:00:09. > :00:15.Violence in Egypt, after 21 people are sentenced to death over the

:00:15. > :00:20.killing of football supporters at a match last year. At least 30 people

:00:20. > :00:23.are killed in clashes with the security forces.

:00:23. > :00:27.An investigation is launched, after a gun man dies while trying to rob

:00:27. > :00:30.a betting shop in Plymouth. Snow brings more disruption on the

:00:30. > :00:34.roads. But, as it thaws, forecasters warn of possible

:00:34. > :00:37.flooding. And, Luton become the first non-

:00:37. > :00:47.League team to beat top-flight opposition in the FA Cup for almost

:00:47. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :00:59.Good evening. 30 people are reported to have been

:00:59. > :01:02.killed in rioting in Egypt, after 21 defendants were sentenced to

:01:02. > :01:05.death for the country's worst ever football violence. Their

:01:05. > :01:09.convictions came after fighting at a match last year between a Port

:01:09. > :01:12.Said club, and a team from Cairo in which more than 70 people were

:01:12. > :01:22.killed. Our correspondent Aleem Maqbool has sent this report from

:01:22. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:34.the Egyptian capital. Whichever way this verdict went, it

:01:34. > :01:34.

:01:34. > :01:38.was going to reignite emotion. As the judge issued death sentences to

:01:38. > :01:41.each of the 21 people found guilty of murdering fans at the Al Ahly

:01:41. > :01:46.Football Club, there was joy and relief in the court house. But

:01:46. > :01:49.almost immediately, in Port Said, there was anger and violence. The

:01:49. > :01:59.families and supporters of the defendants who were from the city,

:01:59. > :02:02.attacked the police, and fought back. Hundreds are known to have

:02:02. > :02:08.been injured in the clashes, and a shocking number have been killed,

:02:08. > :02:18.including police officers. It was horrific violence in this city a

:02:18. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:22.year ago which started all this. At the end of a football match, home

:02:22. > :02:25.supporters attacked visiting Al Ahly fans who said they were

:02:25. > :02:29.blocked from getting out of the ground. Over 70 were stabbed,

:02:29. > :02:34.clubbed and kicked to death. In Cairo, outside the Al Ahly club now,

:02:34. > :02:41.people felt they had got justice. TRANSLATION: We witnessed death

:02:41. > :02:51.with our own eyes. Imagine if your friends go to watch a match and

:02:51. > :02:52.

:02:52. > :02:56.come back in a coffin. Thank God, now we are pleased.

:02:56. > :02:58.TRANSLATION: I am satisfied, but I think more people need to be

:02:58. > :03:06.sentenced to death, including the police officers who were involved.

:03:06. > :03:09.In the end, thousands gathered in their jubilation. There are huge

:03:09. > :03:13.celebrations here outside the Al Ahly club, now that fans have got

:03:13. > :03:16.the judgment they wanted. But a lot of these people have themselves

:03:16. > :03:24.threatened violence across the country, if things did not go their

:03:24. > :03:27.way. These scenes of joy in the capital are in marked contrast to

:03:27. > :03:33.the bloodshed there has been in Port Said today. As one of world

:03:33. > :03:36.football's darkest incidences continues to claim lives.

:03:36. > :03:40.Detectives in Plymouth are trying to establish how a man died while

:03:40. > :03:43.trying to rob a betting shop. Alan Levers had been pinned down by

:03:43. > :03:46.customers after he entered a branch of Ladbrokes, wearing a gas mask

:03:46. > :03:56.and holding a gun. Robert Hall's report contains some flash

:03:56. > :04:03.

:04:03. > :04:06.photography. Alongside a busy main road in the

:04:06. > :04:09.Plymouth suburbs, police have been piecing together the sequence of

:04:09. > :04:13.events which left a man dead and which brought emergency services to

:04:14. > :04:17.this betting shop yesterday evening. One question is whether CCTV inside

:04:17. > :04:20.the shop may have captured an incident which began when the man,

:04:20. > :04:24.armed with what appeared to be a handgun, burst into the bookies.

:04:24. > :04:34.His face, according to police, hidden by a gas mask. Investigators

:04:34. > :04:34.

:04:34. > :04:38.-- police have named the man allows a Alan Levers. And he was disarmed

:04:38. > :04:41.and pinned to the floor by quick- thinking customers. By the time the

:04:41. > :04:43.first response teams arrived, the man, in his fifties, was already

:04:43. > :04:47.unconscious. After calling an ambulance, police officers tried to

:04:47. > :04:57.revive him, but their efforts and those of the paramedics were to no

:04:57. > :05:01.

