:00:08. > :00:16.An airliner vanishes over the South China Sea. 239 people are feared

:00:17. > :00:20.dead. Malaysia Airlines 777 disappeared suddenly without sending

:00:21. > :00:24.a distress signal. Worried relatives wait for news and officials say that

:00:25. > :00:29.two passengers were travelling under false identities. Investigators say

:00:30. > :00:32.they are considering all possibilities as to the columns.

:00:33. > :00:36.Also tonight, dozens of international observers are blocked

:00:37. > :00:44.from entering Crimea in a tense stand-off with pro-Russian forces.

:00:45. > :00:48.Did he win it?! A surprise gold for Britain tonight in the 60 metre

:00:49. > :01:06.final of the World Indoor Championships.

:01:07. > :01:14.Good evening. 239 passengers and crew are feared dead after a plane

:01:15. > :01:19.vanished over the South China Sea rotting in an extensive air and sea

:01:20. > :01:22.search. The plane disappeared without sending a distress signal.

:01:23. > :01:27.It has emerged that two passengers on board the plane were using false

:01:28. > :01:31.identities. Investigators say they are looking at all possibilities.

:01:32. > :01:35.The Malaysia Airlines jet was travelling between Kuala Lumpur and

:01:36. > :01:39.Beijing when it disappeared two hours into the journey. It was

:01:40. > :01:43.flying south of the man at the time. Jonathan head's report from Kuala

:01:44. > :01:48.Lumpur contains some flash photography.

:01:49. > :01:55.Our after our they trickled in. Family members of those on board

:01:56. > :01:58.flight Mohammad Javad MH370. Hoping to hear something about the fate of

:01:59. > :02:03.the aircraft. But there was nothing anyone could tell them. From the

:02:04. > :02:05.Nam, the closest country to where the last contact was made,

:02:06. > :02:09.helicopters and planes have been scanning the South China Sea. At one

:02:10. > :02:15.point, they thought they'd spotted an oil slick. But couldn't be sure.

:02:16. > :02:21.This was the aircraft that's gone missing. A Boeing 777, a workhorse

:02:22. > :02:26.of the airline industry with an impeccable safety record. The fact

:02:27. > :02:29.that such a safe lane operated via a reputable airline could simply

:02:30. > :02:35.disappear has baffled aviation experts. With no clues left by the

:02:36. > :02:38.pilots and no wreckage found, in the vast expanse of see where the plane

:02:39. > :02:44.disappeared, it is a mystery that could take a very long time to

:02:45. > :02:47.solve. More than 24 hours after it vanished, it must be assumed that

:02:48. > :02:52.something catastrophic happened to flight 370. News that two of the

:02:53. > :02:57.passengers may have been travelling on stolen European passports could

:02:58. > :03:04.offer a clue, but what kind is still just guesswork. Malaysia's Prime

:03:05. > :03:11.Minister arrived at the airports to offer his support to the families

:03:12. > :03:15.and to ask for help. TRANSLATION: The U.S. Navy has agreed to deploy

:03:16. > :03:19.the aircraft to help us with our search and rescue mission. We have

:03:20. > :03:23.been combing the area around the last reported court notes of the

:03:24. > :03:28.plane. Neighbouring Singapore is also providing a plane. But they

:03:29. > :03:34.have a lot of sea to cover. And little information to guide them.

:03:35. > :03:39.Jonathan head, BBC News, Kuala Lumpur.

:03:40. > :03:42.So how could an airliner suddenly disappeared from radar screens with

:03:43. > :03:48.no apparent warning? This report from Simon Clementson.

:03:49. > :03:51.All Asia airlines -- the Malaysia Airlines plane is not the first to

:03:52. > :03:56.disappear without trace even if it is highly unusual. In 2009, and Air

:03:57. > :03:59.France Airbus jet also vanished from radar screens. Wreckage from the

:04:00. > :04:05.aircraft was eventually found in the Atlantic. But the causes of the

:04:06. > :04:09.crash remains a mystery until voice and data recorders were retrieved

:04:10. > :04:14.years later. The final report said that human error was partly to

:04:15. > :04:21.blame. Today's aeroplanes are incredibly reliable and you do not

:04:22. > :04:26.get some sudden structural failure in flight. It just does not happen.

:04:27. > :04:32.It will not happen. Boeing describes its 777 model as a superstar. First

:04:33. > :04:37.flown in 1995, more than 1000 have no rolled off the production line.

