:00:13. > :00:17.Violent protests in Bahrain, on the eve of the Grand Prix.

:00:17. > :00:20.Thousands of people take to the streets again, after the death of a

:00:20. > :00:22.protester. Security forces are accused of the

:00:22. > :00:30.killing. Tonight, Britain urges Bahrain's

:00:30. > :00:34.government to act with restraint. Dozens are seriously injured, after

:00:34. > :00:44.two trains collide near Amsterdam. Tributes have been paid to the

:00:44. > :00:48.Labour peer and disability campaigner, Lord Ashley, who's died.

:00:48. > :00:58.And, a classic finish, to finish off El Classico. Real Madrid beat

:00:58. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:10.Barcelona in the battle for the Good evening, There have been more

:01:10. > :01:14.violent clashes between protesters and police in Bahrain, where the

:01:14. > :01:17.Formula 1 Grand Prix is scheduled to go ahead tomorrow.

:01:17. > :01:21.A protester has been found dead. Opposition parties say he was

:01:21. > :01:23.killed by riot police. Tonight, the Foreign Secretary William Hague

:01:23. > :01:33.called on Bahrain's government to exercise restraint. Our

:01:33. > :01:35.

:01:35. > :01:39.correspondent Dan Roan is in Bahrain and sent this report.

:01:39. > :01:43.Violent protests on the streets of borrowing, as demonstrators and

:01:43. > :01:48.security forces clashed. Thousands of demonstrators demanding

:01:48. > :01:53.political reform, many bitterly opposed to the Grand Prix taking

:01:53. > :01:57.place here. With News at One of their own has died. These pictures

:01:58. > :02:06.appear to show the body of a protester, up on the roof where he

:02:06. > :02:12.was found dead. A cameraman appears to come under fire from security

:02:12. > :02:16.forces as he records the scene. The victim was 37, it is claimed he was

:02:16. > :02:22.killed by shotgun pellets fired by police. The investigation into his

:02:22. > :02:26.death is under way. The government claimed they found his body. At the

:02:26. > :02:30.same time, youths are being surrounded by armoured vehicles,

:02:31. > :02:37.they had been arrested. Just because the government wants it to

:02:37. > :02:47.seem like it is completely quiet while the Formula One takes place.

:02:47. > :02:50.This is a fortress in the desert, a heightened security presence. The

:02:50. > :02:58.drivers are here simply to drive, their eyes are firmly on the road

:02:58. > :03:04.ahead and tomorrow's race. John Todd is the -- Jean Todt was asked

:03:04. > :03:09.whether the death of a protester changed things? I feel very

:03:09. > :03:16.comfortable, having the race in Bahrain, after a great Grand Prix

:03:16. > :03:20.we had in China last week. Before going in three weeks have to

:03:20. > :03:25.Barcelona for the first Europe Grand Prix. The Crown Prince

:03:25. > :03:32.arrived at the track today as qualifying took place, part of the

:03:32. > :03:37.Sunni royalty struggling to contain the anger of the Shia majority. He

:03:37. > :03:42.has defied calls for the event to be cancelled, despite the inability

:03:42. > :03:46.of the sport's governing body to guarantee a trouble-free race. It

:03:46. > :03:51.emerged that Foreign Secretary had called his counterpart in Bahrain

:03:51. > :03:54.to express his concern at the violence here, to call for

:03:54. > :04:01.restraint when dealing with the protests, and to urge further

:04:01. > :04:07.reforms. There has been restrained by the security forces. One must

:04:07. > :04:12.not forget that some small minority of those protesters resort to

:04:12. > :04:18.violence. Today's qualifying session took place against a

:04:18. > :04:22.backdrop of virtually empty Grand stands. Sebastian Vettel back on

:04:22. > :04:28.pole position for the first time this season. This is a race weekend

:04:28. > :04:32.like the weather, when taking risks is expected, but a decision to defy

:04:32. > :04:36.critics and drive through with the most controversial of races could

:04:36. > :04:39.be its biggest gamble yet. Two passenger trains have collided

:04:39. > :04:42."head-on" outside the Dutch city of Amsterdam. The accident has left

