:00:05. > :00:09.More signs of opposition within the Conservative Party to the Prime

:00:09. > :00:12.Minister's plans on gay marriage. More than 20 Conservative

:00:12. > :00:20.associations call for this week's parliamentary vote to be delayed -

:00:20. > :00:23.saying it'll cost votes at the next election. The 20-year-old London

:00:23. > :00:28.woman whose life was forever changed by an acid attack as she

:00:28. > :00:37.stepped off a bus. The moment a man carrying knives was disarmed

:00:37. > :00:40.outside Buckingham Palace by police with a Taser gun. And in sport, a

:00:40. > :00:50.touch of genius from Manchester City, but it's only good enough for

:00:50. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:02.Good evening. David Cameron is facing a challenge from within the

:01:02. > :01:04.Conservative Party to plans for Parliament to vote on gay marriage.

:01:04. > :01:07.A delegation from more than 20 local Conservative associations has

:01:07. > :01:13.delivered a letter to Downing Street, saying that gay marriage

:01:13. > :01:15.will cause the party significant damage at the 2015 election. MPs

:01:15. > :01:25.vote on the issue on Tuesday. Our political correspondent Carole

:01:25. > :01:26.

:01:26. > :01:30.Walker has the details. They came from the shires on a Sunday

:01:30. > :01:34.afternoon to deliver their protest to Downing Street. These are some

:01:34. > :01:38.of the 25 senior Conservatives who are warning David Cameron that a

:01:38. > :01:43.significant number in his party will not support what they see as

:01:43. > :01:48.an attempt to redefine marriage. is not a matter of being anti-gay.

:01:48. > :01:52.It is a matter of considering what is the institution of marriage

:01:52. > :01:57.about and for many people, and certainly older Conservatives, as

:01:57. > :02:04.well as young Conservatives, Mage has been a matter between a man and

:02:04. > :02:09.a woman, bringing up if they're lucky, children. Their letter says

:02:09. > :02:13.there is no mandate for the bill and it is being rushed through and

:02:14. > :02:18.it says resignations from the party are beginning to multiply and we

:02:18. > :02:21.fear this bill will lead to significant damage to the

:02:21. > :02:25.Conservative Party in the run-up to the 2015 election. Downing Street

:02:25. > :02:29.say there is no question of Prime Minister backing down. It is a free

:02:29. > :02:34.vote and he accepts many MPs and even some cabinet ministers will

:02:34. > :02:41.not support it. But he believes it is time to give gay teem e people

:02:41. > :02:44.the same right as everyone else. it rights in principle, I think it

:02:44. > :02:50.is, marriage is a positive institution and we shouldn't deny

:02:50. > :02:56.it to people. There is public consents for it to be a law? Yes.

:02:56. > :02:59.There is. Many Tories want the Prime Minister to do nor support

:02:59. > :03:05.traditional marriages and resentment has been fumed by the

:03:05. > :03:10.decision not to introduce tax break four married couples in the budget.

:03:10. > :03:15.The bill to allow gay couples to marry is likely to get the go ahead

:03:15. > :03:19.on Tuesday. But it could face a difficult passage through

:03:19. > :03:25.Parliament, which will put further strains on the relationship between

:03:25. > :03:29.the Prime Minister and his party. A 20-year-old woman from East London

:03:29. > :03:32.who was disfigured in an acid attack on her way home from work

:03:32. > :03:35.has been speaking to the BBC about her ordeal. In her first television

:03:35. > :03:41.interview, Naomi Oni said that when she saw her face for the first time

:03:41. > :03:44.after the attack she didn't want to live. This report from Ben Ando.

:03:44. > :03:51.This was 20- year-old Naomi Oni before the attack that changed her

:03:51. > :03:54.life forever. There was droplets on my arm. Naomi suffered horrific

:03:54. > :03:58.burns just over a month ago when acid was thrown at her by an

:03:58. > :04:05.unknown attacker dressed in a Burkha. She was rushed to hospital

:04:05. > :04:13.and recalls the moment she saw her injuries in a mirror. My eyes were

:04:13. > :04:17.swollen. I was terrified. My vision was cutting out as well. I thought

:04:17. > :04:27.I was going to go blind. I was terrified. I didn't want to want to

:04:27. > :04:30.

