:00:23. > :00:26.Good afternoon. The chief executive of G4S says he
:00:26. > :00:31.only learnt his company wouldn't be able to provide thousands of
:00:31. > :00:34.security guards for the Olympics in the past nine days. Nick Buckles
:00:34. > :00:39.apologised and said his company would now make a loss of up to 50
:00:39. > :00:47.million on the contract. Thousands of troops are having to be drafted
:00:47. > :00:51.in to provide security for the Games. Richard Lister reports. It's
:00:51. > :00:55.the biggest security operation in Britain since the Second World War.
:00:55. > :01:00.From today, an air exclusion zone comes into force over London, but
:01:01. > :01:04.the problem is not in the air, but on ground. With I announcement that
:01:05. > :01:08.thousands more troops are to be needed to provide security at the
:01:08. > :01:14.Games has cast doubt on how well organised this aspect of the
:01:14. > :01:18.Olympics has been. G4S is to pay for redeploying the troops, as well
:01:18. > :01:22.as a multi-million pound penalty. The chief executive said that they
:01:22. > :01:27.underestimated the task. The security of the Olympics has
:01:27. > :01:34.been delivered by a large number of individual elements. We were a part
:01:34. > :01:41.of the mix. Clearly we cannot deliver on our side of that, we are
:01:41. > :01:45.very sorry about it. The problem came to light when G4S
:01:45. > :01:48.failed to provide its share of security personally for the
:01:48. > :01:53.Aquatics Centre, raising questions about why it has taken so long to
:01:53. > :01:57.find out about the situation. Last December organisers realised that
:01:57. > :02:04.they underestimated the number of guards that they needed and more
:02:04. > :02:10.than doubled the total to 23,700. G4S accepted a bigger contract it
:02:10. > :02:14.supply 10,000, the military agreed to provide 7,500. Now that G4S has
:02:14. > :02:20.admitted it cannot provide its share, the military's contribution
:02:20. > :02:25.has gone up to 11,000. There are questions about the G4S recruitment
:02:25. > :02:30.process. Applicants criticised it as chaotic, but with the deadline
:02:30. > :02:37.less than a fortnight away, all involved say that the primary focus
:02:37. > :02:42.is getting the right security in place.
:02:42. > :02:47.Did G4S go into denial about their achievements, whether they could
:02:47. > :02:52.deliver this? I hope that is subject to the rigorous
:02:52. > :02:59.parliamentary scrutiny, but now we have to focus on with less than two
:02:59. > :03:02.weeks to go to ensure that the Games are safe and secure.
:03:02. > :03:06.parliamentary Committees are summoning G4S, the organisers and
:03:06. > :03:11.two Government departments to account for what went wrong in the
:03:11. > :03:17.security process. The Government is to announce plans
:03:17. > :03:21.for the full elektri if Ication of the middleland mainline in
:03:21. > :03:27.Sheffield it is part of a multi- billion pound programme of
:03:27. > :03:31.investment to be set out next week. Let's go to Danny Savage. This is
:03:31. > :03:35.likely to go down well with the people where you are? It will be
:03:35. > :03:41.accepted well. We are 165 miles from the capital. The quickest
:03:41. > :03:45.train time from here to there is two hours and seven minutes. On
:03:45. > :03:50.Monday we are likely to here that the line will be elektriified. It
:03:50. > :03:55.will mean quicker transport links and newer trains. The diesel trains
:03:55. > :04:01.run the route now, the electric trains will take their place it
:04:01. > :04:07.will bring Sheffield, nam, Leicester, more into line with the
:04:07. > :04:13.towns and cities near them with the electricity run lines.
:04:13. > :04:20.It is not an unexpected announcement. It has been on an
:04:20. > :04:23.industry wish-list. It will cost about 500 mill. -- million. The
:04:23. > :04:29.Government will pay some of the money and Network Rail will pay
:04:29. > :04:35.some as well. There was concern that fare pairs will have to pay
:04:35. > :04:40.some of this. Fares will go up to above inflation. That is a downside,
:04:40. > :04:50.but overall this has been welcomed in Sheffield and in other towns and
:04:50. > :04:56.
:04:56. > :05:02.cities on this route down the spine of England.
:05:02. > :05:06.UN observers are on their way to a Syrian village which antiGovernment
:05:06. > :05:11.activists say was the scene of a massacre on Thursday. Some reports
:05:11. > :05:16.claim that 200 people were killed when troops attacked the town of
:05:17. > :05:22.Tremseh. It is said that the deaths were caused by armed terrorist
:05:22. > :05:26.groups. You may find some of the images in this report disturbing.
:05:26. > :05:29.Off to try to find out what happened at Tremseh. The UN
:05:29. > :05:32.monitors did a reconassiance yesterday and established that the
:05:32. > :05:37.weighs is calm. Now they are set to investigate the reports that a
:05:37. > :05:42.massacre took place. So far, though, activists have not
:05:42. > :05:48.produced the horrifying images of slaughtered children and women that
:05:48. > :05:53.circulated after the Pula massacre two months ago. These pictures show
:05:53. > :05:57.the bodies of about 15 dead young men of fighting age. Initial
:05:57. > :06:03.reports spoke of over 200 people massacred, but they have not been
:06:03. > :06:07.named or documented by video. Syrian state TV says that the
:06:07. > :06:12.security forces killed many armed rebels in Tremseh and destroyed
:06:12. > :06:17.their stronghold there is. Whatever happened in Tremseh, the
:06:17. > :06:22.incident has put the Syrian regime under mounting pressure. The US
:06:22. > :06:28.Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, talked about deliberate murder. The
:06:28. > :06:33.UN Special Envoy, Lisa Nandy, described the violence as an
:06:33. > :06:37.outrageous violation of his peace plan and Ban Ki-Moon said it cast
:06:37. > :06:41.serious doubts on Bashar al-Assad's commitment to peace.
:06:41. > :06:43.The reports of a massacre at Tremseh have clearly further heated
:06:43. > :06:50.the international debate, but distracted attention from the
