:00:10. > :00:14.An apology from the company that has failed to recruit hundreds of

:00:14. > :00:19.security staff for the Olympics, G4S says it will pay the cost of

:00:19. > :00:23.drafting in more troops to help keep the Games safe.

:00:23. > :00:27.The London to Sheffield railway lines set for half-a- million

:00:27. > :00:37.pounds upgrade. And from Chelsea to China, one of the world's best

:00:37. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:54.Good evening. The chief executive of the security firm G4S has said

:00:54. > :00:57.he is sorry, disappointed and embarrassed that it has failed to

:00:57. > :01:00.recruit enough security guards of an index. Nick Buckles said the

:01:00. > :01:04.company would meet the cost of the deployment of extra military

:01:04. > :01:07.personnel to replace them. He said he only found out about the

:01:07. > :01:12.recruitment problems just eight or nine days ago. Richard Lister

:01:12. > :01:16.reports. Olympic security was not supposed

:01:16. > :01:20.to look like this. Just months ago, G4S was confident it could deliver

:01:20. > :01:23.the civilian staff needed for security checks at the venues, but

:01:23. > :01:30.now thousands more military personnel are being brought in,

:01:30. > :01:37.Angie 4 S faces a loss of tens of millions of pounds. -- Angie 4 S.

:01:37. > :01:40.Its chief executive said that they underestimate the task. The live

:01:40. > :01:46.security was always going to be delivered by a large number of

:01:46. > :01:50.elements. -- Olympic. We are embarrassed and the sorry about it.

:01:50. > :01:54.This is a problem that has been years in the making. When work

:01:54. > :01:59.started on the Olympic Stadium, the plan was for just 10,000 security

:01:59. > :02:03.staff. In 2010, the incoming coalition government commissioned a

:02:03. > :02:06.review of the figure, but it was not until last December that it

:02:06. > :02:10.decided to more than double the number of security staff. The

:02:10. > :02:19.military were asked to supply more than 13,000 personnel, with the

:02:19. > :02:23.Now the MoD has been asked to commit more personnel to make up

:02:23. > :02:28.the G4S shortfall, it means that around 17,000 servicemen and women

:02:28. > :02:32.will be working at the Olympics, far more than a serving in

:02:32. > :02:37.Afghanistan. G4S is still time to provide as many security guards as

:02:37. > :02:40.it can, but some applicants have criticised the process as chaotic.

:02:40. > :02:44.Those involved in the Games say the primary focus now must be on

:02:44. > :02:48.getting the right security in place, although they are important

:02:48. > :02:53.questions to be answered. Did G4S go into denial about their

:02:53. > :02:58.inability to deliver this? What was the other side from the Home

:02:58. > :03:01.Office? Where did that fail? I hope the process will be subject to the

:03:01. > :03:06.most rigorous parliamentary scrutiny once the Games are over,

:03:06. > :03:11.but now we have got to focus, with less than two weeks ago, are making

:03:11. > :03:18.sure the games are safe and secured. The first of the live athletes are

:03:18. > :03:28.due to arrive within days, but behind the scenes two parliamentary

:03:28. > :03:31.committees are planning to find out United Nations observers in Syria

:03:31. > :03:35.have entered a village where massacres are reportedly took place

:03:35. > :03:39.on Thursday. Opposition activists claim that government forces killed

:03:39. > :03:42.200 people including civilians entrance saved. The Syrian

:03:42. > :03:48.government said it carried out a military operation against rebel

:03:48. > :03:51.fighters, he would describe as at terrorists. -- in Tremseh.

:03:51. > :03:54.A memorial service has been held for nine climbers who were caught

:03:55. > :03:59.in an avalanche on Thursday. Candles were lit for each of the

:03:59. > :04:04.victims, among them three British climbers, Steve Barber, John Taylor

:04:04. > :04:08.and Roger Payne. The main rail line from London to

:04:08. > :04:12.Sheffield is to be upgraded as part of a 9 billion programme of

:04:12. > :04:14.government investment. Business leaders have welcomed the plan to

:04:14. > :04:22.electrify the Midland Mainline route, which they say will protect

:04:22. > :04:25.hundreds of jobs. From Sheffield, Danny Savage reports.

