:00:18. > :00:21.Good afternoon. Bradley Wiggins is set to secure a place among

:00:21. > :00:24.Britain's sporting greats today, as he prepares to become the first

:00:24. > :00:27.British winner of the Tour de France in its 109-year history.

:00:27. > :00:29.Only an accident can prevent Wiggins clinching the title in

:00:29. > :00:36.Paris this afternoon, where there is a tradition the race leader

:00:36. > :00:45.isn't challenged on the final day. Live now to Paris, and our

:00:46. > :00:50.correspondent Tim Franks. Thank you very much. As you can

:00:50. > :00:54.probably see behind me, the great mass of fans who are coming to

:00:54. > :01:01.salute Bradley Wiggins and the rest of the Tour the France riders have

:01:01. > :01:05.already started coming. They are clad in their lycra, their T-shirts,

:01:05. > :01:12.proclaiming Bradley Wiggins, many of them. It is a remarkable story.

:01:12. > :01:19.Yesterday, we saw him cement his position by taking the time trial,

:01:19. > :01:24.by post as -- by posting the fastest time of the day. That is

:01:24. > :01:28.his speciality. But he has proved himself to be a rider of iron will

:01:28. > :01:33.all the way through the Tour de France this year. It is the world's

:01:33. > :01:37.toughest endurance test. Sport tends to lend itself to hyperbole,

:01:37. > :01:41.talking about greats and history and so forth, but this really will

:01:41. > :01:48.be one of the major sporting achievements by any British

:01:48. > :01:52.sportsmen ever. What is even more extraordinary is that it is not

:01:52. > :01:58.just going to be one British man on the podium for the first time in

:01:58. > :02:02.109 years, it is going to be two. Teammate Chris Froome will also be

:02:02. > :02:07.on the podium. There is also the prospect, potentially, of Mark

:02:07. > :02:11.Cavendish taking the sprint stage victory here, to take him to fourth

:02:11. > :02:18.in the all-time list. So, a remarkable list of achievements for

:02:18. > :02:21.The Syrian army has launched a new attack on a northern district of

:02:21. > :02:23.the capital, Damascus. Activists and people living in Barzeh say

:02:23. > :02:26.helicopters are being used. Troops have also been deployed in other

:02:26. > :02:29.areas of Damsascus. Fighting has also continued in Syria's second

:02:29. > :02:34.city, Aleppo, which until a week ago had been relatively unaffected

:02:34. > :02:38.President Obama is to visit Colorado today, to meet relatives

:02:38. > :02:42.of some of the victims of the mass shooting at a cinema in the town of

:02:42. > :02:45.Aurora. The 12 people who died included a six-year-old girl. The

:02:45. > :02:49.apartment of the man believed to have carried out the attack has now

:02:49. > :02:52.been cleared of booby traps. The people of Norway are

:02:52. > :02:56.commemorating the day, exactly a year ago, when Anders Behring

:02:56. > :03:00.Breivik killed 77 people. Many of the victims were teenagers who were

:03:00. > :03:10.attending a summer camp on the island of Utoya. Richard Galpin

:03:10. > :03:15.

:03:15. > :03:25.This day of remembrance began with a solemn ceremony in the centre of

:03:25. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:31.Oslo. The Prime Minister and the King laid wreaths in memory of the

:03:31. > :03:38.eight people who died here in the car bomb which targeted the

:03:38. > :03:48.Government's headquarters. Then, a drum roll to mark a minute of

:03:48. > :03:49.

:03:49. > :03:56.silence. TRANSLATION: Breivik took many

:03:56. > :04:01.lives with the aim of changing this country, but Norway united - he

:04:01. > :04:06.lost, we won. The country's leaders went on to attend a memorial

:04:06. > :04:11.service here in Oslo cathedral. This was one of many services held

:04:11. > :04:21.across the country. It was a chance for everyone to reflect on the

:04:21. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:26.enormity of what happened a year ago. The car bomb in Oslo was

:04:26. > :04:32.designed to kill the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet, but it

:04:32. > :04:36.failed - they were not in their offices. Breivik went on to carry

:04:36. > :04:46.out a second attack on the island of Utoya, where hundreds of young

:04:46. > :04:53.people were at a summer camp. 67 were shot dead. Two others drowned.

:04:53. > :04:57.Now, a year later, the trauma still hangs heavy over the population.
