:00:21. > :00:25.Hello, very good afternoon. Police are questioning the mother of
:00:26. > :00:32.three-year-old Mikaeel Kular after the discovery of a body of a young
:00:33. > :00:35.boy in woodland in Fife. Mikaeel's disappearance in Edinburgh on
:00:36. > :00:39.Thursday sparked a massive police search. This afternoon a body was
:00:40. > :00:43.removed from woods at the rear of a bungalow in the town of Kirkcaldy.
:00:44. > :00:47.Our correspondent, Robert Hall is there. Robert. Tonight, Scotland's
:00:48. > :00:51.First Minister echoed the views of the community in Edinburgh,
:00:52. > :00:57.referring to a harrowing development in a story which touched people's
:00:58. > :01:01.heart. Late this afternoon an ambulance rolled down the road under
:01:02. > :01:07.the trees close to this residential street taking the child's body away.
:01:08. > :01:10.In rain soaked woodland, 20 miles from Mikaeel Kular's home in
:01:11. > :01:15.Edinburgh, the forensic teams move carefully around the discover I ril
:01:16. > :01:20.which dashed the hopes of so many. An investigation into the
:01:21. > :01:25.disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been wide-ranging and fast moving.
:01:26. > :01:35.As a result of these inquiries, I can confirm that we've recovered the
:01:36. > :01:44.body of a young boy in Fife shortly before midnight. Mikaeel's face had
:01:45. > :01:47.become familiar to all of us, the smiling three-year-old who
:01:48. > :01:50.reportedly vanished from his bed. The search for him has ended on a
:01:51. > :01:56.quiet Kirkcaldy housing estate, close to a bungalow which, the BBC
:01:57. > :02:00.understands, belongs to an aunt. Today, the house, and its garden,
:02:01. > :02:04.containing a child's trampoline, have been sealed off. The police
:02:05. > :02:12.activity is concentrated in the wood beyond the garden fence. Mikaeel's
:02:13. > :02:17.mother, 33-year-old, Rosdeep Kular, has been held in police custody. The
:02:18. > :02:21.hunt for her son began, according to senior officers, after she told them
:02:22. > :02:25.he had gone missing. The Kular's live at Ferry Gait Crescent in the
:02:26. > :02:30.east of Edinburgh. Police were alerted at 7.15 am on Thursday
:02:31. > :02:32.morning. By 5.00pm that evening, emergency services, backed by
:02:33. > :02:38.hundreds of volunteers, had begun a search which would last two-days. As
:02:39. > :02:46.darkness fell the police operation moved across the Firth Firth of
:02:47. > :02:51.Forth to Kirkcaldy. At 1.10 am this morning they announced a body had
:02:52. > :02:56.been found. So, so sad. Poor wee boy. Throughout the day families in
:02:57. > :03:01.Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy have been laying flowers in Mikaeel's memory.
:03:02. > :03:04.When I heard the news, it was -- I was devastated that this is what
:03:05. > :03:09.happened. We wanted to come and pay our respects. Myself and it's
:03:10. > :03:15.absolutely heartbreaking. Heartbreaking. Forensic work in and
:03:16. > :03:22.around the house in Kirkcaldy is expected to continue for many hours
:03:23. > :03:27.yet. Rosdeep Kular was formally detained at midnight last night.
:03:28. > :03:32.Under Scottish law there has to be a maximum of 24-hours within which she
:03:33. > :03:35.is either charged or released. Police Scotland say they do hope to
:03:36. > :03:39.provide an update within that time frame. Kate. Robert, thank you. The
:03:40. > :03:43.Senior Conservatives have been paying tribute to Lord McAlpine, the
:03:44. > :03:48.former party treasurer who has died at the age of 71. His family said he
:03:49. > :03:51.passed away peacefully last night at his home in Italy. Lord McAlpine, a
:03:52. > :03:55.close adviser to Margaret Thatcher, was more recently wrongly implicated
:03:56. > :04:01.in a child abuse scandal. Alex Forsyth reports. A towering figure
:04:02. > :04:04.who made a huge contribution to public life. That's how Lord
:04:05. > :04:10.McAlpine has been described in tributes today. He was a powerful
:04:11. > :04:13.player in the Conservative Party as both Deputy Chairman and treasurer.
