:00:07. > :00:11.The first full day of competition gets underway here at the Olympic

:00:11. > :00:14.Park in London and around the UK. Tens of thousands of people gather

:00:14. > :00:17.in the streets to cheer on the cyclists in the men's road race.

:00:17. > :00:23.But the first disappointment for Team GB and Mark Cavendish who

:00:23. > :00:28.misses out on a medal. After complaints about empty seats

:00:28. > :00:33.at some venues, the Olympic organisers promise to investigate.

:00:33. > :00:36.Good evening Mr Bond. Good evening, Your Majesty.

:00:36. > :00:39.On Her Majesty's Secret Service, we hear from the man in charge of last

:00:39. > :00:42.night's ceremony, Danny Boyle, on what it was like directing the

:00:42. > :00:47.Queen. We'll be assessing the first full

:00:47. > :00:50.day of the games. In today's other news:

:00:50. > :00:55.The Syrian city of Aleppo has come under heavy bombardment in what

:00:55. > :00:59.rebels say is the start of an army assault to force them out.

:00:59. > :01:09.And families are forced to flee the city as activists claim over 30

:01:09. > :01:21.

:01:21. > :01:24.people have been killed in today's Good evening and welcome to the BBC

:01:24. > :01:28.News from the Olympic Park where tens of thousands of fans have been

:01:28. > :01:31.turning up for the first full day of the Games. Twelve gold medals

:01:31. > :01:34.have already been handed out, but Britain's hopes of an early medal

:01:34. > :01:39.in the men's cycling road race were dashed this afternoon when Mark

:01:39. > :01:44.Cavendish failed to finish in the top three. Our Sports Editor, David

:01:44. > :01:49.Bond, has the story. The Mall has seen plenty of national pageants,

:01:49. > :01:53.but nothing quite like this. After last night's opening ceremony, the

:01:53. > :01:57.party moved to the heart of London. With thousands lining the streets,

:01:57. > :02:03.it was time to see if Team GB's athletes could live up to

:02:03. > :02:06.expectations. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:02:06. > :02:11.British cycling is the driving force behind the country's Olympic

:02:11. > :02:14.ambitions. This dream team, still fresh from Bradley Wiggins tour

:02:14. > :02:17.Tour de France victory had Olympic gold in their sights. Wiggins was

:02:17. > :02:22.getting all the attention, but today was all about whether Mark

:02:22. > :02:26.Cavendish could give the VIPs gathered on the starting line the

:02:26. > :02:29.perfect launchpad for the London Games.

:02:29. > :02:33.Organisers had promised to use the city's iconic landmarks as a

:02:33. > :02:37.backdrop for the sport, but as the field streamed past Buckingham

:02:37. > :02:45.Palace, the question was, would Cavendish and his killer sprint

:02:45. > :02:52.finish still be in contention when the race returned six hours and and

:02:52. > :02:55.156 miles later? The answer was no. And while leafy Surrey might look

:02:56. > :03:03.pretty, nine laps of brutal Box Hill soon took their toll on

:03:03. > :03:07.Britain's riders. Faced with a break away group, Tour de France

:03:07. > :03:11.runner-up, Chris Froome tried to give chase, but fell away. Even

:03:11. > :03:15.Wiggins couldn't keep up the pace. And as the leaders hit the home

:03:15. > :03:24.straight, Cavendish and his team- mates were nowhere to be seen.

:03:24. > :03:28.Instead, the gold medal went to Kazakhstan.

:03:28. > :03:32.This wasn't the opening that Team GB wanted. Mark Cavendish and the

:03:32. > :03:38.cycling team were supposed to kick start an Olympic gold rush.

:03:38. > :03:46.It is a hard day today. I think, yeah, it is a shame we couldn't

:03:46. > :03:49.hold it together for Mark. But that's bike racing.

:03:49. > :03:54.Britain's cyclists are programmed for victory. So it is easy to

:03:54. > :04:00.understand why Cavendish was so upset in the face of defeat.

:04:00. > :04:05.I have four of the strongest guys who were controlling all day. I am

:04:05. > :04:13.so, so proud of them. It is just a shame we couldn't finish it off.

