:00:00. > :00:11.An investigation is underway after a helicopter crash in Glasgow. Eight
:00:12. > :00:15.people are confirmed dead. It came down on the roof of a busy pub in
:00:16. > :00:28.the city centre. 14 more are seriously injured. There was a loud
:00:29. > :00:31.bang, and a couple of seconds later the pub collapsed in on itself.
:00:32. > :00:34.Emergency services are still at the scene as investigators try to piece
:00:35. > :00:37.together what went wrong. Also tonight: Soil from First World War
:00:38. > :00:42.battlefields is delivered to a memorial garden in London ahead of
:00:43. > :00:45.centenary commemorations. And triumph for Australia as they
:00:46. > :01:03.thrash New Zealand in the final of the Rugby League World Cup.
:01:04. > :01:11.Good evening. An investigation is underway tonight after a helicopter
:01:12. > :01:17.crashed through the roof of a crowded pub in Glasgow. The police
:01:18. > :01:21.helicopter came down late last night, killing all three people on
:01:22. > :01:23.board and another five who were in the city centre pub. Scotland's
:01:24. > :01:27.first minister, Alex Salmond, has called it a "black day for Glasgow
:01:28. > :01:30.and Scotland". The Queen has said her thoughts and prayers are with
:01:31. > :01:38.the victims. Our correspondent James Cook is at the scene.
:01:39. > :01:48.Yes, this has been a traumatic day for Glasgow. It began with some hope
:01:49. > :01:52.that survivors might began -- found amongst the rubble, but that hope
:01:53. > :01:58.dwindled. The operation behind me has been dangerous, and dangerous
:01:59. > :02:03.and distressing as well. My report contains flash photography. At first
:02:04. > :02:07.glance, it is hard to see what happened here, but look closer and
:02:08. > :02:11.the site is both surreal and shocking. The pub was packed, the
:02:12. > :02:17.music loud, and nobody heard the helicopter coming down until it was
:02:18. > :02:21.too late. Suddenly I heard this very loud bang. The ceiling had fallen
:02:22. > :02:27.onto the bar, where the central bit of the pub is. Reflecting on what
:02:28. > :02:31.happened, how do you feel? I consider myself very, very lucky to
:02:32. > :02:39.be where I was, and I feel very sorry for the unlucky ones who were
:02:40. > :02:43.caught under the rubble. Within minutes, dozens, then hundreds of
:02:44. > :02:49.firefighters, police and paramedics were on their way. But before they
:02:50. > :02:52.arrived, it was the people of Glasgow who risked their lives to
:02:53. > :03:01.help. They had no training, but they did not hesitate. Are you OK? It is
:03:02. > :03:05.a bit of a blur, but people formed a sort of human chain, side-by-side
:03:06. > :03:17.with each other to help pull injured people out. Jim, there is blood on
:03:18. > :03:22.your shirt. Yes, it is not mine. As the night wore on, there was some
:03:23. > :03:26.hope. Firefighters said they had made contact with survivors trapped
:03:27. > :03:29.in the pub. But for one man, watching and waiting all night for
:03:30. > :03:37.news of his father there was no comfort. I know my dad was in there.
:03:38. > :03:44.My family have checked everywhere. We know he was in there. And it has
:03:45. > :03:50.hit it right in the bit where he sits. As the sun rose, -- seemed
:03:51. > :03:54.clear that any hope of rescue was gone, and within a few hours and
:03:55. > :04:00.emotional Chief Constable confirmed that eight people were dead. Three
:04:01. > :04:10.of these eight fatalities were found within the helicopter and were our
:04:11. > :04:12.colleagues. The remaining five people were found within the
:04:13. > :04:23.building. There are many, many questions about
:04:24. > :04:24.what happened here, but for now, this city is still overwhelmed with
:04:25. > :04:32.shock. The focus now is beginning to move
:04:33. > :04:37.towards the recovery operation here. They have brought in a large
:04:38. > :04:41.crane onto the site near to the helicopter itself, which is still
:04:42. > :04:45.enmeshed within the building. And what they will try to do, they
:04:46. > :04:50.think, is try to lift the helicopter up to check underneath it to see
:04:51. > :04:54.what might lie underneath. That will obviously be very difficult indeed
:04:55. > :04:58.and will be a slow process. One accident investigator, who is very
:04:59. > :05:03.experienced, described the situation as one of the most complex sites
:05:04. > :05:07.he'd ever been on in his career. That gives you a sense of how hard
:05:08. > :05:11.it will be. Also, the investigators are appealing for any video or
:05:12. > :05:20.skills of what happened here last night, people should get in touch to
:05:21. > :05:22.find out what caused this terrible crash -- stills.