:04:30. > :04:33.live after I saw my face. Naomi worked in a shopping mall. She has

:04:33. > :04:40.no idea why somebody would want to inflict such horrific injuries. It

:04:40. > :04:43.burnt quite a bit of my ear. not deaf, I'm not blind and I can

:04:43. > :04:47.eat, I can drink, I can talk. That is just like that person failed -

:04:47. > :04:55.whatever their aim was, they failed and God has given me a life for a

:04:55. > :04:58.reason. That's what keeps me going. Now Naomi says she is determined to

:04:58. > :05:01.stay positive and is hoping that giving this interview will prompt

:05:01. > :05:09.someone to contact the police, though so far no one has been

:05:09. > :05:11.arrested. The Prime Minister is meeting the Afghan and Pakistani

:05:11. > :05:16.presidents tonight for talks on what happens in Afghanistan after

:05:16. > :05:18.foreign troops withdraw next year. The hope is to prevent a Taliban

:05:18. > :05:21.resurgence, but the relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan

:05:21. > :05:27.will be crucial, especially along their notoriously lawless shared

:05:27. > :05:34.border. We have reports from correspondents on both sides of

:05:34. > :05:42.that border. In a moment Quentin Somerville from Afghanistan, but

:05:42. > :05:47.first Orla Guerin on Pakistan's role. Dangerous terrain. The border

:05:48. > :05:49.region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Hidden from view there

:05:49. > :05:55.are militant strongholds, some allegedly have Islamabad's

:05:55. > :06:03.protection. When NATO troops go, controlling this front line will be

:06:03. > :06:09.up to Pakistan and its wary neighbour. But first it needs the

:06:09. > :06:14.trust of the region and the west. And here in Islamabad, the

:06:14. > :06:17.Government has started building that trust. It has taken concrete

:06:17. > :06:22.steps by freeing some Afghan Taliban prisoners. More releases

:06:22. > :06:28.are expected soon. The hope is the returning Taliban can persuade

:06:28. > :06:34.their leaderships to move from fighting to talking. If that fails,

:06:34. > :06:38.there could be more chaos on both sides of the fabled Khyber Pass.

:06:38. > :06:48.Pakistan fears being left alone to pick up the pieces as it was in

:06:48. > :06:49.

:06:49. > :06:51.1989 when the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan. $YELLOW When relations

:06:51. > :06:59.with Pakistan hit rock bottom, this essential supply route into

:06:59. > :07:05.Afghanistan closed. The trucks are moving here again. The routes have

:07:05. > :07:08.reopened and on this side of the border. There is a growing sense of

:07:08. > :07:11.optimism that Pakistan by releasing a number of Taliban leaders from

:07:11. > :07:13.prison may be able to play a constructive role in bring

:07:13. > :07:18.participants to the negotiating table and getting the peace process

:07:18. > :07:23.moving. In the Afghan capital and beyond, the focus is turning to the

:07:23. > :07:26.legacy that the international mission leaves behind. As in

:07:26. > :07:29.Islamabad, the sense here in Kabul is that the clock is ticking.

:07:29. > :07:34.President Karzai is scheduled to leave office in a year's time.

:07:34. > :07:36.Foreign troops won't be far behind him. And in the words of one senior

:07:36. > :07:42.western diplomat, there is a moment of opportunity for Afghanistan and

:07:42. > :07:51.Pakistan to work together for peace. Britain's role is to host these two

:07:51. > :07:53.nations whose future prospects remain joined together. It's

:07:53. > :07:55.emerged that another senior director at Barclays Bank is

:07:55. > :07:58.stepping down. Finance Director Chris Lucas, who's expected to

:07:58. > :08:01.leave in a matter of days. His decision to retire comes as the

:08:01. > :08:10.bank attempts to move on after last year's rate-fixing scandal. Our

:08:10. > :08:14.Business Correspondent Philip Hampsheir is with me now. How

:08:14. > :08:19.significant is this? Chris Lucas has been at the bank for six years

:08:19. > :08:23.now. So a long time. But he is one of the last set of four people who

:08:23. > :08:30.were at the top of the bank during the difficult times last summer. We

:08:31. > :08:37.have seen two step down. We have seen the former Chief Executive

:08:37. > :08:41.officer go as well. He was the last one at that big four set. The bank

:08:41. > :08:45.is under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office and the

:08:45. > :08:50.financial services authority with regard to how it managed to avoid

:08:50. > :08:53.having the British Government buy a stake in it. Barclays is keen to

:08:53. > :08:58.point out there is no relation between that investigation and the

:08:58. > :09:01.fact he has chosen to step down now. Thank you. Very much. French

:09:01. > :09:06.warplanes have bombarded Islamist bases in northern Mali as they try

:09:06. > :09:09.to secure a town which is the rebels' last stronghold. The air

:09:09. > :09:12.strike came just a few hours after a triumphant visit by the French

:09:12. > :09:15.president to Timbuktu - the most prominent area freed by his troops

:09:15. > :09:18.from Islamist control. Our Africa correspondent Andrew Harding is in

:09:18. > :09:28.Timbuktu now and reports on the tensions and divisions still in

:09:28. > :09:31.

