:00:20. > :00:26.show of force by the Kremlin. They come through as two different
:00:27. > :00:34.points as the so-called self-Defence Forces on the other side are
:00:35. > :00:38.amassing near the gate. The new satellite image of a large
:00:39. > :00:42.object in the southern Indian Ocean, could it be wreckage of the missing
:00:43. > :00:45.Malaysian plane? England's hopes of a winning start
:00:46. > :01:07.to the World Twenty20 are struck down by the weather.
:01:08. > :01:12.Hello. Good evening. Russian troops have stormed a military base in
:01:13. > :01:16.Crimea, seizing it from Ukrainian control. It's the most direct use of
:01:17. > :01:21.force by Russian troops since the start of the crisis in Ukraine and
:01:22. > :01:25.follows President Putin's formal declaration that Crimea is now part
:01:26. > :01:29.of Russia. Russian Special Forces smashed their way into the air base,
:01:30. > :01:33.using armoured vehicles and stun grenades, seizing it from Ukrainian
:01:34. > :01:38.servicemen, who were refusing to surrender. A second naval base was
:01:39. > :01:43.abandoned by Ukrainian forces after attacks by pro-Russian plishament
:01:44. > :01:52.the two -- militia. The two facilities were amongst the last
:01:53. > :01:57.under Ukrainian control. Limbering up for a fight, as the
:01:58. > :02:02.menacing force of the local militia arrives at the gate. They try to
:02:03. > :02:08.persuade the Ukrainian troops, holed up here, to leave. But the Ukrainian
:02:09. > :02:12.soldier says, they will stay till the end, to defend their commander's
:02:13. > :02:16.honour. The Colonel's a dejected man. He's
:02:17. > :02:22.been waiting for 23 days to be given orders to pull out his troops, but
:02:23. > :02:32.they never came. Can you really defend yourselves? "I hope so, " He
:02:33. > :02:36.said. He accuses the Russians of behaving like fascists.
:02:37. > :02:45.The militias have used persuasion, threats and violence in the past.
:02:46. > :02:50.Today, they promised to be peaceful. No firing, no arms, no, no, no. We
:02:51. > :02:59.are for peace. Only peace. Only peace. It's our brothers. It wasn't
:03:00. > :03:07.peaceful at all. Heavily armoured Russian forces stormed the base.
:03:08. > :03:11.Reporters were forced to the ground, footage confiscated. These are
:03:12. > :03:16.pictures Moscow doesn't want you to see. As you can see, Russian forces
:03:17. > :03:20.with armoured vehicles have now broken into the compound. They've
:03:21. > :03:23.come through at two different points, as the so-called
:03:24. > :03:27.self-Defence Forces on the other side are massing near the gate. It's
:03:28. > :03:36.the first time we've seen Russian troops in action in this conflict. A
:03:37. > :03:42.message to Ukraine and the outside world - with a show of brute force.
:03:43. > :03:47.Remarkably, there was only one minor injury. Out-manned and out-gunned
:03:48. > :03:55.the Ukrainian troops had no response but to surrender. They've been
:03:56. > :04:01.taunted, isolated and finally humiliated. As Russia took control
:04:02. > :04:09.of the base, they sang their National Anthem. Fatefully titled,
:04:10. > :04:15."Ukraine isn't dead yet." In Crimea it seems that way.
:04:16. > :04:22.Ian joins us now. So, a message then from the Kremlin. How will this be
:04:23. > :04:26.interpreted? Yeah, I think it is a message, if anyone wondered what
:04:27. > :04:29.President Putin's response would be to sanctions and threats from the
:04:30. > :04:34.European Union and from Washington, I think we had a pretty clear answer
:04:35. > :04:39.today that he and his forces are prepared to use force to get the
:04:40. > :04:44.Ukrainian troops out of Crimea. Now don't forget, from Moscow's
:04:45. > :04:47.perspective, this is now part of the Russian Federation. They regard the
:04:48. > :04:51.Ukrainian troops as occupying troops. They feel they've given them
:04:52. > :04:54.plenty of time to pull out. Kiev hasn't issued any orders to those
:04:55. > :04:59.troops and therefore, you've had this situation a stand-off. Slowly
:05:00. > :05:05.but surely they are consolidating control. Interestingly, across the
:05:06. > :05:08.border, in eastern Ukraine, there have been growing pro-Russian
:05:09. > :05:11.protests. Today the Foreign Office issued a warning against all but
:05:12. > :05:15.essential travel to three key cities in the east of the country. We know
:05:16. > :05:19.the Russian forces are on the other side of that border, Moscow said it
:05:20. > :05:23.had no plans to cross over, but of course, it reserves the right to do
:05:24. > :05:26.so, if it feels its citizens are under attack.
