:00:08. > :00:12.Tonight at 10pm: The main political parties in Greece agree to form a

:00:12. > :00:16.government of national unity. After talks this evening the Prime

:00:16. > :00:19.Minister George Papandreou says he intends to stand down. Police begin

:00:19. > :00:24.a criminal investigation into the M5 crash. Witnesses claim thick

:00:24. > :00:27.smoke drifted across the motorway from a firework display. The

:00:27. > :00:33.shocked family of Christopher Alder are told that after his death in

:00:33. > :00:43.custody 13 years ago, they buried the wrong body. And a warning that

:00:43. > :00:57.

:00:57. > :01:00.the Olympics might see tourists Good evening. The main political

:01:00. > :01:03.parties in Greece say they have agreed in principle on the

:01:03. > :01:06.formation of a coalition government. The current Prime Minister, George

:01:06. > :01:11.Papandreou, will not lead the new administration and the parties will

:01:11. > :01:13.meet again tomorrow to agree the details of the plan. The deal is

:01:13. > :01:22.aimed at ending the country's political crisis and stopping the

:01:22. > :01:28.Government going bankrupt. Mark Lowen is in Athens for us tonight.

:01:28. > :01:33.He has been Prime Minister here since 2009, during one of the most

:01:33. > :01:38.severe crisis this country has ever faced. Tonight we know that George

:01:38. > :01:46.Papandreou it is bowing out. It has been another day of intense

:01:46. > :01:50.activity, negotiating his exit. The coalition government will confront

:01:50. > :01:54.Greece a's financial crisis. Prime Minister and leader of the

:01:54. > :01:57.opposition are brought together by the Greek president to decide on a

:01:57. > :02:03.new national unity government. No one was certain an agreement would

:02:03. > :02:08.be reached. Both sides have played a high-stakes game of political

:02:08. > :02:13.brinkmanship in recent days. This could be the last chance to find

:02:13. > :02:17.consensus. As talks continued, Greeks watched and waited. This

:02:17. > :02:22.country has been in the grip of uncertainty for days - political

:02:22. > :02:30.wrangling to add to its financial woes. In the bars and cafes of

:02:30. > :02:40.Athens, they wanted a leader to Stig Greece to, waters. We need

:02:40. > :02:43.

:02:43. > :02:49.hope. We need something new. -- calmer waters. He is not a good

:02:49. > :02:56.Prime Minister. That is why. He does not care about our lives. He

:02:56. > :03:01.knows about his profit - only about profit. A frantic rush of activity

:03:01. > :03:05.outside the President's office. The closing statement was clear. The

:03:06. > :03:11.premiership of George Papandreou had come to an end. The Prime

:03:12. > :03:16.Minister had finally agreed to step aside ahead -- in favour of a

:03:16. > :03:20.coalition. More talks tomorrow about who will be appointed Prime

:03:20. > :03:23.Minister. The leadership will have to ratify the bail out package so

:03:23. > :03:28.that Greece can receive the next instalment of its loan and hope to

:03:28. > :03:32.stave off bankruptcy. George Papandreou will leave an immense

:03:32. > :03:38.task to his predecessor. The debt crisis in this country threatens

:03:38. > :03:42.the rest of the eurozone. The population is angry and exhausted.

:03:42. > :03:49.At least a realisation that a step forwards out of this political

:03:49. > :03:55.crisis has now been taken - a small sign of progress on a perilous road

:03:55. > :03:59.ahead. Who could takeover? Evangelos Venizelos could takeover.

:03:59. > :04:05.The former governor of the Bank of Greece is another option. Whoever

:04:05. > :04:11.it is, they will face an unenviable task. The future of the eurozone

:04:11. > :04:18.will depend upon us. Our Europe editor, Gavin Hewitt, is with me

:04:18. > :04:23.now. How do you assess tonight's developments? The most important

:04:23. > :04:28.thing is Greece will not now the fault. There will be no short-term

:04:28. > :04:32.exit from the euro. It was going to run out of money in mid-December.