:04:42. > :04:46.more than 60 people injured, many of them seriously. It's not yet

:04:46. > :04:48.known what caused the crash, but neither train is said to have come

:04:48. > :04:56.off the rails. Our world affairs correspondent Caroline Hawley

:04:56. > :05:00.reports. Slowly, Caerphilly, the injured are

:05:00. > :05:05.brought to safety. Casualties of a head-on collision between two

:05:05. > :05:10.crowded trains. The crash took place at 6:30pm, throwing

:05:10. > :05:19.passengers around the carriages in a terrifying ordeal. Many suffered

:05:19. > :05:23.neck injuries and broken bones. Some are very seriously hurt. The

:05:23. > :05:26.emergency services are said to have a right quickly. But the rescue

:05:26. > :05:31.effort was slow. Some of the injured had to be lifted out by

:05:31. > :05:38.crane. The operation was complicated because of the elevated

:05:38. > :05:43.track. A police spokeswoman said hundreds of passengers had been on

:05:43. > :05:47.board but it was too early to say what had caused the crash.

:05:47. > :05:50.Investigators will want to know how two chains, won a high-speed

:05:50. > :05:53.service and one in local service, were on the same track at the same

:05:53. > :05:57.time. The United Nations Security Council

:05:57. > :05:59.has voted to increase, to 300, the number of observers in Syria

:05:59. > :06:03.monitoring a ceasefire agreed between government and rebel forces.

:06:03. > :06:11.Today, the first small group of UN monitors entered the city of Homs

:06:11. > :06:14.which, before the ceasefire, had seen some of the fiercest fighting.

:06:14. > :06:17.There was shooting nearby as they were shown around the city,

:06:17. > :06:22.although the monitors themselves are not thought to have come under

:06:22. > :06:27.attack. Our Middle East correspondent Jim

:06:27. > :06:35.Muir is in Beirut. 300 more monitors. But exactly how much of a

:06:35. > :06:39.ceasefire is there on the ground in Syria, for them to monitor?

:06:40. > :06:48.As you can see there, they did have an effect in bringing down the

:06:48. > :06:55.level of violence in Homs, during that visit. But in other parts of

:06:55. > :07:02.the country, activists say more than 30 people were killed, in

:07:02. > :07:05.incidences, a lot in the far north, others in the south in Deraa. A few

:07:05. > :07:09.others scattered around, some shelling involved there. The

:07:09. > :07:15.presence of the observers on the ground does seem to make a

:07:15. > :07:19.difference. In Homs, the level of casualties was right down. They

:07:19. > :07:25.decided to leave two observers there permanently for that reason.

:07:25. > :07:31.Keeping tabs on everything is difficult. After they talked to

:07:31. > :07:36.people in Homs, in one of the worst quarters, apparently those people

:07:36. > :07:44.were beaten up and arrested for talking to the observers. Difficult

:07:44. > :07:50.to monitor that, plus, they have to monitor the other side as well.

:07:50. > :07:55.Government TV is showing bombs activists have killed people Web.

:07:55. > :07:59.So there are two asides to the story and the observers have to be

:07:59. > :08:02.across all of it. Gun salutes have taken place across

:08:02. > :08:05.the UK today, to celebrate the Queen's 86th birthday. At Edinburgh

:08:05. > :08:14.Castle, large crowds turned out to watch a 21-gun salute by 105

:08:14. > :08:18.Regiment Royal Artillery. The Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has

:08:18. > :08:21.shown signs of recovery, after waking from a coma. The 62 year old

:08:21. > :08:31.had contracted pneumonia in his battle against colon and liver

:08:31. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:41.cancer. Tributes have been paid to the

:08:41. > :08:44.Labour peer Jack Ashley, who's died after a short illness. He was 89. A

:08:44. > :08:47.life-long disability rights campaigner, Lord Ashley, who lost

:08:47. > :08:50.his hearing in his forties, had a long and successful career at

:08:50. > :08:53.Westminster. David Cameron said he'd made a major contribution to

:08:53. > :09:00.public life. While Ed Miliband said he'd be remembered with "deep

:09:00. > :09:03.affection". Carole Walker looks back on Lord Ashley's life.

