:00:20. > :00:24.Good afternoon. An urgent review into the risks

:00:24. > :00:27.associated with breast implants has been announced by the Government.

:00:27. > :00:31.The Heath Secretary is concerned that the existing evidence about

:00:31. > :00:33.the potential dangers is not reliable. Around 40,000 women in

:00:33. > :00:37.Britain are believed to have had silicone implants fitted by a

:00:37. > :00:44.French company, which has been shut down by authorities in France.

:00:44. > :00:47.Here's our medical correspondent, Fergus Walsh. It's a week week

:00:47. > :00:52.since the French Government recommended the removal of all PIP

:00:52. > :00:55.implants. Ministers here maintain that's not necessary, but now

:00:55. > :01:01.they're reviewing the safety data submitted by all those who fitted

:01:01. > :01:07.the implants. If there are any safety concerns, we will act in

:01:08. > :01:12.order to provide them with whatever recommend diis required, I want to

:01:12. > :01:15.reiterate we don't have evidence which would justify any routine

:01:15. > :01:19.removal of these breast implants and we don't have evidence of

:01:19. > :01:24.safety concerns. The PIP implants were banned last

:01:24. > :01:29.year as they contain non-medical grade silicone. Around 40,000

:01:29. > :01:33.British women have the implants, 95% of the surgery was done in

:01:33. > :01:39.private clinics. The French say the implants have a 5% rupture rate,

:01:39. > :01:42.whereas in the UK it's 1%, similar to other brands. But new

:01:42. > :01:47.conflicting evidence from a private health firm suggests the rupture

:01:47. > :01:51.rate here may be higher, too. Jane Parry from Liverpool is

:01:51. > :01:56.worried. Although she's not had any health problems since having the

:01:56. > :02:00.PIP implants fitted, she wants them out. I am shocked. Every day you

:02:00. > :02:04.are reading more stuff, there's more coming out, people are coming

:02:04. > :02:09.forward. You are bumping into people you didn't know had implants

:02:09. > :02:12.and they're worried. Christmas has not been Christmas for thus year.

:02:12. > :02:16.French and British experts stress there is no increased breast cancer

:02:16. > :02:20.reus Africa the PIP -- reus Africa the implants F the review finds

:02:20. > :02:29.they are more like throeu rupture it's not clear whether Ministers

:02:29. > :02:32.here will follow the French lead and offer to pay for their removal.

:02:32. > :02:35.A soldier from 1st Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, has been killed

:02:35. > :02:42.in an explosion in Afghanistan. It happened while he was on foot

:02:42. > :02:44.patrol yesterday in Helmand Province. His family have been told.

:02:44. > :02:47.Syria's two largest opposition groups have signed an agreement to

:02:47. > :02:49.work together, if President Assad falls. The agreement comes as

:02:49. > :02:53.violence within the country continues, despite the presence of

:02:53. > :03:02.Arab League observers. In Idlib, troops used water cannon and

:03:02. > :03:05.gunfire to disperse protestors. Police have started using lie

:03:05. > :03:07.detectors to help them decide which suspects to investigate. A pilot

:03:07. > :03:10.scheme has been run and the Association of Chief Police

:03:10. > :03:12.Officers, which represents forces in England, Wales and Northern

:03:12. > :03:19.Ireland, says the technology could become a useful tool. Sarah

:03:19. > :03:24.Campbell reports. Are you worried about any of the

:03:24. > :03:28.questions on this test... Commonly used by police in the US and TV

:03:28. > :03:31.talk shows the lie detector test is now making its way into the

:03:31. > :03:39.criminal justice system. It can help investigations because if the

:03:39. > :03:42.police have six suspects, say and they polygraph them all, they can

:03:42. > :03:45.hone in on one person and have confidence to think this person is

:03:45. > :03:50.showing deception and the likelihood is, this is the person

:03:50. > :03:54.who committed the crime. The way the body reacts through breathing,

:03:54. > :03:58.heart rate and sweating all indicate whether a sly being told -

:03:58. > :04:03.- whether a lie is being told. Nothing is 100% but any result I

:04:03. > :04:05.give I am confident is the right result. The results are currently

:04:05. > :04:15.inadmissible in court but Hertfordshire Police have been

:04:15. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:26.trialling them on suspected sex Over the past two and a half years

:04:26. > :04:30.hundreds of convicted sex offenders have been compelled to undergo lie

:04:30. > :04:36.detector tests as part of a pilot scheme being run by the Ministry of

:04:36. > :04:41.Justice. Those results are being evaluated. It's up to individual

:04:41. > :04:44.police forces to decide whether to make use of lie detectors, but the

:04:44. > :04:52.Association of Chief Police Officers agrees it could be a

:04:52. > :04:55.useful tool in combating crime. An 18-year-old man has been

:04:55. > :04:57.remanded in custody charged with murdering a teenage babysitter.

:04:57. > :05:00.Catherine Wynter had been looking after her nephew and niece in

:05:00. > :05:04.Borehamwood on Boxing Day, when she was stabbed. Tony Bushby will

:05:04. > :05:07.appear at St Albans Crown Court on Wednesday.

