:00:23. > :00:27.The way the UK's migration statistics are gathered is not fit

:00:27. > :00:30.for purpose, according to a group of MPs. The Public Administration

:00:30. > :00:35.Select Committee said the figures were based on too small a sample and

:00:35. > :00:43.were little better than guesswork. The Home Office said it disagreed

:00:43. > :00:46.with the report's conclusions. Tom Barton has more.

:00:46. > :00:53.Knowing how many people are coming to live in Britain and are moving

:00:53. > :00:56.abroad is important if officials are going to make informed decisions. It

:00:56. > :01:02.is also important politically. Immigration is one of the issues

:01:02. > :01:03.many people say they care most about. But today a report from the

:01:03. > :01:08.Public Administration Select Committee says the immigration

:01:08. > :01:14.statistics just aren't reliable enough. In the 12 months to June of

:01:14. > :01:20.last year, the government estimates that 515,000 British, EU and non-EU

:01:20. > :01:29.nationals entered the country. 352,000 any great it. That would put

:01:29. > :01:35.the net migration figure at 163,000. But because both figures are

:01:36. > :01:39.estimates, the number could be 35,000 higher or lower. Bearing in

:01:39. > :01:45.mind the political priority in which the public place on this, we need

:01:45. > :01:49.robust data to be collected. We need the home of this information to be

:01:49. > :01:52.compared with the Office for National Statistics and EU borders.

:01:52. > :01:57.That is not being done. The Home Office says it rejects the

:01:57. > :02:00.conclusions of the report, saying the government 's immigration

:02:00. > :02:04.reforms are working and that net migration is at its close level for

:02:04. > :02:11.a decade. But the Lib Dem Business Secretary thinks focusing on net

:02:11. > :02:14.migration is a red herring. This idea that you are pursuing a net

:02:14. > :02:19.immigration figure is misleading. Among other things, the largest

:02:19. > :02:22.number of people counted as immigrants are students, who are not

:02:22. > :02:31.immigrants, they are visitors. Coalition row is also bring over

:02:31. > :02:35.this code -- poster campaign. The Lib Dems have called it this

:02:35. > :02:38.tasteful and divisive. The Home Office says it simply offers support

:02:38. > :02:41.to people who want to help leaving Britain.

:02:41. > :02:44.In Egypt, supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi have defied

:02:44. > :02:51.threats of removal from their sit-in protest in Cairo despite clashes

:02:51. > :02:54.with security forces on Saturday which left at least 72 people dead.

:02:54. > :03:04.But, as Jim Muir reports from Cairo, the interior minister has warned

:03:04. > :03:06.

:03:06. > :03:11.them they will soon be dispersed. It is still there. Many thousands of

:03:11. > :03:15.Morsi loyalists, some of them still with their families, camping around

:03:15. > :03:19.the clock, keeping up their demand for his reinstatement. There's a lot

:03:20. > :03:28.of anger here about the killings. It's a convict massacre. We are

:03:28. > :03:34.peaceful. Yesterday there was a massacre during 2am. These people

:03:34. > :03:39.are peaceful. At the core of the protest is the

:03:39. > :03:44.Muslim Brotherhood, the movement to which Mohamed Morsi belongs. It is

:03:44. > :03:51.an influential party that goes back more than 85 years. It is TPM bedded

:03:51. > :03:55.in Egyptian society. -- DPM bedded. It can get hundreds of thousands of

:03:56. > :03:59.supporters on the streets. It did that on Friday, to show that it

:03:59. > :04:05.should have mass support. That was to counter a huge rally called by

:04:05. > :04:09.the commander of the Army, no defence minister. He wanted a

:04:09. > :04:14.display of public backing for what he calls his drive against

:04:14. > :04:19.terrorism. There were fears it could herald a crackdown on the Muslim

:04:19. > :04:22.Brotherhood. But the deadly violence at the

:04:22. > :04:27.mosque yesterday did not turn out to be the serious effort to overrun the

:04:27. > :04:34.area taken over by manic Morsi 's followers. That may still be to

:04:34. > :04:37.come. -- Mohamed Morsi 's followers. With international and domestic

:04:37. > :04:43.concern at the carnage of mounting, the interim government here will

:04:43. > :04:46.think twice about launching a concerted attack.

:04:46. > :04:49.British soldiers have been sent on a secret mission to help the Afghan

:04:49. > :04:53.army clear Taliban militants from an area of Sangin Province in southern

:04:53. > :04:59.Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence says about 80 members of fourth

:04:59. > :05:02.Battalion, the Rifles, were sent to the region earlier this month. All

:05:02. > :05:05.returned safely to their base at Camp Bastion.