:04:32. > :04:38.That will not happen. The Greek parliament will approve the latest

:04:38. > :04:43.EU bail out deal, worth 130 billion euros. It is important and it has

:04:43. > :04:47.bought time. We do not know who will be the new leader. We do not

:04:47. > :04:53.know how long the interim government will be in place. It is

:04:53. > :04:57.an important breathing space for Greece. There will be some

:04:57. > :05:03.stability over the next few weeks and months. It has brought

:05:03. > :05:07.breathing space. Is it a long-term solution? I do not think it is. The

:05:07. > :05:12.economy is still shrinking. Unemployment is going up. It is

:05:12. > :05:21.difficult to see where growth is coming from. Banks would take a

:05:21. > :05:27.write-down of 50% and reduced debt. If you look ahead to 2010 -- 2020,

:05:27. > :05:32.the debt to GDP ratio is still 110%. What we have seen today is an

:05:32. > :05:36.important step forward. The longer term, fundamental problems of

:05:36. > :05:39.Greece still have not been resolved. Police have begun a criminal

:05:39. > :05:42.investigation into the crash on the M5 in Somerset on Friday which

:05:42. > :05:45.killed seven people. They now think the pile-up was caused by smoke -

:05:45. > :05:48.and not fog - drifting across the motorway. Investigators are

:05:48. > :05:58.focusing attention on a firework display which was taking place at a

:05:58. > :06:01.

:06:01. > :06:05.nearby rugby club. Through the ash and the debris, they sifted all day.

:06:05. > :06:12.They were searching for the victims' personal possessions and

:06:12. > :06:18.for clues about what happened here. But now that all the vehicles have

:06:18. > :06:23.been taken from the scorched carriageway, the focus of this

:06:23. > :06:27.investigation has moved to an area a few hundred metres from the crash

:06:27. > :06:33.site - Taunton Rugby Club - where there was a direct splayed on

:06:33. > :06:39.Friday night. At about the same time, 34 vehicles collided on the

:06:39. > :06:45.motorway. Many of them burst into flames. Was poor visibility to

:06:45. > :06:49.blame? There was very significant smoke across the carriageway. It

:06:49. > :06:54.caused a bank - similar to a fog bank - that was very distracting

:06:54. > :06:58.and difficult to drive through. Police say the rugby club is the

:06:58. > :07:04.main focus of their investigation. The field when the firework display

:07:04. > :07:10.took place has been sealed off. From here, you can see how close

:07:10. > :07:16.the rugby pitch is to the motorway behind. There are the posts.

:07:16. > :07:20.Crossing behind it, the razed carriageway of the M5. In a

:07:20. > :07:25.statement tonight, the club said it was working closely with the police

:07:25. > :07:31.and it extended thoughts and prayers to the bereaved families.

:07:31. > :07:35.Like the relatives of Tony and Pam Adams. Both in their 70s, who died

:07:35. > :07:40.as they drove home to South Wales after visiting their daughter.

:07:40. > :07:50.Friends and family have described them as a devoted, church-going

:07:50. > :07:51.

:07:52. > :07:58.couple, and say they are heartbroken. Some say, why did it

:07:58. > :08:03.have to be them? Tom Hammill knows it could have been him. He returned

:08:03. > :08:10.to the scene today for the first time after escaping from his car.

:08:10. > :08:15.He is convinced some -- stock is to blame and not black smoke. It was

:08:15. > :08:21.relatively clear visibility. It was like someone had thrown emulsion on

:08:21. > :08:26.the front of the car. It seems most of the victims were just passing

:08:26. > :08:36.through Somerset. That fact has not reduced the sense of pain in the

:08:36. > :08:41.villages neighbouring the M5 have. And Jon is at the scene for us now.

:08:41. > :08:45.48 hours after the pile up, up the motorway has reopened in both

:08:45. > :08:50.directions. That will be some comfort to commuters. This is the

:08:50. > :08:55.key route in and out of the south- west of England. Although the

:08:55. > :08:59.carriageway might have been cleared, the investigation is only just

:08:59. > :09:04.beginning. Police want to talk to officials at the rugby club to find

:09:04. > :09:08.out how the event on Friday night was organised. Meanwhile, families

:09:08. > :09:12.are continuing to carry out the formal identification of some of

:09:12. > :09:18.the victims. Expect more harrowing stories from relatives across

:09:18. > :09:22.Britain over the next few days. investigation has begun into how

:09:22. > :09:25.the body of man, who died in police custody and was supposed to have

