:00:10. > :00:14.questioned tonight after the body of a child is found. News of the

:00:15. > :00:21.discovery in woodland overnight was revealed by police.

:00:22. > :00:28.I can confirm that we have recovered the body of a young boy in Fife.

:00:29. > :00:33.Today families in Edinburgh and Kirkaldy have been leaving flowers

:00:34. > :00:37.in Mikaeel's memory. Also in tonight's programme:

:00:38. > :00:40.Tributes are paid to the former Conservative Party grandee Lord

:00:41. > :00:44.McAlpine, who's died at the age of 71.

:00:45. > :00:49.Two Britons are among 21 people killed in a suicide bombing in

:00:50. > :00:53.Afghanistan. And Murray marches on. The Wimbledon

:00:54. > :00:55.champion reaches the fourth round of the Australian Open, making a big

:00:56. > :01:25.step up after back surgery. Hello. A very good evening to you.

:01:26. > :01:28.Police are continuing to question the mother of three year old Mikaeel

:01:29. > :01:32.Kular after the discovery of the body of a young boy in woodland in

:01:33. > :01:34.Fife. Mikaeel's disappearance in Edinburgh on Thursday sparked a

:01:35. > :01:38.massive police search. Earlier, a body was removed from woods at the

:01:39. > :01:41.rear of a bungalow believed to belong to an aunt of the boy, in

:01:42. > :01:46.Kirkcaldy. Our correspondent Robert Hall is in Edinburgh tonight with

:01:47. > :01:51.more. Robert. Kate, last night a senior officer

:01:52. > :01:54.stood on the steps to give the news that tragically the search for

:01:55. > :02:00.Mikaeel Kular was over. Within an hour, Mikaeel's mother had been

:02:01. > :02:04.detained. Under Scottish law, she must be charged or arrested within a

:02:05. > :02:10.24 hour period. The police have just told us that they hope to issue an

:02:11. > :02:14.up date within the next half-hour. In rain-soaked woodland 20 miles

:02:15. > :02:17.from Mikaeel Kular's home in Edinburgh, the forensic teams move

:02:18. > :02:25.carefully around the discovery which dashed the hopes of so many. The

:02:26. > :02:28.investigation into the disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been

:02:29. > :02:33.wide-ranging and fast moving. As a result of these enquiries, I can

:02:34. > :02:46.confirm that we have recovered the body of a young boy in Fife shortly

:02:47. > :02:49.before midnight. Mikaeel's face had become familiar

:02:50. > :02:52.to all of us, the smiling three-year-old who had reportedly

:02:53. > :02:58.vanished from his bed. The search for him has ended on a quiet

:02:59. > :03:03.Kirkcaldy housing estate close to a bungalow which the BBC understands

:03:04. > :03:06.belongs to an aunt. Today, the house and its garden, containing a

:03:07. > :03:11.child's trampoline, have been sealed off, but the police activity is

:03:12. > :03:20.concentrated in the wood beyond the garden fence. Mikaeel's mother,

:03:21. > :03:23.33-year-old Rosdeep Kular, has been held in police custody. The hunt for

:03:24. > :03:30.her son began according to police officers after she told them he had

:03:31. > :03:33.gone missing. The Kulars live in Ferry Gait Crescent in the east of

:03:34. > :03:38.Edinburgh. Police were alerted at 7.15 on Thursday morning. By five

:03:39. > :03:41.that evening, emergency services backed by hundreds of volunteers had

:03:42. > :03:46.begun a search which would last for two days. As darkness fell, the

:03:47. > :03:50.police operation moved across the Firth for the Kirkcaldy, and at ten

:03:51. > :03:55.past one this morning, they announced that a body had been

:03:56. > :04:00.found. I have two kids of my own. It is just so sad. The poor wee boy.

:04:01. > :04:04.Devastating news for a community which had so wish for a positive

:04:05. > :04:07.outcome. Throughout the day, families in Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy

:04:08. > :04:12.have been laying flowers in Mikaeel's memory. When we heard the

:04:13. > :04:15.news, we were just devastated that this was what has happened, so we

:04:16. > :04:20.just wanted to come and pay our respects. I am a mother myself, and

:04:21. > :04:24.it is absolutely heartbreaking. Heartbreaking. The community in

:04:25. > :04:27.north Edinburgh have been praised for their efforts during the search

:04:28. > :04:36.for Mikaeel. 15-year-old Conor Dixon was among them. Tonight he spoke at

:04:37. > :04:39.a service held in Mikaeel's memory. The community have been amazing.