:05:27. > :05:30.Thank you. A new satellite image has been
:05:31. > :05:33.released showing debris in the southern Indian Ocean, which could
:05:34. > :05:35.be the remains of the Malaysian passenger plane, which has been
:05:36. > :05:39.missing for two weeks. The new picture, taken by Chinese satellite,
:05:40. > :05:46.appears to show a large floating object in the sea around 75 miles
:05:47. > :05:51.from an earlier sighting of possible debris. This report contains flash
:05:52. > :05:56.photography from the start. ( The search for MH370 has taken many
:05:57. > :05:59.twists and turns. The acting Transport Minister took
:06:00. > :06:07.questions at a press conference. He was handed a note. The news that I
:06:08. > :06:11.just received is that the Chinese ambassador received satellite image
:06:12. > :06:15.of floating objects in the southern corridor. They will be sending ships
:06:16. > :06:19.to verify. This was the new satellite image, released by the
:06:20. > :06:23.Chinese government, showing a huge floating object, but it's hard to
:06:24. > :06:27.make out what it is. Search teams have been scouring the southern
:06:28. > :06:32.corridor for the past three days. Last Sunday, a first image was
:06:33. > :06:35.captured by an Australian satellite, nearly 1500 miles off the coast of
:06:36. > :06:40.Perth. This latest image, was recorded two
:06:41. > :06:45.days later on Tuesday. Showing what might be wreckage, 75 miles
:06:46. > :06:50.south-west of the previous one. So is it the same object? What does
:06:51. > :06:54.it tell investigators? It is highly unlikely that in two days, any
:06:55. > :06:57.debris would have moved in that direction and at that speed. So,
:06:58. > :07:02.we're either looking at something that's completely unrelated or we're
:07:03. > :07:06.looking at parts of the same debris from some form of accident which is
:07:07. > :07:10.spread over quite a wide area. After two weeks of searching, there have
:07:11. > :07:16.been many theories, many false leads. But this latest find could be
:07:17. > :07:20.useful. It will help refocus efforts in what is still nominally a search
:07:21. > :07:25.and rescue operation in the southern Indian Ocean. For those wanting to
:07:26. > :07:30.resolve this mystery, it is, at the very least, a new lead. Families of
:07:31. > :07:36.passengers went to a briefing in Beijing, but tempers flared as
:07:37. > :07:39.Malaysian officials refused to take questions. They accused the
:07:40. > :07:43.Malaysian government of holding back information. We want to know what
:07:44. > :07:46.happened, what the reality is. Many believe their relatives are still
:07:47. > :07:54.alive. Unless wreckage is found, they will be haunted by this hope.
:07:55. > :07:58.Some breaking news, within the past few minutes. The Metropolitan Police
:07:59. > :08:02.have said a teenage girl, believed to be 15 years old, has been shot
:08:03. > :08:06.dead in Hackney in East London. That's all the details we have at
:08:07. > :08:10.the moment. More on that on the BBC News channel.
:08:11. > :08:13.There have been violent clashes between protesters and police in the
:08:14. > :08:17.Spanish capital Madrid tonight. Thousands of demonstrators had
:08:18. > :08:25.gathered to protest against mass unemployment and the Spanish
:08:26. > :08:29.government's austerity measures. A man's appeared in court in
:08:30. > :08:33.Belfast, accused of involvement in one of Northern Irelanded's most
:08:34. > :08:39.notorious murders. Jean McConville, a mother of ten, was abducted and
:08:40. > :08:42.killed in 1972. She was one of the so-called disappeared, people
:08:43. > :08:50.secretly killed and buried by the IRA. Bell, who's 77, was remanded in
:08:51. > :08:53.custody. The photograph Jean McConville's
:08:54. > :08:57.children have of their mother is decades old. In 1972, they watched
:08:58. > :09:02.as she was dragged out of her home by an IRA gang. When do you think
:09:03. > :09:08.you'll see your mummy again? Don't know. Keep our fingers crossed and
:09:09. > :09:14.pray hard for her coming back. They would never see her alive
:09:15. > :09:19.again. She became known as one of the disappeared, people who were
:09:20. > :09:26.abducted, killed and buried in secret by republican paramilitaries.
:09:27. > :09:29.Her remains were finally found and her family were able to hold a
:09:30. > :09:33.funeral. Today, some of her children were in court, to see a man charged
:09:34. > :09:38.in connection with her killing. Ivor Bell is alleged to be a former IRA
:09:39. > :09:42.leader. Today, he was accused of aiding and abetting Jean
:09:43. > :09:46.McConville's murder. Ivor Bell was denied bail. In court, his lawyer
:09:47. > :09:51.indicated that he would be denying all the charges connected to the
:09:52. > :09:56.killing of a wade yod mother. He was -- widowed mother. He was -- any
:09:57. > :10:00.trial has the potential to be difficult for senior republicans.
