:00:06. > :00:10.Flooding causes further damage and disruption in parts of the UK -

:00:10. > :00:13.hundreds of flood warnings and alerts are in force. The heavy rain

:00:13. > :00:18.has hit the south west of England, disrupting rail networks on one of

:00:18. > :00:20.the busiest weekends of the year. In Scotland, one of the most badly

:00:20. > :00:30.affected towns is Stonehaven, near Aberdeen, where dozens of people

:00:30. > :00:31.

:00:31. > :00:36.have had to leave their homes. is just complete devastation and

:00:36. > :00:39.the people are traumatised now. Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust

:00:39. > :00:45.apologises to families and pays nearly half a million pounds in

:00:45. > :00:49.compensation, for failings in care. And Swansea hold Manchester United

:00:49. > :00:59.to a draw, but the Reds are still four points clear at the top of the

:00:59. > :01:09.

:01:09. > :01:12.Good evening. Flooding is causing severe disruption again across many

:01:12. > :01:17.parts of Britain, with more than 150 flood warnings in force and

:01:17. > :01:21.more heavy rain forecast tonight. The worst affected areas are in the

:01:21. > :01:24.south west of England, Wales and Scotland. Around 40 people have

:01:24. > :01:31.been moved from their homes in Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire after a

:01:31. > :01:33.river burst its banks. There's a severe flood warning for the south

:01:33. > :01:40.west of England, where there's also been extensive damage and

:01:41. > :01:44.disruption. Andrew Plant sent this report from just outside Exeter.

:01:44. > :01:49.They are tough enough to carry trains, but they buckled under the

:01:49. > :01:55.strength of this water. The rocks that support these railway sleepers

:01:55. > :02:00.simply swept away in its path. This main route disappearing under the

:02:00. > :02:04.river, cutting off much of the south-west of England. As soon as

:02:04. > :02:09.this water stops flowing, it will take engineers about 48 hours to

:02:09. > :02:13.get that piece of track replaced, and get this main line back up and

:02:13. > :02:17.running, but at the moment there is nothing they can do. The job now is

:02:18. > :02:22.to stop this water flowing further down the track, and stop it from

:02:22. > :02:27.reaching that building in the background. That is where the

:02:27. > :02:33.signalling his house, and if that is flooded it could be out for

:02:33. > :02:37.three weeks. Rescue workers used giant bags filled with water to

:02:37. > :02:41.divert this river back to its natural path, but as the water

:02:41. > :02:50.slowly lost its strength it became clear this major route would be out

:02:50. > :02:54.of action until after Christmas. This man owns the Chinese

:02:55. > :03:03.restaurant next door. Instead of serving Christmas parties, he is

:03:03. > :03:08.watching beer bottles bobbing on his dining room floor.

:03:09. > :03:12.insurance does not cover it because we are in the flood plain.

:03:12. > :03:20.Stonehaven, coastal defences were overwhelmed and rescue teams were

:03:20. > :03:24.helping people flooded from their homes. This was complete

:03:24. > :03:34.devastation and the people are traumatised now. In South Wales,

:03:34. > :03:35.

:03:35. > :03:40.the Mini landslide smashed through the back door. Here in Devon, homes

:03:40. > :03:46.were evacuated, vehicles abandoned. The flood water pushing into

:03:46. > :03:50.people's houses just today's before Christmas. You have lost your home

:03:50. > :03:55.and your belongings, and you will never replace some of the valuables

:03:55. > :04:01.you have had. Seen from above, it is clear just how much water here

:04:01. > :04:06.has nowhere to go. For homeowners and emergency services are like, it

:04:06. > :04:08.is now simply a nervous wait for more rain tonight.

:04:08. > :04:12.The flooding has caused huge disruption to those hoping to

:04:12. > :04:15.travel on one of the busiest weekends of the year. The rain has

:04:15. > :04:24.caused delays on the roads and affected dozens of rail routes, as

:04:24. > :04:28.Daniel Boettcher reports. In places the flooding has not just blocked

:04:28. > :04:33.rail lines but swept away ballasts supporting the track, making it

:04:33. > :04:38.difficult to assess how long this will take to repair. The water has

:04:38. > :04:42.disrupted key services in and out of the south-west, leaving

:04:42. > :04:48.passengers having to make other plans or allow more time to get

:04:48. > :04:52.where they want to be. There was one point where to the left there

:04:52. > :04:57.was flooding, and to the right from a bird's-eye view it looked like a

:04:57. > :05:01.train going through a notion. will bite the bullet and go today

:05:01. > :05:05.because nobody wants to travel on Christmas Eve if they can help it.

