:00:11. > :00:16.Michael Schumacher, seven times the world motor racing champion is

:00:17. > :00:25.seriously ill tonight after a skiing accident. He was rushed to hospital.

:00:26. > :00:29.A suicide bomber attacks a railway station in Russia. At least 16 are

:00:30. > :00:33.dead. Passengers are winched to safety after a fire on board oar

:00:34. > :00:38.North Sea ferry. Two men are arrested.

:00:39. > :00:40.4-0 it is. And Australian celebrate victory in the fourth Test as

:00:41. > :01:03.England face an Ashes white wash. Good evening. The former world

:01:04. > :01:05.moator racing champion, Michael Schumacher, is in a critical

:01:06. > :01:10.condition in hospital after he suffered a head injury, skiing in

:01:11. > :01:15.the French Alps. He fell and hit a rock whilst skiing off piste with

:01:16. > :01:21.his son near the resort of Meribel. Tonight the former racing driver is

:01:22. > :01:23.in a coma after undergoing brain surgery.

:01:24. > :01:29.This evening, Michael Schumacher is being treated by trauma specialists

:01:30. > :01:32.in this hospital in Grenoble. In the past few minutes the hospital said

:01:33. > :01:37.he was admitted in a coma with a severe head injury which required

:01:38. > :01:41.immediate neurosurgery. Michael Schumacher is an experienced

:01:42. > :01:45.skier. He was off piste with his 14-year-old son when he had the

:01:46. > :01:50.fall, cracking his head against a rock. But he was wearing a helmet

:01:51. > :01:54.and he remained conscious. Officials at the resort, at the time, said the

:01:55. > :01:58.injury was serious but not life-threatening.

:01:59. > :02:02.Initially he was taken by helicopter to a small local medical centre but

:02:03. > :02:10.later, in a sign that his condition might be worse than thought, he was

:02:11. > :02:14.moved to a much bigger hospital. Now aged 44, Michael Schumacher is

:02:15. > :02:18.the most successful Formula 1 driver of all time.

:02:19. > :02:23.Winning the world title seven times. He finally retired only last year.

:02:24. > :02:28.He is a man highly atuned to the thrills of high speed sport but, of

:02:29. > :02:34.course, to its dangers, too. Well, hue Schofield reporting. He

:02:35. > :02:39.joins us live now from Paris. Things look pretty serious, don't they, for

:02:40. > :02:42.Schumacher tonight? Well they look much more serious than we thought

:02:43. > :02:44.they were, that's for sure. We were led to believe, really it was a

:02:45. > :02:48.light accident that wouldn't require much more than a bit of treatment in

:02:49. > :02:51.the local hospital. But now it seems it is serious and we have had this

:02:52. > :02:55.statement just in the last few minutes, really, saying he is in a

:02:56. > :03:00.critical state and he was indeed in a coma when he arrived in the

:03:01. > :03:05.hospital. His family are there. And this - France's top trauma

:03:06. > :03:08.specialist has flown down from Paris in another sign this is being taken

:03:09. > :03:12.very seriously indeed. It seems likely that he walked initially away

:03:13. > :03:17.from the injury or the accident, without too many signs of it doing

:03:18. > :03:20.any damage, but maybe at this first hospital, while he was being

:03:21. > :03:23.treated, maybe he lost consciousness there. Maybe there was some

:03:24. > :03:28.bleeding, we just don't know. Thank you very much.

:03:29. > :03:32.At least 16 people have been killed in a huge explosion at a railway

:03:33. > :03:35.station in southern Russia. A suicide bomber carried out the

:03:36. > :03:39.attack in the city of Volgograd. It's the greatest in a series of

:03:40. > :03:43.bombings by separatist Islamist groups in the North Caucasus, ahead

:03:44. > :03:52.of the winter Olympic Games which begin in the Russian city of Sochi

:03:53. > :03:55.in six weeks' time. Volgograd's Central railway station

:03:56. > :03:59.inthe moment a bomb went off in the entrance hall at lunch time,

:04:00. > :04:03.instantly killing many of the passengers. Investigators at first

:04:04. > :04:08.said it was the work of a female suicide bomber who had blown herself

:04:09. > :04:12.up just inside the building, at the exact spot where the metal detectors

:04:13. > :04:18.were. Later, they said the bomber may in fact have been a man. The

:04:19. > :04:22.Kremlin immediately ordered railway stations and airports to step up

:04:23. > :04:26.security. President Putin told his law enforcement services to do

:04:27. > :04:31.everything that was necessary to keep people safe.

