:01:13. > :01:16.A British teacher has been killed, and four people seriously injured,

:01:16. > :01:19.after a coach bringing children home from a school trip crashed in

:01:19. > :01:21.Northern France. Peter Rippington, 59, taught at Alvechurch Middle

:01:21. > :01:26.School in Worcestershire. His family said they are "devastated"

:01:26. > :01:29.by his death. One of those seriously injured is a young girl

:01:29. > :01:31.who's been airlifted by helicopter to a specialist children's hospital

:01:31. > :01:41.in Paris. From the scene, our correspondent Hugh Schofield sent

:01:41. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :01:48.this report. 3am, heading north, through the

:01:48. > :01:57.French countryside, the coach began gearing to the right. It crashed on

:01:57. > :02:00.its side, down a small embankment. Peter Rippington, 59, a teacher at

:02:00. > :02:05.Alvechurch Middle School, was killed. His wife is recovering in

:02:05. > :02:12.hospital. Scores of emergency workers helped through the night.

:02:12. > :02:17.The injured were taken to hospital. One seriously injured girl was

:02:17. > :02:20.airlifted to Paris. Those who survived were looked after by the

:02:20. > :02:25.Red Cross in a day care centre before resuming their journey by

:02:25. > :02:31.train. I am very grateful for what the French authorities have been

:02:31. > :02:36.doing, here since the early hours. The embassy and consular staff have

:02:36. > :02:42.been here early on. We have sadly one gentle man dead, a number of

:02:42. > :02:48.injuries, all of them are being taken care of in hospital.

:02:48. > :02:52.Alvechurch, families gathered at the school, desperate for news. A

:02:52. > :02:58.second bus carrying others was not involved in the accident and a ride

:02:58. > :03:03.back during the afternoon. For many parents, it was an anxious wait.

:03:03. > :03:10.have been into the school to find out and they told me she is OK. A

:03:10. > :03:16.broken arm and a cut head. Minor injuries. Parents and pupils paid

:03:16. > :03:21.tribute to Peter Rippington who had led the school skiing party. He was

:03:21. > :03:27.just amazing. The most popular teacher in the world. Everyone

:03:27. > :03:33.called him a legend. You could tell him anything. They really lovable

:03:33. > :03:37.guy. Meanwhile back in France, an investigation into the cause of the

:03:37. > :03:42.crash is getting under way. Police are holding the 47-year-old driver

:03:42. > :03:46.of the coach. He escaped with minor injuries.

:03:46. > :03:50.Preliminary tests have shown no traces of alcohol or drugs in the

:03:50. > :03:58.bloodstream of the driver. Police are working under the theory he

:03:58. > :04:00.probably does off at the wheel -- dozed off. Police are questioning a

:04:00. > :04:03.47-year-old man tonight, over two murders.

:04:03. > :04:06.Stephen Farrow was arrested this morning in connection with the

:04:06. > :04:08.death of the Gloucestershire vicar, the Reverend John Suddards. This

:04:08. > :04:11.afternoon, detectives also arrested Mr Farrow over last month's murder

:04:11. > :04:19.of a Worcestershire pensioner, Betty Yates. Sangita Myska has the

:04:19. > :04:24.details. 24 hours after an appeal for

:04:24. > :04:29.information by police, 47-year-old Stephen Farrow is under arrest. He

:04:29. > :04:33.was found at this house in Folkestone following a tip-off by a

:04:33. > :04:37.member of the public. He has been arrested in connection with the

:04:37. > :04:41.murder of Reverend John Suddards who was found with multiple stab

:04:41. > :04:47.wounds at his vicarage in Thornbury on Tuesday. He had arrived here

:04:47. > :04:52.from Essex in July of where he had previously been filmed by the BBC.

:04:52. > :04:58.This morning, for the first time since his death, parishioners were

:04:58. > :05:05.allowed to attend a service at a church. Healing will take a long

:05:05. > :05:11.time. And of course, they have still got to face a Funeral, and

:05:11. > :05:17.eventually a trial. But, I wanted to come here this morning, to

:05:17. > :05:20.assure them that they will not need to handle that alone. In a new

:05:20. > :05:26.development, West Mercia Police have also arrested Stephen Farrow

:05:26. > :05:31.in connection with a murder here in Worcestershire. The victim was

:05:31. > :05:36.Betty Yates, 77, stabbed to death in January. At the time, her

:05:37. > :05:41.children made this emotional appeal. To lose your mum is always dreadful.

