:00:09. > :00:13.A tax break for some married couples and more help for aspiring home

:00:13. > :00:15.owners, pledges from the Conservatives ahead of their annual

:00:15. > :00:18.party conference. But will David Cameron convince sceptical voters

:00:18. > :00:24.and his own backbenchers that he is on the side of hardworking families?

:00:24. > :00:27.And in Greece, an unprecedented crackdown on the far-right Golden

:00:27. > :00:33.Dawn party as its leader and four other MPs are arrested.

:00:33. > :00:34.A vigil in Nairobi for the victims of the Kenyan shopping centre siege,

:00:34. > :01:01.as a sixth Briton is confirmed dead. Good evening. David Cameron has

:01:01. > :01:03.arrived in Manchester, ahead of the start of the Conservatives' annual

:01:03. > :01:05.conference, amid policy announcements including a tax break

:01:06. > :01:08.for some married couples, and the early introduction of a

:01:08. > :01:16.controversial scheme to help aspiring home buyers. As Ian Watson

:01:16. > :01:20.reports, his over-riding message over the next few days is expected

:01:20. > :01:28.to be that the economy is improving, so "let us finish the job."

:01:28. > :01:32.David Cameron was well protected from voters as he swept into the

:01:32. > :01:36.secure zone around his party conference. But his task is to reach

:01:36. > :01:41.out to hard-working families and tell them he is in touch with their

:01:41. > :01:45.concerns. And he had good news for this couple who got marriage today.

:01:45. > :01:50.They may have tied the knot for love but now they could get some money.

:01:50. > :01:55.Marriage is a great institution and it helps to build a good and strong

:01:55. > :01:58.society so it is right to back marriage in the income tax system.

:01:58. > :02:03.Most other advanced industrial countries do it and we should also

:02:03. > :02:08.do it. The part -- the policy would also apply to civil partnerships and

:02:08. > :02:19.gay couples. This is how it would work... That could save up to £200

:02:19. > :02:22.each year from 2016. At only basic rate taxpayers would benefit and the

:02:22. > :02:28.Conservatives say one in three married couples will gain. Nick

:02:28. > :02:32.Clegg called the idea patronising drivel and he will not vote against

:02:32. > :02:36.it. Labour said the money could be better spent. Tomorrow, the Prime

:02:36. > :02:40.Minister will announce plans to bring forward a scheme to help

:02:40. > :02:42.families with limited savings get on the housing ladder, but critics fear

:02:42. > :02:48.families with limited savings get on this will push up house prices. The

:02:48. > :02:51.sunshine was out in Manchester and Conservatives were upbeat, they

:02:51. > :02:56.believe the economy has turned a corner and the message is, please

:02:56. > :03:00.let us finish the job! At some say there are darker political clout on

:03:01. > :03:04.the horizon. Labour focused on the cost of living last week because

:03:04. > :03:07.they want to attach themselves to fairness because they think

:03:07. > :03:14.Conservatives have a weakness with that. Statistics show the economic

:03:14. > :03:17.is getting better at Labour saying, some of better and others are being

:03:17. > :03:23.left behind, and Conservatives need to be aware of that. Even before the

:03:23. > :03:28.conference, activists were having an exchange of opinions. And the policy

:03:28. > :03:31.divide between the parties is likely to grow.

:03:31. > :03:40.Ian, what does David Cameron have to do convince voters and his

:03:40. > :03:44.backbenchers? You are right to point to those 26.

:03:44. > :03:49.He has to prove he can help hard-pressed families in a way

:03:49. > :03:55.different from the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats. -- to point

:03:55. > :03:58.to those factors. So the married couples tax allowance was an attempt

:03:58. > :04:02.to form a closer relationship with those who say he should sound a bit

:04:02. > :04:06.more Conservative. And the housing announcement will send shivers up

:04:06. > :04:11.the spine of Vince Cable who is worried about a house bobble. But

:04:11. > :04:16.David Cameron says in the North of England, there is no housing

:04:16. > :04:23.bubble. Expect opponents on welfare also and education. Over Cameron is

:04:23. > :04:29.saying, give me a majority and I can achieve this. His opponents say that

:04:29. > :04:33.all he will do is prove his -- he is out of touch.

