:00:13. > :00:18.The Connecticut killings, the police say they have good evidence

:00:18. > :00:22.about what drove the gunman to murder. Adam Lanza killed his

:00:22. > :00:26.mother before turning his guns on 20 children, their teachers and

:00:26. > :00:29.himself. We are hoping it will paint a

:00:29. > :00:34.picture as to why this unfortunate incident occurred.

:00:34. > :00:36.As the police name the dead tonight, stories of courage emerge from the

:00:36. > :00:41.teachers desperate to protect their pupils.

:00:41. > :00:44.I said to them, I need you to know that I love you all very much.

:00:44. > :00:48.And that it is going to be OK. I thought that was the last thing

:00:48. > :00:53.they would hear. I thought we were oing going to die.

:00:53. > :00:57.Also in the programme: Voting is extended into the night

:00:57. > :01:01.as Egyptians go to the polls over a new constitution, that dividing the

:01:01. > :01:06.country. The family of the nurse found

:01:06. > :01:12.hanged after a prank call, say their lives have been left with an

:01:12. > :01:17.unfillable void. COMMENTATOR: That will do nicely!

:01:17. > :01:27.England's cricketers close in on the first Test serious against --

:01:27. > :01:31.

:01:31. > :01:37.series against India for almost 30 Good evening.

:01:37. > :01:41.Police say they have uncovered very good evidence that may explain why

:01:41. > :01:45.a gunman shot dead 26 children and teaching staff at a school in the

:01:45. > :01:47.United States. The killer, Adam Lanza, shot his mother before going

:01:47. > :01:53.to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in Connecticut. The police

:01:53. > :02:00.tonight say that there he took the lives of 20 children, all aged six

:02:01. > :02:05.or seven, as well as six women. Our reporter is in Newtown for us now.

:02:05. > :02:12.A short time ago, the reporters were handed pieces of paper with 26

:02:12. > :02:18.names on them. 12 girls, eight boys, six adult female members of staff

:02:18. > :02:21.at the school. All shot multiple times, the victim of a ganman who

:02:22. > :02:25.opened fire and later took his own life.

:02:25. > :02:31.The caller is indicating that there is someone shooting in the building.

:02:31. > :02:35.A police operator relaying the horror as armed SWAT teams enter

:02:35. > :02:40.the school. There are bodies here... Witnesses

:02:40. > :02:45.say that gunshots rang out over the school tannoy, prompting teachers

:02:45. > :02:51.to lock classrooms and order terrified children to hide under

:02:51. > :02:55.desks and in cup boards. We kept hearing gun noises and,

:02:55. > :02:59."Put your hands up." We kept hearing that.$$NEWLINE But while

:02:59. > :03:04.appearing calm, the teachers were fearing the worst.

:03:04. > :03:08.I am thinking I have to be their parent, almost. So I said to them,

:03:08. > :03:12.I said, I need you to know that I love you all very much. That it is

:03:12. > :03:16.going to be OK. I thought that was the last thing they would hear. I

:03:16. > :03:22.thought we were all going to die. Dawn Hochsprung was the headteacher.

:03:22. > :03:29.She was shot dead after going to investigate the noise to together

:03:29. > :03:34.with Mary Sher lack, the school psychologist, also killed. 27-year-

:03:34. > :03:39.old Victoria Soyto was reported to have died trying to shield the

:03:39. > :03:45.children. There is a second crime scene, the taped off family home in

:03:45. > :03:51.which the gunman killed his own mother. The police identified the

:03:51. > :03:55.killer as 20-year-old Adam Lanza. Bright, but withdrawn and soberally

:03:55. > :04:00.awkward, perhaps with a personality disorder. In the house, the police

:04:00. > :04:05.say that they found evidence that gives sense of the gunman's motive.

:04:05. > :04:15.We have investigators at the school and at the secondary crime scene

:04:15. > :04:18.that we discussed where the female was located as deceased. We have

:04:18. > :04:21.been given good evidence to hopefully paint a complete picture

:04:21. > :04:26.into how and more importantly why this occurred.

