:00:19. > :00:22.Good afternoon. Tens of thousands of people have been marching in

:00:22. > :00:26.London, Glasgow and Belfast in protest at the Government's

:00:26. > :00:30.austerity measures. The demonstrations were organised by

:00:30. > :00:32.the Trades Union Congress. In a speech in London, the Labour Leader,

:00:32. > :00:35.Ed Miliband, called the Prime Minister clueless" but was booed

:00:35. > :00:45.when he said Labour would have to make what he called hard choices,

:00:45. > :00:47.

:00:47. > :00:53.as John Moylan reports. At noon in London they started

:00:53. > :00:57.marching. Up to 100,000 people, health workers, teachers, the old

:00:57. > :01:04.and the young. An estimated 5,000 also took to the streets in

:01:04. > :01:10.Glasgow... There was a major demonstration in Belfast, too. All

:01:10. > :01:13.United with a similar story to tell. I am a nurse and sick to death with

:01:13. > :01:17.this. I have a daughter who hopes to go to university but the price

:01:17. > :01:21.of everything is up. The bankers have just walked away from this and

:01:21. > :01:25.we are paying the price. I am a teacher and icy at ground level the

:01:25. > :01:32.impact of the cuts they are making her and the effect they are having.

:01:32. > :01:36.If we don't invest in our children, we have no future. Labour's poll

:01:36. > :01:43.ratings are up and there is growing concern about where the economy is

:01:43. > :01:47.now going exactly. This is an opportunity to step up pressure on

:01:47. > :01:51.the Government which has suffered a series of setbacks. At Thame rally

:01:51. > :01:56.in Hyde Park, Ed Miliband was among dozens of speakers who said the

:01:56. > :02:00.Government's policies were not working. But there was booing when

:02:00. > :02:05.he said the Labour Party would have to make tough choices... I said

:02:05. > :02:09.whoever was in government now, there would be tough cuts. But this

:02:10. > :02:14.Government has shown that they are cutting too far and too fast. Self-

:02:14. > :02:18.defeating austerity is not the answer. The Government insists

:02:18. > :02:22.there will not waver from its plans and they criticised the Labour

:02:22. > :02:26.Leader's presence here today. turning up today at a rally that

:02:26. > :02:31.opposes every single spent -- spending cut necessary to deal with

:02:31. > :02:35.our debt, he has shown he is still in favour of more spending, more

:02:35. > :02:42.boring and even greater debt. That is what got us into this mess in

:02:42. > :02:47.the first place. -- more borrowing. There was some trouble today.

:02:47. > :02:54.Scuffles between police and anti- tax-avoidance groups. But even

:02:54. > :02:57.among mainstream unions, there are some who believe rallies are not

:02:57. > :03:00.enough and more action needs to be taken.

:03:00. > :03:03.Two people are still in intensive care in hospital after a series of

:03:03. > :03:06.hit-and-run incidents in Cardiff yesterday. A woman was killed and

:03:06. > :03:08.13 people were injured, including seven children. Witnesses say a man

:03:09. > :03:14.deliberately drove into pedestrians in five locations before getting

:03:14. > :03:16.out of his van and attacking people. Detectives are continuing to

:03:16. > :03:26.question a 31-year-old man, as Hywell Griffith reports from

:03:26. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:31.Cardiff. A speeding van caught on CCTV as

:03:31. > :03:35.its driver unleashed a wave of violence on the streets of Cardiff.

:03:35. > :03:42.The 31-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder.

:03:42. > :03:45.Police believe he also attacked pedestrians with a weapon. There is

:03:45. > :03:51.witness evidence to suggest the person we having custody has

:03:51. > :03:56.physically assaulted people outside the vehicle. There was a weapon

:03:56. > :03:59.which we are looking to recover and identify. Through the day, flowers

:03:59. > :04:04.have been laid for a mother cut down as she walked with her

:04:04. > :04:08.children. 32-year-old Karina Menzies was hit by the full force

:04:08. > :04:16.of the ban as it mounted the pavement. Paramedics were unable to

:04:16. > :04:24.revive her. The police investigations and the -- up the

:04:24. > :04:28.length and breadth of Cardiff from the West over to a retail park

:04:28. > :04:33.where two women were hit. Police say the attacks all took place

:04:33. > :04:37.within 30 minutes. In that short time, the driver hit 14 people

:04:37. > :04:42.seemingly chosen at random, most of them women and young children

:04:42. > :04:47.making their way home at the end of the school day. They include two-

:04:47. > :04:50.year-old Amelia, thrown from her pushchair as the van hit her mother.

:04:50. > :04:56.It is like I haven't slept because going through my mind was that they

:04:56. > :05:00.were both dead. It was really shocking. This evening, police have

:05:00. > :05:04.been calling people's homes and asking for their help in trying to

:05:04. > :05:08.uncover what may have triggered such violence.