:05:02. > :05:06.avail. This appears to be an imitation pistol but it needs to be

:05:06. > :05:10.verified. I would like to add, however, there would have been no

:05:10. > :05:15.way of knowing this at the time of the incident. The actions taken by

:05:15. > :05:20.members of the public were brave, and showed a total disregard for

:05:20. > :05:26.their own safety. No one has been arrested or charged over the death,

:05:26. > :05:31.and legal experts say the customers who intervened probably will not be

:05:31. > :05:37.it -- prosecuted. It is extremely unlikely those people will face

:05:37. > :05:42.prosecution. They must have been in great fear. He was wearing a gas

:05:42. > :05:47.blast, they could not judge if he would have difficulty breathing.

:05:47. > :05:51.Tonight, as inquiries continue, police are appealing to anyone who

:05:51. > :05:55.can shed fresh light on this incident to come forward. In the

:05:55. > :06:05.meantime, senior police officers are stressing, as a matter of

:06:05. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:22.routine, evidence gathered will be passed to the Independent. --

:06:22. > :06:26.Police Complaints Commission. There's been more bad weather

:06:26. > :06:29.across large parts of the country, with heavy rain and melting snow

:06:29. > :06:32.making many roads treacherous. Last night, hundreds of people were

:06:32. > :06:35.stranded in their cars because of heavy snow across parts of Scotland,

:06:35. > :06:38.northern England and the Midlands. Stuart Flinders has more details.

:06:38. > :06:42.On the hills above Bradford, an early start for Darren Collet. He

:06:42. > :06:46.and his tractor were in big demand. How bad was it overnight, the snow,

:06:46. > :06:50.how quick did it come down? Within an hour and a half, 9.30pm, it was

:06:50. > :06:54.still snowing when I went to bed at 10.30pm. You were up at 5.30am

:06:54. > :06:59.clearing the snow? I got up at 4:30am, then set off to work. I

:06:59. > :07:03.went home in a tractor to make sure I could get to work. When the snow

:07:03. > :07:06.came, it was thick and fast, one foot in less than two hours in

:07:06. > :07:09.parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The M6 couldn't cope, the motorway

:07:09. > :07:12.closed in both directions near Wigan. Some drivers were stranded

:07:12. > :07:17.for hours. It is approximately 2am. The middle of the M6 motorway. As

:07:17. > :07:23.you can see, at the back of me, we have ground to a standstill. It is

:07:23. > :07:27.quite cold. We're in for the night. It is horrible, by the time I got

:07:27. > :07:31.to junction 25, it was at a standstill. There was no movement.

:07:31. > :07:34.As the snow and ice began to melt, a new danger, with river levels

:07:34. > :07:38.rising, the Environment Agency is warning serious floods are possible

:07:38. > :07:42.in many parts of England and Wales. The Environment Agency will be

:07:42. > :07:46.monitoring forever levels, a combination of the thought and

:07:46. > :07:48.heavy rain could cause serious floods. There is wet weather all

:07:48. > :07:51.over the country, flooded fields, localised flooding, high ground

:07:51. > :08:00.water, spring tides this week. A complete cocktail of issues and

:08:00. > :08:08.concerns to keep an eye on. There have been floods in parts of

:08:08. > :08:17.Carmarthenshire. The emergency services have dealt with 300 calls.

:08:17. > :08:20.The full impact may not be felt for another 24 hours.

:08:20. > :08:23.The Defence Ministry in Paris says French-led forces in Mali have made

:08:23. > :08:27.more advances against Islamists, who've been controlling large parts

:08:27. > :08:29.of the North of the country. Today, they took over the town of Gao, a

:08:29. > :08:36.major rebel stronghold. Our correspondent, Mark Doyle has been

:08:36. > :08:44.to Kona, the first town that was recaptured from the Islamists.

:08:44. > :08:47.Discarded Malian army uniforms litter the ground. When the

:08:47. > :08:50.Islamists invaded this first town in their push towards the capital,

:08:50. > :08:54.government soldiers put up a token fight, then ran. The counter-

:08:54. > :09:00.offensive was led by France. French jets screamed in. Their bombs lit

:09:01. > :09:10.up military vehicles. A heavy tank turret was tossed into the air like

:09:10. > :09:13.a toy. The pattern was there was a fight between the Malian government

:09:13. > :09:16.army, which had to flee because the Islamists had superior power. And

:09:16. > :09:20.then the French army intervened, from the air, attacking this place.

:09:20. > :09:28.A lot of these vehicles would have been destroyed by bombs from the

:09:28. > :09:31.helicopters or jet fighters. The Malian army have returned, and are

:09:31. > :09:40.proudly showing they have retaken this town, but only because of the

:09:40. > :09:43.French. This Malian lieutenant agrees. It was thanks to the French

:09:43. > :09:47.we retook his place, he says, and thanks to them, will take others.

:09:47. > :09:55.Amid the carnage, a small miracle. This taxi driver was saved by his

:09:55. > :09:58.fridge. He was caught in the short fire fight between Islamists and

:09:58. > :10:08.the Malian army. The bullets lost power, as they came through the

:10:08. > :10:10.

