:00:28. > :00:31.Good afternoon. Flags are flying at half-mast across America as people

:00:31. > :00:35.mourn the killing of 20 young children and seven adults in the

:00:35. > :00:38.state of Connecticut. The gunman, named as 20-year-old Adam Lanza,

:00:38. > :00:42.went on the rampage inside a primary school in Newtown. Earlier,

:00:42. > :00:45.he had killed his mother, a teacher at the school, at their home before

:00:45. > :00:55.driving to the school. Last night the community held a vigil for the

:00:55. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:04.victims as Laura Trevelyan reports. At a vigil to remember the victims,

:01:04. > :01:14.the church was overflowing. The grief for the dead children was

:01:14. > :01:16.overwhelming. Families held one another close. For this prosperous

:01:16. > :01:24.New England community that had seemed to embody the American Dream,

:01:24. > :01:33.the killings are a devastating shock. It should not have happened

:01:33. > :01:37.to our children. They are little. They do not understand. It is hard

:01:38. > :01:42.and I grieve for their parents. see it on the news and I see the

:01:43. > :01:48.school I went to and do not believe that is where I was from. It is not

:01:48. > :01:51.clear what happened here. News organisations report that the 20-

:01:51. > :01:56.year-old killed his mother and opened fire inside the school

:01:57. > :02:06.before killing himself. Surviving children were rushed at -- from

:02:07. > :02:08.

:02:08. > :02:12.this scene. A teacher at the school explained how she protected her

:02:12. > :02:16.class. I told them they had to be absolutely quiet. I was afraid if

:02:16. > :02:20.he came in, he would hear us and might shoot at the door. I said we

:02:20. > :02:22.have to be absolutely quiet. I said there is a bad man and we need to

:02:22. > :02:25.wait for the good guys. Newtown Connecticut is now notorious

:02:25. > :02:30.because of the mass killing, during a roll-call of American towns. The

:02:30. > :02:33.President asked for a re- examination of gun laws. We have

:02:33. > :02:43.endured too many of these tragedies and each time I learn the news, I

:02:43. > :02:44.

:02:44. > :02:47.react not as a president but as anybody else would, as a parent.

:02:47. > :02:53.The Newtown pastor who lost young members of his congregation to this

:02:53. > :03:00.latest massacre added this. Guns are intended for one thing and we

:03:00. > :03:03.are not living in a war zone, we are living as human beings together.

:03:03. > :03:13.I hope this town will wake up to anything that means violence to

:03:13. > :03:17.

:03:17. > :03:19.other people. Tonight the small town is trying to understand the

:03:19. > :03:24.incomprehensible. People ask questions to which there are no

:03:24. > :03:29.answers and the parents of the dead are facing an agonising void. Our

:03:29. > :03:35.correspondent is in Newtown. It must have been a difficult night?

:03:35. > :03:39.That is right. It is early in the morning. I suspect many people in

:03:39. > :03:46.this rural community will have got very little sleep as they struggled

:03:46. > :03:53.to come to terms with the events of the past 24 hours. Little is known

:03:53. > :03:58.about Adam Lanza. He is believed to have shot his mother first, before

:03:58. > :04:04.travelling to the school, where he opened fire, firing as many as 100

:04:04. > :04:10.rounds, and killing 18 students, who are still in the building. And

:04:10. > :04:15.two others who died at hospital. We are waiting for the police

:04:15. > :04:18.authorities to update what little they have learned. This is a

:04:18. > :04:28.community still very much in morning as the country discusses

:04:28. > :04:31.what next for gun-control. Voting has begun on Egypt's controversial

:04:31. > :04:33.draft constitution. The document, which is supported by President

:04:33. > :04:35.Mohamed Morsi, has sparked nationwide protests. There are not

:04:35. > :04:39.enough judges and officials to oversee nationwide voting, so polls

:04:39. > :04:42.are happing in Cairo and other big cities and provinces first with the

:04:42. > :04:50.rest of the country voting in a week's time. Jon Leyne has been

:04:50. > :04:56.assessing the mood across the nation.

:04:56. > :05:02.The moment of decision. A simple question, do you support the new

:05:02. > :05:05.constitution for Egypt, or do you suppose it? The voting is

:05:05. > :05:11.supervised by police and troops, who have been given special powers

:05:11. > :05:15.to enable them to maintain order. Despite fears of violence and many

:05:15. > :05:21.deaths in the run-up to the voting, so far it has been largely peaceful

:05:21. > :05:26.and orderly. There is plenty of enthusiasm, even after weeks of

:05:26. > :05:30.protest, debate and argument over the new constitution. Egyptians

:05:30. > :05:34.waiting patiently to have their say on the future of their country.

:05:34. > :05:41.President Morsi was one of the first to vote at a polling station

:05:41. > :05:45.near his palace. He supports the new constitution, as do most of his

:05:45. > :05:49.Islamist allies, including the Muslim Brotherhood. Opponents

:05:49. > :05:53.include Liberals and others who want a more secular future for

:05:54. > :06:00.Egypt. They say the constitution introduces too much emphasis on

:06:00. > :06:05.Islamic values and not enough guarantees of freedom. This is the

:06:05. > :06:10.first of two days of voting. Some results may emerge during the night.

:06:10. > :06:19.The final outcome will not be known for more than one week. Egypt's

:06:19. > :06:22.future is on hold and in the balance.

:06:22. > :06:25.A mass has been held in memory of the nurse who was found dead days

:06:25. > :06:27.after answering a hoax call at a hospital treating the Duchess of

:06:27. > :06:30.Cambridge. Jacintha Saldanha's husband and two children attended

:06:30. > :06:36.the service at Westminster Cathedral. In a tribute, they

:06:36. > :06:43.described her as kind-hearted, generous and well-respected. Your

:06:43. > :06:53.loss is a painful one and nobody can take the place -- your place in

:06:53. > :06:57.

:06:57. > :07:00.my life ever again. I love you and I miss you for ever. England's

:07:00. > :07:04.cricketers have had a good third day in the Test in India but they

:07:04. > :07:06.had to be patient before reducing their hosts to 297-8 at the close.

:07:06. > :07:10.England, who lead the four match series 2-1, were left frustrated

:07:10. > :07:13.for the first six hours of the day, Virat Kohli scoring a century in a

:07:13. > :07:16.partnership of 198 with captain MS Dhoni. But, in the final hour of
