:00:08. > :00:11.Ukraine's Prime Minister says his country is on the brink of disaster

:00:12. > :00:14.and he accuses Russia of declaring war. Ukranian and Russian soldiers

:00:15. > :00:19.now face each other in the Crimea region, with the West condemning

:00:20. > :00:21.Moscow's decision to send troops in. The sovereignty and editorial

:00:22. > :00:28.integrity of Ukraine has been violated and this cannot be the way

:00:29. > :00:31.to conduct international affairs. China vows to track down those

:00:32. > :00:34.responsible for an attack at a railway station, which left 29

:00:35. > :00:40.people dead and more than 100 wounded.

:00:41. > :00:41.And Man City secure the first silverware of the season after

:00:42. > :01:06.beating Sunderland at Wembley. Good evening. Ukraine's Prime

:01:07. > :01:09.Minister has accused Russia of declaring war and says Moscow's

:01:10. > :01:15.decision to deploy troops across the border means his country is on the

:01:16. > :01:18.brink of disaster. Russian and Ukrainian soldiers now face each

:01:19. > :01:21.other at a number of army bases in the Crimea region, after the Russian

:01:22. > :01:26.Parliament's decision to send in the military. In response, Ukraine has

:01:27. > :01:30.placed its armed forces on full combat readiness and called up

:01:31. > :01:41.reservists. From Sevastapol, here's Daniel Sandford.

:01:42. > :01:46.Russian troops patrolling directly outside one of Ukraine's vital

:01:47. > :01:51.military bases in Crimea. While the new Ukrainian government called for

:01:52. > :01:55.a full military mobilisation, Russian soldiers already controlled

:01:56. > :02:02.most of Crimea without a shot having been fired. And some in the village

:02:03. > :02:06.nearby came out to welcome them. TRANSLATION: Our heroes. We are our

:02:07. > :02:13.lives to them and I'm ready to do anything for them. -- they are our

:02:14. > :02:17.heroes. Behind the walls, vital military equipment which the

:02:18. > :02:22.Ukrainian stare not use for fear of provoking a stronger reaction from

:02:23. > :02:26.Moscow. These Ukrainian soldiers are now effectively trapped in their own

:02:27. > :02:30.base on their own territory. A short while ago, their colonel came out to

:02:31. > :02:37.ask the Russians to pull back a bit, but so far they have not moved. As

:02:38. > :02:40.his troops in Crimea stood helplessly in their virtual

:02:41. > :02:45.prisons, the Ukrainian Prime Minister in Kiev warned his country

:02:46. > :02:53.was on the brink of disaster. It is not the threat. This is actually the

:02:54. > :03:02.declaration of war to my country. And we urge President Putin to pull

:03:03. > :03:06.back his military. In the far north of Crimea, where it joins the rest

:03:07. > :03:13.of Ukraine, soldiers could be seen in the distance digging defensive

:03:14. > :03:17.positions. Even the headquarters of Ukraine's Navy in Sebastopol was

:03:18. > :03:21.under siege. This time from pro-Russian activists. We saw how

:03:22. > :03:26.sailors were turned away from work as machine gunners watched

:03:27. > :03:30.helplessly from the rooftops. The man in charge of Ukraine's armed

:03:31. > :03:35.forces until two days ago called on politicians to solve the crisis. I

:03:36. > :03:44.am very sorry that Ukrainian soldiers and sailors are hostages of

:03:45. > :03:48.this situation now. It is very sad. Then some Russian troops turned up

:03:49. > :03:51.and vandalised the electricity substation right outside the

:03:52. > :03:55.Ukrainian headquarters. This evening, as more Russian ships

:03:56. > :04:04.sailed into the harbour, the head of the Ukrainian Navy switched sides.

:04:05. > :04:07.The crisis in Ukraine is one of the most serious confrontations between

:04:08. > :04:11.Russia and the West in recent years - a clash of old Cold War rivalries.