:10:10. > :10:17.freezer section. TRANSLATION: I was shot through the nose, if the

:10:17. > :10:21.fridge wasn't here, I would almost certainly have been killed.

:10:21. > :10:25.Time to go. The Malian army present once more, but tensions are still

:10:25. > :10:28.high. We weren't welcome for long. Thousands of people have taken part

:10:28. > :10:31.in a demonstration against plans to close a major Accident and

:10:31. > :10:34.Emergency unit at a hospital in south east London. Under the

:10:34. > :10:37.proposals, Lewisham Hospital would see its A&E and maternity units

:10:37. > :10:45.downgraded. It's part of a re- organisation aimed at rescuing a

:10:45. > :10:48.neighbouring health trust which has been put into administration.

:10:48. > :10:51.The Transport Secretary has come under criticism from within his own

:10:51. > :10:54.party, after he told a newspaper that the economic benefits of

:10:54. > :10:57.building a high-speed rail link from London to the north of England

:10:57. > :11:03.was "worth the upset it would cause". Patrick McLoughlin is

:11:03. > :11:06.expected to unveil plans to extend the line on Monday.

:11:06. > :11:09.The government says it will spend another 21 million on humanitarian

:11:10. > :11:12.aid for victims of the conflict in Syria. The announcement was made by

:11:12. > :11:15.the International Development Secretary Justine Greening on a

:11:15. > :11:18.visit to Jordan today. The UN says more than 670,000 Syrians have now

:11:18. > :11:22.fled the country. 6,000 have arrived at the Za'atari refugee

:11:22. > :11:32.camp in the last two days alone. From there, Rami Ruhay-em sent this

:11:32. > :11:42.

:11:42. > :11:47.A welcome break from the monotony at this refugee camp. Justine

:11:47. > :11:52.Greening takes a tour, makes a new pledge of British aid and urges

:11:52. > :11:56.others to joint. Winnie the international community to step up

:11:56. > :12:00.to the plate, warm words will not help these people, they need

:12:00. > :12:05.humanitarian money to help give them food, shelter and medical

:12:05. > :12:09.assistance. The new aid package will be split between those

:12:09. > :12:14.displaced within Syria, and refugees in neighbouring countries,

:12:14. > :12:19.with Jordan perceiving 10 million. Thankful for what they're getting,

:12:19. > :12:24.refugees are painfully aware of what they still need. TRANSLATION:

:12:24. > :12:30.We are very grateful to everyone who has helped Syrian refugees, but

:12:30. > :12:35.we haven't seen any of it. It is just talking the media. This camp

:12:35. > :12:38.has expanded into a large city. Every day, thousands of Syrian

:12:38. > :12:44.refugees arrived in Jordan. Every penny of aid is needed to provide

:12:44. > :12:50.for them. The United Nations says it needs half a billion dollars. It

:12:50. > :12:55.is not getting any easier. As long as the fighting drugs on in Syria,

:12:55. > :13:02.many more will escape death only to find destitution on the other side.

:13:02. > :13:06.And they will need all the help they can get.

:13:06. > :13:14.Sport now. For a full round-up of all the day's action, it's over to

:13:14. > :13:17.Olly Foster at the BBC Sport Centre. Good evening. We'll start with

:13:17. > :13:20.football, because we've had a big upset in the FA Cup. Luton Town

:13:20. > :13:23.have knocked out Premier League Norwich City, becoming the first

:13:23. > :13:26.non-League team to beat top division opposition since Sutton

:13:26. > :13:29.United beat Coventry back in 1989. Elsewhere, there were wins for

:13:29. > :13:35.Manchester United and Manchester City. Rob Heath reports, starting

:13:35. > :13:40.with the shock at Carrow Road. Luton Town have had few reasons to

:13:40. > :13:45.celebrate. Relegation from the Football League in 2090 following

:13:45. > :13:50.the natural irregularities was the low point. Now, a reminder of past

:13:50. > :13:55.glories, this must have felt like a cup final when. Who knows just how

:13:55. > :14:01.far they can go? For all their recent silverware, it is nine years

:14:01. > :14:05.since Manchester United last won the FA Cup. Fulham arrived at Old

:14:05. > :14:12.Trafford having won just twice in the 37 visits. Since then, they

:14:12. > :14:16.have generally surrendered. This time, they did so literally, Aaron

:14:16. > :14:21.Hughes here. United have been strangely off-target with penalties

:14:21. > :14:25.this season. Ryan Giggs showed how it should be done. The home side

:14:25. > :14:31.could have scored a hat-trick by half-time. They made up for after

:14:31. > :14:37.the break, with Wayne Rooney. Fulham allowed United to play and

:14:37. > :14:42.when that happens there is only one outcome. Another two more. United

:14:42. > :14:52.eventually ran out 4-1 winners. Their Manchester rivals are also

:14:52. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :14:59.through, leaving it late to beat Here are the other nine fourth

:14:59. > :15:00.round ties today. Everton and Arsenal needed late goals to get

:15:00. > :15:02.through. Huddersfield against Leicester is

:15:03. > :15:05.the only match that will need to be replayed.

