:00:22. > :00:25.night, after complaining of chest pains. This morning, the Queen went

:00:25. > :00:30.to visit the Duke, along with their children, at the hospital where

:00:30. > :00:37.he'll remain under observation. A challenge to the Kremlin - tens

:00:37. > :00:43.of thousands demonstrate on the streets of Moscow, over alleged

:00:43. > :00:53.electoral fraud. Rangers suffer a setback in the SPL against St

:00:53. > :00:57.

:00:57. > :01:00.Good afternoon. The Queen has been to visit her husband, the Duke of

:01:00. > :01:05.Edinburgh, in hospital, where he's recovering after being treated for

:01:05. > :01:09.a heart problem. The Duke, who is 90, is said to be in good spirits.

:01:09. > :01:12.He also had visits this morning from his four children. The Duke

:01:12. > :01:19.was flown to hospital from Sandringham last night, after

:01:19. > :01:23.complaining of chest pains. Our Royal correspondent reports. It's

:01:23. > :01:30.certainly not the Christmas Eve she could have expected. The Queen en

:01:30. > :01:32.route from sand ring happen to Papworth to visit her husband. She

:01:32. > :01:36.was accompanied by three of her children. The fact that the

:01:36. > :01:40.immediate family went so promptly to the Duke's bedside indicates

:01:40. > :01:46.this was a moment of real anxiety, albeit, one that now appears to

:01:46. > :01:50.have past. A short time after the Queen's visit, the Prince of Wales

:01:50. > :01:53.and The Duchess of Cornwall also arrived from their home in

:01:53. > :01:57.Gloucestershire. According to Buckingham Palace, the Duke, who

:01:57. > :02:02.was 90 last June, spent a good night, after surgeons performed the

:02:02. > :02:07.operation to relieve a blocked artery in his heart. He had been

:02:07. > :02:13.taken to hospital by RAF helicopter, after experiencing chest pains at

:02:13. > :02:17.Sandringham. After tests, doctors decided that what is described as a

:02:17. > :02:20.minimally invasive procedure should be carried out. Up to now, he's

:02:20. > :02:25.been continuing with an active programme of engagements. There

:02:25. > :02:29.were 300 last year alone. Two months ago he was with the Queen in

:02:29. > :02:33.Australia, doing what he's done for very nearly 60 years now -

:02:33. > :02:38.supporting the Queen in every way he can. Sometimes it's small things,

:02:38. > :02:44.like guiding a child through the crowds to meet her. Within the

:02:44. > :02:49.sometimes gruff exterior is a surprisingly sensitive man. Earlier

:02:49. > :02:54.this year, at the time of a 90th birthday, which he tried to play

:02:54. > :03:02.down, he did admit it might be time to ease up. I reckon I've done my

:03:03. > :03:08.bit. I want to enjoy myself a bit now. With less responsibility, less

:03:08. > :03:13.frantic rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think

:03:13. > :03:18.of something to say. On top of that, the memory is going and I can't

:03:18. > :03:21.remember names and things. I'm just sort of winding down. For the Queen

:03:21. > :03:26.and her family, back at Sandringham, the Christmas programme will

:03:26. > :03:30.continue as normal. By coincidence, one of the themes of her Christmas

:03:30. > :03:36.broadcast this year is that of families and wider communities,

:03:36. > :03:39.rallying around to help each other. Family does not necessarily mean

:03:39. > :03:43.blood relatives, but often a description of a community,

:03:43. > :03:47.organisation or nation. On every Christmas morning, the Queen is

:03:47. > :03:56.used to go to church with her husband. He will be absent tomorrow,

:03:56. > :03:58.but very much in the thoughts of his family and others. The

:03:58. > :04:01.procedure the Duke of Edinburgh underwent was to ease a blocked

:04:01. > :04:09.artery. It's a fairly common treatment carried out regularly in

:04:09. > :04:13.Britain. Though, the Duke's age does make it more risky. It's a

:04:13. > :04:19.treatment carried out tens of thousands of times a year across

:04:19. > :04:24.the UK. It's usually done for local anaesthetic. The surgeon being