:09:03. > :09:07.Lord Ashley commanded huge respect and affection across political

:09:07. > :09:09.lines. But he was not afraid of confrontation as he fought for the

:09:09. > :09:13.rights of the underprivileged and disabled.

:09:13. > :09:16.What is happening today is disabled people are expressing their great

:09:16. > :09:23.anger at the refusal of the government to give them proper

:09:23. > :09:26.legislative rights. He worked for the BBC in the 1960s. This is a

:09:26. > :09:31.documentary he made about life on the dole. Many unemployed people

:09:31. > :09:37.have told me queueing for the dole is humiliating. Is there any way

:09:37. > :09:40.you can... He went on to campaign for the disadvantaged in Parliament.

:09:40. > :09:44.Jack Ashley was MP for Stoke the 26 years, although he almost stood

:09:44. > :09:53.down when he lost his hearing in a routine operation two years after

:09:53. > :09:56.winning his seat. Normally, he used to sit in the front bench because,

:09:56. > :10:00.if he asked a question, the Prime Minister's answer would be typed

:10:00. > :10:09.out, and would be on a little screen. Colleagues remember a

:10:09. > :10:12.determined campaigner. His whole life was devoted to dealing with

:10:12. > :10:22.the problem that he faced, which was disability. He proved that if

:10:22. > :10:23.

:10:23. > :10:26.you really do work at it, and campaign, you can make progress.

:10:26. > :10:28.When Jack entered Parliament, there was no provision for disabled

:10:28. > :10:34.people on access to the built environment. There were no

:10:35. > :10:38.allowances. He leaves a much better legacy than was left to him.

:10:38. > :10:46.Lord Ashley will be remembered as the champion of the rights of

:10:46. > :10:52.disabled people, who changed laws and public attitudes.

:10:52. > :10:54.Sport now. And for a full round up of all the day's action, here's

:10:54. > :10:57.Katie Gornall at the BBC Sport Centre.

:10:57. > :11:00.Good evening. It was an eventful day for teams at

:11:00. > :11:04.the top and bottom of the Premier League, as the fight for survival

:11:04. > :11:08.and the race for the Champions League places took a few twists and

:11:08. > :11:12.turns. Match of the Day follows the news here on BBC One. If you don't

:11:12. > :11:18.want to know the scores, then now's the time to avert your eyes and

:11:18. > :11:20.Newcastle United are up to fourth in the table, after a convincing

:11:20. > :11:23.victory over Stoke. Spurs, meanwhile, dropped to fifth,

:11:23. > :11:26.after slipping up at Queen's Park Rangers. Rangers are now three

:11:26. > :11:29.points clear of the relegation zone. An impressive win for Blackburn

:11:29. > :11:33.wasn't enough to lift them out of the bottom three.

:11:33. > :11:36.But they climbed above Bolton, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Swansea.

:11:36. > :11:38.Meanwhile, Wigan's survival hopes suffered a setback, after a last

:11:38. > :11:40.minute defeat at Fulham. Elsewhere, the matches at Arsenal,

:11:40. > :11:44.and Aston Villa both finished goalless.

:11:44. > :11:47.In the Championship: Southampton missed the chance to seal promotion,

:11:47. > :11:51.and handed the title to Reading, as they lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough.

:11:51. > :11:53.At the other end of the table: The fate of Portsmouth was confirmed.

:11:53. > :11:55.They went down 2-1 against Derby, and were relegated.