:15:05. > :15:08.Non-League Macclesfield lost 1-0 to Wigan.

:15:08. > :15:14.The Premier League's bottom side, Queens Park Rangers, were humbled

:15:14. > :15:18.Hearts are into the Scottish League Cup final, after beating Inverness

:15:18. > :15:21.on penalties. It was 1-1 after extra time, and Hearts won 5-4 on

:15:21. > :15:25.spot kicks, They'll face either St Mirren or Celtic in the final.

:15:25. > :15:28.In the SPL, Ross County earned a valuable point at Dundee United. A

:15:28. > :15:33.stunning late equaliser by Richard Brittain at Tannadice saw them move

:15:33. > :15:36.The world number one Victoria Azarenka has won back-to-back

:15:36. > :15:39.Australian Open titles, after beating Li Na in three sets. And

:15:39. > :15:47.attention now turns to the men's final tomorrow, with Andy Murray

:15:47. > :15:52.facing Novak Djokovic. Andy Swiss reports from Melbourne.

:15:53. > :15:59.Finals don't get much crazier or more compelling. Crowd favourite Li

:15:59. > :16:06.Na powers to the first set. Before a dramatic twist, harp and Kohl

:16:06. > :16:11.went and so, it seemed, did her chances. After a 10 minute stoppage

:16:11. > :16:15.for Australia Day fireworks, another injury, to her head. She

:16:15. > :16:21.was tested for concussion but to the crowd's delight, she battled on

:16:21. > :16:26.and pushed her opponent all the way. It wasn't quite enough. Victoria

:16:26. > :16:30.Azarenka ultimately winning the title. Tomorrow, it's the men's and

:16:30. > :16:35.turn on centre stage which means Andy Murray, he has twice lost in

:16:35. > :16:39.the final here. This time he is a very different player. As Roger

:16:39. > :16:43.Federer discovered yesterday, Andy Murray has never looked stronger.

:16:43. > :16:49.He could soon follow his first Grand Slam title by winning a

:16:49. > :16:53.second, something no man has done for half a century. If I was to

:16:53. > :16:57.manage to do it, I'm sure it would be a great achievement. It is a

:16:57. > :17:02.hard thing to do. I know how nervous I was there for the first

:17:02. > :17:06.match here, there is extra pressure. He still has to beat Novak Djokovic.

:17:06. > :17:09.He did it famously in New York. If he can do it again, British tennis

:17:09. > :17:14.could be in for another night to remember.

:17:14. > :17:17.The mens' final will be on BBC One tomorrow morning from 8.15am.

:17:17. > :17:20.What a week it's been for England's netballers, after completing a

:17:20. > :17:23.series whitewash over Australia. They beat the world champions 58-51

:17:23. > :17:29.in the third and final Test in Birmingham. Before this series,

:17:29. > :17:32.they'd only beaten Australia twice. Russia won the International

:17:32. > :17:36.Athletics Match at Glasgow's brand new Indoor Arena today. But Dwain

:17:36. > :17:39.Chambers was one of the few British winners, finishing first in the 60

:17:39. > :17:49.metres, in his first outing of the season. Former 100 metre world

:17:49. > :17:50.

:17:50. > :17:53.champion Kim Collins was second. Just time to tell you that the

:17:53. > :17:57.Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, is among the guests on the Andrew

:17:57. > :18:07.Marr Show tomorrow at 9am. Because of the tennis, it's on BBC Two.

:18:07. > :18:15.

:18:15. > :18:19.The milder air moved into day. We will find the thought continues

:18:20. > :18:26.overnight as rain pushers East. We have a few thunderstorms in the

:18:26. > :18:33.west which will push east end the next couple of hours as the

:18:33. > :18:37.blustery winds push it along. In the east, temperatures will rise as

:18:37. > :18:42.the rainbow's end. Temperatures will dip at the end of the night in

:18:42. > :18:45.Scotland and Northern Ireland. Tomorrow morning, a good deal of

:18:46. > :18:54.sunshine. Showers will come in from the west especially in the

:18:54. > :18:59.afternoon, some heavy. Not that many showers in northern England.

:18:59. > :19:03.We will see quite a few showers pushing east across Scotland, some

:19:03. > :19:09.heavy with thunder, some sleet and snow over the hills. A similar

:19:09. > :19:15.mixture of sunshine and showers across Northern Ireland. In Wales,

:19:15. > :19:23.showers in the south of the country. They will get going in the