:04:14. > :04:18.His support of Margaret Thatcher was unwaivering. He was a loyal aide and
:04:19. > :04:24.friend. But former colleagues remember the man, as well as the
:04:25. > :04:29.politician. He was almost renaissance man. He'd done many
:04:30. > :04:37.things and been good at pretty well all of them, industry, commerce, the
:04:38. > :04:44.arts, politics. He was trustworthy. He was funny. Puckish almost in his
:04:45. > :04:47.manner. He made many good friends. Lord McAlpine's longstanding support
:04:48. > :04:53.for the Conservative Party was briefly broken when he backed the
:04:54. > :04:56.eurosceptic referendum group in the 1997 general election. He soon
:04:57. > :05:01.returned to the fold. Over the years, his fundraising expertise
:05:02. > :05:06.raised millions for the party and helped bank roll three successful
:05:07. > :05:11.general elections. In 2012 he was wrongly implicated by the BBC's
:05:12. > :05:16.Newsnight programme in child sex abuse allegations for which he
:05:17. > :05:28.received an apology and substantial damages. Lord McAlpine was known as
:05:29. > :05:34.a cull toured man. A cultured man. Lord McAlpine who has died at the
:05:35. > :05:38.age of 71. The Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, says the party's
:05:39. > :05:41.former Chief Executive, Lord Rennard, should not rejoin the
:05:42. > :05:44.party's group in the House of Lords unless he apologises to women who
:05:45. > :05:49.claim they've been sexually harassed. An internal investigation
:05:50. > :05:53.found the claims were "broadly credible", but could not be proved
:05:54. > :05:59.beyond doubt. Lord Rennard has always denied the allegations. Two
:06:00. > :06:02.Britons are now known to be among the 21 people killed in a suicide
:06:03. > :06:06.bombing in Afghanistan. One of those who died was a Labour Party
:06:07. > :06:12.candidate in the forthcoming European elections. The the bomb was
:06:13. > :06:16.detonated outside a busy restaurant frequented by Westerners in the
:06:17. > :06:19.capital city Kabul. From Kabul, Carolyn Wyatt sent this report. The
:06:20. > :06:23.wreckage of what had been a special place. For Westerners and wealthier
:06:24. > :06:28.Afghan alikes. One of the rare restaurants in this city where they
:06:29. > :06:33.could mix and relax. All that shattered in a heartbeat by a
:06:34. > :06:37.suicide bomber and two attackers armed with AK-47 s they went through
:06:38. > :06:41.the restaurant, shooting dead families and colleagues out for
:06:42. > :06:45.Friday night dinner. Amongst the dead, four of the UN staff here, as
:06:46. > :06:48.well as the Head of the International Monetary Fund in
:06:49. > :06:52.Afghanistan. Today, it was confirmed that one of the British victims was
:06:53. > :06:56.a Labour candidate for the European elections called Del Singh. Today,
:06:57. > :07:01.his friends paid tribute to him and expressed their shock. The other
:07:02. > :07:05.Britton skilled was former soldier, Simon Chase, a father of two from
:07:06. > :07:09.Liverpool. He had settled with his fiancee in Northern Ireland where he
:07:10. > :07:12.worked as a doorman in a bar. The staff that worked with him commented
:07:13. > :07:16.that he was a true gentleman, great friend and had a nature that
:07:17. > :07:25.couldn't see the wrong in anyone. They are obviously very upset today.
:07:26. > :07:29.Security here was seen as tight. The suicide bomber bypassed all of that
:07:30. > :07:35.by simply blowing up the entrance, with it the sense that anywhere in
:07:36. > :07:39.Kabul could be seen as secure. Today, the clearing up began in
:07:40. > :07:45.earnest, neighbours of the restaurant are still in shock. This
:07:46. > :07:50.woman lives in the house opposite. She told me what happened. All of a
:07:51. > :07:56.sudden the blast happened. I screamed. We jumped. There was
:07:57. > :08:03.machine gun, heavy firing. The I was shaking. I hide myself behind the
:08:04. > :08:09.curtain to stay safe, in a safe place. A lot of people has passed
:08:10. > :08:13.away and got killed. I can see the blood outside. So that's sad. It
:08:14. > :08:18.makes me very upset. Hopefully, I'm going to get over it. But it's not
:08:19. > :08:22.eatsy. I knew the owner of the restaurant, I knew the guards. This
:08:23. > :08:26.year, Afghanistan faces elections, then the withdrawal of NATO combat
:08:27. > :08:35.troops. This attack, in the heart of the capital, has again shattered
:08:36. > :08:39.hopes of peace. Now in tennis, Andy Murray has reached the fourth round
:08:40. > :08:43.of the Australian Open after beating Feliciano Lopez in straight-sets. He
:08:44. > :08:47.described the win as a "big step up" as one of the first serious tests to
:08:48. > :08:54.his form after undergoing back surgery. Patrick Geary has more. It
:08:55. > :08:57.might not look it but by Melbourne's recent standards this was a close
:08:58. > :09:01.day, much more pleasant conditions to watch and play tennis. Andy
:09:02. > :09:05.Murray will certainly have felt more at home. It took him a while to
:09:06. > :09:10.calibrate his radar against Feliciano Lopez. The Spaniard could
:09:11. > :09:14.duck out of that, but there was no avoiding Murray in full flow. When
:09:15. > :09:18.if matters he has an uncanny ability to be in the right praise place at
:09:19. > :09:23.the right time. It earned him the first set in the tie-break. The
:09:24. > :09:28.world number 27 was being out witted by the second set he seemed to know
:09:29. > :09:32.his fate. Lopez's serve went again in the first game of the third. The
:09:33. > :09:37.Gulfing class between the players growing as the match went on. By the
:09:38. > :09:43.end Lopez had no answer to Murray, who is yet to lose a set in three
:09:44. > :09:48.matches. Today was a big step up for me. It's the best win I've had since
:09:49. > :09:54.my surgery. I'm happy with that. In the interview room Murray is talking
:09:55. > :09:58.down his chances of winning this Grand Slam. On the court he is
:09:59. > :10:02.suggesting otherwise. There's more throughout the evening on the BBC
:10:03. > :10:05.News Channel, as ever, we are back with the late news at 10.00pm. Now
:10:06. > :10:07.on BBC One, it's time