:04:38. > :04:41.It can travel for 16 hours nonstop and experts point to its impressive

:04:42. > :04:47.safety record. With one fatal crash in more than 5 million flights.

:04:48. > :04:50.Three people were killed when a sea wall was struck in San Francisco

:04:51. > :04:55.although the investigation has so far found no mechanical failure. The

:04:56. > :04:59.only other incident of note came when a jet landed short of a runway

:05:00. > :05:04.at Heathrow, but none of the passengers were seriously injured.

:05:05. > :05:08.It could take investigators months, if not years to determine exactly

:05:09. > :05:11.what happened to the Malaysia Airlines flight. Aviation experts

:05:12. > :05:19.believe whatever happened was quick and let the pilots no time to place

:05:20. > :05:22.a distress call. International observers have been

:05:23. > :05:26.turned away from Crimea for the third day running. Warning shots

:05:27. > :05:30.were fired as they approached a checkpoint guarded by pro-Russian

:05:31. > :05:34.forces. They said they had no authorisation to enter. The interim

:05:35. > :05:40.government in TF has insisted the team must be allowed in. Christian

:05:41. > :05:46.Fraser sent this report from Sebastopol. Three times they have

:05:47. > :05:50.tried to cross into Crimea and three times his international observers

:05:51. > :05:53.have been turned back. As they approach the barriers, they were

:05:54. > :05:57.told there were warning shots fired into the air. None of the 50

:05:58. > :06:00.observers were hurt but it serves as another example of Russia's

:06:01. > :06:06.impatience with any outside interference. And that goes for the

:06:07. > :06:09.foreign media, too. Last night, as we sat and watched an assault on a

:06:10. > :06:19.Ukrainian missile base, there were journalists who were attacked.

:06:20. > :06:29.One of them was this man, who writes for a website in Moscow. I said,

:06:30. > :06:36.stop hitting me, I am Russian. He said, I am Russian too.

:06:37. > :06:41.The flags at the checkpoint suggest Crimea is already Russia. And it is

:06:42. > :06:44.starting to feel that way. A vast number of troops were moving in

:06:45. > :06:51.convoy today, in trucks without plates towards the town were heavily

:06:52. > :06:55.armed gunmen had overrun this army recruitment centre. We had just

:06:56. > :06:58.driven up to the gates of this recruitment centre and we have seen

:06:59. > :07:03.again Russian trucks. We have seen a regular soldiers armed with assault

:07:04. > :07:08.rifles and as we tried to park up, a man in plainclothes came towards us

:07:09. > :07:14.within a pistol. We decided to come away. A team of Ukrainian activists

:07:15. > :07:23.who went to the same site were caught out. They shot at the tyres.

:07:24. > :07:27.It seems incongruous that amid the menace that we witness today, people

:07:28. > :07:33.of Sebastopol were out buying flowers. Celebrating International

:07:34. > :07:36.Women's Day. This is the picture that Russia wants you to see. The

:07:37. > :07:42.rest of it, they are willing to share. -- they are unwilling.

:07:43. > :07:47.The chief secretary to the secretary, Danny Alexander,

:07:48. > :07:51.separating the personal tax allowance to ?12,500 would be a key

:07:52. > :07:55.demand of the Liberal Democrats in any coalition negotiations after the

:07:56. > :07:59.next election. He was speaking at the Lib Dem spring conference from

:08:00. > :08:05.where our Political Correspondent, Vicky Jung, reports.

:08:06. > :08:08.Shame on you! Demonstrating against government cuts, the unions say that

:08:09. > :08:12.people are worse off because of changes to benefits. But the Lib

:08:13. > :08:16.Dems insist they are putting money back in the pockets of workers. From

:08:17. > :08:21.next month, most will be able to earn ?10,000 before paying any

:08:22. > :08:27.income tax. The party is desperate to earn the credit. This tax break

:08:28. > :08:30.was fought for by the little Democrat but resisted by the

:08:31. > :08:32.Conservatives. People know it is being delivered by the Liberal

:08:33. > :08:36.Democrats. With a budget approaching, there could be more

:08:37. > :08:42.treats to hand out. A further rise in the personal allowances on the

:08:43. > :08:45.cards. To staff that this chocolate shop think it will make a

:08:46. > :08:49.difference? With the increase in the cost of living, I do not think it

:08:50. > :08:53.will make that much of a difference. In terms of everything else that is

:08:54. > :08:57.going on, especially energy prices, they do not know if the consumer

