:00:18. > :00:21.Good afternoon. In the past half hour, police have been giving more

:00:21. > :00:26.details of the attacks in Cardiff in which more than a dozen people,

:00:26. > :00:29.among them children, were victims of a hit-and-run. One woman died in

:00:29. > :00:39.the incident yesterday. For the very latest, live now to our

:00:39. > :00:43.correspondent Hywel Griffith. A yes, in the last half-hour, police have

:00:43. > :00:47.confirmed they believe the driver of this than not only hit people

:00:47. > :00:52.with his vehicle but got out and assaulted pedestrians.

:00:52. > :00:58.The details of this case are harrowing. The casualties include

:00:58. > :01:02.seven children aged from 23 months to seven years. Two adults are also

:01:02. > :01:06.critically ill in hospital. For a warning that this report contains

:01:06. > :01:10.flash photography. Cut down as she walked with her

:01:10. > :01:15.children. Flowers have been made at the Place where Karina Menzies was

:01:15. > :01:22.killed. The 32-year-old was hit by the full force of the van as it

:01:22. > :01:26.mounted the pavement. Paramedics were unable to revive her. Police

:01:26. > :01:31.arrested the driver after tracking this white man through the city.

:01:31. > :01:35.number of victims have been struck by the vehicle. There is witness

:01:35. > :01:40.evidence to suggest that the person we have in custody has physically

:01:40. > :01:44.assaulted people outside of the vehicle. There was a weapon which

:01:44. > :01:48.we are looking to recover and identified from witness evidence

:01:48. > :01:52.and we have a suggestion there was a weapon which was used. Officers

:01:52. > :01:57.have been standing guard outside a hospital where casualties are still

:01:57. > :02:04.being treated. They include two- year-old Amelia May, thrown from

:02:04. > :02:09.her pushchair as the van hit her mother. Both survived. It is like I

:02:09. > :02:13.haven't slept. It goes through my mind that they were both dead. It

:02:13. > :02:18.was just really shocking. With at least five separate crime scenes,

:02:19. > :02:24.police investigations are spreading across Cardiff. Many here are

:02:24. > :02:28.struggling to understand what could have triggered these crimes.

:02:28. > :02:35.Officers have also appealed for information about a black Renault

:02:35. > :02:39.Cleo which was seen driving towards the area at about 3:25pm yesterday

:02:39. > :02:43.but driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway. They believe it

:02:43. > :02:47.may have been only minutes before the first hit-and-run took place.

:02:47. > :02:51.Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man is still being questioned on suspicion

:02:51. > :02:55.of murder. If A woman and two young children have

:02:55. > :02:58.died in a house fire in North Wales. The 20-year-old woman, a four-year-

:02:58. > :03:01.old boy and a two-year-old girl were pronounced dead by

:03:01. > :03:04.firefighters who were called to the property near Prestatyn. A man and

:03:04. > :03:07.a 15-month-old baby were taken to hospital. Police have arrested two

:03:07. > :03:10.people. Detectives are trying to trace a

:03:10. > :03:13.Leeds United fan who ran onto the pitch last night and slapped the

:03:13. > :03:16.Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper. Chris Kirkland was knocked to the

:03:16. > :03:19.ground and the fan ran off. It followed violent scenes involving

:03:19. > :03:24.both sets of fans. The Football Association says it is

:03:24. > :03:26.investigating. Thousands of Union members are

:03:26. > :03:30.gathering in central London to protest against the Government's

:03:30. > :03:33.spending cuts. The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, will address a rally

:03:33. > :03:43.in Hyde Park later, where some Union leaders are expected to call

:03:43. > :03:46.

:03:46. > :03:50.for a general strike. Live now to The march has just set off within

:03:50. > :03:55.the last couple of minutes and we have just been passed by the first

:03:55. > :03:59.people. There is quite a party atmosphere, as you can hear, but

:03:59. > :04:04.the message from these people is serious, and that is that the cuts

:04:04. > :04:07.are too harsh. That is what I am hearing most. I had spoken to

:04:07. > :04:12.people who have come here from all over the country, many of them

:04:12. > :04:16.families with young children. Some have taken part in process --

:04:16. > :04:19.protests like these before but others say it is their first day

:04:19. > :04:23.and they are here because they are being affected by the cuts and they

:04:23. > :04:26.want to send a message to the Government. That is why they have

:04:26. > :04:34.joined this March. They are going to make their way to Hyde Park

:04:34. > :04:40.where there will be a rally this afternoon. And they will make the

:04:40. > :04:46.Labour Leader Ed Miliband. He told the TUC today that the Government's

:04:46. > :04:51.austerity measures have led to a national disaster. Regarding Ed

:04:51. > :05:00.Miliband speaking at the rally this afternoon, Grant Shapps, the party

:05:01. > :05:04.chairman, has said you cannot be clear about attending a march which

:05:05. > :05:08.calls for an end to the austerity. Labour has accused David Cameron of

:05:08. > :05:10.being weak for not sacking Andrew Mitchell sooner. The chief whip

:05:10. > :05:13.stepped down last night, saying the row over his confrontation with

:05:13. > :05:17.Downing Street police last month had made it impossible for him to

:05:17. > :05:22.fulfil his duties. But he admitted swearing at an officer. He's been

:05:22. > :05:25.replaced by the former Leader of the House, Sir George Young.

:05:25. > :05:29.Ceremonies are being held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle

:05:29. > :05:32.of El Alamein. The fighting between the Allies and the Germans and

:05:32. > :05:35.Italians is considered to be one of the key turning points of the

:05:35. > :05:45.Second World War. Veterans have been gathering in Egypt from around

:05:45. > :05:51.the world. From El Alamein, Jon Leyne reports.

:05:51. > :05:54.70 years on, a tribute to the fallen. This Commonwealth War

:05:55. > :06:00.graves Cemetery is on the edge of one of the great battlefields of

:06:00. > :06:06.World War II. After three years of setbacks, finally they turned the

:06:06. > :06:16.tide of German advances in Africa and the war here. Peter Watson is

:06:16. > :06:16.

:06:16. > :06:20.the last British veteran able to join the commemoration. If you are

:06:20. > :06:23.well trained and discipline, you will do anything. For your mates...

:06:23. > :06:31.You have grown up with them and you have trained each other. You are

:06:31. > :06:35.like family. The fighting raged for 12 days and 12 nights. By the end,

:06:35. > :06:40.Germany and its allies had suffered one of their first defeats of the

:06:40. > :06:45.war. If they could no longer threaten the Middle East. Instead,

:06:45. > :06:51.they were forced into way prolonged retreat. Historian at Niall Barr

:06:51. > :06:56.showed me the expanse of barren desert where more than 300,000 men

:06:56. > :07:01.engaged in mortal combat. There's no question that for the British

:07:01. > :07:06.people, after a run of defeats and humiliations for two years, that

:07:06. > :07:10.this final battle marks the turning of the tide that now possibly there

:07:10. > :07:14.might be a chance of victory. are only a handful of survivors

:07:14. > :07:20.from this great battle here today, and yet everybody knows that what
