:00:00. > :00:20.Heightened security in Pakistan as the Taliban vows to take revenge for

:00:21. > :00:23.the death of their leader. Hakimulla Mehsud was killed by a US drone

:00:24. > :00:28.strike, sparking fury from Pakistan's government. The

:00:29. > :00:32.government of Pakistan does not see this drone attack as an attack on an

:00:33. > :00:37.individual, but as an attack on the peace process. Specialist officers

:00:38. > :00:40.are called in to end a prison disturbance at Maidstone jail.

:00:41. > :00:43.Charged with murder, the daughter and son-in-law of an elderly couple

:00:44. > :01:00.found buried in a garden in Mansfield. Ben Youngs, to Farrell.

:01:01. > :01:13.And it's a tale of two halves as England come back to beat Australia

:01:14. > :01:20.at Twickenham. Good evening. The Taliban in

:01:21. > :01:24.Pakistan has vowed to take revenge for the killing of their leader,

:01:25. > :01:29.Hakimulla Mehsud. He was targeted yesterday in a suspected US drone

:01:30. > :01:32.strike. Security forces have been put on high alert and Pakistan's

:01:33. > :01:35.government has condemned the attack, saying it has destroyed their

:01:36. > :01:38.attempts to hold peace talks with the militants. Mehsud was killed in

:01:39. > :01:46.north-western Pakistan, near the Afghan border. From Islamabad,

:01:47. > :01:50.Richard Galpin has sent this report. The security forces in the capital

:01:51. > :01:56.and across the country, now on high alert. This is following threats

:01:57. > :01:59.from the Pakistan Taliban it will launch suicide bombings in

:02:00. > :02:07.retaliation for the killing of its leader. In these rare pictures of

:02:08. > :02:12.Hakimullah Mehsud, he fills around with fellow fighters. Rest and

:02:13. > :02:16.recuperation for a man responsible for hundreds of attacks across

:02:17. > :02:20.Pakistan, including the shooting of a schoolgirl. In a BBC interview

:02:21. > :02:26.filmed just weeks before his death, he didn't did the late -- he did

:02:27. > :02:31.indicate he was potentially interested in peace talks with the

:02:32. > :02:36.government. We believe in discussions but the government has

:02:37. > :02:41.taken no serious steps to use -- to support us. The news of his death

:02:42. > :02:45.may be welcomed by many here who have seen the suffering he has

:02:46. > :02:56.caused. But there is also anger he was killed just as hope was rising.

:02:57. > :03:00.Perhaps most angry as this man, the interior minister who was leading

:03:01. > :03:06.the government's efforts to draw the Pakistan Taliban into peace talks.

:03:07. > :03:09.First and foremost, the government of Pakistan does not see this drone

:03:10. > :03:19.attack as an attack on an individual, but as an attack on the

:03:20. > :03:27.peace process. This is the scale of the violence the people of Pakistan

:03:28. > :03:30.have been facing as the Taliban's Stewart -- as the Taliban have

:03:31. > :03:35.pursued a relentless campaign, killing and injuring thousands. The

:03:36. > :03:40.government believes that peace talks are the best way to stop the

:03:41. > :03:45.bloodshed. But now the government says the Americans have ruined the

:03:46. > :03:50.chances of those talks taking place. Today it summoned the US ambassador

:03:51. > :03:53.to protest. The government is even considering the possibility of

:03:54. > :03:58.blocking the routes through Pakistan used by NATO to send fuel and other

:03:59. > :04:03.goods to its forces inside neighbouring Afghanistan. This is

:04:04. > :04:06.one of the men now being discussed by the Pakistan Taliban as a

:04:07. > :04:12.potential new leader. Khan Said Sajna. He is thought to be less

:04:13. > :04:19.hardline than Hakimullah Mehsud. But the death of Hakimullah Mehsud is a

:04:20. > :04:23.take all -- but the death of Hakimullah Mehsud is a big blow for

:04:24. > :04:27.the militant movement. Right now they are unlikely to be talking

:04:28. > :04:31.about peace. Hakimulla Mehsud was set to be a key

:04:32. > :04:33.player in the peace talks between the Pakistani Taliban and the

:04:34. > :04:35.government. Our world affairs correspondent, Rajesh Mirchandani,

:04:36. > :04:38.assesses what his death means for those talks and the already fragile

:04:39. > :04:46.relationship between Pakistan and the US.

:04:47. > :04:51.To the Taliban, he was a hero, to the Americans wanted terrorist.

