:01:13. > :01:17.Hello, good evening. Tens of thousands of people have been

:01:17. > :01:21.marching in London, Glasgow and Belfast in protest at the

:01:21. > :01:24.government's austerity measures. The demonstrations were organised

:01:24. > :01:28.by the Trades Union Congress. In a speech in London, the Labour leader

:01:28. > :01:32.Ed Miliband called the Prime Minister clueless. But he was booed,

:01:32. > :01:39.when he said Labour would have to make what he called a hard choices.

:01:39. > :01:43.John Moylan reports. At noon today, central London was

:01:43. > :01:51.at a standstill. 150,000 people, including health workers and

:01:51. > :01:55.teachers, the young and the old, were on the streets. An estimated

:01:55. > :02:01.5,000 also marched in Glasgow. There was a major demonstration in

:02:01. > :02:05.Belfast as well. The Richards and Nash family are from Surrey. They

:02:05. > :02:10.travelled to London to protest over cuts to social services. We are

:02:10. > :02:13.seeing on the front line the effects that these cuts are making.

:02:13. > :02:18.They are leaving, from our perspective, leaving children more

:02:18. > :02:23.at risk. We have not seem an increase in our cost-of-living

:02:24. > :02:27.allowance for three years now. demonstration comes at a key time.

:02:27. > :02:31.Labour's poll ratings are up and there is growing concern about

:02:32. > :02:35.where exactly the economy is now going. So many will see this as an

:02:35. > :02:40.opportunity to step up pressure on the government, which has suffered

:02:40. > :02:45.a series of mid-term setbacks. At a rally in Hyde Park, speakers lined

:02:45. > :02:52.up to criticise cuts to public spending. The government is trying

:02:52. > :02:55.to divide this country between the rich and the rest. They are hurting

:02:55. > :02:59.our children and our families and they are wrecking our economy.

:02:59. > :03:03.Miliband, who owes his job to the unions, said that a Labour

:03:03. > :03:07.government would make fairer choices, but he was booed by some

:03:07. > :03:13.when he confirmed there would be cuts as well. I have said whoever

:03:13. > :03:17.wore was in government now, there would be some cuts, but this

:03:17. > :03:22.government has has shown they a good thing too far and too fast.

:03:22. > :03:26.Self-defeating austerity is not the answer. But his presence at the

:03:26. > :03:31.event was seized upon by the government. By turning up today at

:03:31. > :03:35.a rally that opposes every single spending but that is necessary to

:03:35. > :03:39.deal with our debts, Ed Miliband has shown that he is still in

:03:39. > :03:44.favour of more spending, more borrowing and even greater debt.

:03:44. > :03:53.That is what got us into this mess in the first place. There was some

:03:53. > :03:56.trouble today. There were scuffles in Oxford Street between police and

:03:56. > :04:00.anti-tax avoidance groups. And there could be trouble ahead as

:04:00. > :04:09.well. Some unions now say marches and rallies are not enough and

:04:09. > :04:12.called today for a general strike. Our political correspondent Ben

:04:12. > :04:16.Wright is at Westminster this evening. What does the Labour

:04:16. > :04:20.leader, what was he really trying to achieve by making it appearance

:04:20. > :04:23.that today? A number of things, I think. He was certainly trying to

:04:23. > :04:27.capitalise on what has been a pretty wretched week for the

:04:27. > :04:30.government. He got a big cheer from the crowd to many called David

:04:30. > :04:34.Cameron clueless and said the resignation of Andrew Mitchell at

:04:34. > :04:37.the George Osborne train tickets are goal showed what he called at

:04:37. > :04:40.culture of two nations run through the government. He had attended

:04:40. > :04:43.this rally to stand together with people from all sorts of

:04:43. > :04:47.backgrounds who do not think the government has the right plan for

:04:47. > :04:50.dealing with the deficit. The Conservatives are delighted that Ed

:04:50. > :04:54.Miliband accepted the TUC's invitation, because they hope that

:04:54. > :04:58.the voters will see the pictures of him addressing a crowd full of

:04:58. > :05:00.placards, saying no cuts and conclude this is a man in the

:05:01. > :05:05.pocket of the unions who is in complete denial about what is

:05:05. > :05:09.needed to repair the economy. Which is why I think Ed Miliband will not

:05:09. > :05:13.have minded that when he told the crowd but if Labour was in power it

:05:13. > :05:18.too would have to make cuts. He got a book from a section of the crowd.

