:00:12. > :00:16.A new inquiry in the Jimmy Savile scandal, over the decision to give

:00:16. > :00:21.him a senior role at Broadmoor Hospital in the 1980s. Former

:00:21. > :00:24.patients say Savile abused them after he was given keys to the

:00:24. > :00:30.institution. The Head of RBS says he's "disappointed" over the

:00:30. > :00:40.collapse of a deal to sell hundreds of branches to Santander. Andy

:00:40. > :00:52.

:00:52. > :00:55.Murray beats Roger Federer to reach Good evening. The Department of

:00:55. > :01:00.Health is to investigate its decision to appoint Jimmy Savile as

:01:00. > :01:04.head of a taskforce overseeing Broadmoor Hospital in the late

:01:04. > :01:07.1980s. Former patients say they were assaulted by the Prenter after

:01:07. > :01:11.he was given the keys to the institution. The police say they

:01:11. > :01:17.are now following more than 300 lines of inquiry into allegations

:01:17. > :01:22.of sexual abuse by the television Prenter over several decades. Jimmy

:01:22. > :01:27.Savile was a volunteer at Broadmoor for years, started in the late 1

:01:27. > :01:31.'60s's. He had his own set of keys, an office and a bedroom. There he

:01:31. > :01:36.spoke of the work he did with the hospital patients, including some

:01:36. > :01:42.of Britain's most notorious criminals. I had great rapport with

:01:42. > :01:46.the patients down there and we found an instinctive friendship,

:01:46. > :01:51.regardless of what they'd done because there comes a time when you

:01:51. > :01:55.have to forget what somebody's done and get on with the job of trying

:01:56. > :02:01.to fix them back up, or repairing the damage to their minds that

:02:01. > :02:09.caused them to do these dreadful things in the first place. In 1988

:02:09. > :02:19.when the hospital's management team was suspended, saf -- Savile was

:02:19. > :02:21.

:02:21. > :02:26.asked to set up a taskforce for a time. The Department said: Savile's

:02:26. > :02:30.reputation as a charity fundraiser protected him from scrutiny, one

:02:30. > :02:35.former Broadmoor patient, who has since had a sex change, claims to

:02:35. > :02:41.have been molested by him on one of the wards. Two other patients

:02:41. > :02:47.witnessed it. We could do nothing. If we stood up and said - look what

:02:47. > :02:50.he is doing, they would have punished us at nond believed us.

:02:50. > :02:55.Historically, people in mental hospitals are never believed.

:02:55. > :02:58.of the institutions with which he was connected, including the BBC,

:02:59. > :03:04.could face legal claims for compensation from his victims

:03:04. > :03:08.despite the years that have lapsed. There have been cases against the

:03:08. > :03:13.Catholic Church, cases against schools and childrens homes. What

:03:13. > :03:19.the compensation would be for, would be their psychiatric injury.

:03:19. > :03:25.One newspaper today claims ChildLine founder was alerted to

:03:25. > :03:30.Savile's activities. She said she has no memory of that, but there

:03:30. > :03:37.were rumours. I think Fleet Street knew about. It I was told the NHS

:03:38. > :03:41.knew about it and the music industry knew about it. When I say

:03:42. > :03:50."knew" they heard rumours. rumours about Jimmy Savile, it

:03:50. > :03:53.seems, never reached the ears of those responsible for Broadmoor.

:03:53. > :03:56.The Chief Executive of Royal Bank of Scotland has said he's

:03:56. > :04:00."disappointed" at the collapse of the sale of more than 300 branches

:04:00. > :04:03.to the Spanish bank, Santander. Stephen Hester insisted there would

:04:03. > :04:12.be no disruption to customers and RBS would seek a new buyer. The

:04:12. > :04:15.bank had been ordered to sell the assets by the European Commission.

:04:15. > :04:20.RBS was selling more than 300 branches, not because it wanted to,

:04:20. > :04:25.but because it was forced to. The sale was ordered by the European

:04:25. > :04:29.Commission, it was the price the bank had to pay for approval of the

:04:29. > :04:33.45 billion Government bail out it received at the height of the

:04:33. > :04:37.financial crisis. The deal turned sour. Santander say it is pulled

:04:37. > :04:44.out because the entire process was taking too long and no chance of it

:04:44. > :04:50.being completed in a reasonable time frame. RBS's chief checksive,

:04:50. > :04:54.Hester, insists that the heavy lifting on the sale had been done.