:05:23. > :05:26.The type of helicopter that crashed is widely used among emergency
:05:27. > :05:29.services here and abroad. Air accident investigators are at the
:05:30. > :05:32.scene, examining the wreckage, and trying to work out what caused it to
:05:33. > :05:37.fail. Our Transport Correspondent Richard Westcott reports.
:05:38. > :05:43.It is the workhorse for many emergency services over the world, a
:05:44. > :05:47.common sight flying low over our cities, but now there is a question
:05:48. > :05:55.over its safety. Eyewitnesses could provide important clues. I could
:05:56. > :05:59.hear a spluttering, mechanical noise like a car running out of petrol but
:06:00. > :06:02.very loud. I felt it was right about me and I was looking to see what was
:06:03. > :06:10.going on, and I saw the tail fin of the helicopter falling out of the
:06:11. > :06:14.sky. But investigators will begin by focusing on the wreckage. We will
:06:15. > :06:19.make sure the whole tale is there, the propellers on the back are
:06:20. > :06:22.mounted on the tail. We have here one of the main rotor blades
:06:23. > :06:25.protruding through the building which talents -- tells us it was
:06:26. > :06:30.attached to the helicopter at the time. We will look for witness
:06:31. > :06:35.marks, was rotating, did it cut into the building or was it at a complete
:06:36. > :06:38.stop when it hit the building? That will tell as part of the story as to
:06:39. > :06:48.whether they were powered, whether the pilot was in control, or whether
:06:49. > :06:52.they just seized completely. The EC135 has an excellent safety record
:06:53. > :06:57.and is widely used by police forces and Ambulance Services. It has two
:06:58. > :07:01.engines, but even if both of those engines fail, pilots are trained to
:07:02. > :07:05.land safely by gliding to the ground. Those pilots are also
:07:06. > :07:10.regularly tested to cope with emergencies. It is not thought that
:07:11. > :07:14.the helicopter had a black box on board, but the computer systems
:07:15. > :07:21.should still tell investigators what was happening when the aircraft lost
:07:22. > :07:24.height. The pilot union said that trends in helicopter safety was a
:07:25. > :07:28.matter of concern after a series of accidents, mainly over the North
:07:29. > :07:30.Sea. Even so, it could be awhile before we know just what has caused
:07:31. > :07:38.crash. -- this crash. Across Scotland flags have been
:07:39. > :07:41.flying at half-mast as a mark of respect for the victims of the
:07:42. > :07:44.crash. Many St Andrew's Day events were cancelled and football grounds
:07:45. > :07:47.observed a minute's silence. From Glasgow, Chris Buckler reports on
:07:48. > :07:51.how the city responded to the tragedy.
:07:52. > :07:58.As darkness returned to Glasgow, so did the thoughts of what happened
:07:59. > :08:02.last night. They are impossible to ignore in the street still cordoned
:08:03. > :08:05.off and of what remains of the Clutha pub. Throughout the day the
:08:06. > :08:11.anxious wait for news has brought little but misery. Both the worried
:08:12. > :08:17.and thankful gathered at a Mass held at St Andrews Cathedral just minutes
:08:18. > :08:20.from the side of the crash. It was disturbing and distressing to see
:08:21. > :08:26.the images of this helicopter, it was surreal. Many in the city have
:08:27. > :08:32.friends who were injured when the helicopter came crashing down. My
:08:33. > :08:36.friend, Douglas, he went ahead of me by a couple of minutes and he
:08:37. > :08:41.unfortunately was in the bar. I was making my way along Clyde Street and
:08:42. > :08:48.as I approached the bar there was a very loud explosion. Shock and grief
:08:49. > :08:51.has united people. The silence at today's match between Falkirk and
:08:52. > :08:56.Glasgow Rangers said more than any one individual could. In each of the
:08:57. > :09:03.stands, they stood to show their respect for the dead and injured.