:04:24. > :04:28.guided by x-ray while inserting a flexible tube. The aim is to get

:04:28. > :04:32.blood flowing to the heart as quickly as possible. Problems

:04:32. > :04:37.arrive when an artery gets narrower or blocked because fatty deposits

:04:37. > :04:42.gradually build up. That reduced blood supply to the heart. Surgeons

:04:42. > :04:48.unblock it by inserting a narrow tuba long the artery to guide in a

:04:48. > :04:52.metal structure called a stent. Once it's in place a balloon

:04:52. > :04:56.extends forcing out the mesh walls and widening artery. The balloon is

:04:56. > :05:02.removed, but the stent stays in place. In a lot of cases it

:05:02. > :05:05.releases drugs to help reduce the risk of the artery narrowing again.

:05:05. > :05:09.Papworth Hospital, where the Duke of Edinburgh's been treated, is

:05:09. > :05:16.very used to carrying out the operation. It's the biggest

:05:17. > :05:24.specialist heart and lung hospital in the ueng king, fitting sepbts --

:05:24. > :05:27.ueng king, fitting 2,000 stents a year. -- the United Kingdom,

:05:27. > :05:31.fitting 2,000 stents a year. More than 80,000 a year have treatment

:05:31. > :05:41.to unblock an artery or fit a stent. The treatment has a success rate of

:05:41. > :05:46.more than 95%. The chances of a complication are very small, just a

:05:46. > :05:49.few percent and whilst they must be higher in someone in their 90s, but

:05:49. > :05:53.if that somebody is motivated and fit and well and looked after

:05:53. > :05:58.themselves, the chance of a quick and complete recovery is very, very

:05:58. > :06:01.high. The Duke of Edinburgh may be anxious to resume his normal

:06:01. > :06:06.activity, but doctors are keeping him under observation for now.

:06:06. > :06:11.There's no reason, though, say experts, why he shouldn't make a

:06:11. > :06:16.speedy recovery. Luisa Baldini is at Papworth Hospital in

:06:16. > :06:19.Cambridgeshire now. What is the latest from the hospital? The Duke

:06:20. > :06:25.of Edinburgh is in good spirits, we have been told, following that

:06:25. > :06:28.visit by the Queen and all four of his children this morning. In fact,

:06:28. > :06:33.the Buckingham Palace spokesperson said he'll be eager to leave now,

:06:33. > :06:38.but he is going to have to stay in here overnight, beyond that, but

:06:38. > :06:41.they don't know exactly, but it was indicated to me he may have to stay

:06:41. > :06:46.here for as long as four to five days, but the Duke of Edinburgh is

:06:46. > :06:51.in very good hands here, as we have been hearing. The Queen's chief

:06:51. > :06:57.physician has also been here today and as we were hearing from Jane,

:06:57. > :07:02.the hospital here is the UK's largest specialised cardiothoracic

:07:02. > :07:05.hospital and carry out over 2,000 stent operations each year. It's

:07:05. > :07:08.routine and patients are often discharged the very next day, but

:07:08. > :07:12.given this special case and the age of Prince Phillip, doctors want to

:07:12. > :07:18.keep him here, so it does seem he will be spending Christmas here in

:07:18. > :07:21.hospital. Thank you. Nicholas Witchell is with me now. A

:07:21. > :07:25.pretty routine procedure, as we were hearing, but what is your

:07:25. > :07:29.thinking on how seer crust this was? I think the family's reaction

:07:29. > :07:33.speaks for itself. This is a family which prides itself on being

:07:33. > :07:37.stowical and not making a fuss and rushing to bed sides, but the Queen

:07:37. > :07:43.and all of their children went to Papworth Hospital very quickly this

:07:43. > :07:46.morning. The Duke has come through it well. He is remarkably fit. He

:07:46. > :07:51.doesn't smoke. He doesn't drink very much. He doesn't have a weight

:07:51. > :07:54.problem. I think the question will now arise, will he need to

:07:54. > :07:58.substantially reduce his workload and we are very close to the die