:04:54. > :04:59.It prompted speculation that Santander might have preferred to

:04:59. > :05:04.focus on its existing business. Some experts believe both sides

:05:04. > :05:09.have lost out. It's a double edged sword. For RBS it's a case of

:05:09. > :05:17.losing a major deal which would have bolstered their finances.

:05:17. > :05:22.Santander are looking -- losing a big opportunity to expand their

:05:22. > :05:25.business. RBS still has to find a buyer for those branches. That may

:05:25. > :05:30.prove tricky. The BBC understand that is two institutions have

:05:30. > :05:36.already approached the bank about a possible sale. RBS insists its

:05:36. > :05:40.customers won't be affected by Santander's withdrawal. 1.8 million

:05:40. > :05:47.account holders and 240,000 businesses have been left unsure

:05:47. > :05:50.who their bank will be in 12 months' time. The senior Labour

:05:50. > :05:53.backbench MP Sir Stuart Bell has died. He was 74 and had been

:05:53. > :05:57.suffering from cancer. Stuart Bell was elected to represent

:05:57. > :06:02.Middlesborough in 193 and held the seat through seven general

:06:02. > :06:07.elections. He was knighted in 2004 for his services to Parliament.

:06:07. > :06:09.Andy Murray is through to the final of the Shanghai Masters after

:06:10. > :06:17.beating Roger Federer in straight- sets. The British number one will

:06:17. > :06:21.now face Novak Djokovic, the man he defeated to win last month's US

:06:21. > :06:26.Open. The small eths of margins can be the difference between winning

:06:26. > :06:31.and losing at this level. Ask Andy Murray, often mystified by Roger

:06:31. > :06:34.Federer in the past. This appears to be changing. A break in the very

:06:34. > :06:39.first game fuelled his confidence. When Federer hit three double

:06:39. > :06:44.faults in a row to gift wrap the first set, everyone started to

:06:44. > :06:50.believe. Murray has clearly got under the world number one's skin,

:06:50. > :06:55.under pressure, Federer had no answer to his power and precision.

:06:55. > :07:03.Coming down 40-0 down to break serve. Two rain delays didn't

:07:03. > :07:05.affect the Scot's nerve. In this form a third Shanghai Masters title

:07:05. > :07:11.in succession almost looks inevitable. Murray must not want

:07:11. > :07:16.this year to end. It's the opening weekend of matches in rugby's

:07:16. > :07:26.Heineken Cup with British sides in action. Earlier Saracens beat

:07:26. > :07:32.Edinburgh. Scarlets are playing Clermont, while Exeter are facing

:07:32. > :07:39.defending champions Leinster in Dublin. Jonathan Sexton penalty

:07:39. > :07:44.gave the home side the lead but Gareth Steenson drew. Mark Webber

:07:44. > :07:48.will start tomorrow's Korean Grand Prix from pole. He pipped Sebastian

:07:48. > :07:53.Vettel to the top spot by seven hundred reths of a second. Lewis

:07:53. > :07:57.Hamilton will start from third place. Jenson Button is 11th.

:07:57. > :08:02.Sunday's race is live on BBC One from 6.00 am. The Space Shuttle

:08:02. > :08:05.Endeavour, which was taken out of service last year, has been making

:08:05. > :08:10.its final journey, being driven through the streets of Los Angeles

:08:10. > :08:20.on the back of a 160-wheel lorry to a museum where it will go on

:08:20. > :08:22.

:08:22. > :08:26.display. Boldly or cautiously, it has certainly never gone here

:08:26. > :08:33.before. Having gone around the earth, the Space Shuttle's last

:08:33. > :08:38.mission is a road trip. On its way to retirement at California's

:08:38. > :08:43.Science Museum. Endeavour arrived in Los Angeles last month, with a

:08:43. > :08:46.final fly-past. Most of the shuttle was built in California, so this

:08:46. > :08:51.really is a homecoming. Tens of thousands of people have been

:08:51. > :08:56.lining the route. Parties are planned at various points along the

:08:56. > :09:01.way. I think it's great. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for

:09:01. > :09:06.folks from all over, California, LA, whatever. A great experience.

:09:06. > :09:10.one of the most exciting things of my life. I have always followed the

:09:10. > :09:14.space programme. A lot of people in the crowd are big space fans.

:09:14. > :09:19.isn't something you see driving through your neighbourhood every

:09:19. > :09:23.day of the week. Very few people thought they would ever get this

:09:23. > :09:28.close to the Space Shuttle. It has been a year in the planning. Along

:09:28. > :09:32.the route it will be close with 15cm of clearance either side. They