:04:25. > :04:30.Monday's announcement on upgrading the railways is thought to be the

:04:30. > :04:38.biggest investment in train travel for generations. Overall, it could

:04:38. > :04:42.be worth 9 billion. Here in Sheffield, the fastest service to

:04:42. > :04:47.the capital takes two hours seven minutes at the moment, a lot longer

:04:47. > :04:52.than the links to other northern towns and cities, but in a few

:04:52. > :04:56.years' time these diesels will be replaced with electric trains, more

:04:56. > :05:00.environmentally friendly rolling stock bringing faster services. The

:05:00. > :05:05.electrification of this, the Midland Mainline, has been called

:05:05. > :05:09.for by businesses and politicians for years. What we are going to do

:05:09. > :05:12.is attract investors to come up north, see what we have got to

:05:12. > :05:17.offer and make the necessary investment to make our economies

:05:17. > :05:20.grow. The cost of electrifying the line is set to be about 500

:05:20. > :05:25.million. Some of the money will come from the taxpayer and some

:05:25. > :05:30.from Network Rail borrowing the cash. But there are also concerns

:05:30. > :05:38.from some politicians and rail users that fares will have to rise,

:05:38. > :05:42.too, rises which would be well But Monday's announcement is not

:05:42. > :05:51.just about the Midland Mainline. It is about other routes, too. It

:05:51. > :05:55.could create jobs in places such as the Bombardier plant in Derby.

:05:55. > :05:59.Well, speed limits on many rural roads in England could be cut from

:05:59. > :06:04.60 mph down to 40 under government proposals aimed at improving road

:06:04. > :06:08.safety. Figures from the Department of Transport show that in 2010 more

:06:08. > :06:12.than two-thirds of road deaths in the UK were on rural roads. Under

:06:12. > :06:16.the proposals, local authorities would also have greater freedom to

:06:16. > :06:19.introduce 20 mph limits in urban areas.

:06:19. > :06:23.The latest bad weather has caused more flooding and destruction

:06:23. > :06:26.across parts of England. In Shropshire, emergency workers had

:06:26. > :06:31.to rescue an 81-year-old who had become trapped in her home

:06:31. > :06:36.overnight by rising floodwaters. In Caxton in Cambridgeshire, drivers

:06:36. > :06:39.abandoned their cars after roads became impassable.

:06:39. > :06:43.Hundreds of football fans have turned out in Shanghai to work in

:06:43. > :06:49.the former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who has signed for the club

:06:49. > :06:58.Shanghai Shenhua on a reported salary of 200,000 per week. John

:06:58. > :07:02.Sudworth was there. His report It is a long way from Chelsea to

:07:02. > :07:06.China, not least in terms of the standard of football, but Didier

:07:06. > :07:14.Drogba's arrival this morning proves one thing, ambition and

:07:14. > :07:20.For a striker at the very top of his game, it may seem like an

:07:20. > :07:27.extraordinary move. His new club would struggle to beat a lower

:07:27. > :07:32.division side on-and-off day, let alone Chelsea, for whom Drogba won

:07:32. > :07:36.the Champions League trophy with the final kick of the game. And yet

:07:36. > :07:42.Shanghai have reportedly doubled his salary. Just between you, me

:07:43. > :07:49.and the BBC, are you really being paid 200,000 per week? Between me

:07:49. > :07:53.and you and the BBC, really, I did not come here with the idea of

:07:53. > :07:56.making our lot of money. I came here because it is a completely

:07:56. > :07:59.different challenge from what I have seen in Europe. Chinese

:07:59. > :08:04.football is notoriously corrupt, but it is trying to clean up its

:08:04. > :08:08.act with dozens of officials, referees and players convicted of

:08:08. > :08:13.match-fixing in the past few months. Shanghai has high hopes for Didier

:08:13. > :08:17.Drogba. Its football team is currently languishing close to the

:08:17. > :08:20.bottom of the league. But some fans will fear that all the money in