:04:40. > :04:43.There have been so many people trying to find him. I never knew the

:04:44. > :04:47.community was this big and so helpful. It just makes me proud to

:04:48. > :04:51.be from this community, to be honest with you.

:04:52. > :04:54.Investigations at Kirkcaldy and in Edinburgh are still at an early

:04:55. > :05:01.stage. There are many questions to be answered for police and public

:05:02. > :05:04.alike. Tonight, Scotland's first Minister joined the tributes to the

:05:05. > :05:08.local community and the efforts they had made in trying to find Mikaeel.

:05:09. > :05:14.He said it was a story which had moved many in Scotland and beyond.

:05:15. > :05:17.Police Scotland say they hope to provide us with a further update on

:05:18. > :05:22.their investigation within the next half-hour, Kate. OK Robert, thank

:05:23. > :05:25.you for that. Senior Conservatives have been

:05:26. > :05:28.paying tribute to Lord McAlpine, the former party treasurer who has died

:05:29. > :05:31.at the age of 71. His family said he passed away

:05:32. > :05:34.peacefully last night at his home in Italy. Lord McAlpine, a close

:05:35. > :05:38.advisor to Margaret Thatcher, was recently wrongly implicated in a

:05:39. > :05:49.child abuse scandal. Alex Forsyth reports. A towering figure who made

:05:50. > :05:52.a huge contribution to public life. That's how Lord McAlpine has been

:05:53. > :05:55.described in tributes today. He was a powerful force in the Conservative

:05:56. > :05:58.party as both Deputy Chairman and Treasurer. But perhaps his most

:05:59. > :06:01.significant role was as Margaret Thatcher's political soul mate. His

:06:02. > :06:05.support of her was unwavering, as a loyal aide and friend. Former

:06:06. > :06:09.colleagues remember the man as well as the politician.

:06:10. > :06:13.He was almost a Renaissance man. He'd done many things and been good

:06:14. > :06:21.at pretty well all of them. Industry, commerce, the arts and

:06:22. > :06:28.politics. He was trustworthy. He was funny, Puckish almost in his manner.

:06:29. > :06:31.And he made many good friends. Lord McAlpine's long-standing

:06:32. > :06:33.support for the Conservative party was briefly broken when he backed

:06:34. > :06:41.the Euro-sceptic Referendum Party, led by Sir James Goldsmith, in the

:06:42. > :06:45.1997 general election. But he soon returned to the fold. Over the

:06:46. > :06:47.years, his fundraising expertise raised millions for the party, and

:06:48. > :06:56.helped bankroll three successful general elections. In 2012, he was

:06:57. > :06:59.wrongly implicated in child sex abuse allegations by the BBC's

:07:00. > :07:04.Newsnight programme, for which he received an apology and substantial

:07:05. > :07:06.damages. Lord McAlpine was an art collector, property developer and

:07:07. > :07:09.author, but it was his dedication to the Conservative party that the

:07:10. > :07:16.Prime Minister, David Cameron, praised today. His friends praised

:07:17. > :07:19.his character and called him a man of integrity.

:07:20. > :07:38.Lord McAlpine, who's died at the age of 71.

:07:39. > :07:43.There are reports tonight that a British man has been shot dead and

:07:44. > :07:46.his wife injured after their yacht was attacked in the Caribbean. The

:07:47. > :07:49.incident happened off the island of St Lucia. Caribbean authorities said

:07:50. > :07:53.an investigation had been launched. Two Britons are known to be among

:07:54. > :07:56.the 21 people killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan. One of those

:07:57. > :07:59.who died was a Labour party candidate in the forthcoming

:08:00. > :08:01.European elections. The bomb was detonated outside a busy restaurant

:08:02. > :08:05.frequented by westerners in the capital city Kabul. From there,

:08:06. > :08:08.Caroline Wyatt sent this report. The wreckage of what had been a

