:02:11. > :02:19.London has provided the stage for some of the most thrilling theatre

:08:43. > :08:47.one of the Olympics most gruelling events. It is slightly poignant.

:08:47. > :08:56.After 16 days and countless memories, they are competing for

:08:56. > :08:59.the very last gold of London 2012. It was decided at 6:10pm, a gold

:08:59. > :09:07.for of Lisa Mac -- Laura Asadauskaite and Samantha Murray

:09:07. > :09:11.the silver. So, our final look at the Olympic medal table. Team GB

:09:11. > :09:19.secured third place, with their tally of 29 gold medals. USA took

:09:19. > :09:29.the top slot with 46, ahead of China's 38 golds. Our sports editor

:09:29. > :09:30.

:09:30. > :09:35.is at the Olympic Park now. In so many ways it has been quite a

:09:35. > :09:40.fortnight. The stunning and fitting finale to the Games tonight. The

:09:40. > :09:45.IOC president, in his closing address of the Games, said they had

:09:45. > :09:52.been a happy and glorious Olympics - perhaps perfectly reflecting the

:09:52. > :09:58.mood that London was always trying to create. Comparisons between

:09:58. > :10:03.pasts - has never passed hosts are extremely difficult. I have been to

:10:03. > :10:08.four games and they have been the best publicly supported. Sydney

:10:08. > :10:14.comes closest. One seasoned observer I spoke to today's said

:10:14. > :10:19.these were easily the best. Why? Because of the huge success of Team

:10:19. > :10:25.GB, finishing third in the medals table, at their best performance

:10:25. > :10:32.for over 100 years. Also because of those big international moments -

:10:32. > :10:36.Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and David Rudisha. Mainly because of

:10:36. > :10:41.the organisation. London really fretted about putting a Games on

:10:41. > :10:46.and worried that transport and security. Everything ran smoothly.

:10:46. > :10:50.I remember Beijing, on the closing date of the Olympics, London

:10:50. > :10:57.worrying how they would follow be Games. They could not follow it in

:10:57. > :11:07.many ways. I think they have gone won a stage further. They have put

:11:07. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:10.fun and sport back at the heart of the Olympics. -- won a stage

:11:10. > :11:14.further. Detectives investigating the death of 12-year-old Tia Sharp

:11:14. > :11:16.have charged her grandmother's partner, Stuart Hazell, with murder.

:11:16. > :11:26.Christine Sharp, who was also detained on suspicion of murder,

:11:26. > :11:26.

:11:26. > :11:31.has been released on bail. This report from Sophie Hutchinson. This

:11:47. > :11:52.happened. I wish I was there to protect you. Her mother was

:11:52. > :11:57.devastated by events in the past week. Shortly afterwards her

:11:57. > :12:04.grandfather and father also came to remember her. They said they were

:12:04. > :12:08.heartbroken. 12-year-old Tia Sharp went missing 10 days ago. She had

:12:08. > :12:14.visited her grand mother's house in London where police discovered the

:12:14. > :12:19.body. In an early hours of this morning, police charged her

:12:19. > :12:24.grandmother a past of his boyfriend, Stuart Hazell, with her murder. --

:12:24. > :12:30.grand mother's boyfriend. Christine Sharp was also arrested on

:12:30. > :12:37.suspicion of murder. She has been released on bail, along with a 39-

:12:37. > :12:42.year-old man, who has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an

:12:42. > :12:47.offender. Tomorrow, Stuart Hazell will appear at a magistrates' court,

:12:47. > :12:53.charged with the murder of Tia Sharp. During the day, people came

:12:53. > :12:59.to local churches to sign books of condolence. You cannot really get

:12:59. > :13:06.your head around what could have happened. It is such a tragedy.

:13:06. > :13:12.This community, many of whom helped to search for Tia are stunned and

:13:12. > :13:16.angry about what has happened. At least 250 people are reported to

:13:16. > :13:20.have been killed by two earthquakes in Iran. Up to 2,000 others were

:13:20. > :13:30.injured. Villages around the north western city of Tabriz were hit by

:13:30. > :13:33.