:08:58. > :09:03.will feel a direct impact. Fantastic. As I said, a little bit

:09:04. > :09:06.extra for me, even if it is pounds, it will add up and it will be

:09:07. > :09:10.great. Looking to the future, the Lib Dem Leader has more ambitious

:09:11. > :09:18.plans. Nick Clegg says that lifting the income tax threshold to ?12,500

:09:19. > :09:20.will be a top priority if there are coalition talks after the next

:09:21. > :09:24.election. With money so tight, there has been very little in the way of

:09:25. > :09:27.giveaways to voters. There is no surprise that there has been a huge

:09:28. > :09:30.battle within the coalition for ownership of this tax-cutting

:09:31. > :09:33.policy. Both the Lib Dems and the Tories want voters to thank them for

:09:34. > :09:39.the few extra pounds in their pockets.

:09:40. > :09:42.A man and a woman from Blackpool have appeared in court charged in

:09:43. > :09:46.connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl. Harry Jones and

:09:47. > :09:50.Michelle King, were remanded in custody, accused of causing or

:09:51. > :09:54.allowing the death of Sophie Jones, who died on Tuesday. Toxicology

:09:55. > :10:00.tests confirm that the toddler had swallowed methadone.

:10:01. > :10:05.The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, has told the BBC that if his party wins

:10:06. > :10:08.the next election, he will bring in a new law making it illegal to abuse

:10:09. > :10:11.or discriminate against members of the Armed Forces full stop Mr

:10:12. > :10:18.Miliband has been visiting troops in Afghanistan. Ian Watson was with him

:10:19. > :10:23.and has sent this report. The Afghan National Army and

:10:24. > :10:26.training. By the end of the year, they will have taken over,

:10:27. > :10:32.operations from British forces. But his last visit -- at his last visit,

:10:33. > :10:36.the Prime Minister said the troops had published his vision of bringing

:10:37. > :10:38.basic security to the country. Today, Ed Miliband deliberately

:10:39. > :10:43.emphasised the challenges that lie ahead. The military part of our

:10:44. > :10:49.operation year is coming to an end. But the job is not yet done. There

:10:50. > :10:54.are still -- there is still further to go. In practice, his policy is

:10:55. > :10:59.allied closely to the coalition's. More training to security forces,

:11:00. > :11:02.more money for economic and social development. But he also came here

:11:03. > :11:07.to announce what he thought would be a tonic to the troops. Ed Miliband

:11:08. > :11:12.is giving the troops a taste of what a Labour government would do on

:11:13. > :11:15.their behalf. He says he would imposed strict penalties on anyone

:11:16. > :11:22.who abuses members of the Armed Forces. This will make up any part

:11:23. > :11:26.of Labour's first Queens speech. But why should this be a priority? This

:11:27. > :11:30.is part of fulfilling the military covenant. A greater priority than

:11:31. > :11:34.policies on education? I'm sure we will have policies on education as

:11:35. > :11:39.well. Ed Miliband says that security has

:11:40. > :11:42.improved in Afghanistan but senior military sources have expressed

:11:43. > :11:49.fears for the future funding of the Afghan army, once British boots are

:11:50. > :11:53.no longer on the ground. Senior ministers have confirmed that

:11:54. > :11:56.they are discussing plans to make nonpayment of the television licence

:11:57. > :12:03.fee a civil offence rather than a criminal one. More than 180,000

:12:04. > :12:08.people appeared before the courts in 2012 accused of not having a licence

:12:09. > :12:15.which currently costs ?145.50 a year. Many of those were fined.

:12:16. > :12:18.Around 70 were sent to prison. With all the sport, here's Lizzie

:12:19. > :12:22.Greenwood Hughes at the BBC Sport Centre.

:12:23. > :12:27.Good evening. Great Britain has a new sprinting star. After Richard

:12:28. > :12:33.Kilty was the shock winner of the six metres final at the world indoor

:12:34. > :12:35.athletics Championships in Roland. Chances are, you will not have heard

:12:36. > :12:41.of this man. Britain's Richard Kilty. The 24-year-old was not even

:12:42. > :12:43.meant to be yet the world indoor athletics Championships but called

:12:44. > :12:53.as Elektra placement. He shocked the world. Kilty gets a flying start. He

:12:54. > :12:59.might just about get it! Goal for Great Britain! Gold for Kilty. Now

:13:00. > :13:03.that is a shock. It is amazing. I could not a dream date. I was new

:13:04. > :13:07.one I was a kid I have something special. To become the World

:13:08. > :13:13.Champion, it is crazy. Will Britain win a bronze medal, to? Tiffany