:09:31. > :09:38.evidence. Life and colour are returning to this desert town.

:09:38. > :09:43.Schools are finally open once again. The Islamist militants who occupied

:09:43. > :09:47.Timbuktu imposed strict rules for girls and then stop all lessons.

:09:48. > :09:53.There is plenty to clear up. The militants have tried to destroy

:09:53. > :09:58.past, burning some priceless manuscripts and smashing ancient

:09:58. > :10:06.shrines. Paining over anything that offended them that. Included the

:10:06. > :10:10.faces outside the hair dressing Sallon. They arrested me for

:10:10. > :10:16.shaving someone's beard off, he says. They beat people on the

:10:16. > :10:24.street. I hope they never come back. But tensions remain and this man

:10:24. > :10:29.showed me the neighbourhood and dozens of looted shops that were

:10:29. > :10:34.owned by light skinned people, accused of being Al-Qaeda

:10:34. > :10:42.sympathisers. They were all working with them he said. They hid weapon

:10:42. > :10:45.upon -- weapons for the enemies. It is a sign of the rivalry still

:10:45. > :10:54.threatening Mali. Timbuktu's leaders seem confident the worst is

:10:54. > :11:00.over. We will have elections soon, says the town's mayor and a

:11:00. > :11:06.transparent who must live together, negotiate and rebuild our country.

:11:06. > :11:11.The French are still here to help out, but they're working on an exit

:11:11. > :11:15.strategy. Before long, Mali's own ill-disciplined security forces

:11:15. > :11:20.will be expected to take a role in keeping the peace here in Timbuktu

:11:20. > :11:28.and preventing Al-Qaeda and its allys from storming back into town.

:11:28. > :11:34.That is asking a lot of these soldiers. On the outskirts of town,

:11:34. > :11:38.Mali's airm stands on guard. Deeper in the desert to the north, the war

:11:38. > :11:41.goes on. The Birmingham hospital treating Malala Yousafzai - the

:11:41. > :11:43.Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban - says she is making good

:11:43. > :11:45.progress after major surgery yesterday. During the five-hour

:11:45. > :11:53.operation surgeons attached a titanium plate to her skull and

:11:53. > :11:56.implanted a device to help her hearing. Police outside Buckingham

:11:56. > :12:01.Palace have used a Taser stun gun to disarm a man who was carrying

:12:01. > :12:04.two knives. Crowds of tourists watched as the man held a large

:12:04. > :12:09.blade to his throat and then challenged police who approached

:12:09. > :12:14.him. Richard Lister reports. Noon at Buckingham Palace and a crowd's

:12:14. > :12:19.gathered for the changing of the guard. All eyes though are on this

:12:19. > :12:23.man who is bradishing two large kitchen knives. The police surround

:12:23. > :12:31.him as he holds a blade to his neck. They challenge him and one officer

:12:31. > :12:34.circled behind him with a Taser. He fires. The man then appeared to

:12:34. > :12:37.approach him before falling to the ground. The electric shock leaves

:12:37. > :12:43.the man stunned and officers disarm before taking him away. One

:12:43. > :12:48.bystander said it all seemed to be over very quickly. They surrounded

:12:48. > :12:51.him and then one come up behind him and Tasered him. He fell to the

:12:51. > :12:56.ground within a couple of seconds and he got taken away in the police

:12:56. > :12:59.van. Buckingham Palace says the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh

:12:59. > :13:03.were in Sandringham at the time. It hasn't issued any comment on the

:13:03. > :13:08.incident. The knives and the man's hat were visible behind the police

:13:08. > :13:15.cordon, as were the beads he was holding. Scotland Yard say he is

:13:15. > :13:17.now being held at a police station in central London. The Egyptian

:13:17. > :13:20.Government has apologised after shocking footage of a man being

:13:20. > :13:23.beaten by police outside the presidential palace was broadcast

:13:23. > :13:26.on state television. The images proved to be a particular

:13:26. > :13:28.flashpoint amid days of protest against President Mursi. Our

:13:28. > :13:38.correspondent Aleem Maqbool went to find his family. His report starts

:13:38. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:45.with that controversial footage. It is a video that has called

:13:45. > :13:49.revulsion here. The sight of a man apparently being stripped, beaten

:13:49. > :13:54.and dragged along the road by police. It was during a protest

:13:55. > :14:00.close to the Presidential Palace and it has come to similar pollise

:14:00. > :14:04.hatred for the president. The victim is being treated in a police

:14:04. > :14:11.hospital. But when we found his family, they told us they had been

:14:11. > :14:15.left devastated by the hue mill kpwraigs. -- mew milliation.