:04:32. > :04:36.Russia is grieving. The immediate concern is for the injured and the

:04:37. > :04:40.relatives of the dead. The New Year is the big, annual family holiday

:04:41. > :04:44.here. For 16 fwamlies today t became a time of mourning.

:04:45. > :04:48.-- it became. But Russia is also due to host the

:04:49. > :04:53.Winter Olympics in six weeks' time. The eyes of the world are on the

:04:54. > :04:57.host city, Sochi, just 400 miles from Volgograd.

:04:58. > :05:02.There have always been security worries about staging the Olympics,

:05:03. > :05:09.so close to Russia's troubled republics of Chechnya and Dagestan.

:05:10. > :05:14.In June, one of the leaders of the Islamist insurgency there, dom cue

:05:15. > :05:20.um rof called on his supporters to use maximum force to disrupt what he

:05:21. > :05:42.called, the satanic games. I was always saying that people were

:05:43. > :05:47.responding to cock due um rof's callings. President Putin has done

:05:48. > :05:56.all he can to reassure the international -- respond responding

:05:57. > :06:04.to Doku Umarov. It is not far from Beslan, the scene

:06:05. > :06:12.where children were killed nine years ago. Today's scene was just a

:06:13. > :06:15.reminder that you cannot guarantee security in Russia.

:06:16. > :06:20.Account Russian authorities realistically talk of guaranteeing

:06:21. > :06:23.safety in any way for their own people indeed and of course for the

:06:24. > :06:27.Olympic Games? Or the winter Olympics? Well, there will be

:06:28. > :06:32.extraordinary security in so muchia in an attempt to protect the

:06:33. > :06:35.athletes and spectators, drones will be hovering over the area with the

:06:36. > :06:40.ability to zoom in on people's faces and zoom in over number plates.

:06:41. > :06:44.There is antiaircraft missile battery. All cars registered outside

:06:45. > :06:48.Sochi will be banned from entering the city. There will be extensive

:06:49. > :06:52.surveillance systems to monitor phone calls and e-mails. Physical

:06:53. > :06:56.security will be quite difficult. It's bounded by very high mountains

:06:57. > :07:00.on one side and the Black Sea on the other which gives opportunities for

:07:01. > :07:05.anyone who wants to get into the area, unnoticed. Today reminds us

:07:06. > :07:08.that anyone wanting to make a point during the Sochi Winter Olympics

:07:09. > :07:13.doesn't have to do that in Sochi. Any bomb in any major city in Russia

:07:14. > :07:16.will attract maximum international attention, cause maximum

:07:17. > :07:22.embarrassment to President Putin's Government and that, of course, is

:07:23. > :07:25.what the bombers want. Here a voluntary register of all

:07:26. > :07:30.breast implant operations is to be set up in England. It follow the

:07:31. > :07:34.scandal involving dangerous implants supplied by the French company. PIP.

:07:35. > :07:38.New qualifications for cosmetic surgeons will be introduced, along

:07:39. > :07:42.with tighter rules on the marketing of procedures.

:07:43. > :07:47.The leader of the UK Independence Party, nighing ale Farage, has said

:07:48. > :07:51.some refugees from the war in Syria should be allowed to come to

:07:52. > :07:55.Britain. -- Nigel Farage. He said Western countries had a

:07:56. > :07:58.doubty to offer sang Toure. The Government has failed to let any

:07:59. > :08:07.refugees into the UK, arguing it is better to offer financial support.

:08:08. > :08:10.It's a conflict that has created hardship and displaced millions. But

:08:11. > :08:15.what should happen to the innocent victims? The UK leader, Nigel

:08:16. > :08:18.Farage, such a strong advocate of reducing the number of economic

:08:19. > :08:23.migrants entering Britain, says in this case we need to be more

:08:24. > :08:27.generous. I think refugees are a very different thing to economic

:08:28. > :08:33.migration. I think this country should honour the spirit of the 1951

:08:34. > :08:36.declaration on refugee status that was agreed and I think actually

:08:37. > :08:41.there is a responsibility on all of us in the free West to try to help

:08:42. > :08:45.some of those people fleeing Syria, literally in fear of their lives.