:13:14. > :13:17.Porter takes the third spot in the women's six meter hurdles. But this

:13:18. > :13:23.tape belonged to a man from Stockton on Tees. The Teeside tornado, they

:13:24. > :13:26.call him. Jade Etherington has one great

:13:27. > :13:32.Britain's first Winter Paralympic medal on snow for 20 years. The

:13:33. > :13:35.visually impaired skier took silver in the downhill along with her

:13:36. > :13:40.guide, Caroline Powell. The pair communicate via headset. Arsenal

:13:41. > :13:44.will be on tomorrow's FA Cup semifinal draw after beating Everton

:13:45. > :13:50.4-1 today. Olivier Giroud scored twice at the Emirates after coming

:13:51. > :13:52.on Isy Suttie Jude. The remaining 3/4-final matches take place

:13:53. > :13:55.tomorrow. Batch of the day follows this

:13:56. > :13:58.programme so if you do not want to know today's Premier League scores,

:13:59. > :14:00.you know what to do. Chelsea's lead at the top of the

:14:01. > :14:04.table is now seven points Chelsea's lead at the top of the

:14:05. > :14:08.table is now following a 4-0 win over Tottenham. Elsewhere, wins for

:14:09. > :14:11.Manchester United, Cardiff and Southampton.

:14:12. > :14:17.And it is the penultimate weekend of rugby union's Six Nations. Our great

:14:18. > :14:21.for Scotland, beating 19-17 by France, and an emotional farewell in

:14:22. > :14:26.Dublin for the world's most capped player as Ireland overcame Italy

:14:27. > :14:30.46-7. Brian O'Driscoll, of his own. His

:14:31. > :14:35.record-breaking test cap will be the last he will in Ireland. Six minutes

:14:36. > :14:40.in, his pass put Jonny Sexton in to score his side's first try against

:14:41. > :14:44.Italy. The Italians scored a try of their own before the old master

:14:45. > :14:47.again played assistant, putting in Andrew Trimble to restore Ireland's

:14:48. > :14:52.control. Cian Healy bundled over another before the man they called

:14:53. > :14:55.bod inspired his side one more time with one more pass. His part in

:14:56. > :15:02.Jonny Sexton's try was his last act in an Ireland shirt on all Irish

:15:03. > :15:07.soil. The man of the moment fittingly finished as man of the

:15:08. > :15:10.match. Ireland play France next and they will have watched with some

:15:11. > :15:14.interest what happened to the French when Scotland's Stuart Hall gained a

:15:15. > :15:18.kick at them. Somehow no one grounded it until Hogg himself did.

:15:19. > :15:22.The Scots were one point ahead with two minutes remaining and then they

:15:23. > :15:29.allowed John Mark Dusan a penalty to win it. Cool from him and cruel on

:15:30. > :15:31.Scotland. And that is it from all of us here.

:15:32. > :15:52.A very good night. Bye-bye. High pressure is still on course to

:15:53. > :15:56.keep the bulk of the UK dry next week but we are not there yet. As

:15:57. > :16:03.the night goes on, gusty winds in Scotland will ease. A bitter drizzly

:16:04. > :16:06.across the western side of Wales. The bulk of England and Wales will

:16:07. > :16:10.stay clear and breezy. The breeze will stop the temperatures going

:16:11. > :16:13.down too far and a few spots kitting close to freezing. Frost free for

:16:14. > :16:17.most of us. Into tomorrow and you will notice a the contrast between

:16:18. > :16:20.the cloudy, damp weather across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Rain

:16:21. > :16:23.in Northern Ireland more persistent as the afternoon goes on. Sunny

:16:24. > :16:30.skies in England and Wales, largely. In the far north west of Wales, some

:16:31. > :16:37.drizzle. A contrast in temperatures. Cloudy and damp with warm sunshine.

:16:38. > :16:42.A bit more sunshine today. Some places may get to 18. It will mock

:16:43. > :16:48.look or feel much like Marge is -- it will not look or feel much like

:16:49. > :16:52.March. Sunday evening, we will see rain across Scotland with hill snow

:16:53. > :16:56.for time. The front bringing that will move south on Monday morning.

:16:57. > :17:00.Not much rain left. More cloud, cooler in south-east England. The

:17:01. > :17:06.full effects of the high from Tuesday onwards. By day, pleasantly

:17:07. > :17:08.warm sunshine. At night, it will be cold and frosty. Gardeners,
