:00:18. > :00:21.Good afternoon. Almost 150 people are now thought

:00:21. > :00:26.to have been killed in a wave of coordinated bomb attacks in

:00:26. > :00:30.northern Nigeria. A militant Islamist group said it carried out

:00:30. > :00:33.the killings - the latest in a string of sectarian attacks.

:00:33. > :00:38.Eyewitnesses spoke of as many as 30 separate explosions at government

:00:38. > :00:41.buildings in the city of Kano, north east of the capital Abuja. In

:00:41. > :00:45.the last few minutes, Foreign Secretary William Hague has said he

:00:45. > :00:50.was shocked and appalled by the attacks. From Nigeria our Africa

:00:50. > :00:54.correspondent, Andrew Harding, reports. Fires and chaos, the

:00:54. > :00:59.immediate aftermath of the devastating attacks. This was one

:00:59. > :01:03.of several police stations targeted in Kano. The carefully co-ordinated

:01:03. > :01:07.assault by armed militants spread panic across this huge northern

:01:07. > :01:13.Nigerian city. More than 100 people are now known to have died. The gun

:01:13. > :01:17.battles and bombings lasted several hours. As explosions, sounds of

:01:17. > :01:22.explosions, four of them before I came out. On my way out I saw a

:01:22. > :01:26.dead body. A young man was lying dead. Outside the city morgue,

:01:26. > :01:31.angry, anxious families have been waiting for news, with more bodies

:01:31. > :01:36.being brought in throughout the day. We think that the number will

:01:36. > :01:40.definitely rise. The number of attacks are multiple. There are so

:01:40. > :01:45.many buildings that were involved, so many people may be buried under

:01:45. > :01:49.the debris. A militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, said it carried

:01:49. > :01:53.out the attacks, by far the most devastating in a string of recent

:01:53. > :01:58.atrocities. On Christmas Day, Boko Haram targeted churches in the

:01:58. > :02:03.region, and warned Christians to leave the north of the country.

:02:03. > :02:08.These are uncertain times for Nigeria. Boko Haram has emerged as

:02:08. > :02:12.a sophisticated, ambitious, well organised threat. The President now

:02:12. > :02:18.says the group has infiltrated the government and the security

:02:18. > :02:23.services. Today, the city of Kano is under a strict curfew, with the

:02:23. > :02:27.attacks clearly designed as a show of force, and they have exposed the

:02:27. > :02:31.limitations of Nigeria's security services and badly shaken this vast

:02:31. > :02:33.nation. A woman's body was recovered this

:02:33. > :02:38.afternoon from the wreck of the Italian cruise liner, the Costa

:02:38. > :02:42.Concordia. It brings the confirmed number of dead to 12. Rescue teams

:02:42. > :02:49.are still searching for 20 other people who are unaccounted for.

:02:50. > :02:54.Live now to our correspondent at the scene, Luisa Baldini. Yes, the

:02:54. > :02:59.woman's body was found on the 4th deck of the ship, apparently in a

:02:59. > :03:04.very narrow corridor. She was wearing her life jacket. Many

:03:04. > :03:07.relatives of the missing passengers are here on Giglio, and they have

:03:07. > :03:13.been waiting for any news as the search operation has been

:03:13. > :03:17.continuing. Landing on top of the Concordia, Italian firefighters are

:03:17. > :03:23.winched down to continue their search of the drier parts of the

:03:23. > :03:27.ship. At sea level, divers who had been preparing since Dawn used

:03:27. > :03:36.explosive devices to blast holes into the side of the ship on the

:03:36. > :03:41.5th deck. We carry out some controlled explosions, to break

:03:41. > :03:48.down these big windows and these windows. Bruno, a navy commander,

:03:48. > :03:54.showed me where the divers had been working. On the ship, it is full of

:03:54. > :03:58.water. No air inside, at this moment. The search operation has

:03:58. > :04:03.been stopping and starting over the last few days, and that has

:04:03. > :04:06.prompted questions about how long, exactly, it is going to last. The

:04:06. > :04:11.Italian coastguards say they will continue until they are confident

:04:11. > :04:16.every part of the ship has been searched. But scouring this

:04:16. > :04:20.colossal steel carcass is taking time, so the authorities are now

:04:20. > :04:24.considering the possibilities of beginning to pump oil out of the

:04:24. > :04:29.Concordia, while the search continues. More than 2000 tonnes of

:04:29. > :04:34.fuel are still on board, prompting fears of an environmental disaster

:04:34. > :04:40.she did begin leaking. To that end, an Italian Navy ship, which

:04:40. > :04:46.specialises in oil spills, has been moored nearby as a precaution.

:04:46. > :04:53.is a semi- floating device, which basically will attract the oil and

:04:53. > :05:01.separate it from the water, and then we can use our ship equipment

:05:01. > :05:04.to pump this Seoul into our storing depots. -- this oil. For now, there

:05:05. > :05:11.has been no leak, the water is clear enough to see some of the

:05:11. > :05:16.passengers belongings, which were left when the Concordia keeled over.