:14:15. > :14:20.TRANSLATION: Everyone knows what happened to my father. I spoke to

:14:20. > :14:24.him on the phone. He was crying and scared. He is such a simple man. He

:14:25. > :14:29.just went to watch. I can't forgive them for treating him like an

:14:29. > :14:33.animal. But strangely fr, his hospital bed, the man appeared on

:14:33. > :14:40.television, saying he is fine and that it was opposition protesters

:14:40. > :14:45.that beat him. And that the police rescued him. We went to the

:14:46. > :14:50.hospital ourselves with his son. Though we wernt aloud in -- weren't

:14:50. > :14:54.aloud in, he was was. After he understood why his father appeared

:14:54. > :14:59.to have lied on TV. TRANSLATION: My father told me the police put

:14:59. > :15:04.pressure on him. They told him if he opens his moufrtd, they would

:15:04. > :15:09.plant Molotov cock toils -- mouth, they would plant Molotov cocktail

:15:09. > :15:15.and say he was carrying them. is where the man was stripped and

:15:15. > :15:19.beaten. It has caused shock among Egyptians. And it is incidents like

:15:19. > :15:26.these that make a lot of people here feel they still need to fight

:15:26. > :15:31.for real change in Egypt. Sport now and for a full round up of all the

:15:31. > :15:37.day's action, here's Olly Foster at the BBC Sport Centre. Thank you. We

:15:37. > :15:43.have had some stunning goals in the Premier League today. Gareth Bale

:15:43. > :15:48.scored the win for Tottenham at WBA and Manchester City could only draw

:15:48. > :15:56.with Liverpool. Many will miss Manchester City's striker Mario

:15:56. > :16:06.Balotelli. The manager chose not to replace him and his faith in his

:16:06. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:11.strikers was rewarded when Dzeko scored. But their former player

:16:11. > :16:17.Sturridge did the damage. If that was spectacular it was nothing

:16:17. > :16:21.compared to Liverpool's second. Steven Gerard has scored some

:16:21. > :16:27.memorable goals. He won't forget this one for a while. If Liverpool

:16:27. > :16:37.thought they would see their team beat a table from the top of the of

:16:37. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:43.the season -- table, they were wrong. But Aguero scored this goal.

:16:43. > :16:47.The draw leaves City trailing Manchester United by nine points.

:16:47. > :16:57.Earlier, West Brom's hopes of getting anything from their match

:16:57. > :17:02.at home to Tottenham evaporated when Popov spat at Kyle Walker.

:17:02. > :17:07.Then they got a goal and Spurs boosted their chances of the

:17:07. > :17:12.Champions League. There has been an upset in the Six Nations. Italy

:17:12. > :17:18.have beaten France in Rome. It was a tight game but this try saw Italy

:17:18. > :17:24.edge in front in the second half. A late drop goal saw them win 23-18

:17:24. > :17:29.and cue celebrations. Italy play Scotland in Edinburgh next weekend.

:17:29. > :17:35.A brilliant century from Charlotte Edwards helped England beat India

:17:35. > :17:39.in the cricket World Cup. Her 109 also saw her become the leading

:17:39. > :17:43.scorer in one day internationals. In need of a cuddle? Well England

:17:43. > :17:49.probably were after that shock opening loss to Sri Lanka. But in

:17:49. > :17:53.this match, they had a mascot and a record-breaker. Charlotte Edwards

:17:53. > :17:59.the captain became the leading international one day run scorer.

:17:59. > :18:09.And the runs kept coming and so did the boundaries and soon the century.

:18:09. > :18:10.

:18:10. > :18:19.Edwards was run out, but the damage had been done. A hefty 273 India's

:18:19. > :18:24.target and England tore through their top order. Nothing weak about

:18:24. > :18:34.England's knight in shining armour, Heather Knight with a stunning

:18:34. > :18:34.

:18:34. > :18:42.piece of fielding. And the wickets kept falling. India lost by 32 runs.

:18:42. > :18:52.A fine day's work for England. Their mascot and the captain.

:18:52. > :18:57.Steefren Gallagher is celebrating a rare win on the European tour. He

:18:57. > :19:02.won the Dubai Desert Classic, thanks to this eagle on 16th. It is
