:00:35. > :00:41.10 years on, America and the world remember the 9/11 attacks.

:00:41. > :00:46.# And the land of the freak. At a ceremony here at Ground Zero,

:00:46. > :00:50.the families of those who died remember their loved ones.

:00:50. > :00:55.The 67 British victims are remembered as a wreath is laid by

:00:55. > :01:01.the US embassy. Remember me when I have gone away.

:01:01. > :01:06.Gone far our way into the silent land. Remember me when no more,

:01:06. > :01:10.day-by-day, you tell me of a future that you planned. Also on the

:01:10. > :01:13.programme: A British man is killed and his

:01:13. > :01:16.wife kidnapped from a beach resort in northern Kenya.

:01:16. > :01:22.24 men being held in slavery on a site in Bedfordshire are found and

:01:22. > :01:32.freed by police. And Wales push South Africa all the

:01:54. > :02:00.York where ceremonies have been held to remember the nearly 3,000

:02:00. > :02:05.people who died on September 11th, 2001 on this, the 10th anniversary

:02:05. > :02:09.of the attacks. Behind me at the area now known as Ground Zero,

:02:09. > :02:19.relatives of those who died gathered for a ceremony to remember

:02:19. > :02:28.

:02:28. > :02:35.loved ones and on a those who risk their lives to save them.

:02:35. > :02:39.Basing of the home of the brave as firefighters and police proudly

:02:39. > :02:45.Burke they taunt Stars and Stripes that flew here on that fateful day.

:02:45. > :02:47.The President then and the President now stand before the

:02:47. > :02:57.memorials were the towers once stood, engraved around the edge the

:02:57. > :03:10.

:03:10. > :03:20.names of the dead, each one was Flight 11 hit the first hour at

:03:20. > :03:22.

:03:22. > :03:26.8:46am, and exactly the same time, a moment of silence.

:03:26. > :03:32.At nine a 3am, the second how was hit and another pause for

:03:32. > :03:36.reflection. That they changed his presidency

:03:36. > :03:41.and George Bush changed the world, declaring global war on terror in

:03:41. > :03:46.reaction to Al-Qaeda's attack. More than 6,000 American soldiers have

:03:46. > :03:50.died in Afghanistan and Iraq. Today he read a letter from Abraham

:03:50. > :03:54.Lincoln to a mother who lost five sons in battle.

:03:54. > :04:00.I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your

:04:00. > :04:04.bereavement and leave you only be cherished memory of the loved and

:04:04. > :04:10.lost and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a

:04:10. > :04:14.sacrifice, upon the altar of freedom.

:04:14. > :04:18.President Obama inherited the wars and ordered the mission that killed

:04:18. > :04:24.Osama Bin Laden this year and shows a Bible reading which reflects his

:04:24. > :04:33.desire to end the conflict. Come behold, the words of the Lord.

:04:33. > :04:37.He makes wars cease to the end of the Earth. He breaks the battle and

:04:37. > :04:42.cuts the Spear in two, he burns the chariot.

:04:42. > :04:45.The President won't deliver his remarks reflecting on a decade just

:04:45. > :04:51.gone until this evening but has said America has emerged longer

:04:51. > :04:56.after 9/11 and that the 10 years of wars, it is time to build the

:04:56. > :04:59.nation at home. The President moved on to a service at the field in

:04:59. > :05:08.Pennsylvania where flight 93 crashed. In Washington, another

:05:08. > :05:13.ceremony to mark the deaths at the Pentagon. The huge political

:05:13. > :05:18.consequences of that day are not to the fore, it is a day when America

:05:18. > :05:21.came together to reflect on its sorrowful stop the ceremonies

:05:21. > :05:26.seemed designed to tug at the heartstrings, filled fall of the

:05:26. > :05:32.personal and the poignant. And my father, who I never met because I

:05:32. > :05:36.was in my mum's belly. I love you father. I love you for loving the

:05:36. > :05:46.idea of having me. You gave me the gift of life and I wish you could

:05:46. > :05:51.

:05:52. > :06:01.be here to enjoy it it with me. # People talking without speaking.

:06:02. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:08.And my husband, Michael. We love you and we miss you.

:06:08. > :06:18.This anniversary of a nightmare is nearly at an end, it echo will

:06:18. > :06:25.