:08:09. > :08:11.special place, for Westerners and wealthy Afghans alike. One of the

:08:12. > :08:15.rare restaurants in this city where they could mix and relax. All that

:08:16. > :08:19.shattered in a heartbeat by a suicide bomber and two attackers

:08:20. > :08:21.armed with AK-47s. They went through the restaurant, shooting dead

:08:22. > :08:27.families and colleagues out for Friday night dinner. Amongst the

:08:28. > :08:32.dead, four of the UN staff here, as was the head of the International

:08:33. > :08:35.Monetary Fund in Afghanistan. Today, it was confirmed that one of the

:08:36. > :08:38.British victims was a Labour candidate for the European elections

:08:39. > :08:44.called Del Singh. Today his friends paid tribute to him and expressed

:08:45. > :08:48.their shock. The other Briton killed was former soldier Simon Chase, a

:08:49. > :08:51.father of two from Liverpool. He'd settled with his fiancee in Northern

:08:52. > :08:56.Ireland, where he worked as a doorman at a bar. The staff that

:08:57. > :08:59.worked with him commented that he was a true gentleman, a great

:09:00. > :09:03.friend, and had a nature that couldn't see the wrong in anyone.

:09:04. > :09:06.Obviously they are very upset today. Here in Kabul, the clean-up began in

:09:07. > :09:11.earnest today as many mourned the loss of friends and family. This

:09:12. > :09:14.restaurant was one of the very few in Kabul where Westerners and others

:09:15. > :09:21.felt safe, because security here was seen as tight. But the suicide

:09:22. > :09:25.bomber bypassed all of that by blowing up the entrance, and with

:09:26. > :09:29.it, the sense that anywhere in Kabul could be seen as secure. Neighbours

:09:30. > :09:35.of the restaurant are still in shock. Nadia Ramani lives in the

:09:36. > :09:41.house opposite. She told me what happened. All of a sudden, the blast

:09:42. > :09:50.happened. I screamed and jumped. There was machine gun, heavy firing.

:09:51. > :10:00.I was shaking. I hide myself behind the curtain to stay safe in a safe

:10:01. > :10:04.place. A lot of people has passed away and got killed, and I can see

:10:05. > :10:08.the blood outside, so that's sad. It makes me very upset. Hopefully I'm

:10:09. > :10:11.going to get over it, but it's not easy, because I knew the owner of

:10:12. > :10:12.the restaurant, and I knew the guards.

:10:13. > :10:16.This year, Afghanistan faces elections, then the withdrawal of

:10:17. > :10:19.NATO combat troops. This attack in the heart of the capital has again

:10:20. > :10:25.shattered hopes of peace. Caroline Wyatt, BBC News, Kabul.

:10:26. > :10:29.Syria's main political opposition group the Syrian National Coalition

:10:30. > :10:32.has voted in favour of attending peace talks next week, aimed at

:10:33. > :10:42.ending the country's bloody civil war. The group had been under

:10:43. > :10:45.pressure from its Western and Arab sponsors to attend the talks in

:10:46. > :10:49.Geneva. President Assad's regime has already confirmed its presence at

:10:50. > :10:51.the summit. France's First Lady, Valerie

:10:52. > :10:54.Trierweiler, has left the Paris hospital where she was admitted a

:10:55. > :10:57.week ago following reports of an affair between President Hollande

:10:58. > :10:59.and an actress. In her first public comments since the allegations

:11:00. > :11:03.emerged, Valerie Trierweiler said she was very touched by all the

:11:04. > :11:06.messages of support she had received.

:11:07. > :11:10.Allies of the Liberal Democrat peer Lord Rennard are threatening legal

:11:11. > :11:16.action unless he's welcomed back into the party's parliamentary group

:11:17. > :11:19.in the Lords. Party Leader Nick Clegg has said the whip shouldn't be

:11:20. > :11:24.restored until Lord Rennard apologises to women who claim

:11:25. > :11:36.they've been sexually harassed him. Lord Rennard denies the allegations.