:04:13. > :04:17.Was Tour de France tiredness a factor? Stop asking stupid

:04:17. > :04:20.questions. Do you know about cycling? Such was the expectation

:04:20. > :04:30.on Team GB that difficult questions will continue to be asked if the

:04:30. > :04:32.

:04:32. > :04:34.Team GB's hopes were also dashed in the pool. Swimmer Hannah Miley came

:04:34. > :04:41.fifth in the women's 400 metre individual medley just a couple of

:04:41. > :04:44.hours ago. Meanwhile, in the men's race America's Michael Phelps

:04:44. > :04:48.failed to win his 17th Olympic medal as fellow countryman Ryan

:04:48. > :04:52.Reports on the action from the pool. The First Lady was was pool side to

:04:52. > :04:58.see a showdown between two Americans vying to be the number

:04:58. > :05:02.one man of international swimming. The maestro. The greatest swimmer

:05:02. > :05:07.in history. He has 14 Olympic medals. MP. Michael Phelps champion

:05:07. > :05:11.of this event in Athens and Beijing. The challenger, Ryan Lochte, the

:05:11. > :05:17.world champion. But here he was now in lane eight

:05:17. > :05:22.at the bottom of the screen, struggling to maintain that aura of

:05:22. > :05:26.invincibility. He was always trailing Ryan Lochte in lane three.

:05:26. > :05:31.As the race wore on, Michael Phelps was no longer contesting victory,

:05:31. > :05:35.just a medal of any colour was looking beyond him. The winner was

:05:35. > :05:40.clear. Gold for Ryan Lochte. Nothing for Michael Phelps back in

:05:40. > :05:44.fourth. Ryan Lochte has shown that Michael

:05:44. > :05:48.Phelps' days of domination in the Olympic pool are over. In Beijing

:05:48. > :05:53.Michael Phelps was unbeatable and in London, he lost in his first

:05:53. > :05:57.event. The British supporters had come in

:05:58. > :06:03.large numbers hoping that Hannah Miley could win that first Team GB

:06:03. > :06:08.medal, but she found herself in a race won in a new world record time.

:06:08. > :06:13.COMMENTATOR: Extraordinary. Hannah Miley finished fifth.

:06:13. > :06:16.I am gutted I didn't get a medal. I can't have given it anything more.

:06:16. > :06:19.That was everything I had. I will be able to sit down and look over

:06:19. > :06:24.it and it is one place better than what I did in Beijing.

:06:24. > :06:29.Tomorrow, it is a turn of this woman, Rebecca Adlington who won

:06:29. > :06:37.two golds in Beijing will try to hold on to her 400 meters freestyle

:06:37. > :06:41.Many of the key Olympic venues sprang into action for the first

:06:41. > :06:47.time today, but there was concern among many fans about the number of

:06:47. > :06:50.empty seats at some events. The Olympic organisers, LOCOG, have

:06:50. > :06:54.promised to investigate. Our Sports Andy Swiss, reports. The first

:06:54. > :07:04.golden moment of the London Olympics.

:07:04. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :07:16.At Woolwich Barracks at 11.20am, China's athlete won in the air

:07:16. > :07:21.rifle. Including Britain's much touted rowers. The pick. Pick of

:07:21. > :07:27.the bunch these two. Inspired it seems, by the number of fans.

:07:27. > :07:32.Nothing can prepare us from the word go to the beep at the finish,

:07:32. > :07:37.just the support. It was brilliant. Not everyone got such support.

:07:37. > :07:42.There were swathes of empty seats at swimming heats and many more at

:07:42. > :07:48.other venues too, at Horse Guards Parade on the first day of the

:07:48. > :07:51.beach volleyball and at the gymnastics. After many fans were

:07:51. > :07:54.disappointed in the ticketing ballot, organisers say they are

:07:54. > :07:59.looking into the situation. LOCOG are doing a full

:07:59. > :08:01.investigation into what happened. We think it was accredited seats

:08:01. > :08:07.that belonged to sponsors, but if they are not going to turn up, we

:08:07. > :08:11.want those tickets to be avoilable for members of the -- available for

:08:11. > :08:18.members of the public. Those who did watch the gymnastics

:08:18. > :08:22.saw something special, inspired by Lewis Smith, the British men

:08:22. > :08:26.qualified for their first Olympic final in 88 years.