:05:18. > :05:22.-- he was booed. It will show his critics that he was not pandering

:05:22. > :05:25.to the unions, even though there is a huge question of the detail of

:05:25. > :05:29.what sort of the radical alternative cuts Labour would be

:05:29. > :05:33.making. It is a tricky balancing act for Ed Miliband. He is trying

:05:33. > :05:38.to say that the government's plan is wrong. On the other hand, prove

:05:39. > :05:43.that Labour can be credible on the economy again.

:05:43. > :05:46.A two people are still in intensive care in hospital after a series of

:05:46. > :05:51.hit-and-run incidents in Cardiff yesterday. A woman was killed and

:05:51. > :05:55.13 people were injured, including seven children. Witnesses say Amman

:05:55. > :06:00.deliberately drove into pedestrians before eventually getting out of

:06:00. > :06:05.his bat and attacking people. -- getting out of his Shittu.

:06:05. > :06:09.Detectives are questioning a 31- year-old man.

:06:09. > :06:13.A speeding van caught on CCTV as its driver unleashed a wave of

:06:13. > :06:18.violence on the streets of Cardiff. The 31-year-old man has been

:06:18. > :06:23.questioned on suspicion of murder. Police believe he also attacked

:06:23. > :06:26.pedestrians with a weapon. There is witness evidence to suggest that

:06:26. > :06:32.the person we have in custody has physically assaulted people outside

:06:33. > :06:37.the vehicle. There was a weapon, which we are looking to recover and

:06:38. > :06:41.identify. Through the day flowers have been laid for a mother cut

:06:41. > :06:45.down when she walked with her children. 32-year-old Karina

:06:45. > :06:50.Menzies was hit by the full force of the vehicle as it neared the

:06:50. > :06:55.pits and. Paramedics were unable -- as it mounted the pavement.

:06:55. > :07:00.Paramedics were unable to revive her. The police investigation spans

:07:00. > :07:04.the length and breadth of Cardiff, with five different crime scenes

:07:04. > :07:08.from crossways roads, to the city centre and left with retail park

:07:08. > :07:13.where two women were hit. Police say the attack took place in around

:07:13. > :07:17.30 minutes. In that short time the driver hit 14 people, seemingly

:07:17. > :07:22.chosen at random. Most of them were women and young children making

:07:22. > :07:26.their way home at the end of the school day. They include two met --

:07:26. > :07:33.two-year-old Amelia, thrown from her pushchair as the van hit her

:07:33. > :07:37.mother. I have not slept, I thought they were both dead. I was really

:07:37. > :07:41.shocked. This evening, police have been calling it people's homes and

:07:41. > :07:49.asking for their help in trying to uncover what may have triggered

:07:49. > :07:53.such violence. Two people are being questioned on

:07:53. > :07:58.suspicion of murder after a woman and two young children died in a

:07:58. > :08:03.fire in north Wales. 20-year-old Lee-Anna Shiers, her four year-old

:08:03. > :08:07.nephew Bailey Allen and his two- year-old sister Skye were killed at

:08:07. > :08:13.the blaze in a first-floor flat in Prestatyn.

:08:13. > :08:16.The fire here was ferocious. Two floors Chard and black and

:08:16. > :08:22.underneath tributes left to three people who lost their lives.

:08:22. > :08:27.Brother and sister Bailey Allen and Skye Allen were aged four and two.

:08:27. > :08:31.There and, Lee-Anna Shiers, was 20. The community here is in shock.

:08:31. > :08:35.came out and realised where it was. We knew there were kids in there.