:08:46. > :08:48.The United Nations is calling for a global effort to help those

:08:49. > :08:53.struggling in Syria. The UN wants richer countries to take in a total

:08:54. > :09:01.of 30,000 refugees. Germany's offered to accept 10,000 people.

:09:02. > :09:06.France is taking 500, in contrast, 18 EU countries, including the UK,

:09:07. > :09:10.are refusing to take any. But the UK is the most generous cash donor,

:09:11. > :09:14.pledging more than ?500 million in aid.

:09:15. > :09:20.The Prime Minister has visited refugee camps in Jordan to see some

:09:21. > :09:25.of the suffering for himself. Labour says it'll allow around 500 people

:09:26. > :09:30.to enter Britain and some Conservative backbenchers are urging

:09:31. > :09:34.the Government to soften its mind. I think the Government will change its

:09:35. > :09:38.mind. Britain is an open and tolerant society. We can't take all

:09:39. > :09:42.the refugees from Syria but I think we should abid by international

:09:43. > :09:46.commitments and take some, 1,000 or 2,000. There is no sign of that

:09:47. > :09:49.changing yet, despite the increasing pressure but the Government's more

:09:50. > :09:53.worried about immigration of a different kind. Restrictions on

:09:54. > :09:56.workers from Romania and Bulgaria will be lifted on Wednesday and

:09:57. > :10:02.ministers don't know how many will come.

:10:03. > :10:05.Two men have been arrested, one on suspicion of arson, after fire broke

:10:06. > :10:11.out on a North Sea ferry shortly after it set sail from North Shields

:10:12. > :10:15.for amster da. Six people were flown to hospital by RAF helicopter and

:10:16. > :10:20.the ferry was forced to return to Tyneside.

:10:21. > :10:28.In the middle of the night, a fire on MS king seaways, with more than

:10:29. > :10:31.900 passengers on board. Frightened and confused they were dragged from

:10:32. > :10:36.their beds and up on to the decks. There is a fire on board. Everybody

:10:37. > :10:40.is coming to the lifeboats. This photo, taken by a passenger,

:10:41. > :10:45.shows the damage done to the cabin. It was really thick smoke. You could

:10:46. > :10:48.smell it. There was a lot of panic from some people, with kids,

:10:49. > :10:53.obviously they were panicking. Our cabin was five doors away from the

:10:54. > :10:58.fire. Quite scary as the whole place filled with smoke. RAF helicopters

:10:59. > :11:04.winched six people to safety. They were flown to Scarborough hospital

:11:05. > :11:07.and treatedes for smoke inhalation. Therefore four doctors on board,

:11:08. > :11:10.travelling as passengers. They treated the people. Luckily it was

:11:11. > :11:14.down to just six people requiring evacuation. Five of them being crew

:11:15. > :11:18.members who had been involved with fighting the fire and one was a

:11:19. > :11:23.prenanted lady. Police were waiting when the ferry returned to North

:11:24. > :11:28.North Shields. Passengers were then kept on board for more than four

:11:29. > :11:33.hours while they probable ducted inquiries. Two men were arrested,

:11:34. > :11:37.one on suspicion of arson, the other on suspicion of a fray. The other

:11:38. > :11:41.passengers were released. Emotional and exhausted We were going to go

:11:42. > :11:45.for a weekend, a couple of friends. Enjoy the day in Amsterdam, and come

:11:46. > :11:48.home tonight. Never mind. Back to Carlile. They may not be where they

:11:49. > :11:52.planned to be tonight but most passengers we spoke to were just

:11:53. > :11:56.grateful that nobody had been seriously hurt. Many of them praised

:11:57. > :12:00.staff on board for remaining calm but most importantly, containing a

:12:01. > :12:05.fire that could have been a lot more dangerous.

:12:06. > :12:10.So, for tonight, the MS cap king Seaway has become a floating hotel

:12:11. > :12:20.as mass injuries spend the night on board. -- MS King Seaway.

:12:21. > :12:22.Now, with the day's big sports news, Katie Gornall.

