:00:21. > :00:25.Good afternoon. The Malaysian Airlines passenger plane that's been
:00:26. > :00:28.missing for more than a week had its communications deliberately switched
:00:29. > :00:36.off, and then turned away from its planned course. The announcement was
:00:37. > :00:39.made by the country's Prime Minister, who said the plane could
:00:40. > :00:42.have travelled as far as Kazakhstan to the north, or the southern Indian
:00:43. > :00:46.Ocean. Police have begun searching the home of the pilot. Our
:00:47. > :00:55.correspondent, Jonah Fisher, reports from Kuala Lumpur. After a week with
:00:56. > :00:59.little sign of progress, the Malaysians said they have now
:01:00. > :01:03.reached some definitive conclusions. The Prime Minister says he is now
:01:04. > :01:09.convinced that flight MH370 did not crash into the South China Sea, and
:01:10. > :01:15.was instead diverted west into the Indian Ocean. Not by some mechanical
:01:16. > :01:25.error but by human hand. Up until the point at which it left
:01:26. > :01:32.militarily radar coverage, these movements are consistent with
:01:33. > :01:40.deliberate action by someone on the plane. The plane took off from Kuala
:01:41. > :01:45.Lumpur found the Beijing with 239 people on board. At 12:21am last
:01:46. > :01:49.Saturday morning. We now know that shortly afterwards, two of the
:01:50. > :01:53.aircraft's communication systems were disabled in sequence, as it
:01:54. > :01:58.crossed the east coast of Malaysia. An hour into the flight, the plane
:01:59. > :02:02.had gone silent. But its maintenance system continued trying to contact a
:02:03. > :02:12.satellite. Now the investigators say they are convinced it turned back
:02:13. > :02:14.and passed over Malaysia, then headed to the north-west. They've
:02:15. > :02:16.identified two new search areas. One leads south into the Indian Ocean,
:02:17. > :02:21.while the other, intriguingly, heads inland, making China and even
:02:22. > :02:25.Central Asia a possibility. Seven hours after the plane disappeared
:02:26. > :02:30.from radar, the last signal was received. Its location is still
:02:31. > :02:34.unclear. In the light of this new information, the huge search
:02:35. > :02:38.operation in the South China Sea has been halted and efforts shifted west
:02:39. > :02:41.into the Indian Ocean. Countries across South Asia are being
:02:42. > :02:46.contacted and asked to look at their radar data to see if the plane might
:02:47. > :02:50.have passed overhead. There were more than 150 Chinese passengers on
:02:51. > :02:54.board this flight and for them and the other relatives, it has been a
:02:55. > :02:59.week of mounting frustration at what many see as the slow pace of the
:03:00. > :03:02.Malaysian investigation. Today's announcement only deepens the
:03:03. > :03:09.mystery as to where their loved ones are now. Jonah Fisher, BBC News,
:03:10. > :03:15.Kuala Lumpur. And Jonah Fisher joins us now from Kuala Lumpur. The
:03:16. > :03:17.authorities are avoiding saying the word hijack, but they are sure that
:03:18. > :03:23.someone did this deliberately and they knew what they were doing.
:03:24. > :03:27.That's right. They've avoided saying the word hijack, but it's pretty
:03:28. > :03:32.clear that they believe somebody took control of that plane, disabled
:03:33. > :03:36.the transponder and the location sensitive devices that have been
:03:37. > :03:41.transmitting where the plane was and then steered it, with some expertise
:03:42. > :03:44.they believe, west across the Malaysian peninsula and out towards
:03:45. > :03:48.the Indian Ocean. The crucial piece of data which they've been looking
:03:49. > :03:51.at, which has enabled them to get some sense of where the plane was
:03:52. > :03:55.seven hours later, is from a satellite in the Indian Ocean that
:03:56. > :03:59.continued communicating with some of the maintenance equipment on board
:04:00. > :04:07.the plane. Briefly, what more can you tell us about the search of the
:04:08. > :04:11.pilot's home? Inevitably, the focus has now returned on the people
:04:12. > :04:14.inside the plane because they firmly believe that one of them must have
:04:15. > :04:20.been involved in changing the course of the plane. So, yes, the pilot's
:04:21. > :04:24.home here in Kuala Lumpur has been visited by the police, looking for
:04:25. > :04:28.any sort of clue or pointer that he might somehow have been involved in
:04:29. > :04:34.the change of direction and the disappearance of this plane. There
:04:35. > :04:37.have been violent clashes in eastern Ukraine, the day before a referendum
:04:38. > :04:40.in Crimea on whether the region should remain part of Ukraine or
:04:41. > :04:43.join Russia. The UN Security Council is due to vote on a US-backed
:04:44. > :04:47.resolution, which describes the referendum as illegal. Our world

:05:20. > :05:24.meeting in London between the top US and Russian diplomats to try to
:05:25. > :05:28.defuse this crisis got nowhere. Now, from the new Ukrainian government,
:05:29. > :05:32.another offer to talk about greater Crimean autonomy. We are ready to
:05:33. > :05:41.discuss this in the dialogue. Sitting on the table, around the
:05:42. > :05:47.table. But not talking to... Which on the streets of the Crimean
:05:48. > :05:51.cities. In Crimea it self, preparations continue for Sunday's
:05:52. > :05:55.referendum. The West says it's a legitimate, Moscow says it will
:05:56. > :05:58.respect the result. Just how Russia response and how far the West will
:05:59. > :06:01.go in carrying out its threat to impose sanctions will dictate what

:06:13. > :06:16.Russia's actions, but no hint in a shift in the Kremlin's position. The
:06:17. > :06:21.UN Security Council is expected to vote later on US revolution, saying

:06:35. > :06:42.carrying out the attack. A family was also caught up in the attack as
