:00:23. > :00:26.Good afternoon. Police say they've uncovered "very good" evidence that

:00:26. > :00:30.may explain why a gunman shot dead teachers and 20 children at a

:00:30. > :00:34.school in the United States. The gunman, named as Adam Lanza who was

:00:34. > :00:38.20, shot his mother before going to his former school in Connecticut.

:00:38. > :00:40.Police have today revealed he had to force his way into Sandy Hook

:00:40. > :00:43.Elementary in Newtown before opening fire, killing the head

:00:43. > :00:53.teacher and other staff as well as the children some as young as five.

:00:53. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :01:02.Steve Kingstone is in Newtown for us. Steve.

:01:02. > :01:07.Yes, Clive. The police say they have identified now all of the

:01:07. > :01:10.victims in this shooting. Their bodies have been removed from the

:01:11. > :01:13.school for postmortem analysis. We expect to get the names of those

:01:13. > :01:15.victims through the police later today. The school itself, as you

:01:15. > :01:19.could imagine, is a massive ongoing crime scene investigation. As you

:01:19. > :01:23.said, the police now believe the gunman forced his way on to the

:01:23. > :01:29.premises yesterday. Officers retrieved two handguns and one

:01:29. > :01:33.semiautomatic rifle as they and we try to piece together what happened.

:01:33. > :01:39.Someone shooting in the building. The police operator relays the

:01:39. > :01:44.unfolding horror as armed SWAT teams enter the school. Units in

:01:44. > :01:48.the building - I got bodies here. Witnesses say gunshots had rung out

:01:48. > :01:53.over the school tannoy, prompting teachers to lock their classrooms

:01:53. > :01:59.and order terrified children to hide under desks and in cupboards.

:01:59. > :02:03.We kept hearing gun noises and "Put your hands up", and we just kept

:02:03. > :02:07.hearing that. But while appearing calm, teachers were fearing the

:02:07. > :02:11.worst. I am thinking that I almost have to be their parents like I

:02:11. > :02:15.have to tell them - so I said to them, "I need you to know that I

:02:15. > :02:18.love you all very much and that it's going to be OK." Because I

:02:18. > :02:23.thought that was the last thing they were ever going to hear. I

:02:23. > :02:29.thought we were all going to die. Dawn was the head teacher. She was

:02:29. > :02:33.shot dead after going to investigate the noise together with

:02:33. > :02:38.Mary Sherlack, the school psychologists, who was also killed.

:02:38. > :02:41.27-year-old Mary Soto taught some of the youngest children and is

:02:41. > :02:44.reported to have died trying to shield them. The youngest victims

:02:44. > :02:47.were in two classrooms later identified by the clothes they had

:02:48. > :02:52.been to school in. The detectives will certainly analyse everything

:02:52. > :02:56.and put a complete picture together of the evidence that they did

:02:56. > :03:02.obtain, and we're hopeful that it will paint a complete picture as to

:03:02. > :03:06.how and why this entire unfortunate incident occurred. The police have

:03:06. > :03:11.identified 20-year-old Adam Lanza as the killer, who then took his

:03:11. > :03:15.own life. Schoolmates described him as bright, but withdrawn and

:03:15. > :03:18.socially awkward, possibly with a personality disorder. He lived in

:03:18. > :03:21.the well-heeled outskirts of Newtown with his mother in the

:03:21. > :03:26.family home where her body was discovered yesterday. She was a

:03:26. > :03:28.registered gun owner and had worked as a supply teacher at Sandy Hook

:03:28. > :03:34.Elementary School. # I once was lost #

:03:34. > :03:37.What happened here is testing the faith of the quiet rural community,

:03:37. > :03:41.that always prided itself on being safe. Last night there were vigils

:03:41. > :03:47.for the victims and their families, but alongside the spiritual,

:03:47. > :03:51.political feeling is building, with grief driven calls for tighter gun

:03:51. > :03:55.laws. Gun laws are intended for one thing, and we aren't living in a

:03:55. > :03:59.war zone. We aren't living in a hunting range. We're living as

:03:59. > :04:03.human beings together, so I hope this town would wake up to anything

:04:03. > :04:06.that creates violence or hurts other people. As Newtown mourns,

:04:06. > :04:10.the president has said again that America has been through this too

:04:10. > :04:13.many times and that meaningful action is needed this scarred

:04:13. > :04:18.community is looking to Washington to make that real.

:04:18. > :04:22.Now, as to why this happened, the police a short time ago said they

:04:22. > :04:26.found very good evidence inside the family home which may point to

:04:26. > :04:29.motive. Presumably, that is some sort of correspondence or message

:04:29. > :04:33.left by Adam Lanza. They have also spoken to his brother, who didn't

:04:33. > :04:38.live in this state, but the brother of Adam Lanza says that the gunman

:04:38. > :04:47.may have suffered from a personality disorder, possibly some

:04:47. > :04:49.form of autism. Back to you. Steve in Newtown, Connecticut,

:04:49. > :04:52.thank you. The family of the nurse who was

:04:52. > :04:55.found dead in an apparent suicide after taking a prank call about the

:04:55. > :04:57.Duchess of Cambridge say her death has left an "unfillable void" in

:04:57. > :04:59.their lives. Jacintha Saldhana's husband and children were speaking

:04:59. > :05:02.outside Westminster Cathedral, where they attended a special

:05:02. > :05:05.service in her memory. From there, Richard Lister reports.

