:00:11. > :00:17.A huge explosion rips through a station in southern Russia. At least

:00:18. > :00:20.50 are dead. A female suicide bomber carried out the attack which raises

:00:21. > :00:23.new security fears ahead of the Winter Olympics.

:00:24. > :00:28.Passengers are winched to safety after a fire on board the North Sea

:00:29. > :00:33.ferry. Two men are arrested. After the breast implant scandal, tighter

:00:34. > :00:41.rules for surgeons and curbs on marketing the operations.

:00:42. > :00:43.And Arsenal back on top of the Premier League with a win over

:00:44. > :01:06.Newcastle. Good evening. At least 15 people

:01:07. > :01:11.have been killed in an explosion at Gabriel we station in southern

:01:12. > :01:14.Russia. Investigators say a suicide bomber carried out the attack in the

:01:15. > :01:19.city of Volgograd. It is the latest in a series of bombings by

:01:20. > :01:22.separatist Islamist groups in the North caucuses and head of the

:01:23. > :01:30.Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, which begin in six weeks.

:01:31. > :01:34.Volgograd's Central railway station, and the moment a bomb went

:01:35. > :01:38.off in the entrance hall at lunchtime. Instantly killing many of

:01:39. > :01:42.the passengers. Investigators quickly said it was the work of a

:01:43. > :01:46.female suicide bomber, who had blown herself up inside of the building.

:01:47. > :01:52.At the exact spot where the metal detectors were. Arches, designed to

:01:53. > :01:56.stop weapons and explosives, from getting into the building. The

:01:57. > :02:01.Kremlin immediately ordered railway stations and airports to step up

:02:02. > :02:05.security. President Putin told his law-enforcement services to do

:02:06. > :02:11.everything that was necessary to keep people safe. Russia is

:02:12. > :02:16.grieving. The immediate concern is for the injured and relatives of the

:02:17. > :02:23.dead. The New Year is the big annual family holiday here. For 16 families

:02:24. > :02:28.today, it became a time of mourning. But Russia is also due to host the

:02:29. > :02:32.Winter Olympics in six weeks time. The eyes of the world are on the

:02:33. > :02:38.host city, Sochi, 400 miles from Volgograd. And have always been

:02:39. > :02:41.security worries about staging the Olympics so close to Russia's

:02:42. > :02:46.troubled republics of Chechnya and Dagestan.

:02:47. > :02:52.In June, one of the leaders of the Islamist insurgency, Doku Umarov,

:02:53. > :02:55.told on his -- called on his supporters to use maximum force to

:02:56. > :03:05.disrupt what he called the Satanic games. I have always said that

:03:06. > :03:12.Umarov's warning is serious stuff. I think a lot of people are responding

:03:13. > :03:19.to his clear order to organise more and more things in the area.

:03:20. > :03:23.The Winter Olympics are seen as a personal prestige project for

:03:24. > :03:25.President Putin, who has done all they can to reassure the

:03:26. > :03:33.International Olympic Committee that the Games will be safe. But Sochi is

:03:34. > :03:37.only 250 miles from the scene of a terrible school siege nine years ago

:03:38. > :03:45.that killed more than 300 people, half of them shall run. -- children.

:03:46. > :03:49.Today's explosion was a reminder that you cannot guarantee security

:03:50. > :03:56.in southern Russia. Daniel Samford joins me now. How realistic is it

:03:57. > :03:59.for the Russian authorities to talk of delivering security for their own

:04:00. > :04:06.people and for these Winter Olympics? Well, there will be

:04:07. > :04:09.extraordinary security in February. Drones will hover over the area,

:04:10. > :04:13.zooming in on numberplates and faces. No cars registered outside of

:04:14. > :04:21.the city will even be allowed into the place. There will be extensive

:04:22. > :04:26.monitoring of e-mails and telephone calls, physical security will be

:04:27. > :04:29.quite hard because it is bordered by mountains on one side and the Black

:04:30. > :04:34.Sea on other, which gives terrorists the opportunity to get into the