:07:58. > :08:04.pond Jubilee year. That is not something that he will want to do,

:08:04. > :08:07.but I think that plans for the Jubilee will have to be looked at

:08:07. > :08:14.with very much a consideration of the health not just of the Duke,

:08:14. > :08:18.but also of the Queen. Thank you. Tens of thousands of protesters

:08:18. > :08:24.have been out on the streets of Moscow demonstrating against

:08:24. > :08:27.alleged electoral fraud. They are demanding a re-run of the

:08:27. > :08:30.Parliamentary elections which Vladimir Putin's party won earlier

:08:30. > :08:36.this month. It's the latest in a series of protests across the

:08:36. > :08:40.country. The temperature never got above zero, but it became clear

:08:40. > :08:44.today that Moscow's newly militant voters won't give up easily. They

:08:44. > :08:48.feel that they were cheated in the elections, and they sense that the

:08:48. > :08:58.freedoms that they won at the end of the Communist era are slipping

:08:58. > :08:59.

:08:59. > :09:06.away. We believe that we can change something. We changed it 20 years

:09:06. > :09:10.ago. I'm sure that we can change today. It was the biggest protest

:09:10. > :09:13.of the Vladimir Putin era. Bigger than the one two weeks ago and

:09:13. > :09:20.another challenge to a political establishment that had become too

:09:20. > :09:26.comfortable. The mape complaint was still about cheating at the polls.

:09:26. > :09:30.New elections, they cry. It's the second time in a fortnight that the

:09:30. > :09:34.people of Moscow have braved bitter winter temperatures to come out in

:09:34. > :09:41.their tens of thousands and send a simple message to the Government -

:09:41. > :09:45.we have had enough. It would be a mistake to think the crowd

:09:45. > :09:50.represents all the Russian people. Nobody can be sure how widespread

:09:50. > :09:54.the dissent is, but Moscow hasn't seen defiance like this for decades

:09:54. > :10:00.and now it's happening again and again. The protesters are in a

:10:00. > :10:06.determined frame of mind. We are waiting for transparency. We are

:10:06. > :10:09.waiting for the honesty. Russia is already a democracy of a kind and

:10:09. > :10:13.the Government made concessions to help opposition parties earlier

:10:13. > :10:18.this week, but without overturning the whole political system the

:10:18. > :10:24.protesters want more than just cosmetic changes. Nobody wants a

:10:24. > :10:29.revolution. We just want a fair election and a government that

:10:29. > :10:32.actually represents our interests. The once all powerful Vladimir

:10:32. > :10:41.Putin runs for President again in March. He'll probably still win,

:10:41. > :10:44.but it's not going to be an easy campaign. A member of the Royal Air

:10:44. > :10:48.Force, who was seriously injured in an explosion in Afghanistan on

:10:48. > :10:53.Thursday has died. A Royal marine was also killed in the attack. The

:10:53. > :10:58.blast went off to the south of Kabul, and the sesman was flown

:10:58. > :11:03.back to the UK but -- serviceman was flown back to the UK, but died

:11:03. > :11:07.here and his family has been informed. In the SPL, Rangers

:11:07. > :11:13.suffered their only second defeat of the season losing 2-1 to St

:11:13. > :11:17.Mirren. They were reduced to nine men in a feisty match. The SPL

:11:17. > :11:21.makes no allowances for last-minute shopping plans. Christmas Eve is

:11:21. > :11:26.just another working day. Rangers weren't clocking off early. They

:11:26. > :11:32.were straight in among St Mirren and Lee Wallace took the chance for

:11:32. > :11:36.the first Rangers' goal. St Mirren were squeezed out, but a swing of

:11:36. > :11:41.the elbow swung it back. Rangers were left with ten men for hor more

:11:41. > :11:48.than an hour. They made it not even 20 minutes about Aaron Mooy smashed

:11:48. > :11:56.the resistance apart. The hosts were expertly finding holes in the

:11:56. > :12:00.defence and Paul mac gown dug Rangers into the mire. They fought

:12:00. > :12:04.to climb out but Nikica Jelavic blew the big moment. Their
