:00:23. > :00:26.Good afternoon from Qunu, where this morning the former South African

:00:27. > :00:31.president Nelson Mandela was laid to rest.

:00:32. > :00:34.After a funeral service attended by more than 4,000 people, including

:00:35. > :00:40.Prince Charles, his body was buried on a hillside close to his family

:00:41. > :00:43.home. The current president Jacob Zuma said he would miss Mr

:00:44. > :00:46.Mandela's, smile, laughter and leadership, and that work must

:00:47. > :00:58.continue to build the South Africa of Mr Mandela's dreams. Our world

:00:59. > :01:02.affairs editor John Simpson reports. It was in this rolling countryside

:01:03. > :01:11.that Nelson Mandela's walk to Freedom began.

:01:12. > :01:22.Buyers own wish -- by his own wish, it is where it ended today. The

:01:23. > :01:28.ceremony was well practised and highly polished, and had a suitable

:01:29. > :01:37.grandeur to it. The world was watching. The best equipped and

:01:38. > :01:41.trained soldiers, sailors and airmen in Africa by some way brought their

:01:42. > :01:53.one-time commander-in-chief to the funeral ceremony.

:01:54. > :02:00.The hymns sung throughout the ceremony were once that Mandela

:02:01. > :02:05.himself particularly loved. Although the funeral has been years in the

:02:06. > :02:11.planning, the vast temporary auditorium was put up in a matter of

:02:12. > :02:15.days. The family, which has often been driven with disputes about

:02:16. > :02:26.money and status, came together for the ceremony. His widow sat close to

:02:27. > :02:30.Winnie, his former wife, who has been brought back into the fold in

:02:31. > :02:41.recent months, seemingly less radical than she once was. The

:02:42. > :02:46.guests were a mixed bunch. African presidents, a cane, Princes. Prince

:02:47. > :02:50.Charles representing the Queen seemed to get less attention than

:02:51. > :02:59.Oprah Winfrey. Richard Branson was there. So was Gerry Adams, and so

:03:00. > :03:06.was former Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who only yesterday seemed to have

:03:07. > :03:09.been snubbed. Mandela's granddaughter brought out the human

:03:10. > :03:15.side that people especially loved about him. He was a lot of fun to be

:03:16. > :03:22.around and he was a great storyteller. He had a great sense of

:03:23. > :03:28.humour. During the past year, we truly missed hearing his voice. At

:03:29. > :03:32.dinner, he liked to tell stories about his childhood. He preferred

:03:33. > :03:38.ones that he would poke fun at himself with. Politicians here often

:03:39. > :03:41.acknowledge that not enough has been achieved since Mandela came to power

:03:42. > :03:51.19 years ago. President Jacob Zuma made this pledge. South African

:03:52. > :04:00.children must grow up in a country that is not only politically free,

:04:01. > :04:05.but which is also free and safe from violence, free and safe from crime,

:04:06. > :04:19.re-and safe from poverty, ignorance and disease. Free and save from

:04:20. > :04:27.indignity. Long speeches had predict to be delayed the programme, but

:04:28. > :04:34.finally it was time for the burial ceremony. -- had predictably

:04:35. > :04:52.delayed. It took place away from the cameras

:04:53. > :05:06.while the South African apples paid its last respect. -- airforce. This

:05:07. > :05:13.was the grave of the most admired leader on earth who once walked

:05:14. > :05:18.barefoot on these hills. You've been covering the politics of

:05:19. > :05:23.this country for more than 30 years. What were your impressions of this

:05:24. > :05:30.momentous day? I thought it was the best of the new South Africa. It was

:05:31. > :05:35.relaxed, easy, quite jokey at times. You saw people like resident Jacob

:05:36. > :05:45.Zuma making jokes with other leaders. It didn't feel crisp,

:05:46. > :05:52.people looking at their watches and saying, OK, now we need to do

:05:53. > :05:55.something else. But the bits they needed clear discipline, the

:05:56. > :06:00.military side of it, were absolutely magnificent. I thought it was very

:06:01. > :06:05.well done. The only thing that let it down was that, inevitably, there

:06:06. > :06:11.were some presidents, one or two from elsewhere in Africa, who made

:06:12. > :06:18.these long, turgid speeches, which did let it down a bit, and delayed

:06:19. > :06:26.it. That I thought the South African element was magnificent. That is it

:06:27. > :06:32.from as in Qunu. Now, a look at the rest of the day's news.

