:00:11. > :00:14.He tells his party conference that he will not accept more benefit

:00:14. > :00:24.cuts unless the wealthiest in society pay a greater share in

:00:24. > :00:28.taxes. The Liberal Democrats will start at the top and work down. We

:00:28. > :00:36.will not, as some people seem to be suggesting, start at the bottom and

:00:37. > :00:46.work up. Special church services are held in tribute to the two

:00:46. > :00:48.police officers killed in Greater Liverpool and Manchester United put

:00:48. > :00:58.sporting rivalry aside to honour the victims of the Hillsborough

:01:10. > :01:13.Good evening. The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg says he will

:01:13. > :01:17.redouble his efforts to push for taxes that target the very wealthy

:01:17. > :01:19.in order to help reduce the deficit. Mr Clegg has conceded more welfare

:01:20. > :01:22.cuts may be necessary, but he insisted at his party's annual

:01:22. > :01:32.conference that they shouldn't happen without the rich being made

:01:32. > :01:36.

:01:36. > :01:43.They are certainly in a bad way, but the Liberal Democrats are

:01:43. > :01:46.confident they can revive their fortunes. Nick Clegg has urged

:01:46. > :01:51.activists to shout about their achievements in government, but

:01:51. > :01:55.they are growing anxious as poll rating tumble. Many blamed the

:01:55. > :01:59.decision to share power with the Conservatives. If you had to pick a

:01:59. > :02:03.political party to not be in coalition with it would be the

:02:03. > :02:07.Conservatives. They had to take unpopular decisions on spending and

:02:07. > :02:12.there is more to come. Nick Clegg warned his coalition partners that

:02:12. > :02:15.the rich would need to pay their fair share. When we look for

:02:15. > :02:24.additional savings in the years ahead, the Liberal Democrats will

:02:24. > :02:28.start to the top and work down. We will not be allowing some of these

:02:28. > :02:36.wild suggestions from the right, but all the savings should come

:02:36. > :02:39.from welfare. Scoop out 10 billion from welfare, no. Those wild

:02:39. > :02:45.suggestions came from the Chancellor, George Osborne. Nick

:02:45. > :02:50.Clegg admits there will be some benefit cuts, but he said -- but

:02:50. > :02:55.this man said many Lib Dems were concerned. We do not accept this.

:02:55. > :02:59.We think we have been too right- wing. Nick Clegg's answer was a man

:02:59. > :03:07.should tax on properties worth more than 2 million, but he has failed

:03:07. > :03:13.to persuade the Tories to adopted. The mansion tax is not the only way

:03:13. > :03:17.to make people at the top make a contribution. We have already, as I

:03:17. > :03:24.had is that -- as I have illustrated, there are many

:03:24. > :03:29.measures insured at the top 10% pay more tax. The idea of more attacks

:03:29. > :03:33.on the rich was not universally welcomed on the streets of Brighton.

:03:33. > :03:42.They should be taxed more but not too much more. If they have earned

:03:42. > :03:46.their money, good luck to them. They have work part for their money.

:03:46. > :03:50.There were public disagreements between the Liberal Democrats. Nick

:03:50. > :03:55.Clegg is keen to reassure his party that he is protecting the poor and

:03:55. > :03:59.is gearing up for more battles with the Chancellor. It was all smiles

:03:59. > :04:03.for Nick Clegg and his wife, celebrating their 12 a wedding

:04:03. > :04:12.anniversary. He did not want to be drawn on the state of his political

:04:12. > :04:17.marriage. Can I keep discussions about that Conservatives out of it?

:04:17. > :04:22.Nick Robinson is in Brighton. Many are going to ask if he can really

:04:22. > :04:27.deliver. To deliver, he needs to persuade his conservative coalition

:04:27. > :04:30.partners, so what we are seeing here, and remember this is a party

:04:30. > :04:35.conference, is a very public negotiation of the Liberal

:04:35. > :04:39.Democrats with their Tory partners. In effect, he is saying he will not

:04:39. > :04:43.put up with this, but he needs to win the argument. What was striking

:04:43. > :04:49.on a higher taxes for the wealthy was we did not hear any policy that

:04:49. > :04:52.was likely to actually be agreed by the Tory coalition partners. On the

:04:52. > :04:57.issue of benefit cuts, that is something the Chancellor said he

:04:57. > :05:03.wanted to see in the final year of the Parliament going into the next

:05:03. > :05:12.general election. George Osborne's point was, in his next Budget, if

:05:12. > :05:17.you do not cut welfare, you need to find these cuts elsewhere. I was

:05:17. > :05:22.struck by the rhetoric, but also struck by this. It is clear that

:05:22. > :05:25.the Lib Dems cannot tell us how they will deliver this. In their

:05:25. > :05:32.bed to stay alive as a political force, they are saying what they

:05:32. > :05:35.are passionate about doing. A man has died and another has been

:05:35. > :05:37.seriously injured in a skydiving accident near Peterborough. It is

:05:37. > :05:40.thought the men collided approximately 50 ft above the

:05:40. > :05:43.ground, collapsing their parachutes. One man in his early fifties died

:05:43. > :05:52.at the scene. The other, in his late twenties, is in Addenbrooke's

:05:52. > :05:55.Hospital in Cambridge with severe spinal and leg injuries.

