24.want to forget. The former head of the

:09:27. > :09:34.France for the first time since the collapse of the sexual assault case
:09:34. > :09:39.which cost him his job. He was accompanied by his wife. This
:09:39. > :09:44.report contains flash photography. When he left France for months ago,
:09:44. > :09:47.Dominique Strauss-Kahn was basking in the warmth of public support, a
:09:47. > :09:51.big favourite for next year's presidential election. Today he
:09:51. > :09:58.returned a very different figure in the eyes of the French public. The
:09:58. > :10:07.charges dropped, but his political career in shreds. Among supporters,
:10:07. > :10:12.there is still hope that one day he can return to frontline politics.
:10:12. > :10:19.He is a very competent man. He has great international experience. He
:10:19. > :10:26.was a very good minister, and you know the talented people in
:10:26. > :10:30.politics are not so numerous. it was not a hero's welcome. For
:10:30. > :10:34.many, this lasting image of the elder statesman handcuffed,
:10:34. > :10:38.dishevelled and disgraced, has brought inexcusable shame on the
:10:38. > :10:43.French nation. Politicians are forever reinventing themselves but
:10:43. > :10:48.so much has been written and alleged in recent months that a
:10:48. > :10:52.quick political comeback seems unlikely. Four out of five French
:10:52. > :10:56.people recently said they would not want him as their president, 61%

:11:09. > :11:14.have won his freedom but in New York he lost his dignity, and in
:11:14. > :11:18.French politics it is not so easily recovered.
:11:18. > :11:23.With news from the last day of the world athletics and the rest of the
:11:23. > :11:26.sport, over to Sean Fletcher. The world championships ended on a high
:11:26. > :11:34.for the British team with Mo Farah winning the gold in the 5000 metres,
:11:34. > :11:38.the first time a British athlete has won a World event. It helped
:11:38. > :11:44.Great Britain to 6th place in the overall medals table.
:11:44. > :11:48.Mo Farah, Somalia and born, but tonight Britain's first ever world
:11:48. > :11:52.champion in an event which has over the years become a victory
:11:52. > :11:58.procession for Africans. A week on from his heartbreaking defeat in
:11:58. > :12:02.the 10,000 metres, he celebrated with his family redemption over
:12:02. > :12:08.half the distance. No doubt the medal will have felt double the
:12:08. > :12:12.value. Like last Sunday, Mo Farah kicked for home with one lap to go.
:12:12. > :12:17.He said his coach had told him to relax and run like a sprinter. This
:12:17. > :12:23.time there was to be no ambush on the line. His speed was too much
:12:23. > :12:28.for the opposition. It feels Lawson to have that gold medal. I came so
:12:28. > :12:33.close before. I can't quite believe it. A defending world triple jump
:12:33. > :12:38.champion Phillips Idowu looked like adding a second gold for Britain.
:12:38. > :12:44.Despite producing his best jump of the year he had to settle behind
:12:44. > :12:48.Christian Taylor. I will take the silver medal. It was a tough
:12:48. > :12:53.competition and my competitor only needed one jump to win. Sometimes
:12:53. > :12:57.that is just the way it goes. the end of these world
:12:57. > :13:04.championships, Britain had finished 6th in the world medal table with
:13:04. > :13:09.two golds, four silvers and one bronze. In fact it is one gold more
:13:09. > :13:12.than the head coach predicted. is an awesome performance for
:13:12. > :13:17.British athletics. Not many times we have done better in the history
:13:17. > :13:22.of British athletics so I am very pleased. Exceeded expectations?
:13:22. > :13:27.never do expectations. We hit the target and that is more important
:13:27. > :13:32.to me. The targets are set to get a platform for the London Games and
:13:32. > :13:36.every time we hit it we are coming closer to success in London.
:13:36. > :13:43.have all become accustomed to world records involving Usain Bolt, but
:13:43. > :13:49.he kept us waiting until the very last race in Daegu, leading home
:13:49. > :13:57.his Jamaican quartet in the relay it of the time of 37.04 seconds.
:13:57. > :14:04.But even that could not overshadow another in -- impressive night for
:14:04. > :14:08.Great Britain. Thanks to Mo Farah and Phillips Idowu, Great Britain
:14:08. > :14:17.has exceeded its metal targets. The question now is whether they can do
:14:17. > :14:21.even better in London next year. As England's footballers prepare to
:14:21. > :14:25.take on Wales, Fabio Capello has received the news that Jack
:14:25. > :14:29.Wilshere will miss the rest of the Euro-campaign because of his ankle
:14:30. > :14:35.injury. The midfielder is now expected to be out of action for
:14:35. > :14:40.another two months. It is a blow for his club Arsenal, after Cesc
:14:40. > :14:43.Fabregas and Samir Nasri left. There was further success for
:14:43. > :14:47.Britain's rowers on the final day of their World Championships in
:14:47. > :14:56.Slovenia. It included gold for men's lightweight double and
:14:56. > :15:01.coxless four. A golden day for British rowing,
:15:01. > :15:05.but especially for Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter. After a season
:15:05. > :15:11.blighted by illness, it was nip and tuck they would even compete here,
:15:11. > :15:15.but they edged out New Zealand for the grittiest of golds and you
:15:15. > :15:20.could see what it meant. This season has been the worst we have
:15:20. > :15:23.ever had. We have had problems, issues, but we showed we are unique
:15:23. > :15:28.combination in the way we pay attention to detail and work on
:15:28. > :15:36.things, and make the most out of everything we do together. Britain
:15:36. > :15:39.finished top of the medals table here, Britain's four also storming
:15:39. > :15:45.to the top of the table. The expectations for the Olympics could
:15:45. > :15:51.not be higher. We have got to keep working hard, but it is the best
:15:51. > :15:55.position we could be in at the moment. With a total of seven gold