:05:41. > :05:45.But, to lose your mum like this, when you worry constantly about how

:05:45. > :05:50.frightened she might have been or what she might have felt during

:05:50. > :05:54.such a vicious attack is like a nightmare. The tonight, Stephen

:05:54. > :05:57.Farrow remained under the arrest of two separate police forces who say

:05:57. > :06:00.they are working together to examine similarities between both

:06:00. > :06:05.killings. Police and protesters have clashed

:06:05. > :06:08.in Athens. On the eve of crucial talks about a European Union

:06:08. > :06:11.bailout needed to avoid a Greek default. Police fired tear gas

:06:11. > :06:13.outside the Parliament building, as scuffles broke out with

:06:13. > :06:17.demonstrators opposed to the government's austerity plans. Hopes

:06:17. > :06:22.for a deal on a new package of financial support for Greece have

:06:22. > :06:26.risen, after Athens agreed to new budget cuts.

:06:26. > :06:29.The Iranian government says it has halted sales of oil to Britain and

:06:29. > :06:33.France in retaliation for a pending European Union ban on Iran's oil

:06:33. > :06:36.exports. It says it will sell oil to new customers instead. The EU is

:06:36. > :06:42.stepping up sanctions because of fears that Iran is developing a

:06:42. > :06:46.nuclear bomb. The Foreign Secretary William Hague

:06:46. > :06:48.says he's worried that Syria will "slide into civil war" and that the

:06:48. > :06:52.international community is "constrained" in its attempts to

:06:52. > :06:56.end almost a year of conflict there. Syrian tanks have been seen moving

:06:56. > :06:58.into suburbs of the city of Homs, raising fears that a ground attack

:06:58. > :07:01.against rebel fighters there is imminent. Our Middle East

:07:01. > :07:11.correspondent Wyre Davies has been speaking to refugees who've made

:07:11. > :07:13.

:07:13. > :07:18.the perilous journey across the Syrian border into Lebanon.

:07:18. > :07:24.An ominous sight for people still trapped inside Homs. Pictures taken

:07:24. > :07:29.in the last couple of days showed tanks advancing menacingly towards

:07:29. > :07:33.areas under opposition control. Dozens of foot soldiers follow.

:07:33. > :07:40.Evidence perhaps the Assad regime is preparing for a final push on

:07:41. > :07:45.the city. Those who have got out of Syria in recent days talk of a

:07:45. > :07:50.worsening humanitarian crisis. A regime determined to crush its

:07:50. > :07:57.opponents. The Syrian government denies targeting civilians but this

:07:57. > :08:01.man from Homs says he was deliberately shot by an army patrol.

:08:01. > :08:04.TRANSLATION: The city's hospital is being used as a base by the Army,

:08:04. > :08:10.people are dying because they cannot get medical help. Their only

:08:10. > :08:17.option is to escape. In the next room, a man who lost his leg to

:08:17. > :08:23.land Vine. Getting out of Homs isn't easy. But still, people take

:08:23. > :08:28.extraordinary risks. Tiny amounts of food and medical aid smuggled

:08:28. > :08:32.across a border fraught with danger. Braving terrible conditions and

:08:32. > :08:36.freshly laid minefields on the Syrian side of this border, dozens

:08:36. > :08:45.of refugees are nonetheless coming across every day it into the

:08:45. > :08:49.relative safety of Lebanon. Sheltering in a run-down told

:08:49. > :08:59.primary school, many refugees have stories of terrible suffering in

:08:59. > :09:03.besieged Tyrian -- Syrian towns. This father cradles his son. But he

:09:03. > :09:13.and his sick wife still mourn their three-year-old boy, murdered, he

:09:13. > :09:13.