:04:33. > :04:35.Thank you. A sixth Briton has been confirmed dead following the Kenyan

:04:35. > :04:39.shopping centre siege, as the Foreign Office said it could not

:04:39. > :04:41.rule out the possible discovery of further British casualties. It comes

:04:41. > :04:45.amid reports that the Kenyan government was warned by Israel of a

:04:45. > :04:50.high risk of action by islamic militants. Our Africa correspondent,

:04:50. > :04:53.Andrew Harding, has more. Inside the ruins of the Westgate

:04:53. > :04:59.Andrew Harding, has more. Shopping Mall today. Survivors are

:04:59. > :05:02.being allowed back into claim their vehicles, even as dozens of bodies

:05:02. > :05:11.are still thought to be missing somewhere under the rubble. Huge

:05:11. > :05:16.destruction. This is our car. This man was among the first

:05:16. > :05:19.civilians to go in this morning. Everything had caved down so you

:05:20. > :05:26.could see the metal, you could see cars on top of the rubble that had

:05:26. > :05:31.come down from the top level. It is just one giant cave in that will

:05:31. > :05:38.take months to work through. It is a mess.

:05:38. > :05:41.New footage of the attack itself, Red Cross officials frantically

:05:41. > :05:44.ushering people to safety. Today, there were new claims the Kenyan

:05:44. > :05:50.authorities overlooked warnings ahead of the attack, what it is not

:05:50. > :05:54.clear how specific they were. Exactly one week after the killings

:05:54. > :05:58.started, there is still enormous confusion and uncertainty. Kenya

:05:58. > :06:04.government insists its and intelligence forces did the best

:06:04. > :06:10.they could in chaotic circumstances, but many are starting to question

:06:10. > :06:18.that. For this man, a difficult moment.

:06:19. > :06:21.The businessman was captured in these photographs going repeatedly

:06:21. > :06:24.back into the building to save civilians trapped by the fighting.

:06:24. > :06:32.Including this four-year-old American girl. Somehow persuaded to

:06:32. > :06:37.run for her life. She was very brave. A little girl her age running

:06:37. > :06:46.towards strange men holding guns is not easy. I am not sure if any child

:06:46. > :06:50.her age would have done the same. It has tested many here and there

:06:50. > :06:54.are plenty of questions as well as prayers right now.

:06:54. > :06:59.Kenya seems determined not to be divided by the horrors of the past

:06:59. > :07:02.week. Four people, including a

:07:02. > :07:05.16-year-old, have appeared in court charged with murder over a house

:07:05. > :07:17.fire that killed four members of the same family in Leicester. Bilal and

:07:17. > :07:21.Jamil Taufiq, as well as their mother Sheneela and sister Zainab,

:07:21. > :07:24.died in the fire at their home two weeks ago. Three other men have also

:07:24. > :07:27.been charged for their murder. Thousands of people have marched in

:07:27. > :07:30.protest over plans to close services at Stafford Hospital, just days

:07:30. > :07:33.before a public consultation ends. The demonstration was against plans

:07:33. > :07:36.to move maternity and paediatric services from the hospital which was

:07:36. > :07:40.at the centre of a health scandal and was put into administration last

:07:40. > :07:43.April. In an unprecedented crackdown on the

:07:43. > :07:46.far right in Greece, the leader of the controversial Golden Dawn party

:07:46. > :07:51.and four other MPs have been arrested on charges of belonging to

:07:51. > :07:54.a criminal organisation. The arrests come after the killing of a

:07:54. > :07:58.left-wing activist by an alleged Golden Dawn supporter ten days ago.

:07:58. > :08:09.Mark Lowen's report from Athens does contain some flash photography.

:08:09. > :08:15.They were, it seemed, untouchable until now. The leader and senior MPs

:08:15. > :08:20.of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in Greece seized for being part of a

:08:20. > :08:26.criminal group. An extraordinary moment, the first mass arrests of

:08:26. > :08:33.MPs here in 40 years. Angry supporters gathered outside, golden

:08:33. > :08:36.dawn has 18 MPs, its ratings soared with the economic crisis. But after

:08:36. > :08:42.a left-wing musician was killed by an alleged member, government moved

:08:42. > :08:46.fast. This is an unprecedented clamp-down on golden dawn.

:08:46. > :08:50.Supporters are on the back foot and in the police headquarters, the

:08:50. > :08:56.senior party leadership is under arrest. Government believes this is

:08:56. > :09:01.the beginning of the end of golden dawn but it has a big challenge to

:09:01. > :09:06.crush the neo-Nazis. But golden dawn vows it will not be silenced. --

:09:06. > :09:13.Golden Dawn. This is only the beginning. There and not ours. The

:09:13. > :09:18.government says it will crush you. No wait! Tonight, they were taken to

:09:18. > :09:23.court to be charged and the government will have two questions

:09:23. > :09:28.-- have to answer why it took months to arrest the party. This stunned

:09:28. > :09:32.country waits to see if Golden Dawn will fight back.