:04:26. > :04:30.It occurred in a picture-postcard New England town that until

:04:30. > :04:34.yesterday pride itself o on being safe, even dull. The place where

:04:34. > :04:38.everyone had a connection to the local school.

:04:38. > :04:42.Kelly Sutherland had coached some of the children in athletics and

:04:42. > :04:48.attended the same church as one of those feared lost.

:04:48. > :04:52.At the church service, the priest referenced a little girl still

:04:52. > :04:55.unaccounted for. Next week she is supposed to be playing the angel in

:04:56. > :05:00.the Christmas nativity. That shook us all up, knowing she is not

:05:00. > :05:04.accounted for now. Young lives taken in what should

:05:04. > :05:08.have been the sanctuary of a school. A sickening loss and a test of

:05:08. > :05:11.their faith. Well, the killing of schoolchildren

:05:11. > :05:16.and their teachers is playing on the conscious of a nation, where,

:05:16. > :05:21.remember, the right to bare arms is enshrineed in the constitution. Gun

:05:21. > :05:26.control was barely touched on in the recent presidential election,

:05:26. > :05:30.but in the last 24 hours, President Obama hinted at change. My

:05:30. > :05:35.colleague in Washington, Paul Adams has been looking at whether this

:05:35. > :05:40.shooting may now make a difference. Whether it is an elementary school

:05:40. > :05:46.at Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon or a temple in Wisconsin, or

:05:47. > :05:50.a movie theatre in Australia othera, or a street corner in Chicago,

:05:50. > :05:57.which will have to come together to take action to prevent more

:05:57. > :06:02.tragedies like, this regardless of the politics.

:06:02. > :06:05.In the midst of grief, is this the moment to talk about change? Guns

:06:05. > :06:09.are intended for one thing. We are not living in a war zone. We are

:06:09. > :06:13.not living in a hunting range, but as human beings together with each

:06:13. > :06:18.other. I hope that the town will wake up to anything that creates

:06:18. > :06:24.violence or hurt to other people. Gun control advocates feel the

:06:24. > :06:25.horror of Newtown cannot be ignored. Colin was shot four times at the

:06:25. > :06:30.Virginia Tech massacre five years ago.

:06:30. > :06:33.There is really something that must be done. We can't just keep having

:06:33. > :06:38.this expression of sympathy and condolences and have the

:06:38. > :06:42.conversation in that. Nothing has changed, but the shootings continue

:06:42. > :06:46.to happen. Things must be different for the future.

:06:46. > :06:50.Gun control advocates may see this as a moment for change, but it is

:06:50. > :06:56.not clear what the President has in mind when he talks about meaningful

:06:56. > :06:59.action. Here on Capitol Hill there is little appetite for new

:06:59. > :07:02.legislation, across the country, popular support for stricter

:07:02. > :07:09.controls has been on the wane for years. Business was brisk this

:07:09. > :07:14.morning at the Blue Ridge Arsenal in northern Virginia. Two of the

:07:14. > :07:18.handguns used in Newtown are popular items, but gun ownership

:07:18. > :07:23.and gun crime are declining in America. Enthusiasts worry that

:07:23. > :07:27.legislation may infringe what they see as their right to bare arms.

:07:27. > :07:33.There is always concern, but let's look at the issues, gun control,

:07:33. > :07:37.that is not the major issue. The major issue is mental health.

:07:37. > :07:42.A vigil outside of the White House after the shooting on Friday. One

:07:42. > :07:45.of many across the country. Mass shootings always trigger an

:07:45. > :07:49.anguished debate, but it does not mean that new laws are around the

:07:49. > :07:54.corner. If the President wants to turn grief into action, he will

:07:54. > :07:59.have to fight for it. Well, Steve, back to you in Newtown.