:10:01. > :10:04.Among those watching the case closely will be the Sinn Fein
:10:05. > :10:08.president, Gerry Adams, last year the BBC broadcast a tape in which
:10:09. > :10:13.his former friend, the late IRA leader Brendan Hughes, accused him
:10:14. > :10:20.of ordering Jean McConville's death over false claims she had passed on
:10:21. > :10:25.information to the British Army. That's something Mr Adams has always
:10:26. > :10:28.strongly denied. The tape of Brendan Hughes was one of many recorded by
:10:29. > :10:33.researchers from an American college, who were building an
:10:34. > :10:36.archive of the trblds. -- Troubles. A US court ruled they should be
:10:37. > :10:39.given to the police in Northern Ireland. It's understand the
:10:40. > :10:43.evidence against Ivor Bell is from an interview he himself gave.
:10:44. > :10:48.Republicans held a protest today against what they see as a political
:10:49. > :10:53.prosecution. It was just streets away from where Jean McConville was
:10:54. > :10:59.kidnapped. OK, all the sport now.
:11:00. > :11:02.Good evening. It was quite a day in the Barclays Premier League. Match
:11:03. > :11:05.of the Day follows the news, so look away now if you don't want to know
:11:06. > :11:09.the results. There were plenty of goals in today's matches. 32 to be
:11:10. > :11:13.precise. Arsene Wenger's 1,000th match in charge of Arsenal went from
:11:14. > :11:17.celebration to desperation at league leaders Chelsea. Arsenal were
:11:18. > :11:20.thrashed 6-0 and had to play much of the game with ten men after the
:11:21. > :11:23.referee, Andre Mariner, sent off the wrong man for a handball incident.
:11:24. > :11:28.Mariner later said he was disappointed with his decision.
:11:29. > :11:31.Luis Suarez continued his phenomenal season with a hat-trick at Cardiff,
:11:32. > :11:38.as Liverpool twice came from behind to win 6-3. And Yaya Toure scored a
:11:39. > :11:43.hat-trick in Manchester City's 5-0 win against Fulham. Fernandinho and
:11:44. > :11:46.Demecheylis rounded off the victory at the Etihad.
:11:47. > :11:49.Elsewhere, Everton moved up to five knowledge the table, following a 3
:11:50. > :11:58.-- fifth in the table following a win.
:11:59. > :12:05.Wayne Rooney scored from the halfway line at West Ham in a 2-0 victory
:12:06. > :12:11.for Manchester United. In the Scottish Premiership: Celtic
:12:12. > :12:14.remain clear at the top after a win over St Mirren, fresh from winning
:12:15. > :12:19.the League Cup last weekend. Aberdeen enjoyed another victory
:12:20. > :12:28.coming from a goal down to beat Kilmarnock.
:12:29. > :12:33.England's cricketers have lost their opening game of the World Twenty20.
:12:34. > :12:38.They were beaten by New Zealand, after the match had to be abandoned
:12:39. > :12:41.due to a thunder storm. Captain Stuart Broad says players were put
:12:42. > :12:44.in danger, as lightning struck around the stadium. He suggested the
:12:45. > :12:47.match should have been stopped sooner.
:12:48. > :12:54.One wicket down to just the third ball of the innings. That was in
:12:55. > :13:02.keeping with England's dismall pretournament form. -- dismal. But
:13:03. > :13:10.England surprised and regrouped through Lumb and Ali. Both departed.
:13:11. > :13:15.Morgan December dismissal left England in danger of being short of
:13:16. > :13:20.a decent score. There was a target of 173. They
:13:21. > :13:24.needed their bowlers to make early strikes. The only ones came from
:13:25. > :13:27.high above though. England's captain Stuart Broad thought the officials
:13:28. > :13:32.should have taken the players off the ground at that point. They
:13:33. > :13:36.stayed out to just -- just long enough for New Zealand to boost
:13:37. > :13:39.their run rate and win the match on the Duckworth Lewis method. England
:13:40. > :13:44.have enough limitations on this tournament, without the weather
:13:45. > :13:47.adding to their woes. Finally, tributes have been paid to
:13:48. > :13:51.Mickey Duff the former boxing, manager and promotor, who has died
:13:52. > :13:55.at the age of 84. He was best known for working with the likes of Frank
:13:56. > :13:58.Bruno, Joe Calzaghe and Alan Minter. That's all the sport for now. Back
:13:59. > :14:01.to you. You can see more on all of today's
:14:02. > :14:03.stories on the BBC News channel. That's it from me and the team here.
:14:04. > :14:18.Good night. Hello again. Lots of showers around
:14:19. > :14:23.today. Lots of hail too. Overnight, the showers are becoming fewer.
:14:24. > :14:26.We'll have long, clear spells across eastern side of the UK. Maybe
:14:27. > :14:29.showers later in the night. Most feed in on the brisk wind across
:14:30. > :14:30.western areas. There will be