:05:16. > :05:21.It has been confirmed that a Save has been recovered from Captain

:05:21. > :05:25.Francesco Schettino's cabin. Once it is open, the contents will be

:05:25. > :05:29.handed to the prosecutor as evidence. Also found are his

:05:29. > :05:34.passport, a data disk and his uniform. There are suggestions he

:05:34. > :05:37.changed out of it before abandoning ship.

:05:37. > :05:40.British officials in Iraq are preparing to fly home the body of

:05:40. > :05:44.the hostage Alan McMenemy, after it was handed over to the UK embassy

:05:44. > :05:48.in Baghdad yesterday. Mr McMenemy - a security guard - was one of five

:05:48. > :05:58.men taken by Shi'ite militants in 2007. Our security correspondent,

:05:58. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:03.Frank Gardner, reports. Alan McMenemy, speaking from

:06:03. > :06:08.captivity, before being killed by his Iraqi captors. After nearly

:06:08. > :06:14.five years, they have handed over his body. It marks a tragic ending

:06:14. > :06:18.to a murky story, that began on the streets of Baghdad in May 2007. In

:06:18. > :06:22.broad daylight, the five Britons were snatched from Iraq's finance

:06:22. > :06:26.ministry. Dozens of gunmen arrived in vehicles, dressed as policemen,

:06:26. > :06:30.and drove them off towards the Shi'ite district. The men were

:06:30. > :06:34.taken to the Sadr City area of Baghdad, beaten, stripped and

:06:35. > :06:38.eventually separated. Their captors, the Shia militia, demanded a

:06:38. > :06:41.prisoner swap. They wanted the release of their own leaders from

:06:41. > :06:44.this US detention centre. The British Government says it does not

:06:44. > :06:48.make substantial concessions to kidnappers, but it tried every

:06:48. > :06:53.other means to free them. In the end, only this hostage came out

:06:53. > :06:56.alive. Does he now think the government did enough? I believe

:06:56. > :07:02.what the Foreign Office did at the time was with good intentions, but

:07:02. > :07:07.it was a bad result. That is all I can say. I suppose they need to

:07:07. > :07:12.review it, and sort of not do whatever they did with the next

:07:12. > :07:15.hostage case, to try to get a better result. Alan McMenemy is the

:07:15. > :07:19.last of the five hostages to be returned. The bodies of Alec

:07:19. > :07:24.MacLachlan from South Wales, Jason Swindlehurst from Lancashire and

:07:24. > :07:29.chicken Creswell from Glasgow were all handed over in 2009 -- Jason

:07:29. > :07:33.Creswell. Peter Moore was released the same year. Britain's longest-

:07:33. > :07:36.running kidnap crisis for a generation is now over.

:07:36. > :07:39.A prominent Irish republican - who was cleared yesterday of murdering

:07:39. > :07:43.two British soldiers - is claiming his DNA was planted in a getaway

:07:43. > :07:46.car. Colin Duffy was accused of killing Royal Engineers Patrick

:07:46. > :07:50.Azimkar and Mark Quinsey in 2009, in a gun attack by dissident

:07:50. > :07:58.republicans. Our Ireland correspondent, Mark Simpson,

:07:58. > :08:01.reports. Colin Duffy spent almost three

:08:01. > :08:06.years in jail awaiting trial. Yesterday, he was found not guilty

:08:06. > :08:10.of murdering sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey. It was

:08:10. > :08:14.the third time he had been cleared of murder. Today, he spoke for the

:08:14. > :08:19.first time about the killings of the two soldiers at Massereene

:08:19. > :08:22.Barracks. We state quite categorically here that I had no

:08:22. > :08:29.involvement in what happened at Massereene. No involvement

:08:29. > :08:36.whatsoever. How can he explain his DNA being found in the getaway car?

:08:36. > :08:42.My DNA was, in my opinion, planted there. One man has been convicted

:08:42. > :08:46.of the murders. 46-year-old Brian Shivers. But the police say the

:08:46. > :08:50.investigation will continue. Detectives believe up to six people

:08:51. > :08:54.were involved in the killings, and next week, they are expected to

:08:54. > :09:03.appeal for more information from the public in Northern Ireland, to

:09:03. > :09:07.help bring them to justice. Sport now, and Andy Murray's hopes

:09:07. > :09:10.of winning his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open are still alive.

:09:10. > :09:13.He beat his opponent in straight sets to reach the last 16, and said

:09:13. > :09:17.he had "fun" on the way. Tim Franks watched the action.

:09:17. > :09:21.Andy Murray is a Scot who seems to feel at home in Australia. He is

:09:21. > :09:27.now gunning for his third consecutive final there. In his way

:09:27. > :09:30.today, the Frenchman, Michel Llodra. Defenceless early on against

:09:31. > :09:35.Murray's deadly peril at. The Frenchman had earlier questioned

:09:35. > :09:42.whether Murray might be too passive. The world number For first past the

:09:42. > :09:49.post riposte was unintentionally painful. Another undisguised

:09:49. > :09:55.account -- disguised backhand prompting mirth. Llodra was no

:09:55. > :10:01.fall-guy and patted a winner around the net. How to top that? Try set

:10:01. > :10:05.to link the second set with a last ditch hot dog following with a

:10:05. > :10:13.somersault. Llodra could only stand in awe as Murray swept the third

:10:13. > :10:16.set to love with a perfect lob. The Scot is through to the last 16, and