:11:37. > :11:39.Let's get more on this from our political correspondent Iain Watson

:11:40. > :11:45.is in Westminster. Iain, what more can you tell us? Lord Rennard is one

:11:46. > :11:49.of the most powerful members of his party, its former chief executive,

:11:50. > :11:52.and just a few days ago, an independent investigations that

:11:53. > :11:55.allegations against him of sexual misconduct towards some women

:11:56. > :12:01.members of the party couldn't be proven beyond reasonable doubt, so

:12:02. > :12:05.on Monday, he was invited to come here and resume his seat alongside

:12:06. > :12:08.his Liberal Democrat colleagues. But Nick Clegg says he should be barred

:12:09. > :12:12.from doing so until he apologises to some of the women for causing

:12:13. > :12:15.distress. He says he would like to see that happen, but the snag is

:12:16. > :12:20.that under the party rules, he has no power to make it happen. Allies

:12:21. > :12:23.of Lord Rennard are saying that if he so much as tries, his party could

:12:24. > :12:27.end up being challenged in the courts. In another interesting

:12:28. > :12:31.development, a message from Lord Rennard briefly appeared on Facebook

:12:32. > :12:35.and was spotted by Channel 4. In it he said he had tried to apologise to

:12:36. > :12:40.some complainants in the past and had now been rebuffed. He now can't

:12:41. > :12:43.apologise for legal reasons, and doesn't think an apology is

:12:44. > :12:48.justified, so that is a direct challenge to his party leader, and

:12:49. > :12:51.really the last thing that Nick Clegg needs ahead of a difficult

:12:52. > :12:55.year of European elections and his party conference in just a few

:12:56. > :12:58.weeks. Thank you. The BBC journalist and broadcaster

:12:59. > :13:02.Komla Dumor has died suddenly at his home in London. He was 41 and had

:13:03. > :13:05.suffered a heart attack. The BBC World News presenter joined the

:13:06. > :13:09.corporation after a decade of journalism in Ghana where he was

:13:10. > :13:12.born. The BBC said Komla was a leading light of African journalism,

:13:13. > :13:22.with his energy and enthusiasm shining through every story he told.

:13:23. > :13:30.Now we turn to the sport, and you can see Katie Gornall at the BBC

:13:31. > :13:34.Sport Centre. Premier league results coming up,

:13:35. > :13:37.but first, Andy Murray has cruised into the fourth round of the

:13:38. > :13:40.Australian open after beating Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. He

:13:41. > :13:46.described the winners a big setup after undergoing back surgery.

:13:47. > :13:50.Patrick Geary reports. It might not look it, but by Melbourne's recent

:13:51. > :13:53.standards, this was a cold day, with temperatures half of what they had

:13:54. > :13:58.been, much more pleasant conditions to watch and play tennis. Andy

:13:59. > :14:05.Murray will certainly have felt more at home, although it took a while to

:14:06. > :14:08.calibrate. When it matters, he has an uncanny ability to be in the

:14:09. > :14:12.right place at the right time, and it earned him a first set in the

:14:13. > :14:18.tie-break. Lopez has represented Murray's biggest challenge since

:14:19. > :14:22.returning from injury. By the second set, he seems to know his fate. His

:14:23. > :14:27.serve went again in the first set of the third, gulf between the players

:14:28. > :14:32.growing as the match went on. By the end, he simply had no answer to

:14:33. > :14:35.Murray, who has yet to lose a set in three matches. I will get tested

:14:36. > :14:40.more and more as the tournament goes on, but today was a big step up for

:14:41. > :14:44.me, the best one I have had since my surgery, so I'm happy with that. In

:14:45. > :14:46.the interview room, Murray is talking down his chances of winning

:14:47. > :14:51.this Grand Slam. On the court, he is suggesting

:14:52. > :14:56.otherwise. Patrick Geary, BBC News. There were goals in all seven of

:14:57. > :14:59.today's Premier league games. You can see them on Match Of The Day

:15:00. > :15:03.which follows the news. If you don't want to know the score is, it is

:15:04. > :15:05.time to turn away. Manchester City have become the

:15:06. > :15:08.quickest side in Premier league history to score 100 goals in a

:15:09. > :15:12.season after their 4-2 win over Cardiff. Eddie Dzeko brought up the

:15:13. > :15:17.landmark with the opening goal at the Etihad.

