:00:58. > :01:05.that they would no longer be needed. The hunt for Mikaeel Kular had moved

:01:06. > :01:08.from the streets of suburban Edinburgh to this rain-soaked wood

:01:09. > :01:11.in the Fife. His face had become familiar to all of us, the smiling

:01:12. > :01:18.three-year-old who had reportedly vanished from his bed. Almost 48

:01:19. > :01:22.hours after that report was received, Assistant Chief, the

:01:23. > :01:27.Malcolm Graham emerged from Edinburgh's police headquarters with

:01:28. > :01:33.grim news. Good morning, everyone. The investigation into the

:01:34. > :01:37.disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been wide-ranging and fast-moving.

:01:38. > :01:45.As a result of these inquiries, I can confirm that we have recovered

:01:46. > :01:54.the body of a young boy in Fife. Shortly before midnight.

:01:55. > :02:00.20 miles north of Edinburgh, a major crime scene investigation has begun

:02:01. > :02:04.in and around a bungalow in the town of Kirkaldy. The area currently

:02:05. > :02:07.sealed off includes the house and a woodland to the rear of the

:02:08. > :02:17.property, popular with local walkers. Mikaeel's mother, Rosdeep

:02:18. > :02:22.Kular, has been detained by police. The house is said to belong to a

:02:23. > :02:26.relative of her mother. Police say she had told them that she put her

:02:27. > :02:29.son to bed on Wednesday evening, when she went to check on him in the

:02:30. > :02:36.morning, he was gone. Hundreds of local people rallied to help with

:02:37. > :02:39.two days of searches, but there was no trace of Mikaeel. Some of those

:02:40. > :02:45.who had been involved laid flowers in his memory. Forensic teams have

:02:46. > :02:52.now arrived in Kirkaldy. There work year is likely to continue for many

:02:53. > :02:56.hours yet. -- their work year. Under Scottish law, Rosdeep Kular

:02:57. > :03:00.must be charged or released within a maximum of 24 hours, so we are

:03:01. > :03:07.expecting a further update from police later this afternoon.

:03:08. > :03:10.The former Conservative Party deputy chairman Lord McAlpine has died. He

:03:11. > :03:14.was 71. His family said he passed away peacefully last night at his

:03:15. > :03:16.home in Italy. Lord McAlpine, a close advisor to Margaret Thatcher,

:03:17. > :03:26.was more recently wrongly implicated in a child-abuse scandal. Alex

:03:27. > :03:29.Forsyth has this report. Lord McAlpine was at one time a very

:03:30. > :03:33.powerful figure within the Conservative Party. He was deputy

:03:34. > :03:38.chairman as well as treasurer in Margaret Thatcher's government. He

:03:39. > :03:42.was considered among the closest and most loyal aides. Known as a jovial

:03:43. > :03:47.and cultured man, outside of his political career, he was an author,

:03:48. > :03:51.art collector, property developer and fundraiser. He spent the later

:03:52. > :03:57.years of his life out of the public eye, running a bed and breakfast in

:03:58. > :04:01.southern Italy. Most recently, Lord McAlpine was wrongly implicated in

:04:02. > :04:04.child sex abuse allegations by the BBC Newsnight programme, for which

:04:05. > :04:09.she received an apology and a substantial damages. Today, he was

:04:10. > :04:12.described by the Prime Minister as a dedicated supporter of the

:04:13. > :04:16.Conservative Party. David Cameron said his thoughts are with his

:04:17. > :04:20.family. In other tributes, he was called a man of integrity who made a

:04:21. > :04:21.huge contribution to public life. Lord McAlpine, who's died at the age

:04:22. > :04:30.of 71. Two Britons are now known to be

:04:31. > :04:35.among the 21 people killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan. One

:04:36. > :04:39.of those who died was a Labour Party candidate in the forthcoming

:04:40. > :04:41.European elections. The bomb exploded outside a busy restaurant

:04:42. > :04:49.frequented by westerners in the capital city, Kabul. Mike Wooldridge

:05:26. > :05:29.attacks. The UN lost four of its staff. We are very shocked, and we

:05:30. > :05:33.are very sad, and it is a very heavy day for the UN in Afghanistan. The