:08:36. > :08:40.This man came running down the street, saying, get my kids out,

:08:40. > :08:43.they are in there. Neighbours said the whole street was filled with

:08:43. > :08:49.smoke. They saw people stuck behind the windows and there was nothing

:08:49. > :08:53.they could do to help get them out. Firefighters rescued 23-year-old

:08:54. > :08:58.Liam Timbrell and his 15 month-old son. They are in critical condition

:08:58. > :09:02.in hospital. Police have arrested a man and woman in her forties and

:09:02. > :09:09.tonight it has emerged they live in the ground floor flat of the

:09:09. > :09:13.building. The leader of the SNP's Alex

:09:13. > :09:16.Salmond says it it is game on for Scotland as the country prepares

:09:16. > :09:20.for an independence boating two years' time. He told the SNP

:09:20. > :09:24.conference in Perth that the Scottish people are fed up being

:09:24. > :09:27.ruled by a Westminster elite and are ready for change. Here is Colin

:09:27. > :09:32.Blane. There is a sense of growing

:09:32. > :09:35.confidence within the SNP. Party membership has never been higher.

:09:35. > :09:40.There have been internal differences but the prospect of an

:09:41. > :09:48.independence referendum in 2014 is concentrating minds. Alex Salmond

:09:48. > :09:54.believes the S&P has a once in a generation opportunity. -- the SNP.

:09:54. > :09:59.The two years but like ahead of us now are the most important in our

:09:59. > :10:01.party's history and our country's recent history to secured a better

:10:01. > :10:06.future at by our families, communities and nations, a future

:10:07. > :10:12.which starts with a yes vote. Delegates, it is game on for

:10:12. > :10:18.Scotland. Mr Salmond said the Independent's argument was there to

:10:18. > :10:23.be one. We know there are many of our fellow citizens who remain to

:10:23. > :10:28.be convinced about the merits of independence. But we also know that

:10:28. > :10:32.there is a majority for change in this country. Most of those who

:10:32. > :10:35.heard the speech seemed to share their leader's optimism. It is

:10:36. > :10:40.going to be a walkover from now on. It is on the way. It can't be

:10:40. > :10:44.stopped. It has been handed to us on a plate, honestly. Delegates

:10:44. > :10:50.have repositioned their defence policy. The SNP are no longer anti-

:10:50. > :10:53.Nato. But Alex Salmond knows he has a long way to go to win over the

:10:53. > :11:03.wider Scottish public to independence. He will be hoping

:11:03. > :11:07.

:11:07. > :11:10.that process may be a little easier Ceremonies have been held to mark

:11:10. > :11:13.the 70th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein. The fighting between

:11:13. > :11:15.the Allies and the Germans and Italians was one of the turning

:11:15. > :11:25.points of the Second World War. Veterans from around the world

:11:25. > :11:31.

:11:31. > :11:36.70 years on, a tribute to the fallen. They are gathered at a war

:11:36. > :11:41.cemetery in our Alamein. That is on the edge of one of the great

:11:41. > :11:49.battlefields of World War II. Peter Watson is the last British veteran

:11:49. > :11:56.able to join the commemoration. you are well trained and

:11:56. > :12:03.disciplined, you would do anything. They are none mates. It is a family.

:12:03. > :12:08.The fighting raged for 12 days and 12 nights. By the end, Germany and

:12:08. > :12:14.its allies had suffered one of their big defeats of the war.

:12:14. > :12:20.General Montgomery had forced Rommel and his men into a prolonged

:12:20. > :12:24.retreat. This is the cockpit of the Battle of Alamein, where some of

:12:24. > :12:32.the most fierce fighting took place. A were shown the expanse of barren

:12:32. > :12:42.desert where almost 300,000 men were engaged in mortal combat. -- I

:12:42. > :12:42.

:12:42. > :12:49.was shown. The British people, for them, it marked the turning of the

:12:49. > :12:54.tide. Now, possibly, there might be a chance of victory. Only a handful

:12:54. > :13:04.of survivors remain from this battle. What happened 70 years ago

:13:04. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:09.deeply affects the shape of the world today. Sport now. Good

:13:09. > :13:14.evening. The world's best racehorse, Frankel, officially retired today

:13:14. > :13:17.after his 14th straight victory. The unbeaten colt wowed a sell-out

:13:17. > :13:27.crowd at Ascot, winning his final race - the Champion Stakes - on

:13:27. > :13:27.