:04:35. > :04:37.town. But today tells us that the one thing everybody has been saying

:04:38. > :04:40.since the beginning, that you do not have to attack Sochi during the

:04:41. > :04:45.Games to cause embarrassment, any bomb in any city in Russia during

:04:46. > :04:49.the Games will cause maximum embarrassment to Russia and gain

:04:50. > :04:52.maximum international attention. That is exactly what the bombers

:04:53. > :04:58.want. Thank you. Two men have been

:04:59. > :05:04.arrested, one on suspicion of arson, after fire brought out on a -- broke

:05:05. > :05:11.out on a North Sea ferry last night. Six people were flown to

:05:12. > :05:15.hospital by RAF helicopter and the ferry was forced to return to

:05:16. > :05:20.Tyneside. There is a fire on board and everybody is coming to the

:05:21. > :05:24.lifeboats. Frightened and confused. In the middle of the night, 900

:05:25. > :05:29.passengers were dragged from their beds and told that there had been a

:05:30. > :05:35.fire on board. This photo taken by a passenger shows the damage done to

:05:36. > :05:38.the cabin. It was thick smoke. There was a lot of panic from some

:05:39. > :05:43.people, women and kids were panicking. Our cabin was five doors

:05:44. > :05:49.from the fire. A place filled with smoke. RAF helicopters winched six

:05:50. > :05:56.people to safety. And they were flown to Scarborough Hospital and

:05:57. > :05:58.treated for smoke inhalation. There were four doctors on-board

:05:59. > :06:04.travelling as passengers, who treated the people. Luckily, it was

:06:05. > :06:06.down to just six people who required evacuation, five of them crewmembers

:06:07. > :06:12.who had been involved with fighting the fire. And one was a pregnant

:06:13. > :06:17.lady. Police were waiting and everyone was held on board for four

:06:18. > :06:20.hours while interviews took place. Two men were arrested, one on

:06:21. > :06:23.suspicion of arson and the other on suspicion of affray. The other

:06:24. > :06:30.passengers were released, emotional and exalted. We were just going for

:06:31. > :06:35.a weekend to enjoy the day in Amsterdam and come home tonight.

:06:36. > :06:39.Never mind. Back to Carlisle. They may not be where they planned to

:06:40. > :06:42.beat a night but most passengers we spoke to were grateful that nobody

:06:43. > :06:46.had been seriously hurt. Many of them praised the staff on

:06:47. > :06:49.board for remaining calm but most importantly, containing a fire that

:06:50. > :06:56.could have been a lot more dangerous.

:06:57. > :06:59.For tonight, the MS King Seaways has become a floating hotel as

:07:00. > :07:05.passengers spend the night on board. They will finally finish the journey

:07:06. > :07:09.tomorrow. The leader of the UK Independence

:07:10. > :07:13.Party, Nigel Farage, has said that some refugees from the Civil War in

:07:14. > :07:16.Syria should be allowed to come to Britain. He said that Western

:07:17. > :07:20.countries had a duty to offer a number of them sanctuary. The

:07:21. > :07:24.government has refused to let any Syrian refugees into the UK, arguing

:07:25. > :07:31.that it is better to offer financial support.

:07:32. > :07:35.It is a conflict that has created hardship and displaced millions. But

:07:36. > :07:42.what should happen to the innocent victims? Nigel Farage, a strong

:07:43. > :07:46.advocate of reducing the number of economic migrants entering Britain,

:07:47. > :07:51.says that in this case, we need to be more generous. I think refugees

:07:52. > :07:57.are a different thing to economic migration. This country should, I

:07:58. > :08:02.think, on the spirit of the 1951 declaration on refugee status, and

:08:03. > :08:06.think there is a responsibility on all of us in the West to try to help

:08:07. > :08:12.some of those people fleeing Syria in fear of their lives.

:08:13. > :08:16.The United Nations is calling for a global effort to help those

:08:17. > :08:21.struggling in Syria. The UN wants richer countries to take in a total

:08:22. > :08:27.of 30,000 refugees. Germany has offered to accept 10,000 people.