:05:07. > :05:10.Leading figures from the world of entertainment and sport are among

:05:10. > :05:18.those recognised in the Queen's New Year Honours list. This year the

:05:18. > :05:22.list also includes people who've turned a corner in their lives.

:05:22. > :05:26.The BAFTA-winning actress Helena Bonham Carter can now add a new

:05:26. > :05:34.achievement to her accomplishments, after being appointed CBE. She said

:05:35. > :05:39.she was thrilled, though not sure she deserved it.

:05:39. > :05:44.Ronnie Corbett has been delighting audiences for half a century. He's

:05:44. > :05:49.also become a CBE. US Open winning golfer Rory McIlroy

:05:49. > :05:53.becomes an MBE. And an OBE goes to Darren Clarke, winner of the

:05:53. > :05:58.British Open. It's sinking in what I managed to

:05:58. > :06:01.achieve, but the OBE is certainly a massive honour for me and I feel

:06:01. > :06:05.hugely privileged to be awarded the honour.

:06:05. > :06:09.Also recognised are people who have taken their lives in a new

:06:09. > :06:15.direction. Gerald Ronson was jailed in 1990 for his part in the

:06:15. > :06:19.Guinness share scandal. He's now become a CBE, for his charity work

:06:19. > :06:22.work since his release. Christopher Preddie is also someone who has

:06:22. > :06:26.turned his life around. As a teenager he was involved with gangs

:06:27. > :06:32.and drugs, but for the last eight years he's devoted his time to

:06:32. > :06:35.youth work and reducing crime. He's become an OBE. I think that from

:06:35. > :06:39.the background I have come from and a lot of things I had to go through

:06:40. > :06:44.and struggles, it's an honour to be such a great award and the fact I

:06:44. > :06:48.now have an OBE is fantastic. And I think any kid can now see from that

:06:48. > :06:52.hard work does pay off. And he's typical of most of the names on

:06:52. > :07:02.this year's list. People not in the public eye, who are being honoured

:07:02. > :07:05.

:07:05. > :07:08.for making a significant contribution to their community.

:07:08. > :07:10.Football, and in today's early Premier League game bottom club,

:07:10. > :07:13.Blackburn, pulled off a shock win against Manchester United. Joe

:07:13. > :07:17.Wilson watched the action. 70 today, Sir Alex Ferguson has

:07:17. > :07:27.learned to tkppt the -- expect the unexpected. Mascots with birthday

:07:27. > :07:31.

:07:32. > :07:35.cards, fine. But watch what Blackburn's attack was simply

:07:35. > :07:41.Yakubu. Seeing him is one thing, stopping him another. 2-0. Old

:07:41. > :07:48.Trafford was stunned and United were stung into a response. Two

:07:48. > :07:54.goals followed by Berbatov. United reasserted themselves in classic

:07:54. > :07:58.fashion. And then folded. The goalkeeper was weak in the presence

:07:58. > :08:04.of Hapbley. Blackburn were direct and determined. Their manager had

:08:04. > :08:11.been inspired by Ferguson's support but Steve Kean could not have

:08:11. > :08:14.managed this generosity. Whose birthday was it?

:08:14. > :08:16.Andy Murray has appointed the former world tennis number one,

:08:16. > :08:20.Ivan Lendl, as his new, full-time coach. Czech-born Lendl, who won

:08:20. > :08:24.eight Grand Slams, will start work with Murray, who hasn't had a coach

:08:24. > :08:27.since March, immediately. Celebrations to mark the start of

:08:27. > :08:29.2012, are well under way all around the world. Here, thousands of

:08:29. > :08:32.people will pack into Edinburgh city centre, for the traditional

:08:32. > :08:36.Hogmanay street party. In London, up to a quarter of million people,

:08:36. > :08:44.are expected to watch the fireworks along the Thames. Phil Bodmer

:08:44. > :08:48.reports. The first big display to welcome in

:08:48. > :08:52.2012, fireworks lighting up the night sky over Auckland in New

:08:52. > :08:56.Zealand. In Australia, Sydney's famous bridge was the setting for

:08:57. > :09:00.events down under. This year's theme being a time to dream, as an

:09:00. > :09:05.estimated one and a half million people lined the foreshore to watch

:09:05. > :09:11.a display costing 4 million. And large crowds gathered around

:09:11. > :09:15.Victoria harbour in Hong Kong to watch fireworks set off from some

:09:15. > :09:19.of the city's best landmarks. In Edinburgh, final preparations are

:09:19. > :09:22.being made for the traditional Hogmanay sell wraeugss --

:09:22. > :09:28.celebrations, up to 80,000 are expected to attend. In London, as

:09:28. > :09:34.technicians made their final checks on three barges in the Thames,

:09:34. > :09:39.spectators, some waiting for hours, began taking up their pitches.

:09:39. > :09:44.wanted to be here to get the best spot. Normally we sit at home and

:09:44. > :09:48.watch from there, but we wanted to come up and actually be here for

:09:48. > :09:51.the environment. The area around the embankment has been cordoned

:09:51. > :09:55.off and a number of road closures will remain in place until Sunday