:06:25. > :06:30.President Obama said the terrible events of 10 years ago have brought

:06:30. > :06:34.America together. For many people across the world, 9/11 unfolded in

:06:34. > :06:38.front of our very eyes, the images were painful and shocking and

:06:38. > :06:44.despite the passing of time, they remain powerful. We look back on

:06:44. > :06:54.the day America was under attack. His report shows the moments when

:06:54. > :06:54.

:06:54. > :07:00.the planes hit the Twin Towers and when they later collapsed.

:07:00. > :07:05.Holy (swearing). The attacks on America had started.

:07:05. > :07:11.It is a 40 6:00am, firemen on a training exercise witness the

:07:11. > :07:21.moment American Airlines flight American was flown into the tower

:07:21. > :07:23.

:07:23. > :07:28.of the World Trade Center. Just 17 minutes later, this happens. His

:07:28. > :07:38.second serve -- Boeing 767 of United Airlines strikes the south

:07:38. > :07:40.

:07:40. > :07:46.tower. Both aeroplanes were heavily laden with fuel for 2,500 mile

:07:46. > :07:53.flights to Los Angeles. It has got to be a terrorist attack, I cannot

:07:53. > :07:58.tell you anything more. I saw the aeroplane hit the building. What is

:07:58. > :08:06.happening? Already, hundreds of people are there, hundreds more

:08:06. > :08:13.have no chance of escape. -- dead. In desperation, many jumped,

:08:13. > :08:18.leaping to their deaths. At Booker Elementary School in Florida, the

:08:18. > :08:23.White House chief of staff or tells President Bush, a second plane hit

:08:23. > :08:26.the second hour, America is under attack. For another five minutes

:08:26. > :08:31.the President's days into the classroom listening to children

:08:31. > :08:35.reading aloud. But the attacks are not over and at

:08:35. > :08:40.9:37am, a third plane crashes into the Pentagon just outside

:08:40. > :08:45.Washington. All the passengers and crew and 125 civilian and military

:08:45. > :08:51.personnel are killed. The building is the nerve centre of the US armed

:08:51. > :08:56.forces. You can see the two Towers. A huge explosion raining degree on

:08:56. > :09:02.all others, we have to get out of the way. In New York, and less than

:09:02. > :09:08.an hour after it was hit, the entire 110 stories of the South

:09:08. > :09:18.Tower implode and collapse. No one left inside survives, clouds of

:09:18. > :09:18.

:09:18. > :09:24.toxic dust and debris sweep across southern Manhattan. Minutes later,

:09:24. > :09:28.the last of the hijacked planes crashes at Pennsylvania. During the

:09:28. > :09:33.flight, passengers and crew phoned loved ones and are told of the

:09:33. > :09:42.attacks in New York. Knowing their fate, the passengers fight back. No

:09:42. > :09:48.one on the ground is killed, many lives are saved. But the death toll

:09:48. > :09:54.keeps rising. At 10:28am, the north tower, first to be hit also goes

:09:54. > :10:01.down. In less than two hours, the destruction of the World Trade

:10:02. > :10:07.Center is complete. America and the world look completely changed.

:10:07. > :10:11.67 Britons died in those attacks 10 years ago. In London, Prince

:10:11. > :10:21.Charles and David Cameron attended a Service at the September 11th

:10:21. > :10:22.

:10:22. > :10:26.memorial garden in Grosvenor Square. From memorial gardens in the heart

:10:26. > :10:31.of the city which has also known what it is to be attacked, an act

:10:31. > :10:35.of solidarity and remembrance. Families of the 67 Britons who died

:10:35. > :10:38.in the attacks had come to Grosvenor Square by the American

:10:38. > :10:44.embassy, where they were joined by the Prince of Wales and the Prime

:10:44. > :10:48.Minister to remember. Remember me when I am gone away.

:10:48. > :10:53.Gone far our way into the silent land.

:10:53. > :10:58.When you can no more hold me by the hand.

:10:58. > :11:03.Nor I, half turned to go, yet turning, stay.

:11:03. > :11:10.The Prince of Wales recall the impact of a most terrible day.