:04:12. > :04:14.Today, the US Secretary of State John Kerry warned that Russia could

:04:15. > :04:18.be expelled from the G8, while the head of NATO says Moscow's actions

:04:19. > :04:28.are threatening peace in Europe. Here's our diplomatic correspondent

:04:29. > :04:31.Bridget Kendall. This isn't just about Crimea any

:04:32. > :04:43.more. It is about Ukraine as a whole. The pro-Russian crowd cheers

:04:44. > :04:49.here as Ukrainian government supporters are literally thrown out

:04:50. > :04:53.of the building. One of several rallies in mainly Russian speaking

:04:54. > :04:59.cities in eastern Ukraine, where Ukraine's flag was replaced by the

:05:00. > :05:05.Russian flag on City Hall. One activist from Moscow even filmed

:05:06. > :05:09.himself doing it. And, as with Crimea, the government in Kiev is

:05:10. > :05:14.trapped. If it doesn't respond, these eastern cities might slip out

:05:15. > :05:22.of its control. But any move that provokes a confrontation could give

:05:23. > :05:27.Russia an excuse to invade. Just across-the-board, Russian forces are

:05:28. > :05:31.poised and ready for action. -- across the border. Essentially, it

:05:32. > :05:34.is a massive training exercise but Russia has turned military

:05:35. > :05:43.manoeuvres into an invasion before when it sent troops into Georgia in

:05:44. > :05:48.2008. There is a sense of crisis in Russia, too, today. President Putin

:05:49. > :05:53.now has the right to send troops into Ukraine, says the newsreader, a

:05:54. > :05:57.senior Kremlin editor. He adds that the Russian president warned

:05:58. > :06:01.President Obama that if there is any threat to Russian interests, he

:06:02. > :06:05.wouldn't hesitate to go in. In Washington, it has been called a

:06:06. > :06:10.brazen act of aggression. It feels suddenly as though the world is on

:06:11. > :06:15.the brink of an East -West confrontation reminiscent of the

:06:16. > :06:19.Cold War. Russia needs to think very carefully about the choice it is

:06:20. > :06:25.making, and there are these macro bands, asset freezes, isolation with

:06:26. > :06:28.respect to trade, American businesses may also well want to

:06:29. > :06:33.start thinking twice about whether they want to do business with a

:06:34. > :06:38.country that behaves like this. We have to recognise the sovereign tree

:06:39. > :06:43.and integrity of the Ukraine and it has been violated and this cannot be

:06:44. > :06:47.the way to conduct international affairs. -- sovereignty. In Kiev,

:06:48. > :06:53.crowds are again filling Independence Square, no longer

:06:54. > :06:56.celebrating victory but appealing for outside support. But if

:06:57. > :07:01.President Putin is determined to act, it is hard to see how the West

:07:02. > :07:05.can stop him. The dangers of this conflict continue to grow.

:07:06. > :07:12.And Daniel Sandford is in Sevastopol in Crimea. As this crisis deepens,

:07:13. > :07:18.is it fair to say Ukraine has already lost Crimea? Yes, whereas

:07:19. > :07:24.stand here it does look as if Crimea is lost. -- where I stand. Ukraine

:07:25. > :07:27.has lost control of its air bases here and its military bases, and as

:07:28. > :07:34.a pro-Russian government in power, so the only way the Ukraine could

:07:35. > :07:37.get Crimea back would be through negotiation with President Putin and

:07:38. > :07:41.it looks as though the price would be a referendum on whether Crimea

:07:42. > :07:44.should break away from Ukraine, and then there is the problem of eastern

:07:45. > :07:47.Ukraine, because although it is possible there could be political

:07:48. > :07:54.discussions and a good solution could be found to avoid bloodshed,

:07:55. > :07:58.if the Crimea scenario continues to play itself out in eastern Ukraine,

:07:59. > :08:02.this could open up a long board of confrontation between East and West

:08:03. > :08:08.Ukraine, and then the chances of a real shooting war will become quite

:08:09. > :08:11.high. Thank you. The Chinese authorities have blamed

:08:12. > :08:14.separatists for a mass stabbing at a railway station in which at least 29

:08:15. > :08:18.people died and 130 others were wounded. A group of around ten

:08:19. > :08:22.attackers rushed at passengers in the south- western city of Kunming

:08:23. > :08:28.yesterday. From there, here's Damian Grammaticas.