:11:55. > :11:59.As were Coventry. They'll both join Doncaster in

:11:59. > :12:02.League One next season. To Scottish football now. Dundee

:12:02. > :12:05.United edged closer to Champions League football, after victory in

:12:05. > :12:08.the SPL over 10-man St Johnstone. Scott Robertson scored after 32

:12:08. > :12:11.minutes, and John Rankin got the second in stoppage time, as United

:12:11. > :12:17.leapfrogged their hosts to move within three points of third-placed

:12:17. > :12:19.Motherwell. Elsewhere, there were wins for

:12:19. > :12:27.Rangers and Aberdeen. But Dunfermline remain bottom, despite

:12:27. > :12:30.On Tuesday, Barcelona welcome Chelsea to Camp Nou for the return

:12:30. > :12:34.leg of their Champions League semi- final. But first, Pep Guardiola's

:12:34. > :12:37.side had the small matter of El Classico to deal with. Tonight,

:12:37. > :12:47.Barca hosted Real Madrid, knowing defeat would leave their rivals 7

:12:47. > :12:52.

:12:52. > :13:01.points clear at the top of La Liga. The greatest club much in the world.

:13:01. > :13:10.Chelsea's task was to spot the witnesses in Barcelona. But here,

:13:10. > :13:15.of Real Madrid went one up. Lionel Messi drove them for it. They had

:13:15. > :13:23.to keep battering at the door and eventually, scrappily, the ball

:13:23. > :13:26.went in. The game was equal for two minutes. Lionel Messi gets so many

:13:26. > :13:36.mentions, the achievements of Cristiano Ronaldo have been almost

:13:36. > :13:37.

:13:37. > :13:43.overlooked. Call number 54, the altar mat. -- goal number 54, the

:13:43. > :13:46.ultimate. So, Barcelona will play Chelsea. Stephen Hendry rolled back

:13:46. > :13:49.the years, to make a breath-taking start at the World Snooker

:13:49. > :13:52.Championships. The 43 year old produced a maximum 147 break in his

:13:53. > :13:55.first round match against Stuart Bingham at the Crucible. The seven-

:13:55. > :14:02.time champion, who's not won the tournament since 1999, leads

:14:02. > :14:05.Bingham by 7 frames to 1. In Rugby Union's Premiership:

:14:05. > :14:11.Harlequins and Leicester played out a classic at the Stoop. The Tigers

:14:11. > :14:14.recovered from a 13 points deficit, to beat the league leaders 43-33.

:14:14. > :14:19.Thomas Waldrom's second try of the game sealed the win, and saw

:14:19. > :14:23.Leicester leapfrog Saracens into second place.

:14:23. > :14:27.In tennis: Great Britain's women trail Sweden by two rubbers to nil,

:14:27. > :14:30.in their Fed Cup World Group two play-off. GB's number one, Elena

:14:30. > :14:34.Baltacha, lost in straight sets to Joanna Larsson. While Anne

:14:34. > :14:39.Keothavong lost to Sofia Arvidsson, once again in straight sets.

:14:39. > :14:42.That's all from the BBC Sport Centre.

:14:42. > :14:49.A reminder of the main news tonight. Violence continues in Bahrain,

:14:49. > :14:52.ahead of tomorrow's Grand Prix. A protester is killed and the British

:14:52. > :14:55.government urges restraint. You can see more on all of today's stories

:14:55. > :15:05.on the BBC News Channel. From me and the team here,

:15:05. > :15:10.

:15:10. > :15:15.Good evening. If you think you've seen a lot of rain over the last

:15:15. > :15:20.few days, think again, wait until next week, it could be better.

:15:20. > :15:26.There have been some heavy showers. They are fading away but some will

:15:26. > :15:31.linger in parts of northern England in particular. And some showers

:15:31. > :15:37.along the southern coastal areas. It could turn quite chilly, in some

:15:37. > :15:41.rural areas not far from freezing. There is a chance a few showers

:15:41. > :15:47.could move into London in the morning. But it should be a bright

:15:47. > :15:53.and cold start for the London Marathon. Difficult to pinpoint the

:15:53. > :15:57.detail but many of us will catch a shower and they could be heavy.

:15:57. > :16:03.Some bright weather across Scotland. Grey and damp over the east coast.

:16:03. > :16:09.A lot of showers for northern England into Eastern Counties.

:16:09. > :16:14.Temperatures up and down, 14 the best in the sunshine. Across the