:08:28. > :08:33.France is taking 500. In contrast, 18 EU countries including the UK are

:08:34. > :08:36.refusing to take any. But the UK is the most generous cash donor,

:08:37. > :08:43.pledging more than ?500 million in aid. The Prime Minister has visited

:08:44. > :08:47.refugee camps in Jordan to see some of the suffering for himself. Labour

:08:48. > :08:51.says it would allow around 500 people to enter Britain. Some

:08:52. > :08:55.Conservative backbenchers are urging the government to soften its line. I

:08:56. > :09:00.think the government will eventually change its mind. Britain is an open

:09:01. > :09:04.and holler and society. Clearly we cannot take all the refugees from

:09:05. > :09:06.Syria but think we should abide by our international commitments and

:09:07. > :09:13.take some. That might be 1000 or 2000. There was no sign of that

:09:14. > :09:15.changing. Despite the increasing pressure. But the government is more

:09:16. > :09:19.worried about immigration of a different kind. Restrictions on

:09:20. > :09:23.workers from Romania and Bulgaria will be lifted on Wednesday.

:09:24. > :09:29.Ministers do not know how many will come.

:09:30. > :09:32.Five men have been arrested following the death of a man found

:09:33. > :09:36.injured at a house in Newcastle under Lyme. Staffordshire police

:09:37. > :09:41.said that officers were called to a house in Wilmot drive yesterday

:09:42. > :09:45.evening. Five men aged between 28 and 57 were arrested at the scene

:09:46. > :09:49.and remain in police custody. The man has yet to be formally

:09:50. > :09:53.identified. A register of all breast implant operations is to be

:09:54. > :09:57.introduced in England following the scandal two years ago when thousands

:09:58. > :10:01.of women received faulty implants. There will also be a clamp-down on

:10:02. > :10:03.the advertising of cosmetic besiegers and new qualifications

:10:04. > :10:09.introduced for surgeons carrying them out. Our medical correspondent

:10:10. > :10:13.reports. Nearly 50,000 women in Britain were affected by the PIP

:10:14. > :10:17.breast implants care. The company used sub standard

:10:18. > :10:23.silicon gel which had a high rupture rate. Many women find it difficult

:10:24. > :10:27.to know whether they had been given PIP implants because of prerogative

:10:28. > :10:31.in. I was very upset and very stressed out. Why was expecting my

:10:32. > :10:38.baby, so wanted to know what was happening. It took a long time.

:10:39. > :10:44.Health ministers promised action. The plan scandal shone light on what

:10:45. > :10:47.has become a cowboy industry, an industry where there are murky

:10:48. > :10:51.practices. We have had to make sure that, as a government, we protect

:10:52. > :10:56.women and patients and consumers going forward and put in place

:10:57. > :11:00.strong measures to do that. It register for implants similar to

:11:01. > :11:02.that for hip operations will be set up in England. -- a register.

:11:03. > :11:04.that for hip operations will be set up in England. Other parts of the UK

:11:05. > :11:09.will decide whether they want to join. The Royal College of Surgeons

:11:10. > :11:12.will create new qualifications and professional standards for cosmetic

:11:13. > :11:17.surgery and the Department of Health says there will be a clamp-down --

:11:18. > :11:20.clamp-down on cosmetic surgery advertising such as two-for-one

:11:21. > :11:23.deals. The British Association of plastic surgeons said that

:11:24. > :11:29.aggressive marketing and special offers placed undue pressure on

:11:30. > :11:32.people considering treatment. We are pleased that the government will be

:11:33. > :11:36.coming down on marketing cosmetic surgery but we do not feel that they

:11:37. > :11:42.have gone far enough because we have been calling for an outright and so

:11:43. > :11:49.there is no advertising at all. The government's full proposals are

:11:50. > :11:53.respected early in the New Year. -- expected. Michael Schumacher has

:11:54. > :11:56.been injured in a skiing accident in France. The German, who retired from

:11:57. > :12:01.Formula one for the second time last year, has been taken by helicopter

:12:02. > :12:05.to hospital. It is understood that he suffered a head injury. A

:12:06. > :12:08.spokesperson said that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the

:12:09. > :12:13.accident and his condition is not thought to be serious.