:08:29. > :08:32.Armed police on guard today, ringing Kunming's train station. Incredibly,

:08:33. > :08:38.travellers were already flooding back in, less than 24 hours after

:08:39. > :08:44.the murderous rampage here. Ten or more attackers, clad in black and

:08:45. > :08:47.masked, ran amok. The attackers drew their knives. They began slashing at

:08:48. > :08:51.people and then chased them. The crowd scattered everywhere. In the

:08:52. > :09:03.space of just 12 minutes, around 150 people were killed and injured here.

:09:04. > :09:10.I saw one man and one woman clearly. A policeman walked up to

:09:11. > :09:16.them. He had no weapon. He shouted, put your nice town. Who are you?

:09:17. > :09:21.They set up on him. They ran out from there. They had nice 50, 60

:09:22. > :09:26.centimetres long. People were shouting, we had never harmed you.

:09:27. > :09:32.Why are you killing us? They didn't care, they killed everyone. -- they

:09:33. > :09:35.had knives. Adults and children. Chinese authorities say this was

:09:36. > :09:38.done by terrorist elements from Xinjiang, in China's far west. One

:09:39. > :09:44.student says one of the attackers ran towards her, stabbing wildly.

:09:45. > :09:48.She was in the ticket queue when it happened. Xinjiang lies thousands of

:09:49. > :09:51.miles away on China's border with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Many of

:09:52. > :09:55.its Muslim Uighurs resent what they see as heavy-handed Chinese control.

:09:56. > :10:00.Violence here has been getting worse. Dozens died last year. And

:10:01. > :10:03.now it may be seeping into other parts of China. Last October, China

:10:04. > :10:08.said this incident in Beijing's Tiananmen Square was an Uighur

:10:09. > :10:12.terror attack. A car ploughed into a crowd, then burst into flames. Two

:10:13. > :10:16.tourists and three people in the vehicle died. But this latest

:10:17. > :10:19.rampage was far more bloody, and what will worry China's authorities

:10:20. > :10:31.is that, despite the vast funds they are now spending on internal

:10:32. > :10:33.security, the violence is spreading. The former Northern Ireland

:10:34. > :10:36.Secretary Peter Hain says pursuing British soldiers involved in the

:10:37. > :10:40.Bloody Sunday killings is a "waste" of police time. 14 civilians died in

:10:41. > :10:50.Londonderry in 1972 after soldiers opened fire during a civil rights

:10:51. > :10:52.march. Mr Hain's comments follow the disclosure that a number of

:10:53. > :10:55.Republican terror suspects have been sent letters which in effect give

:10:56. > :11:01.them immunity from prosecution, as part of the Northern Ireland peace

:11:02. > :11:04.process. In just a few hours' time, Hollywood

:11:05. > :11:09.will begin hosting its biggest party of the year for the Oscars. American

:11:10. > :11:11.Hustle and the British film Gravity lead this year's nominations, as our

:11:12. > :11:20.entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba reports from Los Angeles.