:15:18. > :15:21.At the other end of the table, pressure is building on West Ham

:15:22. > :15:25.manager Sam Allardyce. His side have dropped into the relegation zone

:15:26. > :15:28.after a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Arsenal held onto

:15:29. > :15:34.their 1-point lead over magister city at the top of the table with a

:15:35. > :15:39.2-0 over Fulham. Liverpool drew with Aston Villa, and Ryan Bennett's

:15:40. > :15:46.laced header gave Norwich a vital 1-0 win over Hull. In a Scottish

:15:47. > :15:48.Premiership, Danny Williamson scored his first goal for Inverness

:15:49. > :15:52.Caledonian Thistle to give them a 1-0 win over Aberdeen. Aberdeen's

:15:53. > :15:56.defeat means they are now 13 points adrift of leaders Celtic, who beat

:15:57. > :16:00.Motherwell three - zero. There were wins for Saint Mirren and Ross

:16:01. > :16:06.County, while bottom of the table hearts scrounged to late goals to

:16:07. > :16:09.win 3-3 at Saint Johnstone. In the Heineken Cup, Saracens grabbed the

:16:10. > :16:15.last place in the quarterfinals and country hence if fashion.

:16:16. > :16:20.They scored 11 tries. David Strett, recently left out of England's's six

:16:21. > :16:28.Nations squad, grabbed a hat-trick. Elsewhere, Exeter won in. Jonny

:16:29. > :16:35.Wilkinson kicked Toulon to 15-8 win over Glasgow.

:16:36. > :16:39.Here are all the quarterfinalists. Saracens will now play Ulster.

:16:40. > :16:43.Leicester qualify as one of the best runners-up. There are three French

:16:44. > :16:47.sides, but Wales is not represented. If you'd's netball is have made a

:16:48. > :16:51.winning start to their tri- Nations campaign in London.

:16:52. > :16:56.They beat Jamaica 46-38 in the copper box arena. England are third

:16:57. > :16:59.in the world, and played a team ranked directly above them, New

:17:00. > :17:00.Zealand, in the next match on Monday. And that is all the sport

:17:01. > :17:06.for now. Back to you, Kate. Finally, a 16-year-old boy from

:17:07. > :17:10.Bristol has set a new record by becoming the youngest person ever to

:17:11. > :17:13.trek to the South Pole. Lewis Clarke arrived this evening after taking

:17:14. > :17:15.almost seven weeks to complete a gruelling 700-mile journey from the

:17:16. > :17:24.Antarctic coast in temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius.

:17:25. > :17:27.Much more of course on all of today's stories on the BBC News

:17:28. > :17:37.Channel. That's all from me. Goodnight.

:17:38. > :17:45.Good evening. I thought we would start with a quick look at the

:17:46. > :17:49.latest radar sequence, which shows how wet we have been over the last

:17:50. > :17:52.seven or eight hours. It is wet in Northern Ireland, and this area of

:17:53. > :17:56.rain in the West, South West, gradually moving its way eastwards.

:17:57. > :18:01.It has been dry in the East of England over the last few hours.

:18:02. > :18:05.Notice the south-west quadrant of the UK which tends to dry up, they

:18:06. > :18:11.will be some clear spells, not completely dry. Temperatures drop

:18:12. > :18:15.down to -1 or two. A little ice around, maybe one or two patches of

:18:16. > :18:18.fog. The second part of the weekend will be much brighter than the first

:18:19. > :18:22.part, but it will be a slow start for the day in the East of Scotland.

:18:23. > :18:25.Maybe one or two showers still across the north and north-east of

:18:26. > :18:30.Northern Ireland, but in northern England, a lovely start to the day.

:18:31. > :18:33.It is cold, but a bright start to the day here. As you had further

:18:34. > :18:38.south again, maybe one or two patches of fog. Not completely dry,

:18:39. > :18:42.because there are one or two showers just gathering in the channel, and I

:18:43. > :18:45.suspect they will affect the south coast. The west coast of England

:18:46. > :18:51.Wales is also likely to see a few showers. The rain in the north-east

:18:52. > :18:57.of Scotland will clear away into the afternoon. Not overly windy, and

:18:58. > :19:01.temperatures around about where they should be. Monday morning starts

:19:02. > :19:03.cold with fog and frost, which will give away to some
