:00:22. > :00:28.Good afternoon. Nearly 5,000 homes remain without electricity across

:00:29. > :00:31.the UK after the recent storms. One of Britain's biggest power

:00:32. > :00:34.distributors, UK Power Networks, has denied that it has been too slow to

:00:35. > :00:36.reconnect people who lost their electricity and has promised to

:00:37. > :00:42.almost triple compensation for people, some of whom lost power

:00:43. > :00:53.before Christmas. Richard Lister is in the village of Yalding in Kent.

:00:54. > :01:00.The good news is that the lights are slowly coming back on. You can see

:01:01. > :01:04.that just down the road. Engineers have prepared all power lines

:01:05. > :01:09.damaged in the storm and there are now going house-to-house helping

:01:10. > :01:14.householders who may have lingering problems caused by water damage to

:01:15. > :01:20.their electrical circuits. For those people flooded out of course they

:01:21. > :01:25.still have a lot of work ahead. Everything will have to go. Sue

:01:26. > :01:31.picks through her good coverage deciding what she can keep and what

:01:32. > :01:37.has to be thrown away. The floodwaters were knee deep in her

:01:38. > :01:44.house and she still has no power. This is the freezer room. There is

:01:45. > :01:49.one freezer full up to the top which I am going to have to throw away. It

:01:50. > :01:54.is heartbreaking. The weather has cleared today giving engineers the

:01:55. > :02:00.chance to get to work in earnest. But it has been a slow process and

:02:01. > :02:04.people are fed up. There is too much emphasis on the right people getting

:02:05. > :02:09.the right help and not real people getting real help.

:02:10. > :02:13.Kent county council leader Paul Carter has been taking the brunt of

:02:14. > :02:17.some of that frustration but he says there is little more they have done.

:02:18. > :02:23.The emergency teams have worked well together and have been working since

:02:24. > :02:29.Christmas Eve and all over business coordinating the evacuation of

:02:30. > :02:35.homes. East Yalding has been flooded

:02:36. > :02:40.before, most recently in 2000. Villagers are asking white blood

:02:41. > :02:45.defences have not been improved. We had a similar event in 2000. You

:02:46. > :02:54.could not move in this village for fire and emergency services. We had

:02:55. > :02:58.everything, a bad situation was made easier by the support we got. We

:02:59. > :03:03.have no support here at all. In those parts of the UK where the

:03:04. > :03:07.storm that damage was worst, power is slowly coming back on. But

:03:08. > :03:12.engineers have struggled with falling trees and blocked roads. In

:03:13. > :03:19.Northern Ireland some 350 people still have no electricity. It is the

:03:20. > :03:24.same story for 1500 people in North Wales and 1600 in Cumbria. Back in

:03:25. > :03:30.Kent this woman's seller is underwater. Pumping it out is one

:03:31. > :03:36.more job to do on a long and miserable list. Most people here

:03:37. > :03:39.will probably get their power back today or tomorrow.

:03:40. > :03:42.But the company says it could be the end of the week before some

:03:43. > :03:47.properties in more isolated areas get their electricity back. Everyone

:03:48. > :03:52.is now braced for Monday when we could expect more torrential rain on

:03:53. > :03:56.this already saturated ground. And the possibility of more flooding to

:03:57. > :03:59.come. Fresh efforts begin this afternoon

:04:00. > :04:02.to resolve some of the issues still causing divisions in Northern

:04:03. > :04:04.Ireland. Negotiations chaired by the former American diplomat, Richard

:04:05. > :04:09.Haass, broke down on Christmas Eve with no agreement on parades, flags

:04:10. > :04:20.and past violence. Our Correspondent Claire Savage is in Belfast.

:04:21. > :04:24.Is this a hopeful sign? Some think it is. Dr Haass and Meghan

:04:25. > :04:28.O'Sullivan are to meet with the five main parties this afternoon to

:04:29. > :04:32.discuss those outstanding issues. What are they? Flags, parades and

:04:33. > :04:39.dealing with the legacy of the troubles. Speaking a few months ago,

:04:40. > :04:41.Dr Haass said this could be the last chance for all the five parties to

:04:42. > :04:47.reach agreement on those outstanding issues. They discussed into the

:04:48. > :04:51.early hours of Christmas Eve to try to resolve the issue and they are

:04:52. > :04:57.back again today. Dr Haass added that the Good Friday Agreement,

:04:58. > :05:01.signed 15 years ago, brought an end to the conflict in Northern Ireland

:05:02. > :05:07.and this draft that is on the table could yield on the piece. It is

:05:08. > :05:13.understood that discussions are due to start this afternoon at around

:05:14. > :05:19.2:30pm. The talks will resume again early on Monday morning at six

:05:20. > :05:23.o'clock, an early start for all the parties involved. Dr Haass once all

:05:24. > :05:33.of these issues to be resolved before the New Year as he has other

:05:34. > :05:35.engagements. England's cricketers have suffered

:05:36. > :05:39.yet another batting collapse and look to be heading for a fourth

:05:40. > :05:42.straight defeat in the Ashes. At the start of day three in Melbourne

:05:43. > :05:45.they'd been odds-on to score their first Test win of the series. But a

:05:46. > :05:48.catastrophic second innings, in which they lost their last five

:05:49. > :05:51.wickets for six runs, left Australia needing 201 to win with all ten

:05:52. > :05:57.wickets remaining. From the MCG, Dan Roan reports.

:05:58. > :05:59.English cricket may be under a cloud but here today prospects seemed

:06:00. > :06:04.brighter. With soaring temperatures, there was the chance

:06:05. > :06:08.to turn up the heat on their opponents. England needed just one

:06:09. > :06:14.more wicked to press home their advantage. But Australia added 40

:06:15. > :06:21.priceless runs. Frustration at boiling point when Adams was caught

:06:22. > :06:26.with 65. The England lead was still useful but now they had to build on

:06:27. > :06:31.it. Alastair Cook set about the task fluently. But England were about to

:06:32. > :06:34.collapse. Breast Alastair Cook trapped by Mitchell Johnson and then

:06:35. > :06:43.a spell of three wickets for one month as panic set in. England were

:06:44. > :06:50.left in crisis. Just as in the first innings, everything seemed to depend

:06:51. > :06:57.on Kevin Pietersen. He was taking no chances, a furious Johnson let him

:06:58. > :07:03.know exactly what he thought as the bad blood but admired this series

:07:04. > :07:12.resurfaced. But England were about to outdo themselves in this tour of

:07:13. > :07:16.horror shows. Nathan lion with five victims including Kevin Pietersen.

:07:17. > :07:21.Australia could not have made a better start in chasing their 231

:07:22. > :07:28.run target, reaching 30 without loss at the close. England now in grave

:07:29. > :07:31.danger of going 4- nil down. After arguably their worst batting display

:07:32. > :07:37.the series England have turned a promising position into a perilous

:07:38. > :07:39.one. Australia still have work to do but England may just have squandered

:07:40. > :07:44.their best chance of avoiding of whitewash.

:07:45. > :07:46.-- of whitewash. You can see more