:05:05. > :05:10.The Home Secretary has revealed that she's been diagnosed with Type one

:05:10. > :05:14.diabetes. Theresa May told the Mail on Sunday that she has to treat the

:05:14. > :05:17.condition by injecting herself twice a day with insulin. She said that

:05:17. > :05:21.the diagnosis two months ago had come as a shock, but hadn't affected

:05:21. > :05:25.the way she did her job. And Pope Francis has urged pilgrims

:05:25. > :05:28.to work hard as athletes for Christ. Speaking to crowds of up to three

:05:28. > :05:32.million people during a vigil on Copacabana beach, in the Brazilian

:05:32. > :05:35.city of Rio de Janeiro, he called on young people to help rebuild the

:05:35. > :05:40.Roman Catholic Church, which has lost millions of followers in Latin

:05:40. > :05:50.America. That's it from me. There'll be more

:05:50. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:03.from the newsroom at 6.35 on BBC Good afternoon. If there were any

:06:03. > :06:10.doubt that our long dry spell had come to an end, most of those doubts

:06:10. > :06:13.have been washed away. Many places saw a lot of rain overnight. There

:06:13. > :06:20.will be some further heavy downpours this afternoon. But some sunshine as

:06:20. > :06:24.well. A big area of low pressure is in charge of the scene. To the west,

:06:24. > :06:27.it is this area that has been working north across the country and

:06:27. > :06:30.bringing the rain. It is going to keep raining in the north-east of

:06:30. > :06:35.Scotland for the rest of this afternoon. Some strong winds as

:06:35. > :06:40.well. Drying up for southern areas of Scotland. For everywhere else,

:06:40. > :06:45.yes, there will be some spells of sunshine, but also some showers.

:06:45. > :06:51.Some of them are heavy as well. There could be some mumbles of

:06:51. > :06:54.thunder. Temperatures are perhaps up to 24 or 25 degrees. Tonight, the

:06:54. > :07:00.rain in the North will get its act together and clear away to the

:07:01. > :07:05.North. There will be some clear spells. A fair few showers, though,

:07:05. > :07:09.rattling on behind. Temperatures between 13 and 17 degrees. Tomorrow

:07:09. > :07:13.is a day of sunshine and showers. Low pressure is still in charge.

:07:13. > :07:18.This is the weather front coming in from the west, which will enhance

:07:18. > :07:22.the showers. Some of them will be quite heavy. There will be some

:07:22. > :07:25.sunshine in between. This is how the day pans out. You can see a rash of

:07:25. > :07:32.showers across the country. Where we get the showers, they could be

:07:32. > :07:37.heavy. A fairly breezy day, and a bit cooler than of late as well. The

:07:37. > :07:41.week ahead brings plenty of different types of weather, really.

:07:41. > :07:44.Some rain at times, also some sunshine and a chance that was the

:07:44. > :07:50.end of the week things might turn warmer, even hot perhaps a cross

:07:50. > :07:56.parts of the South. Tuesday start with high pressure, making things

:07:56. > :08:04.try first of all. Then a weather front moves in from the south. That

:08:04. > :08:10.will bring some rain, some of it heavy. Sharp showers to the north.

:08:10. > :08:13.In between, a zone of largely dry weather. The meandering weather

:08:13. > :08:16.front continues to work its way through as we head on into the

:08:16. > :08:23.middle part of the week. On Wednesday, a belt of rain moves

:08:23. > :08:29.north. It is likely to fizzle away as it goes. It could turn quite

:08:29. > :08:33.humid by this stage across the South. This meandering front

:08:33. > :08:39.continues its progress north as we head into Thursday, taking the rain

:08:39. > :08:44.north with it. It is a warm front, and behind it some warm air that is

:08:44. > :08:48.going to try to come in across the country. Moving in from the

:08:48. > :08:53.continent, it could live temperatures in the south east into

:08:53. > :08:57.the low 30s as we go into Thursday. Hot sunshine here. Further west and

:08:57. > :09:04.north, where we had the weather front, there will be some rain, some

:09:04. > :09:07.of it heavy. There is confirmation of the temperatures. We head into

:09:07. > :09:13.Friday still with low pressure in charge, but a chance that we could

:09:13. > :09:16.see an area of thundery downpours pushing somewhere across England.