:09:04. > :09:10.This is a black day for Glasgow and for Scotland. But it is also St
:09:11. > :09:15.Andrews Day, and the day where we can take pride and courage in how we
:09:16. > :09:20.respond to adversity and tragedy. There is no doubt that what was to
:09:21. > :09:24.have been a day of national celebration has become one of the
:09:25. > :09:28.morning. There are people going out in Glasgow this evening, but the
:09:29. > :09:33.events of the last 24 hours hanging over this Saturday night. After all,
:09:34. > :09:36.nobody who went to the Clutha bar could have predicted the chaos
:09:37. > :09:40.there. On the eve of December, it is not Christmas lights that stand out
:09:41. > :09:42.in the streets, but the bright lights of search teams working to
:09:43. > :09:49.uncover the dreadful reality. In other news, a man has been killed
:09:50. > :09:52.during political protests in the Thai capital, Bangkok. Police said
:09:53. > :09:54.five others were injured when pro-government demonstrators clashed
:09:55. > :10:00.with those calling for the Prime Minister to resign. The leader of
:10:01. > :10:03.the protest movement has called for "an all-out assault" on government
:10:04. > :10:04.buildings tomorrow in an effort to bring down the current
:10:05. > :10:09.administration. One of the biggest British film
:10:10. > :10:16.stars of the 1940s and 50s, Jean Kent, has died at the age of 92. The
:10:17. > :10:19.actress made her name in a series of melodramas made by Gainsborough
:10:20. > :10:21.Pictures after the Second World War. During her film career she worked
:10:22. > :10:28.alongside Marilyn Monroe, Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier.
:10:29. > :10:32.70 sandbags full of earth gathered from the battlefields of Flanders
:10:33. > :10:35.have been carried through central London to a memorial garden to mark
:10:36. > :10:42.next year's 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The
:10:43. > :10:44.soil was taken by gun carriage from HMS Belfast on the Thames to
:10:45. > :10:54.Wellington Barracks, where the garden is being created. Robert Hall
:10:55. > :11:01.reports. This was a journey full of echoes from the past. The clatter of
:11:02. > :11:05.horses hooves, a gun carriage which is -- left the factory as the clouds
:11:06. > :11:09.of war gathered and an escort drawn from regiments which left so many in
:11:10. > :11:13.Belgium and France. Every generation should remember, especially now

:11:18. > :11:20.honoured to be underneath the Menin Gate for the correct -- collection
:11:21. > :11:26.of the soil, and paraded to London again. A journey that began in the
:11:27. > :11:29.Menin Gate on Armistice Day symbolising a bond of friendship
:11:30. > :11:36.that has enjoyed her nearly a century. -- in Jordan for nearly a
:11:37. > :11:43.century. It is important to remind people what it is like. My uncle was
:11:44. > :11:48.gassed in the First World War, so we have to think about what they did.
:11:49. > :11:54.My grandfather fought in that war and we think it is important to pay
:11:55. > :12:02.respect. With the 100th anniversary next year, it is so important. A lot
:12:03. > :12:06.of us have a lot to learn from it. 1000 schoolchildren from Britain and
:12:07. > :12:13.Belgium had gathered soil at 70 Commonwealth war cemeteries. Today,
:12:14. > :12:17.age old Patrick Casey was chosen to add the first contribution to the
:12:18. > :12:21.new memorial garden. -- eight-year-old. It makes me feel
:12:22. > :12:25.proud and excited. It is very special, because we're talking about
:12:26. > :12:31.soldiers that risked their lives for us. This is more than a gesture of
:12:32. > :12:35.remembrance. The soil and the poppy seeds it contains will provide a
:12:36. > :12:39.haven of peace and reflection in the hubbub of a modern city.