:05:55. > :05:58.Prayers were said today at church services in Greater Manchester for

:05:58. > :06:00.the two police constables murdered this week in a gun and grenade

:06:00. > :06:03.attack. The bishop leading the prayers said the community in

:06:03. > :06:09.Mottram, where the murders took place, must stand as one to avoid

:06:09. > :06:13.such deaths becoming commonplace. Our correspondent is there tonight.

:06:13. > :06:17.Tonight, the flowers had been covered with plastic to protect

:06:17. > :06:21.them from the rain. The individual messages that were attached to them

:06:21. > :06:28.have been taken away to stop them being destroyed and preserve them

:06:28. > :06:34.for the future, as those services have been taking place. A short

:06:34. > :06:39.distance from the scene of the shootings, the local church. This

:06:39. > :06:45.morning, there was a special service here to remember Nicola

:06:45. > :06:49.Hughes and Fiona Bone. Police officers do not ask who it is that

:06:49. > :06:58.calls for their help, and so we remember today that they died here

:06:58. > :07:02.in our service in fulfilling their duty for our protection. People

:07:02. > :07:08.from the local area came to spend time in prayer. Cannot stop

:07:08. > :07:16.thinking about them, such lovely, brave girls. Just normal people

:07:17. > :07:19.that were shot for no reason. afternoon on BBC One, the Chief

:07:19. > :07:26.Constable of Greater Manchester police spoke about what had

:07:26. > :07:36.happened this week and his own view of faith. For me, personally,

:07:36. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:42.prayer is important. You often feel helpless, so praying for the dead

:07:42. > :07:46.Officers and their families becomes an expression of hope. He says he

:07:46. > :07:51.is grateful for the police officers from across the UK who have offered

:07:51. > :07:54.to cover from colleagues -- or colleagues when the funerals take

:07:54. > :07:59.place. Dale Cregan, the man accused of killing them in a gun and

:07:59. > :08:05.grenade attack, will appear before Manchester crown court again

:08:05. > :08:10.tomorrow. At the top of the street where the officers died, more

:08:10. > :08:14.people have been coming to lay flowers in their memory. Many are

:08:14. > :08:18.from residents saying how much they appreciate the police, others from

:08:18. > :08:23.colleagues as different shifts come to pay their respects. People are

:08:23. > :08:27.still coming here in the rain this evening to pick flowers down. Dale

:08:27. > :08:32.Cregan appearing in court tomorrow. Also, a 15-year-old youth arrested

:08:32. > :08:42.on Friday on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has been bailed

:08:42. > :08:43.

:08:43. > :08:45.pending further inquiries. As the civilian casualties mount in the

:08:45. > :08:48.Syrian conflict, rebels are claiming increasing success in

:08:48. > :08:50.targeting government troops. The region of Latakia in the west of

:08:50. > :08:53.the country has suffered heavy casualties from the government's

:08:53. > :08:55.side. It is a stronghold of President Assad, and his minority

:08:55. > :09:05.Alawite Muslim sect. Our world affairs correspondent was granted

:09:05. > :09:09.

:09:09. > :09:14.official access to the area. This woman is burying her husband today.

:09:14. > :09:24.The light from my eyes is gone, she wails. Her husband was in the army,

:09:24. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:27.so was her brother. She buried him not long ago. The 26-year-old

:09:27. > :09:34.Flight Lieutenant died when his helicopter crashed. The military

:09:34. > :09:43.has brought his coffin home. The entire village turns out. Men fired

:09:43. > :09:52.guns, women throw rice. It is the 17th time this village has lost one

:09:52. > :10:01.of its own. In this area, not a day goes by without a few more. This is

:10:01. > :10:10.the heartland of President Assad, and his local community. There is

:10:10. > :10:14.space enough to mourn his trips. Many Syrians do not get that chance.

:10:14. > :10:18.-- mourn his soldiers. For many here, this war threatens their very

:10:18. > :10:26.identity. That is why members of this minority sect are ready to

:10:26. > :10:30.defend it and the President with their lives. Another young man

:10:30. > :10:37.buried, another soldier dead. In villages like this, some things

:10:37. > :10:44.have not died. Their support for their President and their love for

:10:44. > :10:50.Syria. I am interrupted by the teacher of the soldiers. There are

:10:50. > :10:57.two sides. We do not like the conflict and we do not want it but

:10:57. > :11:06.we are forced to. Syrians are dying every day. Everybody says they want

:11:06. > :11:16.peace, but with each new grave it seems further away. The next

:11:16. > :11:19.