:09:32. > :09:36.There is fresh political instability in Italy after ministers from the

:09:36. > :09:38.party of the former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi have resigned from

:09:39. > :09:41.the coalition government. The ministers, from his centre-right

:09:41. > :09:50.party, quit after what they called an "unacceptable ultimatum" from the

:09:50. > :09:53.current Prime Minister to back him. A second earthquake has struck a

:09:53. > :10:02.remote part of Baluchistan province in South West Pakistan. Four hundred

:10:02. > :10:05.people died after an earthquake there on Tuesday, which was so

:10:05. > :10:12.powerful, a new island emerged from the sea. Over a hundred thousand

:10:12. > :10:15.people have been affected but aid has still not reach many of the

:10:15. > :10:19.worst affected areas, as Aleem Maqbool reports.

:10:19. > :10:23.First, a disaster, now in dignity. People at the epicentre of the

:10:23. > :10:28.earthquake is still not getting help. Salvaging what they can of

:10:28. > :10:34.their lives with their bare hands. It was already one of the most

:10:34. > :10:38.impoverished areas of Pakistan. Now whole villages have been reduced to

:10:38. > :10:42.rubble. Hundreds have lost their lives and many more have been left

:10:43. > :10:48.injured, with medical help only reaching a fraction of those who

:10:48. > :10:49.need it. The army says age distribution has been hampered

:10:49. > :10:53.need it. The army says age notched just by poor road networks

:10:53. > :10:58.and communication at by poor security -- the distribution of aid.

:10:58. > :11:02.Off the coast of the province, a different consequence of the

:11:02. > :11:09.violence. Amazingly, this was not here are a few days -- a couple of

:11:09. > :11:13.days ago, a new island forced out by the tremors, methane gas still

:11:13. > :11:20.bubbles around. This is very interesting. This is the part of the

:11:20. > :11:26.sea bed which comes out from the sea. Studies will have to be

:11:26. > :11:29.completed soon. Experts reckon the island could disappear again within

:11:29. > :11:33.months. What nature has thrown up is

:11:33. > :11:37.fascinating and it does feel like a privilege to be here. But it has

:11:37. > :11:42.thrown up hundreds of miles away the station and suffering. And that

:11:42. > :11:48.cannot be forgotten while looking at this incredible place.

:11:48. > :11:56.With all the sport, Catherine Downes at the BBC Sport Centre.

:11:56. > :11:59.Good evening, there were plenty of goals in the Barclays Premier

:11:59. > :12:04.League. Much of the day follows, so look away now. Dash-mac chip of the

:12:04. > :12:10.day. Under David Moyes, Manchester United have made their worst start

:12:10. > :12:14.in 24 years, beaten 2-1 by West Bromwich at Old Trafford and they

:12:14. > :12:19.are down to 12 in the table. Arsenal came out winners at Swansea in a

:12:19. > :12:22.match that marked 17 years in charge for the manager.

:12:22. > :12:26.Aaron Ramsey scored the second goal, so they climbed two points clear at

:12:26. > :12:33.the top of the league. A shock for Manchester City, beaten

:12:33. > :12:37.3-2 at Aston Villa, and the problems continue for Fulham and Crystal

:12:37. > :12:42.Palace. Chelsea and Tottenham drew. Celtic were in goal-scoring form,

:12:42. > :12:46.beating Kilmarnock 5-2 at Rugby Park.

:12:46. > :12:54.Georgios Samaras -- Georgios Samaras scored a hat trick.

:12:54. > :13:02.This kind of look would come in handy on Tuesday, Kris Commons had

:13:02. > :13:06.this shot into an empty net. That was fortunate but the goals from

:13:06. > :13:11.Georgios Samaras were anything but. The first was able to effect

:13:11. > :13:19.powerful shot. The second a tap in after great teamwork. 3-0 and

:13:19. > :13:25.comfortable, Kilmarnock needed something to cling onto and it was

:13:25. > :13:29.provided. After half-time, they drew closer. Celtic manager Neil Lennon

:13:29. > :13:31.was rightly concerned and soon had reason to be cheerful. Georgios

:13:31. > :13:36.Samaras completed the hat trick to reason to be cheerful. Georgios

:13:36. > :13:46.quash the Kilmarnock come back and this rounded off a handsome victory.

:13:46. > :13:56.Ring on bass! -- Barca. Dundee drew at hearts, and elsewhere...

:13:56. > :14:04.Saracens stay top of the premiership after eating Harlequins. They came

:14:04. > :14:08.from behind. -- beating. Chris Ashton scored the only try of the

:14:08. > :14:15.game and Owen Farrell kicked the rest of the points.

:14:15. > :14:16.And a Dutch cyclist has retained her road race title at the World

:14:16. > :14:21.Championships in Italy. British road race title at the World

:14:21. > :14:28.Olympic silver medallist Lizzie Armistead finished ninth. This is

:14:28. > :14:32.the third time the Dutch cyclist has been champion. A talented lady.

:14:32. > :14:39.You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.

:14:39. > :14:39.That is all from me, good evening.