:11:10. > :11:16.None of us will ever forget where we were all what we were doing when

:11:16. > :11:21.on that otherwise, ordinary day and out of a clear blue sky, came so

:11:21. > :11:26.much premeditated death and destruction. He spoke of the anger

:11:26. > :11:31.and bewilderment caused by senseless deaths and of the love

:11:31. > :11:36.that had been the overwhelming response to the bereaved. On this

:11:36. > :11:41.anniversary we are drawn to, in our thoughts and prayers, knowing we

:11:42. > :11:48.cannot change the past but that through struggling to find a light

:11:48. > :11:56.that can lighten our darkness, we may ultimately bring the healing

:11:57. > :12:02.the world so desperately needs. In one corner of Grosvenor Square,

:12:02. > :12:07.about 100 members of a radical Islamic group had mounted a protest.

:12:08. > :12:17.An American flag was burned. But this was not a day for loud

:12:17. > :12:22.voices. Our beloved son, Vincent Wells, and our dear friend Simon

:12:22. > :12:25.James Turner. Within the tranquillity of the September 11th

:12:25. > :12:35.memorial garden, the names were read of the Britons who perished in

:12:35. > :12:37.

:12:37. > :12:42.the attacks. Our son and Vicki's husband, Stephen Lawn.

:12:42. > :12:52.Those who died had been people of all faiths, and on this anniversary

:12:52. > :12:53.

:12:53. > :12:58.they were honoured and remembered. At the end of your report, you said

:12:58. > :13:03.the effects of 9/11 world echoed through the decades. 10 years on,

:13:03. > :13:07.Americans haven't come under attack on US all, does that mean the

:13:07. > :13:11.policies have worked and Americans can feel safe? I don't think they

:13:11. > :13:16.can ever feel completely safe. It does seem as though those policies

:13:16. > :13:20.have worked. I think America is safer, but a heavy price has been

:13:20. > :13:25.paid and not just by Americans. I have never seen the security we

:13:25. > :13:29.have seen today, but every day at airports and stations you see an

:13:29. > :13:34.increase in security that is a burden for Americans. Let us not

:13:34. > :13:39.forget, 80 American soldiers were injured today in a bomb in

:13:39. > :13:42.Afghanistan, three Afghan civilians were killed. That conflict goes on

:13:42. > :13:46.and the President wants to end it and I think many Americans want to

:13:46. > :13:51.end it. But there will be a debate about whether that and Iraq has

:13:51. > :13:56.made America safer or made it more of a target. Or perhaps both.

:13:56. > :14:00.In New York it has been a day of remembrance, a day of reflection

:14:01. > :14:05.and for many New Yorkers, a day of resilience. The memorial garden

:14:05. > :14:11.behind me opens to the public tomorrow. From Ground Zero, back to

:14:11. > :14:15.the studio. A British man has been killed and

:14:15. > :14:18.his wife kidnapped at a remote beach resort in northern Kenya.

:14:18. > :14:24.Police say they are treating it as banditry but don't know where the

:14:24. > :14:32.gunmen came from. The couple were the only guests at an exclusive

:14:32. > :14:37.report in Lamu, near Kiwayu. We understand from the Kenyan

:14:37. > :14:41.police the couple had spends a week on safari in the Masai Mara, they

:14:41. > :14:47.then have many tourists do, headed to the coast to relax. They chose a

:14:47. > :14:55.place a renowned for its privacy and its calm.

:14:55. > :15:00.it all, pristine beaches, turquoise waters and plenty of luxury. The

:15:00. > :15:05.website says the only rule here is to relax. But for one British

:15:05. > :15:11.couple, the holiday of a lifetime turned into a nightmare. This is

:15:11. > :15:15.what we know so far, the couple arrived at the exclusive seaside

:15:15. > :15:20.resort at 4:00pm local time yesterday afternoon. They were the

:15:20. > :15:23.only holidaymakers there. Police say gunmen entered the resort half-

:15:23. > :15:28.an-hour after midnight. It is believed the husband is killed soon

:15:28. > :15:35.after. The attackers kidnapped his wife, escaping in a speedboat. So

:15:35. > :15:43.far, it sounds as though the Kenyan police are short on clues. We are

:15:43. > :15:49.treating it as a bandit attack. But since we weren't informed about

:15:49. > :15:53.them, maybe sooner or later they may contact us. We are not very

:15:53. > :15:58.sure. Today, the body of the murdered tourist was brought to

:15:58. > :16:01.this Nairobi funeral parlour in order to be flown home. Now the

:16:01. > :16:11.British and Kenyan authorities are focusing their efforts on trying to

:16:11. > :16:13.

