:00:24. > :00:28.Good afternoon. Two people have died and tens of thousands of homes are

:00:29. > :00:30.still without power following the storms which battered Southern

:00:31. > :00:33.England overnight. An 85-year-old man was killed when a cruise ship in

:00:34. > :00:37.the English Channel was hit by a freak wave. And in Central London a

:00:38. > :00:40.woman died after part of a building collapsed onto her car. In

:00:41. > :00:41.Hampshire, 30 people had to be rescued by the army from a seafront

:00:42. > :00:53.restaurant. Angus Crawford reports. The morning after what should have

:00:54. > :00:59.been a romantic night out. Glass shattered, woodwork scarred, cars

:01:00. > :01:04.picked up, thrown against each other and scattered along the road. At

:01:05. > :01:08.Milford on Sea in Hampshire, around 30 people became trapped in a cafe.

:01:09. > :01:13.The emergency services and the military were called in to rescue

:01:14. > :01:16.couples who had been enjoying a Valentine's Day meal out. Rocks and

:01:17. > :01:21.stones from the beach were picked up by the gale and smashed against the

:01:22. > :01:28.building. To look at it, it was almost like the windows were

:01:29. > :01:33.bending. All of a sudden, the outside of the window started

:01:34. > :01:37.smashing. There were also deaths overnight. Here, masonry ripped from

:01:38. > :01:42.the top of the building in Central London, crashed onto a busy street

:01:43. > :01:47.below, destroying this minicab. The woman driver was killed and two

:01:48. > :01:51.passengers taken to hospital. Out in the English Channel, a freak wave

:01:52. > :01:58.hit this cruise ship. A man in his 80s died. The winds reached 80 miles

:01:59. > :02:04.an hour in places, knocking down trees and power cables, blocking

:02:05. > :02:10.roads and rail lines. A sinkhole, carved out by the water, opened up

:02:11. > :02:15.in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. It is 35 feet wide and 20 feet deep.

:02:16. > :02:20.Local roads of closed. Some residents have been told to leave

:02:21. > :02:26.their homes. At Lyme Regis in Dorset, the power of the waves

:02:27. > :02:32.watched with respect by local people. Magnificent, I suppose, and

:02:33. > :02:37.extremely dangerous. I won't be going anywhere near the club right

:02:38. > :02:40.now. The gods are punishing us for something, I do not know what. I

:02:41. > :02:46.hate to think what they are punishing us for. The threat is

:02:47. > :02:49.passing. Forecasters say condition should ease in the next few days.

:02:50. > :02:57.Our correspondent, Ben Moore, is in Milford on Sea in Hampshire. What

:02:58. > :03:02.are conditions like there today? We are still being buffeted by gale

:03:03. > :03:06.force winds at Milford on Sea. Just behind me here, you can see the

:03:07. > :03:09.debris from the storm last night. That is essentially what remains of

:03:10. > :03:15.the beach huts that line the front here, lifted up, smashed and

:03:16. > :03:18.annihilated on the promenade. You can see the marine cafe. Contractors

:03:19. > :03:23.and emergency workers are still there, assessing the damage, after

:03:24. > :03:27.the storm winds and rocks off the beach smashed into it overnight. We

:03:28. > :03:34.picked this up off the road just down. These the sorts of things that

:03:35. > :03:37.were flying around last night. It is really incredible that no one was

:03:38. > :03:41.more seriously injured. We are expecting the storms to abate. The

:03:42. > :03:47.winds are about 60 miles an hour now. At the moment, it is difficult

:03:48. > :03:49.to see with the weather as it is, how the clean-up operation will

:03:50. > :03:52.begin before tomorrow. And our correspondent, Sian Lloyd, is in

:03:53. > :04:00.Worcester. Is more flooding is expected there? Water levels are

:04:01. > :04:06.receding at the moment in Worcester, although we are expecting

:04:07. > :04:09.another peak tomorrow morning. Environment Agency officials are

:04:10. > :04:13.keeping a very close eye on the water levels in case the Worcester

:04:14. > :04:18.Bridge, the main route across the city, has to close again. It was

:04:19. > :04:23.shut for three days and reopened to traffic at 6pm yesterday. Elsewhere

:04:24. > :04:30.in the county of Worcestershire, the Army has been called in. People are

:04:31. > :04:35.being transported around Upton upon seven. In Gloucestershire, sandbags

:04:36. > :04:43.have been used to protect the 50. There remains a severe flood warning

:04:44. > :04:45.in place. In Worcester, we have been hearing of work taking place across

:04:46. > :04:50.the river with trees being chopped down. It will be a long time yet

:04:51. > :04:53.before they get anything like back to normal here. In the United

:04:54. > :04:57.States, at least 25 people have died in a huge winter storm that's swept

:04:58. > :05:00.up the east coast. Most of the deaths were in car accidents on

:05:01. > :05:03.roads covered in ice. Some parts of New York State saw more than two

:05:04. > :05:05.feet of snow. Hundreds of thousands of homes are still without power.