:13:27. > :13:34.difficult, soft ground. For the real horses, this was the richest

:13:34. > :13:40.day in British racing. For the fans, one last chance to catch a glimpse

:13:40. > :13:46.of the best possession. The greatest horse for a generation and

:13:46. > :13:52.perhaps the greatest ever. fans' favourite and the bookies'

:13:52. > :13:59.favourite. He is odds on to end his career with a 14th straight victory.

:13:59. > :14:06.This is thought to be the toughest test yet. They are off and running.

:14:06. > :14:16.Stage fright possibly with a slow start but then he lived up to his

:14:16. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:26.billing, beating his French rival. He is pulling away. 14 out of 14.

:14:26. > :14:33.He makes his biggest challenge looked easy. For those who are part

:14:33. > :14:41.of the journey, it was the ferry tell ending. The best I ever had -

:14:41. > :14:47.the best I have ever seen. He has now won almost 3 million of prize-

:14:48. > :14:53.money. Far greater riches lie ahead. He could earn owners around 100

:14:53. > :14:57.million. His fortune has been for the few but his fame will endure

:14:57. > :14:59.for the many. Detectives are still trying to trace a man who attacked

:14:59. > :15:01.the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Chris Kirkland, during a football

:15:01. > :15:05.match against Leeds last night. Kirkland required treatment after

:15:05. > :15:08.being knocked to the ground by the man, who then ran off. It followed

:15:08. > :15:12.violent scenes involving both sets of fans. The Football Association

:15:12. > :15:15.has launched an investigation. There were eight matches in the

:15:15. > :15:18.Premier League today and you can catch the highlights in Match of

:15:18. > :15:23.the Day following this programme so, this is your chance to leave the

:15:23. > :15:26.room. At Old Trafford, Manchester United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson,

:15:26. > :15:32.said he was embarrassed after Rio Ferdinand refused to take part in

:15:32. > :15:35.an anti-racism day. The defender chose not to wear a T-shirt backing

:15:35. > :15:40.the kick it out campaign during the warm-up before their game against

:15:40. > :15:42.Stoke. United went on to win 4-2. Chelsea have announced that John

:15:42. > :15:46.Terry will keep the club captaincy despite beginning a four-match ban

:15:46. > :15:50.for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. Chelsea's goal keeper

:15:50. > :15:55.Petr Cech wore the armband today as they went on to beat Tottenham 4-2

:15:55. > :16:05.at White Hart Lane. Elsewhere, Liverpool had their first home win

:16:05. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:14.in the league this season beating Norwich, who were second from

:16:14. > :16:17.bottom at the start of the day, beat Arsenal at home. Champions

:16:17. > :16:19.Manchester City had to come from a goal down to beat West Bromwich

:16:19. > :16:23.Albion. In the Scottish Premier League, Celtic maintained their

:16:23. > :16:30.three point lead at the top after beating St Mirren 5-0 away. Four of

:16:30. > :16:33.those goals came in the first half. Victor Wanyama scoring two of them.

:16:33. > :16:36.Elsewhere, there were also wins for Ross County and St Johnstone.

:16:36. > :16:39.Scotland's women are just a win away from securing a place at next

:16:39. > :16:41.year's European Championships. They drew the first leg of their

:16:41. > :16:44.qualifying play-off against Spain 1-1 at Hampden. Kim Little with a

:16:44. > :16:47.penalty in the first half. England have already qualified for the

:16:47. > :16:50.tournament. They threw away a 2-0 lead to draw their friendly against

:16:50. > :16:53.France 2-2 in Paris. Lance Armstrong has admitted he has had a

:16:53. > :16:55.difficult couple of weeks since a United States Anti-Doping Agency

:16:55. > :16:58.report said he'd been involved in the most sophisticated and

:16:58. > :17:00.successful drugs programme cycling has ever seen. Speaking at the 15th