:07:59. > :08:04.Is there a sense there that this tragedy could be a watershed in the

:08:04. > :08:07.gun control debate in America, or will it simply go down as another

:08:07. > :08:10.horrible incident that does not change anything? Well, you listen

:08:10. > :08:17.to Barack Obama, he sounds like he mean it is. The comments in the

:08:17. > :08:20.White House yesterday, were some of the most gut-wrenchingly emotional

:08:20. > :08:24.remarks of his presidency. The expectation is that he is to visit

:08:24. > :08:29.and meet the relatives of the dead in the coming days, but the

:08:29. > :08:33.sceptics will say, they have heard the rhetoric, but what will he do

:08:33. > :08:38.about it? Will he use the platform of the State of the Union address

:08:38. > :08:43.in the New Year to set out a legislative agenda for the

:08:43. > :08:47.reinstatement of a ban on assault weapons that expired or lapsed back

:08:47. > :08:50.in 2004? But he knows that the gun lobby is powerful. He will be

:08:50. > :08:58.looking closely at the polls in the wake of this shooting.

:08:58. > :09:01.Thank you very much. Now, voting on Egypt's new

:09:01. > :09:06.constitution has been extended in Cairo and other large cities

:09:06. > :09:09.because of the high turnout. Mohammed Morsi is backing the draft

:09:09. > :09:13.document, which has divided the country and sparked violent

:09:13. > :09:20.protests. A second round of voting takes place in a week's time

:09:20. > :09:25.because of a lack of officials to oversee the nationwide ballots.

:09:25. > :09:31.The moment of decision, a simple question, do you support the new

:09:31. > :09:38.constitution for Egypt, or do you oppose it? Tick the brown sirbging

:09:38. > :09:42.for -- brown circle for "no", the blue circle for "yes". The vote was

:09:42. > :09:46.supervised by thousands of soldiers, reinforcing the police. For the

:09:46. > :09:50.most part, order was maintained. The queues started early and

:09:50. > :09:54.continued throughout the day. There is lots of enthusiasm, even after

:09:54. > :09:59.weeks of protest, debate and argument over the new constitution.

:09:59. > :10:01.Egyptians are waiting patiently to have their say on the future of

:10:01. > :10:06.their country. One of the first to vote was

:10:06. > :10:09.Mohammed Morsi. He supports the new constitution,

:10:09. > :10:14.as do the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. This man, for

:10:14. > :10:17.example, said he would vote as God wished.

:10:17. > :10:23.By contrast, liberals and others who want a more secular future for

:10:23. > :10:30.Egypt, lined up to vote "no". In this constitution, they are

:10:30. > :10:33.taking us, by force, and with a very sneaky way, to a very fanatic

:10:33. > :10:37.religious country, which will be much more fanatic and much more

:10:37. > :10:41.dangerous than Iran. With long queues continuing into

:10:41. > :10:45.the evening, the organisers extended the bols by several hours

:10:45. > :10:50.to give everyone a chance to vote. It was another sign of the strength

:10:50. > :10:57.of feeling on the issue. Something hardly likely to subside, even

:10:57. > :11:01.after the last vote has finally been been cast and counted.

:11:01. > :11:03.Nelson Mandela is said to be recovering in hospital after

:11:03. > :11:07.undergoing surgery for gallstones. The South African government says

:11:07. > :11:12.that the procedure was successful. The former President, 94 years of

:11:12. > :11:15.age, was admitted over a week ago with a lung infection.

:11:15. > :11:21.Several hospital wards across the country have been closed to the

:11:21. > :11:27.public because the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus. Main stone hospital

:11:28. > :11:33.in Kent and Wrexham and Myler hospital hospital are experiencing

:11:33. > :11:37.an unusual outbreak this year. Meanwhile, passengers on the P&O

:11:38. > :11:42.ferries, Oriana and Azzura have been infected by the bug.

:11:42. > :11:45.The family of the nurse found dead in an apparent suicide after taking

:11:46. > :11:49.a prank call about the Duchess of Cambridge, say her death left an

:11:50. > :11:53.unfillable void in their lives. Jacintha Saldanha's husband and

:11:53. > :11:56.children were speaking outside of Westminster Cathedral, where they

:11:57. > :12:00.attended a special service in her memory.

