:00:26. > :00:30.Good evening. President Obama and his Republican

:00:30. > :00:35.rival, Mitt Romney, have begun throw days of campaigning across

:00:35. > :00:40.several swing states that could decide the outcome of Tuesday's

:00:40. > :00:44.election. Polls -- poles suggest that the candidates are almost tied

:00:44. > :00:50.with President Obama slightly ahead in many of the battle states.

:00:50. > :00:56.We report from the key swing state now of Ohio.

:00:56. > :01:01.The size of the crowd was overwhelming. A spectacular mega

:01:01. > :01:09.rally in Owe hoe you -- Ohio last night to launch Mitt Romney's final

:01:09. > :01:15.sprint. With him, a small army of governors, Senators and Republican

:01:15. > :01:19.notables, braving the freezing weather to offer their support.

:01:19. > :01:24.Now you have heard that they have gathered as he are about to fan out

:01:24. > :01:30.across the entire nation to ensure with we have victory on November

:01:30. > :01:33.6th. Today, President Obama too was in

:01:33. > :01:40.Ohio, buoyed up after the leadership of the hurricane.

:01:40. > :01:43.It is a spirit that says no matter how bad a storm is, or how bad

:01:43. > :01:49.tough times are, we are in this together.

:01:49. > :01:53.The likely carve up of the electoral map is clear in most

:01:53. > :01:58.places. Both candidates are now on a breathless dash to win over swing

:01:58. > :02:05.states that could go either way. President Obama's schedule loops

:02:05. > :02:10.from Ohio to Wisconsin and Iowa, fin irning up in Virginia. Mitt

:02:10. > :02:14.Romney's route leaps from New Hampshire to the midwest and two

:02:14. > :02:20.stops in Colorado. It is here in the American midwest, that this

:02:20. > :02:24.election is fought most fiercely. This so-called bell weather state,

:02:24. > :02:27.which for decades has voted with the winner, but this time, when

:02:28. > :02:31.there is pressure on people to cast their vote early, when it is

:02:31. > :02:37.thought that a fraction of voters have made their choice, how much

:02:37. > :02:41.difference will all of this frantic last-minute campaigning make?

:02:41. > :02:48.Defence contractor, Derek, know what is he will do on Tuesday.

:02:48. > :02:52.be voting for Mitt Romney. He, at least, has a plan for turning the

:02:52. > :02:57.economy around. Getting -- getting the jobs. He has done it before,

:02:57. > :03:03.but on a larger scale, I would like to give him a chance with the

:03:03. > :03:07.economy of the country. A retired teacher has two daughters

:03:07. > :03:12.in the Navy and is a registered Republican.

:03:12. > :03:15.I am voting for President Obama. He has worked very hard. Maybe he has

:03:15. > :03:19.not gotten everything done, but he has done a lot.

:03:19. > :03:28.President Obama may have the edge here, and in other swing states,

:03:28. > :03:32.but it is very narrow. On Tuesday everlast vote may count.

:03:32. > :03:37.Mobile petrol stations are being set up around New York city to

:03:37. > :03:41.distribute free fuel because of the shortages caused by Superstorm

:03:41. > :03:46.Sandy.00,000 people in the New York area are still without power. Some

:03:46. > :03:52.underground stations are closed, but most are working. Four the

:03:52. > :04:00.latest let's go live to Jane Hill in New York. So, New Yorkers are

:04:00. > :04:03.facing a degree of disruption still? Well, it has been a huge

:04:03. > :04:07.increasing problem for the authorities here, the electricity

:04:07. > :04:12.over the last few days. Petrol, people are not just queuing for an

:04:12. > :04:19.hour or two to fill up their care, we are talking about people queuing

:04:19. > :04:25.for six to eight hours. Tempers are frayed and there have been

:04:25. > :04:33.unpleasant scenes. The governor talked to journalists in a couple

:04:33. > :04:38.of hours -- in the last couple of hours, to say that more gals of gas

:04:38. > :04:42.are being brought here, 28 million. So asking the people not to panic

:04:42. > :04:45.buy. Also the problem with the late call

:04:45. > :04:49.from the Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, to cancel the New York City

:04:49. > :04:53.Marathon. More than 45,000 runners. Many agree with the decision, but

:04:53. > :04:55.people are questioning why it was taken so late in the day, not

:04:55. > :05:00.allowing people time to change their plans.

:05:00. > :05:05.Teach. -- thank you very much.

:05:05. > :05:08.Syrian government officials say that their forces have killed a

:05:08. > :05:12.large number of rebel who is earlier today launched an attack on

:05:12. > :05:17.a military base in the north of the country. Opposition fighters have

:05:17. > :05:22.been trying to seize control of the Taftanaz air base, used by the

:05:22. > :05:25.Syrian army to mount air attacks on the rebels.