:05:08. > :05:13.A women who died in a house fire in North Wales, which also killed two

:05:13. > :05:16.children, has been named as Lee- Anna Shiers. A man and a baby were

:05:16. > :05:19.injured in the blaze and are being treated in hospital. Two people are

:05:19. > :05:29.being questioned by police on suspicion of murder. Our reporter,

:05:29. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:35.Olivia Richwald is in Prestatyn. What is the latest? From here in

:05:35. > :05:38.the street you can see just how ferocious the fire was last night

:05:38. > :05:43.and the top two floors are blackened and shot from the smoke

:05:43. > :05:47.and flames. Some of the glass from the windows has been blown out.

:05:47. > :05:51.Senior crime officers have been here all day and friends have been

:05:51. > :05:55.coming to lay flowers and balloons and teddy bears in memory of those

:05:55. > :05:58.who were killed. The neighbours said last night the street was

:05:58. > :06:02.filled with smoke and they could see people upstairs trapped behind

:06:02. > :06:06.the windows. They said a man was running down the street saying, my

:06:06. > :06:10.children are stuck in the building. When firefighters arrived they had

:06:10. > :06:14.to use water jets to battle through the flames to get into the house.

:06:14. > :06:19.When they did, they found five people. There was nothing they

:06:19. > :06:25.could do to save a 20-year-old woman, named tonight as Lee-Anna

:06:25. > :06:31.Shiers, and a five-year-old boy. Amman and a 15-month-old boy

:06:31. > :06:35.rescued and are in hospital. -- a man. Two people have been arrested

:06:35. > :06:42.and it has emerged they lived in the ground floor flat of the

:06:42. > :06:45.building. The leader of the SNP, Alex Salmond,

:06:45. > :06:48.says it's game on for Scotland, as the country prepares for an

:06:48. > :06:51.independence vote in two years' time. He told the SNP Conference in

:06:51. > :06:54.Perth that the Scottish people were fed up of being ruled by a

:06:54. > :06:57.Westminster elite, and were ready for change. Here's Colin Blane.

:06:57. > :07:01.There is a sense of growing confidence within the SNP. Party

:07:01. > :07:07.membership has never been higher. There have been internal

:07:07. > :07:12.differences but the prospect of an independence referendum in 2014 has

:07:12. > :07:19.concentrated minds. Alex Salmond believes the SNP has a once in a

:07:19. > :07:24.generation opportunity. The two years that lie ahead of us now are

:07:24. > :07:29.the most important in a party's history and our country's recent

:07:29. > :07:35.history to secure a better future for our families, our country and

:07:35. > :07:39.our nation. The future starts with a yes vote. Delegates, it is game

:07:39. > :07:45.on for Scotland. Mr Salmond said the Independent's argument was

:07:45. > :07:50.there to be won. We know there are many of our fellow citizens who

:07:50. > :07:54.remain to be convinced about the merits of independence. But we also

:07:54. > :07:59.know that there is a majority for change in this country. Most of

:07:59. > :08:03.those who heard the speech seemed to share their leader's optimism.

:08:03. > :08:07.It is going to be a walkover from now on. It is on the way and it

:08:07. > :08:14.can't be stopped. It has been handed to was on a plate, on his

:08:14. > :08:18.sleeve. Delegates have repositioned their policy. Delegates are no

:08:18. > :08:24.longer anti- NATO. But Alex Salmond knows he has a long way to go to

:08:24. > :08:28.win over the Scottish public to independence. He will be hoping

:08:28. > :08:32.that journey will be easier after this conference.

:08:32. > :08:36.Detectives are still trying to trace a man who attacked the chief

:08:36. > :08:39.-- Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper during a match against Leeds last

:08:39. > :08:44.night. Chris Kirk and required treatment after being knocked to

:08:44. > :08:48.the ground. The man then ran off. It followed violence seems between

:08:48. > :08:54.both sets of fans. The FA has started an investigation.

:08:54. > :09:04.He has been called the 100 million horse and in his final race today,

:09:04. > :09:04.

:09:04. > :09:08.Frankel did not disappoint, winning the Champion Stakes at Ascot.

:09:08. > :09:13.For the real horses, this was the richest day in British racing and

:09:13. > :09:18.for the fans, a chance to catch one last glimpse of the sport's most

:09:18. > :09:22.prized possession. Nobody in this sell-out crowd will expect to see

:09:22. > :09:28.another quite like Frankel, the greatest horse in a generation and

:09:28. > :09:33.perhaps above. You don't get rich backing Federici. He is the

:09:33. > :09:36.bookie's favourite and he is odds- on to win a 14 straight sets

:09:36. > :09:44.victory. But this course is expected to be his toughest test

:09:44. > :09:48.yet. Could there be a cloud on Frankel's horizon with Cirrus day

:09:48. > :09:52.Aigles in the running, the second best? Aid of will stage fright

:09:52. > :09:59.possibly with a slow start, but then the star performance lived up

:09:59. > :10:04.to his billing, beating his French right -- rival by a leg. He makes

:10:04. > :10:10.his biggest challenge looked pretty easy! Frankel, the greatest of the

:10:10. > :10:15.greatest! It was a fairy-tale ending. He is the best I have ever

:10:15. > :10:21.had! The best I have ever seen. I am very surprised. He has never

:10:21. > :10:27.been better. Frankel has now won almost 3 million in prize-money