:12:00. > :12:03.For the past womb, Jacintha Saldanha's family have been trying

:12:03. > :12:06.to cope with the reality of life without her.

:12:06. > :12:12.They arrived at Westminster Cathedral this morning, to give

:12:12. > :12:15.thanks for her life, but still with many questions about her death.

:12:16. > :12:20.The 46-year-old nurse was found hanged in her lodgings, days after

:12:20. > :12:23.she was tricked by a hoax phone call seeking details about the

:12:23. > :12:26.Duchess of Cambridge's medical condition.

:12:26. > :12:31.Today her husband described her as having been the light in his

:12:31. > :12:38.darkness. The loss is a very painful one.

:12:39. > :12:47.Nobody can take that place in my life ever again.

:12:47. > :12:52.I love you... And miss you forever. Jacintha's children also paid

:12:52. > :12:58.tribute to their mother. We are shattered and there is an

:12:58. > :13:03.unfillable void in our lives. We love you, Mum. Sleep in peace

:13:03. > :13:06.and please watch over us, until we meet again in heaven.

:13:06. > :13:09.The King Edward VII Hospital released a statement, stressing

:13:09. > :13:15.that Jacintha had not been disciplined over the hoax call,

:13:15. > :13:18.because in their words, "She was the victim of a cruel trick."

:13:18. > :13:23.Jacintha Saldanha's body is being flown back to India, the country

:13:23. > :13:29.where she was born. Her family said that the funeral will be held on

:13:29. > :13:36.Monday. Now for a roundup of the day's

:13:36. > :13:41.sports news. Here is Katie Gornall. The

:13:41. > :13:45.cricketers are on course for a first Test win in India since 1985,

:13:45. > :13:51.enjoying a dramatic end to the day's play, taking four late

:13:51. > :13:56.wickets to reduce the host for 297- 8. You can watch and hope and wave

:13:56. > :14:01.the flag with all your might, but the most fearveent fans stand alone

:14:01. > :14:05.unless the batsmen battle for India. Virat Kohli started to fulfil his

:14:05. > :14:09.huge reputation. His first 50 of the series, reward for

:14:09. > :14:13.concentration. Old fashioned values. Occupying the crease was one thing,

:14:13. > :14:17.Mahendra Singh Dhoni began to expand it. The total headed past

:14:17. > :14:25.200, without a wicket in sight. Into the final session of the day,

:14:25. > :14:31.Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kohli were bringing the match to India. Kohli

:14:31. > :14:36.got their first with the release of a man who knew he was doing his bit.

:14:36. > :14:41.It is not always easy being India's next big thing. Then Graeme Swann

:14:41. > :14:51.struck. Rarely was an lbw decision received

:14:51. > :14:52.

:14:52. > :14:57.with pore relief. Kohli was gone for 103. Then Vidaja

:14:57. > :15:02.was out. So to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a captain criticised and analysed,

:15:02. > :15:08.England's skipper with a perfect throw, repeated replays proved

:15:08. > :15:13.Mahendra Singh Dhoni was out. When Graeme Swann went indcar were down.

:15:13. > :15:16.Well, what an end to the day. With the series at stake and two days

:15:16. > :15:23.left to play, both sides will feel that they can engineer a winning

:15:23. > :15:29.position. It is a Test Match to truly reward the patient.

:15:29. > :15:34.On to football and Match of the Day follows on BBC One. If you don't

:15:34. > :15:39.want to know what happens, then you know what to do. QPR are off the

:15:39. > :15:44.bottom of Premier League. Two goals from Adel Taarabt saw them beat

:15:44. > :15:49.Fulham it-1. No change at the top with wins for the Manchester clubs

:15:49. > :15:55.and Aston Villa putting an end to Liverpool's recent run, winning 3-

:15:55. > :16:00.16789 Celtic moved four points clear at the top of the SPL after a

:16:00. > :16:03.2-0 win against St Mirren, but the game of the day was at Tannadice

:16:03. > :16:08.when Dundee United played a thriller with Inverness.