:05:25. > :05:32.The rebel offence i began at first light.

:05:32. > :05:37.The fighters opened fire on the Taftanaz air base, using multiple

:05:37. > :05:41.rocket launchers and mortars. The video footage has not been verified,

:05:41. > :05:44.but it is thought genuine. If the rebels manage to capture the

:05:44. > :05:51.airport it could be a major development.

:05:51. > :05:54.This base provides the major route for the Bashar al-Assad to supply

:05:54. > :05:58.his soldiers. Most of the strategic towns have been captured by the

:05:58. > :06:05.rebels. This road would be then controlled by the rebels.

:06:05. > :06:10.Syrian TV today, said that the attack on the airport was repelled.

:06:10. > :06:14.For some time now, the rebels have been trying to counter the

:06:14. > :06:19.government's increasing use of airpower. These new pictures appear

:06:19. > :06:24.to show a jet fighter on a bombing run, close to the Taftanaz air base,

:06:25. > :06:30.but neither side in the conflict seems capable of delivering a

:06:30. > :06:34.decisive blow on the battlefield. The uprising in Syria began 19

:06:34. > :06:39.months ago. Bashar al-Assad still is in power, helped in no small

:06:39. > :06:44.part by opposition that is fragmented. A presentation is to be

:06:44. > :06:48.made in the Gulf state of Qatar to bring together these desperate

:06:48. > :06:55.elements, but there is looking like there could be little progress

:06:55. > :06:59.towards a united front. On the ground in Syria, the

:06:59. > :07:06.immediate aftermath after one of the latest attacks. People in panic.

:07:06. > :07:11.Amidst the chaos, the mood is simply one of desperation.

:07:11. > :07:15.A man who claims he was sexually abused by a leading Conservative

:07:15. > :07:18.politician, more than three decades ago is asking for a meeting with

:07:18. > :07:24.the Prime Minister to call for a fresh investigation. The claims

:07:24. > :07:29.made in a BBC Newsnight report date back to a scandal, the subject of a

:07:29. > :07:33.public inquiry into child abuse in North Wales in the 1970s. The

:07:33. > :07:37.allegations involving someone still alive but not named by the

:07:37. > :07:42.programme. We were basically sexually abused.

:07:42. > :07:46.Various things would happen. Drink was involved. It was basically rape.

:07:46. > :07:49.But there would not be just him, there were other people involved as

:07:49. > :07:54.well. The Government has said it intends

:07:54. > :08:00.to tighten rules for doctors providing care to patients thought

:08:00. > :08:06.be to dying. Under the plans, NHS staff have to consult relatives

:08:06. > :08:09.before taking decisions for taking pain relief. Some of the methods,

:08:09. > :08:12.including one called the Liverpool Care Pathway have caused concern as

:08:12. > :08:15.families say they were not consulted.

:08:15. > :08:20.An army battalion has become the first in England to be granted the

:08:20. > :08:24.freedom of the city of Edinburgh. 3Rd Battalion the Rifles has been

:08:24. > :08:28.based in the city from 2003, but traditionally recruits from the

:08:28. > :08:31.north of England. They recently returned from an

:08:31. > :08:34.operation in Afghanistan where they spent six months in Helmand

:08:34. > :08:39.province. Now the sport. In the Premier

:08:39. > :08:42.League there were wins for Wigan, Norwich and Aston Villa. Chelsea

:08:42. > :08:46.drew with Swansea. That means that Manchester United are top of the

:08:46. > :08:51.table after beating Arsenal at Old Trafford. Robin van Persie playing

:08:51. > :09:00.his first game against his former club, scored one of the goals in

:09:00. > :09:10.the 2-1 win. %% Mersey -- Robin van Persie made

:09:10. > :09:12.

:09:12. > :09:16.many flends here, but there is no time for sent -- sentiments here.

:09:16. > :09:23.There were unwelcome memories of the last season and the drubbing

:09:23. > :09:27.that could have resurfaced. United could not capitalise, even when

:09:27. > :09:32.Hamid Karzai -- Santi Cazorla had a ball in the penalty area.

:09:32. > :09:38.Wayne Rooney dropped wide. Arsenal improved after the half-time, but

:09:38. > :09:42.the hopes of a fight back were thwarted after a headed goal by

:09:42. > :09:48.Patrice Evra. Then by the dismissal of Jack Wiltshire for a second

:09:48. > :09:54.bookable offence. As they grabbed a stylish late consolation, that was

:09:54. > :09:59.with the last kick of the match. Then all friends again after all of

:09:59. > :10:04.the acrimony in the game, it was something to safer.

:10:04. > :10:08.And McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, is on pole position for the Formula One