:04:52. > :04:59.Pakistanis may be glad he is dead but have they lost potential

:05:00. > :05:02.peacemaker? One day before Pakistan in -- Pakistani officials were to

:05:03. > :05:07.meet, I'd US drone strike killed Hakimullah Mehsud. Did it also kill

:05:08. > :05:14.any hopes for peace? The peace talks, in order to bring some sort

:05:15. > :05:22.of stability to the tribal areas of Pakistan, are crucial. Since 9/

:05:23. > :05:27.50,000 Pakistanis have died, mainly in fighting the militants in the

:05:28. > :05:37.tribal areas. Pakistan is desperate to have peace in its territories. --

:05:38. > :05:40.since 9/11. The Pakistanis are angry about how Hakimullah Mehsud was

:05:41. > :05:46.killed. Four years America refused to even admit that it was using

:05:47. > :05:50.drones to target its enemies. It has carried out hundreds of strikes in

:05:51. > :05:54.Pakistan's tribal areas with unmanned aircraft. It is a tactic

:05:55. > :06:02.that has eliminated some key figures. In 2004, a missile fired

:06:03. > :06:13.from a drone killed this man. In 2009, Baitullah Mehsud was killed.

:06:14. > :06:19.And this year, Waliur Rehman was killed in a drone strike. Behind the

:06:20. > :06:28.smiles in Washington last week, ongoing tensions between the

:06:29. > :06:32.countries' leaders. Pakistan says America does not respect its

:06:33. > :06:37.territorial sovereignty. In a troubled region, this is a difficult

:06:38. > :06:40.and vital relationship. Analysts think it must and will survive the

:06:41. > :06:45.latest killing of the Taliban leader. The US government does not

:06:46. > :06:50.want to destabilise the civilian government in Pakistan. The

:06:51. > :06:55.Pakistani government needs to make sure that the problems in

:06:56. > :07:02.Afghanistan do not spill over. What will follow this man's death? Peace

:07:03. > :07:07.or more violence? The American scene negotiations with the Taliban is an

:07:08. > :07:13.internal matter for Pakistan. -- the Americans say.

:07:14. > :07:15.The prison service says a disturbance at Maidstone jail in

:07:16. > :07:18.Kent has been resolved without injury or damage. Specialist

:07:19. > :07:22.officers were called in to deal with the incident, which involved 40

:07:23. > :07:25.inmates. A spokesman for the Prison Officers Association said the

:07:26. > :07:28.trouble followed changes which have resulted in prisoners having to

:07:29. > :07:34.spend more time in their cells. Philippa Young reports.

:07:35. > :07:38.Specially trained prison riot officers were deployed to the jail,

:07:39. > :07:42.along with local police, fire and ambulance crews. The incident was

:07:43. > :07:48.contained in one wing which is separated from the others. Maidstone

:07:49. > :07:53.is a category C men's jail with 600 inmates, are dominantly sex

:07:54. > :07:56.offenders, but it also takes in a number of foreign nationals with

:07:57. > :08:01.more than 18 months left to serve under sentence. The landlady who

:08:02. > :08:06.runs the pub across the road from the prison said she could hear the

:08:07. > :08:13.disturbance. At 5:15pm, I could hear shouting. I thought it was outside

:08:14. > :08:18.because it was quite loud. I went to the window and heard it was coming

:08:19. > :08:23.from the prison. You could hear the prisoners in this blog shouting,

:08:24. > :08:28.what is going on? They were trying to find out, obviously they had been

:08:29. > :08:35.locked into their cells. It was like a football crowd. The incident began

:08:36. > :08:40.around four o'clock this afternoon. It was in one wing and it involved

:08:41. > :08:47.40 prisoners. The right response plan was put into action. By

:08:48. > :08:52.6:30pm, the incident was declared over. The prison service said that

:08:53. > :08:58.no staff or inmates were injured. It is extremely rare. It does not

:08:59. > :09:03.happen often. Incidents have been on the increase of late and there has

:09:04. > :09:05.been concern around the service. This is a reflection of this

:09:06. > :09:10.territory and the cuts being made in the prison service. The Justice

:09:11. > :09:17.Secretary has said he wants to bring down the cost of prison, his

:09:18. > :09:21.philosophy, getting more for less. The Prison Officers Association is

:09:22. > :09:26.blaming spending cuts. Staff cuts mean prisoners spend more time

:09:27. > :09:30.locked in their cells. At that has set -- at a separate incident in

:09:31. > :09:35.Warwickshire, around 60 inmates refused to return to their cells.