:05:05. > :05:14.If I knew it would be difficult so I allowed extra time this end to go

:05:14. > :05:20.with the flow. First Great Western has been advising passengers not to

:05:20. > :05:23.travel west of Taunton unless there journey is essential. There are

:05:23. > :05:28.signs warning passengers of what lies ahead, and Network Rail says

:05:28. > :05:33.it is unlikely that flooded section of track will reopen tomorrow.

:05:33. > :05:39.is a mess. The weather has caused problems for drivers as well, many

:05:39. > :05:47.minor roads becoming impossible. This is one road in Somerset on

:05:47. > :05:52.apart by flooding. More overnight rain could bring disruption.

:05:52. > :05:57.ground is already saturated, so many parts will continue to be

:05:57. > :06:01.badly affected with the rain from the last few days. A tomorrow could

:06:01. > :06:05.prove to be another challenging day for travellers with long journeys

:06:05. > :06:06.ahead of them. And you can keep full up to date on

:06:06. > :06:16.the flooding by visiting bbc.co.uk/news and more

:06:16. > :06:19.specifically on the travel problems at bbc.co.uk/travelnews.

:06:19. > :06:22.The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says he's disgusted and appalled by

:06:22. > :06:25.the failures of care at Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust.

:06:25. > :06:30.In one of the worst cases of mistreatment, an 84-year-old man

:06:30. > :06:34.starved to death at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. Other

:06:34. > :06:42.patients were left thirsty and unwashed. The Trust has apologised

:06:42. > :06:49.and will pay compensation. Ben Ando reports. Thirsty, but their drinks

:06:49. > :06:53.were left out of reach. Not washed for 11 weeks. Left to sit in their

:06:53. > :06:57.own excrement and in one case allowed to starve to death. These

:06:57. > :07:02.are just some of the many damning claims about standards of care at

:07:02. > :07:07.Alexandra Hospital in Redditch in Worcestershire. After legal action,

:07:07. > :07:12.the hospital now agrees the care was not good enough. Clare cross

:07:12. > :07:17.from Tewkesbury believes her 78 year-old father, David, was

:07:17. > :07:22.neglected. He was suffering from Alzheimer's and died in 20th

:07:22. > :07:26.December 10. She didn't complain at the time but now wishes she had.

:07:27. > :07:31.bitterly regret not complaining about it officially. At the time I

:07:31. > :07:35.didn't because there was so much going on and he needed a lot of

:07:35. > :07:40.care. We didn't actually make an official complaint, which I do

:07:40. > :07:50.regret. I feel like I let him down. A in a statement, the Health

:07:50. > :07:57.

:07:57. > :08:04.Last month, the trust wrote to the families and patients involved and

:08:04. > :08:09.apologised for the lack of care. They also said around 10,000 each

:08:09. > :08:15.in compensation. The managers have not admitted any legal liability.

:08:15. > :08:18.As a response, significant changes have been made to make sure patient

:08:18. > :08:22.care is excellent, which is resulting in the trust currently

:08:22. > :08:27.producing a standard hospital mortality index below the national

:08:27. > :08:31.average. The government says it is also looking at a way for patients

:08:31. > :08:34.to give immediate feedback about the care they are receiving,

:08:34. > :08:42.offering an early warning about the kind of neglect the took place at

:08:42. > :08:45.the Helen -- Alexandra Hospital. Anti-government activists in Syria

:08:45. > :08:49.say dozens of people have died in an air strike in the central

:08:49. > :08:51.province of Hama. The air strike is reported to have hit a bakery in

:08:51. > :08:54.the town of Halfaya which was recently seized by rebels. Women

:08:54. > :08:55.and children are reported to be among the dead.

:08:55. > :08:58.The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe,

:08:58. > :09:01.has promised what he describes as a "ruthless search for the truth"

:09:01. > :09:05.into what led to the resignation of the former Chief Whip Andrew

:09:05. > :09:15.Mitchell. Mr Mitchell quit after being accused of calling police in

:09:15. > :09:18.