:05:05. > :05:09.For the past week Jacintha Saldanha's family have been trying

:05:09. > :05:12.to cope with the reality of life without her. They arrived at

:05:12. > :05:18.Westminster Cathedral this morning to give thanks for her life, but

:05:18. > :05:22.still with many questions about her death. The 46-year-old nurse was

:05:22. > :05:25.found hanged in her lodgings just days after she was tricked by a

:05:25. > :05:29.hoax phone call seeking details about the Duchess of Cambridge's

:05:29. > :05:37.medical condition. Today, her husband described her as having

:05:37. > :05:44.been the light in his darkness. loss is a very painful one, and

:05:44. > :05:53.nobody can take that place in my life ever again. I love you and

:05:53. > :05:57.miss you forever. Jacintha Saldanha's children also paid

:05:57. > :06:04.tribute to their mother. We are shattered, and there's an unfidable

:06:04. > :06:09.void in our lives. We love you, mum. Sleep in peace and please watch

:06:09. > :06:14.over us until we meet again in heaven. The King Edward VII

:06:14. > :06:17.Hospital released a statement last night stressing that she had not

:06:17. > :06:21.been disciplined over the hoax call because, in their words, she was

:06:21. > :06:25.the victim of a cruel trick. Jacintha Saldanha's body is being

:06:25. > :06:30.flown back to India, the country where she was born. Her family said

:06:30. > :06:33.today the funeral will be held on Monday.

:06:33. > :06:35.Egyptians have begun voting on a new constitution which has divided

:06:35. > :06:38.the country and sparked violent protests. The President, Mohammed

:06:38. > :06:40.Morsi, is backing the draft document, but opponents say it

:06:40. > :06:43.favours Islamists. Our correspondent Lyse Doucet is at a

:06:43. > :06:51.polling station in the town of Heliopolis on the outskirts of

:06:51. > :06:55.Cairo. Lyse. With all the controversy

:06:55. > :06:59.surrounding this new stew, what's the turnout been like so far?

:06:59. > :07:05.turnout has been huge. We have been at this polling station in the

:07:05. > :07:09.north of Cairo since it opened at 8.00am, local time this morning,

:07:09. > :07:13.6.00am GMT, and the queues have stretched right around the block,

:07:13. > :07:16.both on the men's side of voting and on the women's side of voting.

:07:16. > :07:20.They have had to extend the voting hours twice. There's still a few

:07:20. > :07:24.more hours to vote, and it's not clear whether everyone here and at

:07:24. > :07:28.polling stations across the country will be able to get inside to cast

:07:28. > :07:33.their ballot in time. Everyone we speak to here said it absolutely

:07:33. > :07:37.matters for them to vote on a charter that will define the future

:07:37. > :07:41.character of the Egyptian state and society. Will it move towards an

:07:41. > :07:46.Islamic state or towards greater democracy? That is where Egypt is

:07:46. > :07:47.poised now. Thanks, Lyse. Nelson Mandela is recovering in

:07:47. > :07:49.hospital after undergoing surgery for gallstones.

:07:49. > :07:52.The South African government says the procedure was successful. The

:07:52. > :07:59.former president, who's 94, was admitted over a week ago with a

:07:59. > :08:02.lung infection. A second cruise ship has docked at

:08:02. > :08:04.Southampton after some of its passengers became ill with the

:08:04. > :08:07.Norovirus vomiting bug. Yesterday more than 400 cases were confirmed

:08:07. > :08:10.on the P&O liner The Oriana. Meanwhile, several more hospitals

:08:10. > :08:20.have been closing wards and turning away visitors in an effort to stop

:08:20. > :08:24.the spread of the virus as Sophie Hutchinson reports.

:08:24. > :08:29.Birmingham City Hospital, still closed to most visitors today. It's

:08:29. > :08:32.part of the battle to concern this year's early surge in the winter

:08:32. > :08:37.vomiting bug, or norovirus, which has affected a number of wards.

:08:37. > :08:40.reason for doing this is to try to avoid the amount of traffic on site,

:08:40. > :08:44.so people come in from the community and bring bugs in with

:08:44. > :08:48.them as much as taking bugs out into the community. And there's

:08:48. > :08:51.disruption at other hospitals across the UK. Dozens of individual

:08:51. > :08:55.wards have been closed, including at this hospital in Wrexham in

:08:55. > :08:58.North Wales, and visitors at a hospital in Maidstone in Kent

:08:58. > :09:02.welcomed the restrictions. Personally, I think it's a good

:09:02. > :09:08.idea. I mean, it seems to spread like wildfire, doesn't it?

:09:08. > :09:13.course, yeah. What else are they going to sort of curb it? It's the

:09:13. > :09:18.only way, isn't it? The norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea,

:09:18. > :09:22.usually peaks between January and March, but figures this year are

:09:22. > :09:26.already showing a sharp spike in infections with an increase of 72%

:09:26. > :09:31.on the same period last year. The advice for anyone who thinks they

:09:31. > :09:37.may have the norovirus is to stay at home and away from hospital. The

:09:37. > :09:39.danger of going on to wards is that the virus is so highly infectious,

:09:40. > :09:43.it could spread to the most vulnerable patients with serious

:09:43. > :09:48.consequences. And it's not just hospitals that

:09:48. > :09:53.have been hit. The cruise operator P&O has now had to deal with a

:09:53. > :09:57.second outbreak just a short time after hundreds of passengers fell

:09:57. > :10:00.ill on another liner. England's cricketers had a good

:10:00. > :10:04.third day in the final test in India, but they had to be patient

:10:04. > :10:07.before reducing their hosts to 297 for 8 at the close. England were

:10:07. > :10:11.left frustrated for the first six hours of the day, Veerat Kohli

:10:11. > :10:14.scoring a century in a partnership of 198 with captain MS Dhoney. But