:09:36. > :09:40.That has been resolved peacefully. In Maidstone, an investigation is

:09:41. > :09:45.underway. The prison service has said that those involved will be

:09:46. > :09:48.dealt with appropriately. Two people have been remanded in

:09:49. > :09:51.custody after appearing before magistrates in Sheffield charged

:09:52. > :09:56.with the murder of a Sri Lankan graduate. Thavisha Lakindu Peiris,

:09:57. > :09:59.who was 25, was stabbed to death during his final shift before

:10:00. > :10:02.starting a new job as an IT consultant. Shamraze Khan, who is

:10:03. > :10:05.25, and a 17-year-old boy were remanded in custody to appear before

:10:06. > :10:07.Sheffield Crown Court later this month.

:10:08. > :10:11.The daughter and son-in-law of an elderly couple whose remains were

:10:12. > :10:14.found buried in their back garden in Mansfield three weeks ago have

:10:15. > :10:16.appeared in court charged with their murders. Susan and Christopher

:10:17. > :10:18.Edwards were arrested in London on Wednesday. William and Patricia

:10:19. > :10:26.Wycherley disappeared in 1998. They'd been shot dead. From

:10:27. > :10:29.Mansfield, Ben Ando reports. Standing side-by-side and flanked by

:10:30. > :10:34.court guards, fifth and five-year-old Susan Edwards and her

:10:35. > :10:36.husband, Christopher, 57, are charged jointly with murdering her

:10:37. > :10:42.parents, William and Patricia Wycherley. During a short hearing

:10:43. > :10:47.they spoke only to confirm their names and ages and that they

:10:48. > :10:50.understood the charges. They were arrested on suspicion of murder at

:10:51. > :10:56.St Pancras railway station on Wednesday. It was exactly three

:10:57. > :11:01.weeks after police unearthed the bodies of a man and woman bedded in

:11:02. > :11:06.shallow graves at this addressed in Nottinghamshire. The bodies are

:11:07. > :11:10.believed to be those of William and Patricia Wycherley. Postmortem test

:11:11. > :11:17.revealed that both had been shot dead. William and Patricia Wycherley

:11:18. > :11:21.had him described as private, even reclusive. When they disappeared

:11:22. > :11:26.from their home 15 years ago, many people assumed that they had moved

:11:27. > :11:29.away. Their daughter and son-in-law have been reminded in custody and it

:11:30. > :11:41.will appear again before a Crown Court judge on Monday. -- and they

:11:42. > :11:43.will appear again. Campaigners seeking the release of a

:11:44. > :11:45.freelance British journalist detained along with Greenpeace

:11:46. > :11:48.activists in Russia have been staging a silent protest outside the

:11:49. > :11:52.Russian embassy in London. Kieron Bryan was one of 30 people arrested

:11:53. > :11:55.in September by the Russian security forces during a protest against oil

:11:56. > :11:58.drilling in the Arctic. Strong winds have brought down

:11:59. > :12:03.electricity lines in South and West Wales, causing power cuts across the

:12:04. > :12:06.region. Gusts of up to 80mph have damaged buildings and uprooted

:12:07. > :12:09.trees, and a section of the M4 was closed earlier today when a caravan

:12:10. > :12:13.overturned. It's been a busy day of sport. Let's

:12:14. > :12:19.join Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes at the BBC Sport Centre.

:12:20. > :12:23.Thanks very much, Matthew. Good evening. England celebrated their

:12:24. > :12:25.ten-year anniversary of winning the Rugby Union World Cup today by

:12:26. > :12:29.beating Australia again, this time at Twickenham on the opening day of

:12:30. > :12:32.the autumn internationals. They had to come from behind, though,

:12:33. > :12:35.eventually winning by 20 points to 13. Patrick Geary reports.

:12:36. > :12:41.English rugby spent ten years trying to restart a party at left in

:12:42. > :12:46.Sydney. The men who lifted the World Cup in 2003 were back today,

:12:47. > :12:50.helpless onlookers, a bit like the current crop when faced with the

:12:51. > :12:55.likes of this. Australia went in front with the first try of the

:12:56. > :13:01.game. Their lead was reinforced. The Australians were ahead by seven

:13:02. > :13:07.points at the break. Taking photos is fine, but the key for England was

:13:08. > :13:13.taking chances. Into the second half and a ricochet went their way. Chris

:13:14. > :13:17.Robshaw did the rest. The water tight Australian defence admit

:13:18. > :13:21.parted again. Owen Farrell picked out the channel and dived into it.