:08:26. > :08:32.Else why joy for the hosts was mingled with disappointment. At

:08:32. > :08:37.lost in the first round of the men's doubles.

:08:37. > :08:43.At Cardiff, the women's football team qualified for the quarter-

:08:43. > :08:47.finals by beating Cameroon. Some success then, not just quite enough

:08:47. > :08:51.supporters. After the first day, the medals

:08:51. > :08:56.table looks like this. China leads with four golds. Two in the pool.

:08:56. > :09:03.They are followed by Italy. And the United States are third with that

:09:03. > :09:08.gold gold for Ryan Lochte in the men's 400 meter individual medley.

:09:08. > :09:12.Our Sports Editor, David Bond, is at Olympic Park for us now. David,

:09:12. > :09:17.what's your assessment of the first day's of competition? Fiona, after

:09:17. > :09:24.that spectacular opening ceremony from Danny Boyle last night which

:09:24. > :09:28.everyone's seems to have reflected was a success and triumphth, today

:09:28. > :09:31.was about getting off to the right start with the sport and all eyes

:09:31. > :09:37.turned to the mall and to Mark Cavendish and the cycling road race

:09:37. > :09:40.and I was down there and you couldn't help but feel the air of

:09:40. > :09:44.sort of dejection and disappointment from everyone who

:09:44. > :09:48.had come down to see what was hopefully going to be the first

:09:48. > :09:53.British gold medal and to underline the level of expectation from

:09:53. > :09:59.everyone down there, you know, the Prime Minister Prime Minister,

:09:59. > :10:02.David Cameron, was there as was Boris Johnson, Sebastian Coe and

:10:02. > :10:06.Prince Charles, they turned out to see that triumphant moment and the

:10:06. > :10:09.minute it didn't deliver, you know, actually it became very, very

:10:09. > :10:13.disappointing. Now, of course, looking further ahead, there are

:10:13. > :10:17.clearly more opportunities this weekend, but I've said before, that

:10:17. > :10:20.this weekend was all about building momentum with the sport and getting

:10:20. > :10:23.off to the right start and if Britain don't manage to come up

:10:23. > :10:27.with the gold tomorrow then some more difficult questions will be

:10:27. > :10:30.asked. Many people are unhappy about the

:10:30. > :10:36.number of empty seats at some of the venues? Well, that's right. If

:10:36. > :10:38.you look at the way the ticketing has been handled by the London

:10:38. > :10:40.organising committee, it is easy to understand why people are looking

:10:40. > :10:44.at the empty seats on the television and thinking, "This

:10:44. > :10:51.can't be right." LOCOG promised an investigation. It does look like

:10:51. > :10:55.the seats were accredited areas which means about 5% of the total

:10:55. > :10:59.8.8 million tickets which were available, but clearly, they will

:10:59. > :11:02.be keen to try and make sure that some of the kicts, if they are not

:11:02. > :11:08.-- tickets, if they are not not being used make their way to the

:11:08. > :11:11.public. Our other main story tonight and in

:11:11. > :11:15.Syria the city of Aleppo has come under heavy bombardment in what

:11:15. > :11:17.rebels say is the start of an army assault to force them out. Over 30

:11:17. > :11:19.people have been killed in the fighting today according to

:11:19. > :11:29.activists. A steady stream of vehicles carrying families is

:11:29. > :11:31.

:11:31. > :11:37.leaving the city as Mike Wooldridge Parts of Syria's city are at war

:11:37. > :11:41.now. We saw delashes in one air -- clashes in one area and running

:11:41. > :11:46.battles were fought as Government troops tried to force the rebels

:11:46. > :11:56.out. This footage can't be independently verified, but one

:11:56. > :12:00.reporter in the area said that the battle rage all day, describing it

:12:00. > :12:04.as "hell. There were fighting and casualties in a number of areas.

:12:05. > :12:09.Many are believed to have been wounded. Others killed. Rebels,

:12:09. > :12:13.civilians and Government troops. This video filmed by the rebels,

:12:13. > :12:18.appears to show the aftermath of an attack on an army convoy, with a

:12:18. > :12:23.number of soldiers killed. And a military vehicle destroyed.