:13:33. > :13:38.The two earthquakes had struck 11 minutes apart. Scores of villages

:13:38. > :13:44.were damaged. Some are said to have been flattened completely. Hundreds

:13:44. > :13:49.of people have been injured. Many casualties were in rural areas,

:13:49. > :13:54.where homes were destroyed. The Red Crescent is providing shelter for

:13:54. > :13:59.those left homeless or too afraid to return indoors. It has

:13:59. > :14:05.dispatched thousands of tents, blankets and tons of food. About

:14:05. > :14:10.16,000 people have been helped so far. President Ahmadinejad has

:14:10. > :14:14.ordered reconstruction to begin immediately, before the onset of

:14:14. > :14:19.winter. Iranian officials say search and rescue operations are

:14:19. > :14:24.ending. Most people have been accounted for and the priority now

:14:24. > :14:27.is to get help to the survivors. There have been dozens of

:14:27. > :14:32.aftershocks but the Iranian authorities know what to expect.

:14:32. > :14:41.The country lies on a major geological fault-line and many

:14:41. > :14:43.people are heeding the advice to In Egypt, President Mohamed Morsi

:14:43. > :14:46.has effectively sacked the head of the armed forces, Field Marshal

:14:46. > :14:49.Hussein Tantawi. Relations between the Army and President Morsi's

:14:49. > :14:53.Muslim Brotherhood have been tense since the fall of President Mubarak

:14:53. > :14:55.last year, and this will be seen by Egyptians as a decisive move in the

:14:55. > :14:59.power struggle. British sporting success hasn't

:14:59. > :15:03.been confined to the Olympics. In the last hour, the golfer Rory

:15:03. > :15:09.McIlroy has won the US PGA Championship. He took the final

:15:09. > :15:15.major of the year at Kiawah Island, in South Carolina, by eight shots.

:15:15. > :15:19.He is the first British winner of the tournament since 1919.

:15:19. > :15:22.Now back to the Olympics, and the events of the past two weeks in the

:15:22. > :15:24.capital have affected thousands of lives. Spectators who've lined the

:15:24. > :15:29.streets, volunteers who've helped out, and traders on the fringes of

:15:29. > :15:39.the Olympic Park. Our special correspondent, Richard Bilton, has

:15:39. > :15:45.been finding out how they will remember the last fortnight.

:15:45. > :15:49.The last day of the biggest party. Her this morning, it was the

:15:49. > :15:54.marathon. Thousands came to central London for a final day in the

:15:54. > :16:01.Olympic sun. Pot of wanting to be down here is to soak up the

:16:01. > :16:05.atmosphere and wanting to be part of it. -- part of it. I expect

:16:05. > :16:10.there is a big screen somewhere... The Wood family have come up from

:16:10. > :16:15.Somerset. They are part of a London 2012 phenomenon. Those from across

:16:15. > :16:23.the UK who have felt compelled to leave their TVs and see it for

:16:23. > :16:28.themselves. It is just amazing! So many different nationalities.

:16:28. > :16:33.Everybody waving their flags and cheering. Really good. I am quite

:16:33. > :16:38.upset because I wanted to go on for a lot longer. The hope was that

:16:38. > :16:43.these Olympics would become the people's Games. It has worked. But

:16:43. > :16:48.there are other ways of judging London 2012. Like the impact on the

:16:48. > :16:54.East London. This morning, like every Games morning, the Olympic

:16:54. > :16:59.Park at Stratford was busy. But across the road, market access

:16:59. > :17:05.there has been a price. His customers are not here. -- Turker

:17:05. > :17:10.Ahmet says there has been a price. All of those signs, keep away from

:17:10. > :17:18.central London because of the Olympics. People are staying away.

:17:18. > :17:22.But some have felt the Olympic magic! Can you do the pose? Teona

:17:38. > :17:43.thing in my life and I will regret forever. The Wood family have their

:17:43. > :17:50."I was there" moment. It made us proud to be British today.

:17:50. > :17:54.memories will live long and a Paralympics lie ahead. But all

:17:54. > :17:59.parties end and London's golden time at the centre of the world is

:17:59. > :18:01.nearly done. The founder of the modern Olympics

:18:01. > :18:06.famously declared that the most important element of the Games

:18:06. > :18:16.isn't the winning but the taking part. With that in mind, here are a

:18:16. > :18:17.

:18:17. > :18:20.few of those memorable moments. From all of us here, goodnight.