:09:25. > :09:28.been buried in Hull more than a decade ago, has turned up in a

:09:29. > :09:37.mortuary in the city. It is understood that the body of a woman

:09:37. > :09:42.may have been buried instead of 37- year-old Christopher Alder. The man

:09:42. > :09:47.lying here on the floor of a police station is 37-year-old Christopher

:09:47. > :09:52.Alder. Officers talk to each other as he is of -- is left motionless

:09:52. > :09:56.for 11 minutes with his trousers round his ankles. He is dying. It

:09:56. > :10:01.was minutes before officers realised the seriousness of the

:10:02. > :10:06.situation and went to his aid. He was an ex-paratrooper and Falklands

:10:06. > :10:09.veteran. Five officers were cleared of manslaughter but an Independent

:10:09. > :10:14.Police Complaints Commission report said officers involved with him a

:10:14. > :10:18.guilty of the most serious neglect of duty and unwitting racism. His

:10:18. > :10:23.sister, Janet, and other family members, thought they had buried

:10:23. > :10:27.him more than a decade ago. Today, at a meeting with the police and

:10:27. > :10:35.Hull City Council, she was told they had laid the wrong body to

:10:35. > :10:41.rest. I am in total shock. I cannot believe, after all we have been

:10:41. > :10:45.through, with the mode of death and everything, there can be so much

:10:45. > :10:50.incompetence. It feels like contents. It feels like adding

:10:50. > :10:53.insult to injury when you try to move on with your life. This

:10:53. > :10:56.evening, the local authority involved said they could not yet

:10:56. > :11:02.explain how the body had laid for so long way it was thought a

:11:02. > :11:07.woman's body was being kept. I can confirm that the body of the man

:11:07. > :11:13.has been identified to me as Christopher Alder. I am appalled

:11:13. > :11:19.and distraught at what I have learned. In conjunction with the

:11:19. > :11:23.East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, we will be undertaking a thorough

:11:23. > :11:27.review of the circumstances surrounding these events.

:11:27. > :11:31.family of Christopher Alder thought this tragic episode in their lives

:11:31. > :11:37.was long past. They will now have to have a funeral service and a

:11:37. > :11:40.burial for him for a second time. A year today, voters will be going to

:11:40. > :11:43.the polls in America to elect a new President. Whether Barack Obama is

:11:43. > :11:47.granted a second term could depend largely on his record in dealing

:11:47. > :11:50.with the economic downturn. Our North America editor, Mark Mardell,

:11:50. > :12:00.has been gauging the mood among voters in the key swing state of

:12:00. > :12:01.

:12:02. > :12:05.North Carolina. Charlotte turns out to see the Panthers player.

:12:06. > :12:12.American football can be brutal but nothing compared to the politics

:12:12. > :12:18.this crucial state will see in the coming year. Views on the President

:12:18. > :12:25.are raw and heated. We need to get him out. He has not got a clue. If

:12:25. > :12:32.it were not for a teleprompter, he would not get through an interview.

:12:32. > :12:37.The last four years have been rough for him. It was the first time this

:12:37. > :12:42.plays had gone Democrat for 30 years. Charlot made its name as

:12:42. > :12:50.headquarters for many big banks. The state has lost 300,000 jobs in

:12:50. > :12:56.the last few years. The woman learning to cat Greens had a steady

:12:56. > :13:01.office job for 11 years. This school retrains those who have lost

:13:01. > :13:07.their jobs. Applications have soared. He is a swing voter who

:13:07. > :13:12.chose a Obama last time and is now disappointed. I am a regular

:13:12. > :13:18.American. I am a United States loving American. I want to make

:13:18. > :13:22.sure we stay on top as a superpower economically. I do not see that

:13:22. > :13:29.happening. I do not know how the future will look. We've vote for

:13:29. > :13:33.him again? I do not believe I will vote for his administration again,

:13:33. > :13:38.unless something dramatic happens. Next year's election will be about

:13:38. > :13:44.getting these people back to work. The Obama wants to spend more money

:13:44. > :13:49.on a new stimulus package. Republicans are stopping him. It is

:13:49. > :13:54.all about enthusiasm. This farmer says it is Conservatives who have

:13:54. > :14:00.the drive. Obama has led the country in the wrong direction.