:12:23. > :12:28.Again, it can't be verified, but both sides are locked in a fight to

:12:28. > :12:32.the death for control of this vital city.

:12:32. > :12:41.Syrian troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships have been

:12:41. > :12:44.massing for days. But on Saturday, they made their move. Targeting

:12:44. > :12:50.districts the rebels had taken over. Fighter planes flew low across

:12:50. > :12:55.parts of Aleppo. Many appeared to be equipped for an attack. As the

:12:55. > :13:05.Syrian president uses his might to regain control. The worst fighting

:13:05. > :13:08.

:13:08. > :13:15.seems to have been in this area. There were pitched battles and

:13:15. > :13:19.casualties along with rebel strongholds elsewhere in in what is

:13:19. > :13:23.Syria's largest city. This is just the start of an offensive which

:13:23. > :13:33.could last weeks. The only thing that is guaranteed is there will be

:13:33. > :13:38.

:13:38. > :13:40.more violence and more people will The Coronation Street actor

:13:40. > :13:43.Geoffrey Hughes has died after suffering from prostate cancer. The

:13:43. > :13:47.68-year-old played Eddie Yeats in the ITV soap and was also known for

:13:47. > :13:50.his roles as Twiggy in the Royle Family and Onslow in Keeping Up

:13:50. > :13:55.Appearances. The actor's family said he died "peacefully in his

:13:55. > :13:57.sleep" last night. Back to our main story and today's Olympic sporting

:13:57. > :14:01.action followed last night's dramatic opening ceremony which was

:14:01. > :14:05.watched by 27 million people in the UK alone and many more worldwide.

:14:05. > :14:08.For many the highlight was the unexpected role played by the Queen.

:14:08. > :14:15.The man who devised last night's ceremony, Danny Boyle, has been

:14:15. > :14:20.talking about what it was like to direct her majesty. Jon Kay reports.

:14:20. > :14:24.Still dancing the morning after, but for the cast it was time to say

:14:24. > :14:28.goodbye and take home their ceremony souvenirs. And you are

:14:28. > :14:35.going to have that forever? I am. I'm thinking I might turn it over

:14:35. > :14:42.and plant a tree in it. This performer was keeping fake

:14:42. > :14:47.grass from the English countryside scene. I will never get this again.

:14:47. > :14:50.We have a patch this size that needs filling. What in the garden?

:14:50. > :14:55.Yes. The grass may have gone already,

:14:55. > :15:05.but the flame still burns. It will now have to be moved though so the

:15:05. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:21.athletics can start. It was a very British night.

:15:21. > :15:30.A frenetic journey through our social history and popular culture.

:15:30. > :15:35.But in a show full of surprises, there was one stand out shock.

:15:35. > :15:41.Good evening, Mr Bond. Good evening, Your Majesty.

:15:41. > :15:45.On Her Majesty's very Secret Service. Filmed behind Palace doors

:15:45. > :15:49.four months ago. She is a good actor. She is good at it. She is

:15:49. > :15:56.good at it and her and Daniel got on very well. Her and James Bond

:15:56. > :16:01.got on very well. That was all tickety boo.

:16:01. > :16:05.Today this most unlikely of Bond girls was touring the Olympic Park

:16:05. > :16:14.and getting rave reviews for her acting. You were brilliant.

:16:14. > :16:19.It wasn't a celebrity who lit the cauldron.

:16:19. > :16:26.But seven promising young British athletes. Today, we showed two of

:16:26. > :16:35.them their big moment for the first time.

:16:35. > :16:40.When we lit it, I was just like "we done that. This is us. It is going

:16:40. > :16:46.up because of us. "I don't think it was until we lit it that we

:16:46. > :16:51.realised what we were doing. I was like "don't get this wrong." At

:16:51. > :16:57.that moment we lit it, it was like "wow, we did that.". So much

:16:57. > :17:02.emotion went into that. Well 24 hours and one billion

:17:02. > :17:08.television viewers later, the international verdict is in and

:17:08. > :17:12.most reviewers liked the opening ceremony, praising its energy and

:17:12. > :17:21.its British eccentricity even if some foreign critics admitted at

:17:21. > :17:24.times they were a little bit Well, that's all from me. The