:06:33. > :06:35.Consultants at hospitals in England could lose their right to refuse to

:06:36. > :06:38.work at weekends as part of proposals to tackle high death rates

:06:39. > :06:41.for patients treated on Saturdays and Sundays. Hospitals which don't

:06:42. > :06:51.make the changes will face financial penalties. Our health correspondent,

:06:52. > :06:55.Dominic Hughes, reports. Providing comprehensive care seven

:06:56. > :06:59.days a week is an issue the NHS has struggled with, but at Poole

:07:00. > :07:04.Hospital in Dorset, they seem to have found a way. Elderly patients

:07:05. > :07:10.get to see a consultant quickly and have access to the support they need

:07:11. > :07:13.at weekends. NHS leaders believe it is the presence of those senior

:07:14. > :07:18.doctors that can make a real difference across a hospital.

:07:19. > :07:22.Firstly, you don't have any appropriate admissions to the

:07:23. > :07:25.hospital. Secondly, when they are admitted, they get a quick diagnosis

:07:26. > :07:30.and treatment is started more quickly. That means patients spend

:07:31. > :07:35.less time in hospital and as a whole the hospital is more efficient. For

:07:36. > :07:38.the past year, a group of experts has been considering how to make

:07:39. > :07:43.sure the NHS provides the best care seven days a week. They proposed

:07:44. > :07:49.removing the right of consultants to reviews working at weekends. Crucial

:07:50. > :07:53.diagnostic test should also be available seven days a week and a

:07:54. > :07:59.series of rewards and sanctions, including multi-million pound fines

:08:00. > :08:03.for hospitals, could encourage the entire system to change. But there

:08:04. > :08:10.are warnings over how much these plans might cost. This will cost

:08:11. > :08:15.more money. When not sure how much, possibly between one billion and ?2

:08:16. > :08:20.billion. That is a huge challenge. Many hospitals are struggling to

:08:21. > :08:25.balance their books even now. These plans offer a vision of how

:08:26. > :08:30.emergency services in England may operate in the future. But the

:08:31. > :08:35.unanswered questions are where any money will come from and whether

:08:36. > :08:37.consultants will agree. Detectives investigating the

:08:38. > :08:40.disappearance of the Oxford teenager Jayden Parkinson have asked the

:08:41. > :08:43.public not to conduct their own searches for her. Police say they

:08:44. > :08:46.believe Jayden has been murdered. They are searching a number of areas

:08:47. > :08:50.near Didcot. She was last seen nearly two weeks ago in Oxford. Two

:08:51. > :08:53.people have been arrested. The Transport Secretary Patrick

:08:54. > :08:56.McLoughlin has once again raised the prospect of a third runway at

:08:57. > :08:58.Heathrow, saying the government hasn't ruled it out. A

:08:59. > :09:07.government-appointed commission is due to publish its recommendations

:09:08. > :09:11.on airport expansion this week. China's robot rover has driven off

:09:12. > :09:14.its landing module and on to the Moon's surface. The robotic vehicle

:09:15. > :09:17.rolled down a ramp lowered by the lander and on to the volcanic plain

:09:18. > :09:21.known as Sinus Iridum. The lander will operate there for a year, while

:09:22. > :09:28.the rover is expected to work for some three months.