:09:18. > :09:22.Downing Street "plebs" - something he denies. The commissioner has

:09:22. > :09:27.curtailed his Christmas break, we have had Andrew Mitchell's own

:09:27. > :09:34.account in the newspapers this morning. Where are we on this?

:09:34. > :09:40.Let's step back - who would have believed that there was an attempt

:09:40. > :09:43.for him to take his bicycle out of these gates and a cabinet minister

:09:43. > :09:48.resigned under pressure from the Metropolitan Police. Today there

:09:48. > :09:52.have been big developments - Andrew Mitchell says the allegation that

:09:52. > :09:57.he used the word plebs was a deliberate attempt to destroy his

:09:57. > :10:01.political career. Secondly, a former police minister says this

:10:01. > :10:04.could reveal the degree of corruption in some elements of the

:10:04. > :10:07.police, and thirdly the Metropolitan Police Commissioner

:10:07. > :10:13.has broken off his Christmas break not to deal with some terrorist

:10:13. > :10:16.atrocity but to deal with the fall- out from this. Despite these

:10:16. > :10:21.developments, there is one fundamental disagreement at the

:10:21. > :10:24.core of this. The official police report still says Andrew Mitchell

:10:24. > :10:28.called the police plebs, he says he didn't and there has been no

:10:28. > :10:31.evidence to prove it either way. In sport, just two matches in the

:10:31. > :10:34.Premier League today, Chelsea are currently leading 3-0 at home to

:10:34. > :10:37.Aston Villa, while earlier Manchester United were held to a 1-

:10:37. > :10:46.1 draw away at Swansea, which means they are now four points clear at

:10:47. > :10:51.the top of the table as Patrick Gearey reports. Christmas number

:10:51. > :10:56.one again. Manchester United are often chart-toppers at this time of

:10:56. > :11:06.year. They are predictable, but not boring. United were scoring goals

:11:06. > :11:14.

:11:14. > :11:18.from everywhere, the -- Patrice Evra with this one. For a time, it

:11:18. > :11:28.Manchester United were being outplayed, but with Robin Van

:11:28. > :11:28.

:11:28. > :11:31.Persie they are always a threat. He was to be denied later, but given

:11:31. > :11:41.his earlier headache, his boss thought he had reasons to be

:11:41. > :11:45.thankful. Robin Van Persie is very lucky to be alive, he could have

:11:45. > :11:48.had a broken neck. The draw is not too painful, particularly when they

:11:48. > :11:51.look at the table. First there was Gangnam Style and

:11:51. > :11:55.its one billion Youtube hits. Now there's One Pound Fish Man, also

:11:55. > :11:59.known as Shahid Nazir, who recorded his music video while working at an

:11:59. > :12:02.East London market. It's been viewed by millions on the internet,

:12:02. > :12:12.and Aleem Maqbool has been to meet his biggest fans - his family in

:12:12. > :12:15.

:12:15. > :12:23.Pakistan. In case you haven't seen it, this is the video that went

:12:23. > :12:27.viral and made Shahid Nazir the star. He had been in the UK Fourie

:12:27. > :12:33.year and was selling fish in a market in the east End of London,

:12:33. > :12:41.but because of this clip has now been signed up to sing a song that

:12:41. > :12:46.is now in the chart. This is where Shahid Nazir is from in Pakistan,

:12:46. > :12:55.so let's see if his fame has spread here. Who better to ask than this

:12:55. > :13:02.fishmonger. Yes, he definitely knows him, and it seems the whole

:13:02. > :13:07.town does this well. In the market, we found shops blasting out the

:13:07. > :13:15.tune. It is obvious Shahid Nazir has become something of a local

:13:15. > :13:25.hero. On the street where he grow up, the children all wanted to show

:13:25. > :13:29.us they knew the song. His family have been shocked by what has

:13:29. > :13:34.happened. His wife and children are still here, excited he will be home

:13:34. > :13:39.to visit next week and they are willing him to get the Christmas

:13:39. > :13:43.number one first. If you think I am going to sing, you are wrong but

:13:43. > :13:52.there is no shortage of people wanting to in his family. Let me