:09:13. > :09:18.says, by the Assad regime. TRANSLATION: At I was smuggling

:09:18. > :09:22.food in, he says, when officers came looking for me. They took my

:09:22. > :09:30.son as a hostage, saying they would kill him if I did not give myself

:09:30. > :09:36.up. They killed him anyway. Making the most of things, children

:09:36. > :09:41.find a space to play. Their parents haven't heard from relatives stuck

:09:41. > :09:46.inside Syria for days. A man is critically ill in hospital,

:09:46. > :09:49.after being shot by police in south London. Officers say they were

:09:49. > :09:51.investigating a car break-in, when a man threatened them with a large

:09:51. > :09:55.bladed weapon. The Independent Police Complaints Commission will

:09:56. > :09:59.investigate the incident. The boxer Dereck Chisora has been

:09:59. > :10:01.released without charge by police in Germany, following a brawl with

:10:01. > :10:05.another British heavyweight, David Haye. Blows were exchanged at a

:10:05. > :10:07.news conference after Chisora lost a fight against the reigning WBC

:10:07. > :10:17.champion, Vitali Klitschko, o Ukraine. There is flash photography

:10:17. > :10:18.

:10:18. > :10:25.in this report from Andy Swiss. Why don't you fight me now?

:10:25. > :10:28.wasn't the fight we expected, but it's the one we will remember.

:10:28. > :10:31.David Haye was working as a TV pundit, so when he challenged

:10:31. > :10:37.Dereck Chisora, it seemed the usual pantomime knockabout. But as

:10:37. > :10:43.Chisora came to confront him, what followed was chaos. For several

:10:43. > :10:46.minutes, it was utter pandemonium. Reporters and cameras sent flying,

:10:46. > :10:50.as David Haye and Chisora descended into an ugly bar room brawl.

:10:50. > :10:55.Attempts to break them up proved fruitless. At one point, David Haye

:10:56. > :11:02.brandished a camera tripod. Even boxing has rarely seen anything

:11:02. > :11:10.like it. Eventually David Haye left, with Chisora threatening to shoot

:11:10. > :11:14.him. (BEEP). In the melee, David Hayes' manager was left with a gash

:11:14. > :11:17.to his head. Recriminations had just begun. At Munich Airport,

:11:17. > :11:22.Chisora was arrested and questioned by police. He was released without

:11:22. > :11:26.charge. The sport will want answers. At first hand, that's the worst

:11:26. > :11:36.I've seen. And hopefully I will never see it again. It doesn't do

:11:36. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:41.anybody any favours. It is stupid and terrible behaviour. Outside the

:11:41. > :11:45.ring, Chisora had already disgraced himself, slapping Vitali Klitschko

:11:45. > :11:47.at the weigh-in, and spitting water in his brother's face. Inside the

:11:47. > :11:56.ring, he fought bravely against Klitschko, losing his world title

:11:56. > :11:59.fight on points. But it's for this impromptu bout that he and David

:11:59. > :12:02.Haye may now pay a heavy price The Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls is

:12:02. > :12:07.calling for tax cuts in next month's Budget, to boost economic

:12:07. > :12:11.growth. He says the government should cut

:12:11. > :12:14.VAT, or income tax, for a year, to encourage people to spend. The

:12:14. > :12:24.government says it must stick to its economic plans and cut the

:12:24. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:32.deficit. Here's our political Recently, the economy has been

:12:32. > :12:36.shrinking, not growing. Living standards have been falling. Labour

:12:36. > :12:39.says the way to get more money into the economy and people's pockets is

:12:39. > :12:43.to have significant, short-term tax cuts. We need growth. We would get

:12:43. > :12:46.the economy moving, it's the only way to get the deficit down. A

:12:46. > :12:54.temporary VAT cut is the fairest way. There are other options for

:12:54. > :12:57.families but he needs to act. he set out alternatives to cutting

:12:57. > :12:59.VAT, which are designed to put pressure on the Chancellor, echoing

:12:59. > :13:02.calls for tax cuts from coalition MPs.

:13:02. > :13:12.These include a reduction in the basic rate of income tax for 12

:13:12. > :13:15.months. This should appeal to some Conservatives.