:11:19. > :11:21.funeral starts in an hour in this village.

:11:21. > :11:24.Manchester United and Liverpool fans put aside sporting rivalry

:11:24. > :11:27.this afternoon to pay an emotional tribute to the 96 people who died

:11:27. > :11:30.in the Hillsborough disaster. The United manager Sir Alex Ferguson

:11:30. > :11:33.had made a personal plea to his team's supporters, ahead of today's

:11:33. > :11:36.Premier League fixture, to show their respect in wake of the report

:11:36. > :11:41.that was highly critical of police and emergency services on the day

:11:41. > :11:46.of the disaster. They are great rival scarred by tragedy. But all

:11:46. > :11:56.of these clubs have been bruised from tots from the terraces about

:11:56. > :12:03.painful incidents in the past. -- planting. Today, Manchester United

:12:03. > :12:07.wanted a different attitude. Sir Bobby Charlton was carrying roses

:12:07. > :12:13.in tribute. The two team captains released red balloons for each of

:12:13. > :12:19.the dead as the fans sang Liverpool's famous anthem. Earlier

:12:19. > :12:23.this month, the Hillsborough report clear Liverpool fans of causing the

:12:23. > :12:27.tragedy in 1989 and expose the extent of the subsequent cover-up.

:12:27. > :12:34.Many are hoping the report will prompt a change in behaviour in the

:12:35. > :12:38.terraces. Sir Alex Ferguson added his voice to appeals for behaviour.

:12:38. > :12:43.A letter handed out to fans in Anfield said the rivalry should not

:12:43. > :12:50.be based on hatred and Manchester United stood together with their

:12:50. > :12:55.great neighbours in remembering the loss. Today, the handshake showed

:12:55. > :13:00.the players had set aside old grievances. Liverpool captain

:13:00. > :13:05.Steven Gerrard scored the first goal, which was fitting. His cousin

:13:05. > :13:10.was the youngest man to die at Hillsborough. The match did not

:13:10. > :13:17.brought Liverpool's way, Manchester United winning 2-1. The Liverpool

:13:18. > :13:24.fans are treated -- appreciated the tributes. It was treated Brian May.

:13:24. > :13:28.Shame about the result. It was pretty much respected, there was no

:13:29. > :13:33.chanting we heard. Most fans are hoping the spirit of this match

:13:33. > :13:41.will last, but it is too early to say whether it will set a new tone

:13:41. > :13:51.for future matches between these two famous clubs. Know the rest of

:13:51. > :13:52.

:13:52. > :13:56.the sport. -- an-hour for the rest. Premier League chance -- champions

:13:57. > :14:02.Manchester City were frustrated with a 1-1 draw against Arsenal.

:14:02. > :14:08.Joleon Lescott's header was the early difference, but Arsenal got

:14:08. > :14:13.their reward when Laurent Koscielny equalised in the last few minutes.

:14:13. > :14:18.Then Babak gave Newcastle a 1-0 victory over Norwich City, and

:14:18. > :14:23.Tottenham beat Queen's Park Rangers 2-1. Lewis Hamilton admitted he was

:14:23. > :14:26.gutted after a gearbox failure ruined his chance of winning the

:14:26. > :14:31.Singapore Grand Prix. He felt he was cruising along at the beginning

:14:31. > :14:41.on pole position. Sebastien vet all claimed victory under the

:14:41. > :14:41.

:14:41. > :14:47.floodlights. -- Vettel. It was a difficult start for Lewis Hamilton.

:14:47. > :14:51.The first corner was chaotic but everyone squeezed through safely.

:14:51. > :14:57.If pop-star Katy Perry was expecting fireworks, she might have

:14:57. > :15:01.been disappointed by the cautious approach Lewis Hamilton promised.

:15:01. > :15:05.It was paying dividends until the halfway mark. It was the third time

:15:05. > :15:10.the McLaren driver has failed to finish the season and saw them drop

:15:10. > :15:15.to 4th in the drivers' Championship. His misfortune handed the world

:15:15. > :15:19.champion the lead. All Lewis Hamilton could do was watch his

:15:19. > :15:24.title ambitions that away. Singapore maintained its tradition

:15:24. > :15:30.of all was leading a safety car, with Michael Schumacher ending his

:15:30. > :15:34.race in the same spectacular fashion. The world champion claimed

:15:34. > :15:41.his second win of the season and boosted his hopes of catching

:15:41. > :15:50.Fernando Alonso. In the last half- hour, England have fallen to their

:15:50. > :15:59.heaviest defeat in the World Twenty20 Tournament. India were