:09:29. > :09:31.Cricket, and the Ashes seem all but lost as Australia ended day three of

:09:32. > :09:35.the crucial third test in Perth leading England by 369 runs. Once

:09:36. > :09:38.again, England failed to impress with the bat and were bowled out for

:09:39. > :09:51.251. Australia then piled on the runs closing on 235-3, as Joe Wilson

:09:52. > :09:55.reports. Sunday in the park in Perth with

:09:56. > :09:58.cricket just next door. If they tried hard, England fans could try

:09:59. > :10:07.to ignore it, although the local paper had already declared the Ashes

:10:08. > :10:16.one. 251 all out England's latest effort. Stuart Broad was soon

:10:17. > :10:19.afterwards in hospital with an injured but. A depleted England

:10:20. > :10:26.attack for Australia's second innings. Chris Rogers added a

:10:27. > :10:30.dropped catch into this grim cricket cocktail. One should have an out

:10:31. > :10:38.stumped twice but the wicketkeeper didn't have the ball. No England

:10:39. > :10:41.player has made a century in this Ashes. David Warner completed his

:10:42. > :10:52.second of the series with a typical flourish. He was out by the close,

:10:53. > :11:00.but in here is celebration is run away. Australia are making it look

:11:01. > :11:04.simple. You can see more on all of today's

:11:05. > :11:07.stories on the BBC News Channel. The next news on BBC One is at 5.30pm

:11:08. > :11:24.this afternoon - bye for now. Prepare yourself for a week of

:11:25. > :11:27.lively weather, all thanks to a strong Jetstream overhead which

:11:28. > :11:35.itself is being driven by huge temperature once trusts -- contrast

:11:36. > :11:44.in the Allan Taylor. -- in the Atlantic. Along these ripples that

:11:45. > :11:53.jet stream buckles and we start to see areas of low pressure developed

:11:54. > :11:56.will stop --. This will bring the change from sunny conditions to the

:11:57. > :12:02.wetter conditions we will finish the day with. Locally severe gales in

:12:03. > :12:06.Scotland. Heavy rain in Northern Ireland which is pushing eastwards,

:12:07. > :12:12.so expect heavy rain across southern and eastern Scotland. Some parts of

:12:13. > :12:16.eastern England stay dry. We will lose their hazy sunshine we have at

:12:17. > :12:21.the moment. Elsewhere, a lot of cloud and occasional rain. Quite

:12:22. > :12:25.mild in the south, temperatures 13 degrees. Staying mild in the South

:12:26. > :12:32.will stop most of us will see rain at some point in the night. Cold air

:12:33. > :12:35.pushes into Scotland and Northern Ireland later, turning showers

:12:36. > :12:40.wintry on higher ground and a brisk of ice as we start Monday morning.

:12:41. > :12:46.No such problems for England and Wales, with a mild start again. This

:12:47. > :12:51.weather front grinds to a halt across East Anglia, so the cloud

:12:52. > :12:58.lingers. Our rakes of rain on and off. The best of the sunshine to

:12:59. > :13:03.eastern areas. Some heavy local showers in Scotland and Northern

:13:04. > :13:09.Ireland. Again, they could turn wintry on higher ground. The weather

:13:10. > :13:14.front across the South gains energy on Monday into Tuesday morning. Here

:13:15. > :13:18.we could see up to two inches of rain, so minor flooding to take

:13:19. > :13:25.those into Tuesday morning. It does clear, and Tuesday has a bit of high

:13:26. > :13:31.pressure. It will probably be the hype -- the high point of the week.

:13:32. > :13:34.Some of the rain lingers in Kent and a few showers across the North of

:13:35. > :13:37.Scotland where it will be quite windy. But not as windy as in the

:13:38. > :13:47.rest of the week. Strong winds dominate all of us. Into Wednesday

:13:48. > :13:54.we start of fine bright but that weather front approaches. The rain

:13:55. > :13:58.is initially heavy in the West but it turns patchy as it moves

:13:59. > :14:04.eastwards. Later, the winds pick up and more persistent rain starts to

:14:05. > :14:11.edging. Widespread gales on Wednesday night, and up to 80 miles

:14:12. > :14:18.an hour possible Northern Ireland and Scotland. Prepare, there could

:14:19. > :14:23.be some damage and destructor as we go into the Thursday morning

:14:24. > :14:31.rush-hour will stop --. A very blustery day. We maintain that cold

:14:32. > :14:34.real Thursday night into Friday. Even with those strong winds, there

:14:35. > :14:43.is the risk of frost across eastern areas. Predominantly dry and bright.

:14:44. > :14:44.More and wet and windy weather to take us into the weekend.