:05:06. > :05:13.The storm has now moved into Canada. The leader of the Roman Catholic

:05:14. > :05:15.Church in England and Wales, Archbishop Vincent Nichols, has

:05:16. > :05:19.criticised the Government's welfare reforms. He says poor families face

:05:20. > :05:23.hunger and destitution because of the changes to unemployment, housing

:05:24. > :05:26.and disability benefit. The Government said the measures would

:05:27. > :05:28.help some of the poorest families transform their lives. Our political

:05:29. > :05:42.correspondent, Tom Barton, reports. He leads the Roman Catholic Church

:05:43. > :05:46.in England and Wales. A week today, he will head to the Vatican to be

:05:47. > :05:51.made into a cardinal. Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of

:05:52. > :05:56.Westminster, has now waded into a debate much closer to home, over

:05:57. > :06:00.whether the Government 's welfare reforms are fair. The basic safety

:06:01. > :06:06.net which would guarantee that people would not be left in hunger

:06:07. > :06:13.and destitution has been to one apart. It no longer exists. That is

:06:14. > :06:18.a real dramatic crisis. The comments are aimed at reforms being carried

:06:19. > :06:22.out by the welfare secretary, Iain Duncan Smith. His flagship policy

:06:23. > :06:26.aims to merge fix working age benefits, including jobseeker's

:06:27. > :06:32.allowance, child tax credit and housing benefits, into a single

:06:33. > :06:33.payment called universal credit. In a statement, the Department for Work

:06:34. > :06:50.and Pensions said: last year, the Archbishop of

:06:51. > :06:55.Canterbury, Justin Welby, also caused a row with ministers with a

:06:56. > :06:59.similar attack on welfare reforms. This is clearly an issue some

:07:00. > :07:07.religious figures feel is as much about ethics as it is about

:07:08. > :07:10.politics. The latest round of peace talks between the Syrian government

:07:11. > :07:16.and opposition groups in Geneva have ended abruptly after only a few

:07:17. > :07:21.minutes. The UN mediator said no progress had been made and no date

:07:22. > :07:24.had been set for further talks. And opposition negotiator said

:07:25. > :07:28.differences remained over the issues of violence and political

:07:29. > :07:30.transition. Tributes are being paid to one of England's greatest

:07:31. > :07:34.footballers, Sir Tom Finney, who has died at the age of 91. He played for

:07:35. > :07:37.his country 76 times, scoring thirty goals and famously spent his entire

:07:38. > :07:41.career at one club, Preston North End.

:07:42. > :07:55.Olly Foster looks back at his life. Tom Finney was the epitome of skill

:07:56. > :07:58.and sportsmanship and yet he was never a full-time footballer. His

:07:59. > :08:03.father made him take an apprenticeship in plumbing, so he

:08:04. > :08:08.would have a trade to fall back on. He joined his hometown, Preston

:08:09. > :08:14.North End, as a 15-year-old in 1937 and never played for any other side.

:08:15. > :08:20.His international career began in 1946, just six weeks after serving

:08:21. > :08:24.with the Desert Rats in Africa. Two years later came a special match for

:08:25. > :08:29.the anywhere and, in front of his wartime commanding officer, he

:08:30. > :08:36.scored one of his 30 international goals against Scotland at Hamden

:08:37. > :08:42.Park. After football, his plumbing business thrived. But he also stayed

:08:43. > :08:46.close to Preston. He was their president and the club named a new

:08:47. > :08:54.stand after him at their Deepdale ground. To have it named after you

:08:55. > :08:58.is presumably quite a thrill. To have spent here -- to have spent all

:08:59. > :09:04.my career here and have a star named after you is an honour. Why to use

:09:05. > :09:10.only the third footballer in history to be knighted. -- he is only the

:09:11. > :09:16.third football. Tom Finney would have been great in any football

:09:17. > :09:20.team, in any match, in any age, even if he had been wearing an overcoat.

:09:21. > :09:23.The footballer, Sir Tom Finney, who has died, at the age of 91. At the

:09:24. > :09:26.Winter Games in Sochi, Britain's Elise Christie has been penalised

:09:27. > :09:30.for a second time. The speed skater is out of the 1500 metre short track

:09:31. > :09:33.event because she was a centimetre wide of the official finish line in

:09:34. > :09:36.the qualifying heats. It comes two days after she was relegated from

:09:37. > :09:38.the silver medal to eighth place in the 500 metre event because she

:09:39. > :09:46.collided with two other skaters. You can see more on all of today's

:09:47. > :09:52.stories on the BBC News Channel. That's it for now we'll be back at

:09:53. > :09:53.6pm. Stay with us on BBC One. It's time for the news where you