:16:13. > :16:18.The Chancellor has signalled major changes to come to the banking

:16:18. > :16:25.system it in Britain. Robert Peston is here. What will change?

:16:25. > :16:28.I think a great deal. I have been following deliberations -- the

:16:28. > :16:35.deliberations of for some months and it is likely that they will

:16:35. > :16:41.propose the biggest reform of the biggest -- British banking system

:16:41. > :16:45.in a generation. They want to put in a ring-fenced to protect basic

:16:45. > :16:49.banking activities like savings and small businesses and putting a

:16:49. > :16:55.protection around so-called retail banking. The big question is how

:16:55. > :16:59.high will be there all and precisely what will beat inside the

:16:59. > :17:04.retail banking operations. My view is that the wall will be high and

:17:04. > :17:08.what we regard as every think that is essential to the economy will be

:17:08. > :17:13.within the protected retail banks. What does that mean if I am right?

:17:13. > :17:18.The big banks and in particular, Barclay's and the Royal Bank of

:17:18. > :17:23.Scotland, will hate it and as we have already seen George Osborne

:17:23. > :17:29.signalling that he will back the proposals the commission -- of the

:17:29. > :17:38.commission, he will be at loggerheads with much of the city.

:17:38. > :17:44.Colonel Gaddafi's so and has arrived in idea. Earlier, the

:17:44. > :17:49.authorities in Libya have said they found the bodies of 20 fighters in

:17:49. > :17:54.roadside graves which up mainly those of African mercenaries

:17:54. > :17:59.fighting for Gaddafi. You may find some of these images distressing.

:18:00. > :18:05.It is a gruesome task. Bodies are being found in different sites

:18:05. > :18:10.across Tripoli. They must be identified and buried properly.

:18:10. > :18:15.Some were crimes of the old regime. Others died in the fight for

:18:15. > :18:22.Tripoli. One of the men was a soldier. Three more were civilians

:18:22. > :18:27.killed three weeks ago. Despite the death and destruction, it is not

:18:27. > :18:31.the rebel flag advised -- flies in one poor neighbourhood of the

:18:31. > :18:35.capital where some still support Gaddafi. People here say they are

:18:35. > :18:40.angry at what the rebels have done, afraid of the vacuum left behind

:18:40. > :18:46.and what the future holds and they remain to be convinced by Libya's

:18:46. > :18:52.new leaders. I'm scared for my future, my kids, my job. I have

:18:53. > :19:00.lost my job. All these challenges fall on the shoulders of the new

:19:00. > :19:06.administration. The Prime Minister, effectively, must now help shape

:19:06. > :19:13.the new government. It is difficult to exaggerate the queue - might

:19:13. > :19:18.huge task facing the de facto leader. Although there are vast

:19:18. > :19:22.reserves of good will in Libya, they are not bound us. He is yet to

:19:22. > :19:27.even address the Libyan people who now crave peace, stability and

:19:27. > :19:32.prosperity. It is an enormous challenge for any country,

:19:32. > :19:38.especially one still at all. A BBC team was caught up in fighting just

:19:38. > :19:42.inside Bani Walid today. It is a small, dusty town in the hands of

:19:42. > :19:46.Gaddafi loyalists and it is a reminder that it is the bullet and

:19:46. > :19:53.not the ballot box that still settles the differences here.

:19:53. > :19:56.24 men believed to be victims of slavery have been rescued from a

:19:56. > :19:59.travellers' site in Leighton Buzzard. They say many of the

:19:59. > :20:04.victims were malnourished and living in filthy conditions. It is

:20:04. > :20:08.thought that some were kept against their will for up to 15 years.

:20:08. > :20:13.After weeks of intelligence gathering, police soon found what

:20:13. > :20:18.they were looking for - men who they say were being kept as slaves

:20:18. > :20:24.here for years. 24 were discovered at a number of locations, some so

:20:24. > :20:31.weak they had to be carefully led away. Officers who raided the Queen

:20:31. > :20:34.NATO Caravan Park say they were shocked by what they'd discovered.

:20:34. > :20:39.The is people were institutionalised. One person has

:20:39. > :20:43.been here for 15 years service is normal life for him. Bedford show

:20:43. > :20:48.police alleged they were recruited by a gang masters who forced them

:20:48. > :20:53.to live in squalid conditions and work for no pay. Most are English,

:20:53. > :20:59.with a few eastern Europeans but detectives say they were all