:11:21. > :11:28.For months, it's been a relentless run of red carpets, all building up

:11:29. > :11:34.to the biggest event of the more. Leading the battalion of Brits

:11:35. > :11:40.hoping to storm the stage this year is Steve McQueen. I'm really

:11:41. > :11:45.nervous, but it will be a celebration. It is one occasion

:11:46. > :11:54.where you have to force yourself to enjoy it. Its main competition comes

:11:55. > :12:01.from two films. American Hustle and Gravity. The latter was made in

:12:02. > :12:14.Britain. Whoever ends up winning or losing this will still be seen as a

:12:15. > :12:20.very strong year for British film. Some nominees like Cate Blanchett,

:12:21. > :12:28.up for best actress, are considered almost certain to win. I'm just

:12:29. > :12:35.excited. It is a lovely position to be in, which ever way the penny

:12:36. > :12:43.falls. Others, like the team behind Philomena, may have a Mormon -- a

:12:44. > :12:50.more nerve wracking evening. But here is some advice: don't do great

:12:51. > :12:55.long lists of bank queues. Thank them later, write them a nice note

:12:56. > :13:02.afterwards and say thank you. In a way, that is more appreciated. Try

:13:03. > :13:09.to be sex linked and don't cry. -- succinct. For many, winning an Oscar

:13:10. > :13:17.will be the highlight of their career. Holding back the tears may

:13:18. > :13:26.be one piece of advice they will not be able to follow.

:13:27. > :13:29.Now, let's get the sport. The first major piece of silverware

:13:30. > :13:35.of the football season has been won by Manchester City after beating

:13:36. > :13:40.Sunderland 3-1 at Wembley. It is the first for the manager who joined the

:13:41. > :13:45.club in June. Natalie, a disappointing day for

:13:46. > :13:49.Sunderland. Was it just too big a task for them against this

:13:50. > :13:56.Manchester City side? History will recall this is a 3-1 win for

:13:57. > :13:59.Manchester City but that score does not do credit to how well Sunderland

:14:00. > :14:02.played. For a while it looked like they

:14:03. > :14:07.might have their day, but ultimately to moments of sheer brilliance from

:14:08. > :14:16.two expensive individuals proved to be all the difference. It's been a

:14:17. > :14:18.long time since Wembley heard the Black Cats sing, but they were far

:14:19. > :14:27.from here just to make up the numbers. City fans were already

:14:28. > :14:36.previewing celebrations as orderly overwhelming favourites can. After

:14:37. > :14:40.nine minutes, city were stunned into silence. Sunderland were going to

:14:41. > :14:48.savour this moment. They were well-organised and

:14:49. > :14:57.defiant, and what almost in again, but this time unsuccessfully. But if

:14:58. > :15:04.ever they needed a reminder of the quality Manchester City possess,

:15:05. > :15:10.this goal showed them. And while Sunderland's defence was still

:15:11. > :15:13.reeling, they were floored again. Sunderland did not stop fighting,

:15:14. > :15:19.but right at the end, all hopes were crushed. Manuel Pellegrini was

:15:20. > :15:29.tasked with winning five trophies when he took over last summer. Just

:15:30. > :15:36.for Mac to go, then. -- just four. So Sunderland's 41 year wait for a

:15:37. > :15:39.trophy continues. They are battling relegation in a league. On this

:15:40. > :15:45.showing though, fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

:15:46. > :15:57.In the Premier League Tottenham have a lead in their game. Aston Bill are

:15:58. > :16:03.happy at four goals past Norwich. Just a couple of seconds left in all

:16:04. > :16:08.three games. England's cricketers are playing in Antigua. They won the

:16:09. > :16:13.toss and chose to bowl. The West Indies gave a relatively

:16:14. > :16:19.poor batting performance. Stephen Parry took three wickets on his

:16:20. > :16:26.Dubuque. England need 160 to win but have lost two wickets already and

:16:27. > :16:30.are 55 42. Rumour Conroy has a two shot lead as

:16:31. > :16:35.he prepares to tee off in half an hour's time in the final round in

:16:36. > :16:40.Florida. He shot a third round of 69 to lead the field going to the final

:16:41. > :16:49.day. If he wins in Florida it will be his first PGA Tour title since

:16:50. > :16:52.2012. Ronnie O'Sullivan is playing in the final.

:16:53. > :17:03.He is seven frames to one ahead with the evening session still to come.

:17:04. > :17:04.There is more throughout the evening on