:12:14. > :12:16.Football and Arsenal have returned to the top of the Premier League

:12:17. > :12:22.after beating Newcastle United. A header from Olivier Giroud was

:12:23. > :12:26.enough to secure a 1-0 victory. For Newcastle and Arsenal fans, the

:12:27. > :12:30.match programme was worth getting, if only to stare at the league

:12:31. > :12:34.table. Both are exceeding the expectations that many had of them

:12:35. > :12:37.even if the first half was not the best showcase their talents. It was

:12:38. > :12:46.until seconds before half-time that either side had a chance to go

:12:47. > :12:50.close. Arsenal needed a moment of inspiration. Some freethinking came

:12:51. > :12:58.from a free kick. The Walcott took it and Olivier Jarreau took it. --

:12:59. > :13:03.Olivier Jarreau. The Gunners knew a second would

:13:04. > :13:09.guarantee top spot at New Year. Chances came and went and were

:13:10. > :13:11.wasted. That left them open to a late Newcastle charge, throwing of

:13:12. > :13:18.putting forward but lacking direction. Arsenal finish on top,

:13:19. > :13:20.and in recent history, the leaders at the start of the year tends to

:13:21. > :13:22.still be there at the start of the at the start of the year tends to

:13:23. > :13:24.still be there at the season -- end of the season.

:13:25. > :13:29.Elsewhere, Everton beat Southampton at Goodison Park, 2-1. In the late

:13:30. > :13:35.kick-off, Chelsea are currently beating Liverpool 2-1 with just a

:13:36. > :13:39.few minutes left. Samuel Eto'o scoring the second for Chelsea. They

:13:40. > :13:43.went a goal behind after three minutes.

:13:44. > :13:48.In the Scottish Premiership, Celtic remain 11 points clear at the top of

:13:49. > :13:54.the table with a goal from Kris Commons an offer for them to secure

:13:55. > :13:58.victory against Inverness. And now the cricket. England face the

:13:59. > :14:05.prospect of a humiliating 5-0 Ashes defeat after losing the fourth test.

:14:06. > :14:12.With 231 to win, the Australians won, ugly, helped by a string of

:14:13. > :14:15.dropped catches by England fielders. Melbourne this morning and the

:14:16. > :14:19.fourth test had reached a crucial junction. Time and time again on

:14:20. > :14:25.this tour, England had failed. Now finally it seemed like things could

:14:26. > :14:28.go either way. With Australia resuming on 30 without loss but

:14:29. > :14:32.still needing 201 runs to win, England had genuine hope but knew

:14:33. > :14:36.they had to take every chance offered. Sadly for them, Alistair

:14:37. > :14:42.Cooke squandered two almost immediately. The first unfortunate.

:14:43. > :14:46.The second, unforgivable. England's lamentable fielding would cost them.

:14:47. > :14:52.Having been handed a brief, David Warner was eventually snared by Ben

:14:53. > :14:55.Stokes but it was a forced on. Chris Rogers was proving that the pitch

:14:56. > :14:59.was no excuse for batting collapses. The opener steered his

:15:00. > :15:05.side to victory with a brilliant century as England ran out of ideas.

:15:06. > :15:09.With Shane Watson in one-day-old, the end was quick. Having trailed by

:15:10. > :15:15.51 after the first innings, Australia romped home by eight

:15:16. > :15:18.wickets. -- one day mode. This is argued with

:15:19. > :15:21.the most painful defeat of all. England threw away a winning

:15:22. > :15:25.position. With the Ashes already gone, this could have been a fresh

:15:26. > :15:32.tart but instead the humiliation of a whitewash in Sydney next week now

:15:33. > :15:34.feels inevitable. There was more throughout the

:15:35. > :15:35.evening on the