:14:00. > :14:06.is the opposite to what this country needs. You cannot take

:14:06. > :14:11.Amman, whose life has surrounded himself by a liberal mindset.

:14:11. > :14:17.came here on the eve of the election. We are one day away from

:14:17. > :14:23.changing America. Now the field where he spoke is a building site,

:14:23. > :14:26.a work-in-progress, much like his presidency. The most memorable

:14:26. > :14:30.message from Obama from the last campaign still strikes a chord with

:14:30. > :14:40.the American people. The earnings for hope and change made this time

:14:40. > :14:42.

:14:42. > :14:47.The number of tourists who won not sports fans coming to London next

:14:47. > :14:51.year could fall by 90%. It is said that fears that the City will be

:14:51. > :14:56.too crowded and expensive could hit London.

:14:56. > :14:59.They are landmarks known all over the world and ones that make London

:15:00. > :15:05.a popular destination for international tourists. London gets

:15:05. > :15:11.30 million visitors every year spending 15 billion and tourism

:15:11. > :15:14.accounts for 17% of the London workforce. But there's a warning

:15:14. > :15:20.that instead of benefiting the economy, the Olympics could damage

:15:20. > :15:26.it. According to the European Tour Operators Association, bookings for

:15:26. > :15:30.August are down by 95% on last summer. What it will not be at the

:15:30. > :15:35.moment is a triumph for tourism, and if you're looking for a pay

:15:35. > :15:40.back their will not occur in 2012. London is one of the most popular

:15:40. > :15:44.cities in the world and July and August are the most popular months.

:15:44. > :15:50.But if the tour operators are right, the average number of weekly

:15:50. > :15:54.visitors could fall from 400,000 to around 20,000 and that could have a

:15:54. > :16:02.dramatic impact on the local economy. Would you come next year?

:16:02. > :16:06.I don't think so, no. For too many crowds. It is not for me. I don't

:16:06. > :16:11.think it will be the cost. It would be the number of people and the

:16:11. > :16:14.Transport. It is a busy place anyway. It would not put the off.

:16:14. > :16:18.But the government aggressors that the shortfall of leisure tourists

:16:19. > :16:24.should be more than covered by her Olympic fans. The traditional

:16:24. > :16:29.traveller may not be so common in London but there will be plenty of

:16:30. > :16:34.others to fill the gap. It could affect tourism outside the capital,

:16:34. > :16:38.however. That is because many start and end their trips in London. The

:16:38. > :16:42.Olympics will have to be a phenomenal success to match the

:16:42. > :16:46.expectations. Now for the sport.

:16:46. > :16:50.Good evening. We start with football and Fabio Capello has

:16:50. > :16:55.confirmed this evening that John Terry will be named in his squad

:16:55. > :16:58.for the friendly matches against Spain and Sweden next week. Terry

:16:58. > :17:02.is currently being investigated by the police and the Football

:17:02. > :17:09.Association over an alleged racist remark made to the QPR defender

:17:09. > :17:16.Anton Ferdinand, which he denies. Fabio Capello insists the captain

:17:16. > :17:21.is innocent until proven guilty. Match Of The Day to his honour at

:17:21. > :17:26.the moment, with the highlights of today's games. -- is on at the

:17:26. > :17:35.moment. Owen Coyle admitted he went to mass

:17:35. > :17:45.last night and his prey and paid off. Poles came from Chris Eagles

:17:45. > :17:49.and Ivan Klasnic. -- goals. Wigan remain bottom after

:17:49. > :17:53.losing to Wolves. It is their 8th defeat in a row.

:17:53. > :17:58.Colin Calderwood has been sacked as manager of Hibernian after just

:17:58. > :18:07.over rien charged. Elsewhere, another manager breathes a sigh of

:18:07. > :18:13.relief. Goals from its Stokes and Gary Hooper means that Celtic move

:18:13. > :18:18.up do it -- up the table. Sir Chris Hoy won gold at the track

:18:18. > :18:21.cycling World Cup in Kazakhstan today. The four-time Olympic

:18:21. > :18:25.champion added the sprint title do this will be picked up yesterday in

:18:25. > :18:30.the keirin. There was more success for the British team after Dani