:13:22. > :13:28.The opposition attempts to reduce the deficit if did. They fell short,

:13:29. > :13:30.just as they had against the Lions. For England, there is more work to

:13:31. > :13:33.do. Well, at the Rugby League World Cup,

:13:34. > :13:36.England put last week's disappointing defeat to Australia

:13:37. > :13:42.behind them to easily beat Ireland this afternoon. The tournament

:13:43. > :13:47.co-hosts scored eight tries in the 42-0 victory in Huddersfield. Tim

:13:48. > :13:52.Hague has the details. It is the price we all want, but to

:13:53. > :13:56.get closer to it, England needed their first win of the World Cup and

:13:57. > :14:03.against Ireland, memories of last week's defeat were soon forgotten.

:14:04. > :14:08.112 seconds gone when Ryan Hall scored the game's first try. It was

:14:09. > :14:14.not long to wait for a second, in the same corner from the same score.

:14:15. > :14:16.Tom Briscoe scored two more before a relentless first 20 minutes was

:14:17. > :14:24.completed with the fifth England try. They are putting a sword

:14:25. > :14:30.through this Irish team. The sword kept slicing. Two more tries

:14:31. > :14:36.followed. Kallum Watkins was the grateful recipient. This was the

:14:37. > :14:52.cherry on a convincing victory. Rangi Chase beg the opposition to

:14:53. > :14:55.the punch. -- bet the opposition. There is plenty to ponder after a

:14:56. > :14:58.performance like this. There were plenty of goals in the

:14:59. > :15:02.Barclays Premier League today. Match Of The Day follows the news on BBC

:15:03. > :15:05.One, so if you don't want to know who scored them, please divert your

:15:06. > :15:09.attention for a little while. Arsenal are five points clear at the

:15:10. > :15:12.top of the table after a 2-0 win over third-placed Liverpool. Santi

:15:13. > :15:15.Cazorla scored the first, with Aaron Ramsey adding a spectacular second.

:15:16. > :15:16.Champions Manchester United beat Fulham for their first back-to-back

:15:17. > :15:21.league victories under David Moyes. Cazorla scored the first, with

:15:22. > :15:24.Manchester City moved up to fourth after a 7-0 thrashing of Norwich.

:15:25. > :15:28.Chelsea missed the chance to close the gap on Arsenal, losing away at

:15:29. > :15:33.Newcastle. And Crystal Palace stay rooted to the bottom of the table

:15:34. > :15:36.after a defeat at West Brom. Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic

:15:37. > :15:39.had to come from behind to rescue a point with a 1-1 draw against Dundee

:15:40. > :15:42.United. St Mirren against Ross County had to be abandoned just

:15:43. > :15:45.after half-time because of heavy rain. Elsewhere, there were wins for

:15:46. > :15:48.St Johnstone and Inverness. British cyclist Joanna Rowsell has

:15:49. > :15:52.won her second gold medal at the Track World Cup in Manchester. One

:15:53. > :15:55.of the golden girls from London 2012, Rowsell added the 3km

:15:56. > :16:04.individual pursuit title to the team pursuit gold she won yesterday. And

:16:05. > :16:06.Mark Webber pipped his four-time world championship-winning team mate

:16:07. > :16:10.Sebastien Vettel to pole position for tomorrow's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

:16:11. > :16:12.And that's the sport. Back to you, Matthew.

:16:13. > :16:14.A reminder of tonight's main story: Pakistan has accused the United

:16:15. > :16:18.States of "ambushing" peace talks with the Taliban by killing the

:16:19. > :16:21.leader of the militant group in a drone strike. You can see more on

:16:22. > :16:36.that and all of today's other stories on the BBC News Channel.

:16:37. > :16:42.Good evening. Yet again, strong winds have been causing problems

:16:43. > :16:48.today. It has been a stormy Saturday afternoon in South Wales. The winds

:16:49. > :16:53.will ease overnight, but it will still be blustery, with plenty of

:16:54. > :16:58.showers tomorrow morning. For the next few hours, it will still be

:16:59. > :17:05.blustery. There is still the risk of gusts of 40 mph, possibly 60 mph in

:17:06. > :17:10.places. It will be wet in the West of Scotland as temperatures dropped

:17:11. > :17:16.to six degrees. Sunday sees web and windy weather persisting across the

:17:17. > :17:21.north-east of the UK. There will be showers across England, but not too

:17:22. > :17:25.many in the south-east. Even in the West, the showers will tend to use

:17:26. > :17:32.and the winds will die down a little bit. There will be some showers

:17:33. > :17:35.coming into western Scotland, and the rain and strong winds will

:17:36. > :17:44.persist across Caithness and parts of Aberdeenshire. Some showers for

:17:45. > :17:46.north-west England, but much of Central and the north-east of

:17:47. > :17:53.England will have blue skies for the afternoon. Temperatures in double

:17:54. > :17:57.figures. The south-west will be dry for a time before the next batch of

:17:58. > :17:58.wet weather arrives. The rain