:12:23. > :12:26.Good evening. England are on course for an Ashes

:12:27. > :12:31.white wash after losing the fourth Test by eight wick totes go 4-0 down

:12:32. > :12:36.in the Series. Alistair Cook says he wants to continue as England captain

:12:37. > :12:40.but admits his latest defeat leaves his future uncertain.

:12:41. > :12:44.Melbourne this morning and the fourth Test had reached a crucial

:12:45. > :12:49.junction. Time and time again on this tour, England had failed. Now

:12:50. > :12:54.finally, it seemed like things could go either way.

:12:55. > :12:58.With Australia resuming on 30-0 but still needing a tricky 201 runs to

:12:59. > :13:03.win, England had genuine hope but knew they had to take every chance

:13:04. > :13:07.offered. Sadly for them, captain Alistair Cook squandered two almost

:13:08. > :13:12.immediately. The first unfortunate. The second unforgivable. England's

:13:13. > :13:17.lamentable fielding would cost them. Having been handed a reprieve, David

:13:18. > :13:21.Warner were eventually snared by Stokes but it would prove a false

:13:22. > :13:26.down. After two batting collapses yesterday, Chris Rodgers proved the

:13:27. > :13:30.pitch was no excuse. He steered his side to victory with a brilliant

:13:31. > :13:38.century after England ran out of idea. With Shane Watson in one day

:13:39. > :13:42.mode, the end was mercilessly quick. Australia had romped home by eight

:13:43. > :13:44.wickets. On a tour that has brugted daily disappointment, this is

:13:45. > :13:48.arguably the most painful defeat of all, with England throwing away a

:13:49. > :13:52.winning position. With the Ashes already gone, this could have been a

:13:53. > :13:57.fresh start. Instead, the humiliation of a 5-0 white wash in

:13:58. > :14:01.Sydney next week, now feels inevitable.

:14:02. > :14:05.Well it's been an eventful day in the Premier League. All the goals

:14:06. > :14:09.are coming up on match of the day 2, straight after the news, but if you

:14:10. > :14:13.want to know the results now. Here they come: Arsenal will end the year

:14:14. > :14:17.on top of the table after beating Newcastle United 1-0 at St James's's

:14:18. > :14:22.park. Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game to lift his side

:14:23. > :14:26.one point above Manchester City. Chelsea came depr behind to beat

:14:27. > :14:35.Liverpool 2-1. Liverpool drop to fifth. Lu scored his first goal in

:14:36. > :14:38.six matches for Everton -- Lukaku. Tottenham beat Stoke. Celtic remain

:14:39. > :14:43.unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership after a 1-0 victory over Inverness

:14:44. > :14:48.Caledonian Thistle. They were ahead after three minutes when Kris

:14:49. > :14:52.Commons fired in his 15th goal of the season. The win sees Celtic

:14:53. > :14:54.preserve their 11-point lead at the top of the table. That's all the

:14:55. > :15:00.sport for now. Thank you. The main news again: The

:15:01. > :15:04.former world motor racing champion, Michael Schumacher s critically ill

:15:05. > :15:06.in a coma tonight, following a skiing accident in France. More on

:15:07. > :15:09.that and on all today's millimetres. An amber warning in

:15:10. > :15:28.force. Yellow warning is i th Good evening.

:15:29. > :15:32.More heavy rain and strong winds are heading towards the Home Counties

:15:33. > :15:36.tonight, bringing the risk of further flooding. There are fears

:15:37. > :15:40.the rain could cause problem with the ground already waterlogged.

:15:41. > :15:43.Sarah Morris went to Guildford where they're still recovering from the

:15:44. > :15:47.Christmas storm. Five days ago, this is how central

:15:48. > :15:52.Guildford looked. A submerged landscape studded with marooned

:15:53. > :15:55.cars. The doors of buildings shut to the rising torrents but water

:15:56. > :15:59.finding its way in and up through the ground anyway.

:16:00. > :16:04.This was the scene today, the water back where it should be, but a damp

:16:05. > :16:07.residue left behind for cleaning by the business owners still recovering

:16:08. > :16:11.from the Christmas soaking. The water started to come in through

:16:12. > :16:13.the ceiling. We have got an