:13:15. > :13:19.Taking people out of tax entirely if they earn less than 10,000 a

:13:19. > :13:21.year, a longer term aim of the government, and popular with Lib

:13:21. > :13:25.Dems. Ed Balls says the 12 billion cost

:13:25. > :13:28.of his tax cuts should be paid for by more borrowing. As the

:13:28. > :13:36.Chancellor writes next month's Budget in Downing Street, he will

:13:36. > :13:41.be aware there are no easy answers. Unless he does more to stimulate a

:13:41. > :13:45.sluggish economy, he could end up with a higher benefits bill. If he

:13:45. > :13:49.takes the advice of Ed Balls, the man who wants to replace him at

:13:49. > :13:54.Number 11, he could find that isn't a cost-free option. Where we can,

:13:55. > :13:58.we have to keep taxes low. In the end, we have to deal with debt. And

:13:58. > :14:02.Ed Balls is the man who racked those debts up in the first place

:14:02. > :14:07.and now wants us to borrow. Chancellor says his ambition is to

:14:07. > :14:10.reduce taxation. But, struggling to bring down borrowing, he believes

:14:10. > :14:14.big tax cuts now would be too costly.

:14:15. > :14:19.Now with news of some surprises in the FA Cup, and all of the day's

:14:19. > :14:23.sport, here's Matt Gooderick. Premier League high-flyers

:14:23. > :14:26.Tottenham face an FA Cup replay with Stevenage, after being held to

:14:26. > :14:29.a goalless draw by the League One side. Elsewhere, there were wins

:14:29. > :14:38.for Stoke, and Liverpool, who hit Brighton for six at Anfield as

:14:38. > :14:43.And dress it up how you want, this was a crushing 4 Brighton.

:14:43. > :14:48.Their day at Anfield began turning sour when Martin Skrttel scored

:14:48. > :14:53.early on. There was to be one sweet moment, this free kick was one to

:14:54. > :15:00.remember. Suddenly, the sea gulls macro will want to forget the rest

:15:00. > :15:06.of what happened. The Reds kept extending their lead. Andy Carroll

:15:07. > :15:14.showed what he can do. Then, Liam Bridcutt. And an unfortunate own

:15:14. > :15:24.goal. Liverpool simply kept coming, they

:15:24. > :15:24.

:15:24. > :15:28.won a penalty. Kenny Dalglish called for Suarez. He got his goal

:15:28. > :15:35.in the end. Liverpool are now joint favourite for the Cup. They rated

:15:35. > :15:43.level with Tottenham. Louis Saha thought he had grabbed a goal, but

:15:43. > :15:46.it hit the only offside player on the pitch on its way it in.

:15:46. > :15:49.Every plate and place in the quarter-final draw will do them.

:15:49. > :15:54.So vote had 10 men for most of their time with Crawley. It didn't

:15:54. > :15:58.show. This penalty giving them the lead before Peter Crouch nodded

:15:58. > :16:02.them into the last eight. Last year's finalists will have similar

:16:02. > :16:07.lofty ambitions this time. Celtic have moved 17 points clear of

:16:07. > :16:11.Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League. Neil Lennon's side

:16:11. > :16:14.beat Hibernian 5-0 at Easter Road. It was Celtic's ninth straight

:16:14. > :16:17.League win. Gary Hooper scored twice either side of half-time. The

:16:17. > :16:20.result edges the Glasgow side ever closer to a first SPL title for

:16:20. > :16:24.four years. In the day's other game, Aberdeen

:16:24. > :16:28.and St Johnstone drew 0-0. Sir Chris Hoy won his second gold

:16:28. > :16:30.medal of cycling's Track World Cup, with victory in the men's sprint at

:16:30. > :16:34.London's Olympic Velodrome. Hoy beat Germany's Maximilian Levi,

:16:34. > :16:44.winning the first two races in the best of three final. So, all going

:16:44. > :16:44.

:16:44. > :16:48.well, with the Olympics now just over five months away.

:16:48. > :16:52.I was really pleased with the when I rode because I have been making

:16:52. > :16:58.mistakes in the sprint with a lick, and I made only one or two today

:16:58. > :17:01.which is very good for me. It is a learning process. I see this as a

:17:01. > :17:05.really important process towards the Olympics.

:17:05. > :17:08.Team GB also picked up a silver in the men's team pursuit, and a

:17:08. > :17:10.bronze in the women's omnium, on the final day of competition. So

:17:10. > :17:19.another successful week for Britain's cyclists, who finished

:17:19. > :17:23.top of the overall medals table. The main news tonight: A British
