:00:14. > :00:17.the southern Indian Ocean. It's thought they may come from the black

:00:18. > :00:25.box flight recorder. 13 search vessels are now in the area. We are

:00:26. > :00:33.hopeful, but by no means certain, this is the most difficult search in

:00:34. > :00:36.human history. The Culture Secretary Maria Miller is under more pressure

:00:37. > :00:44.as a senior Conservative calls for her to resign. The race today is

:00:45. > :00:47.cancelled. Sheffield half marathon is cancelled moments before the

:00:48. > :00:52.start as organisers ran out of water. And Gerrard's spot on, as

:00:53. > :01:11.Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League.

:01:12. > :01:21.Good evening. A Royal Navy ship HMS Echo, has joined the search in the

:01:22. > :01:24.southern Indian Ocean where electronic signals have been

:01:25. > :01:26.detected in the hunt for the missing Malaysian ailriner. Investigators

:01:27. > :01:29.believe the sounds could be coming from the aircraft's black box flight

:01:30. > :01:34.recorder. Jon Donnison is in Perth where the search is being

:01:35. > :01:38.co-ordinated. After a month-long mystery, the search for MH 370 is

:01:39. > :01:41.now focused on this Chinese ship. The technology looks somewhat crude.

:01:42. > :01:49.Essentially, a large microphone dipped into the water. But it was

:01:50. > :01:52.this device that picked up a possible signals from the missing

:01:53. > :01:55.black box flight recorder. First, just briefly on Friday, and then

:01:56. > :02:02.again from around 90 seconds on Saturday. Now an Australian Navy

:02:03. > :02:12.ship has also registered underwater sounds at a separate location. We

:02:13. > :02:22.had three separate acoustic events. Two with 01. And another one with

:02:23. > :02:27.ocean shield. We are treating each of them very seriously. This is

:02:28. > :02:30.where the Chinese ship detected two sets of signals close together.

:02:31. > :02:35.Around 1000 miles north-west of Perth. The Australians picked up

:02:36. > :02:38.signals around 350 miles away. They were heard by this ship, the ocean

:02:39. > :02:41.shield, which uses a more advanced device. The black box sends out a

:02:42. > :02:47.signal at 37.5 kilohertz. The same frequency as the ones recorded by

:02:48. > :02:50.the Chinese search teams. But the flight recorder's battery only lasts

:02:51. > :03:02.30 days. And it could be miles underwater. The ocean here is up to

:03:03. > :03:04.4500 metres deep. A Royal Navy ship, HMS Echo, carrying advanced search

:03:05. > :03:07.technology, has now arrived in the area to try to verify the Chinese

:03:08. > :03:15.findings. A British nuclear submarine is also close by.

:03:16. > :03:20.Investigators will be hoping this is a breakthrough and not another false

:03:21. > :03:26.lead. But, as the surge from the air also continues, what will worry them

:03:27. > :03:30.is that, after over 150 flights, still no actual wreckage has been

:03:31. > :03:35.found. And we can speak to Jon Donnison now. Is there a real sense

:03:36. > :03:42.that this is the breakthrough the authorities had been looking for? I

:03:43. > :03:45.think the investigators are encouraged but cautious and it

:03:46. > :03:50.interesting we have not heard from the Chinese today. I think some

:03:51. > :03:54.might think was a bad sign and, of course, there were a dozen flights

:03:55. > :04:00.which went up on Sunday, search flights, and they gain came back,

:04:01. > :04:04.having spotted no debris whatsoever. So it would be unusual if the first

:04:05. > :04:08.piece of debris they found was the black box itself. But you do feel

:04:09. > :04:14.that this search is intensifying, rather than easing up, and there is

:04:15. > :04:18.a time pressure, of course. We have black box's batteries which expire

:04:19. > :04:23.after 30 days, exactly where we are now and it's going to be very

:04:24. > :04:26.interesting to see what HMS Echo discovers now it's arrived on the

:04:27. > :04:31.scene with perhaps more state-of-the-art technology on

:04:32. > :04:34.board. Many thanks, John. Lord Tebbit, the former Conservative

:04:35. > :04:39.Party Chairman, has called on the Culture Secretary Maria Miller to

:04:40. > :04:45.resign. He's accused her of arrogance, in the controversy over

:04:46. > :04:47.her expenses claims. The head of the parliamentary expenses watchdog Sir

:04:48. > :04:50.Ian Kennedy, says MPs should no longer have powers to overrule

:04:51. > :04:56.investigators, as they did in Mrs Miller's case. Here's our Political

:04:57. > :04:59.Correspondent Gary O'Donoghue. Four days on and Maria Miller is still

:05:00. > :05:02.under pressure over the expenses she came in the way she handled

:05:03. > :05:08.investigation into her affairs by the Parliamentary authorities and

:05:09. > :05:11.her fellow MPs. Now Lord Tebbit has become the first Conservative to

:05:12. > :05:19.call for her resignation describing Mrs Miller as arrogant. That comes

:05:20. > :05:21.on top of a call from the chairman of the independent Parliamentary

:05:22. > :05:29.standards authority which oversees MPs expenses to reform the system

:05:30. > :05:38.further. Sir Ian Kennedy told a Sunday newspaper:

:05:39. > :05:48.I, of course, unreservedly apologise. Despite that brief

:05:49. > :05:57.apology, Maria Miller's case has highlighted what some see as a

:05:58. > :05:59.continuing weakness in the system. In Mrs Miller's case, a

:06:00. > :06:02.Parliamentary standards Commissioner who investigated her recommended you

:06:03. > :06:09.should give back more than ?45,000 in mortgage payments. But the ten

:06:10. > :06:13.MPs and three lay members on the common standards committee reduced

:06:14. > :06:16.that to less than ?6000. Today the Work and Pensions Secretary gave his

:06:17. > :06:19.backing to Maria Miller but became the most senior government member to

:06:20. > :06:23.acknowledge the system might have to change. I'm very happy for that to

:06:24. > :06:26.be debated. I'm amongst a number of those who feel this goes on and on

:06:27. > :06:30.and on eating away at the credibility of Parliament. Whatever

:06:31. > :06:35.it takes to restore the credibility. He may have a point? I'm very open

:06:36. > :06:44.to independent people looking at this. The sooner we can get rid of

:06:45. > :06:47.this nonsense about. The better. Expenses can have also hit Labour

:06:48. > :06:51.had in the past. These are among the five Labour MPs who went to prison.

:06:52. > :06:59.Now the party says reform has to come. It's not just about what goes

:07:00. > :07:02.on inside Westminster but about what the public regard that as

:07:03. > :07:06.acceptable. And I think it's clear from what's gone on in the last few

:07:07. > :07:09.days of the moment we don't have a system that commands public support.

:07:10. > :07:12.Labour want reform but they're not saying what it should be. No one is

:07:13. > :07:15.saying if the Prime Minister wants change. As for Maria Miller herself,

:07:16. > :07:18.well, the Tory party chairman Grant Shapps repeatedly declined to give

:07:19. > :07:27.her his full backing today. So this one isn't over yet. There have been

:07:28. > :07:30.several large pro-Russia demonstrations in cities across

:07:31. > :07:33.eastern Ukraine today. Some of which turned violent. In Donetsk, a large

:07:34. > :07:35.group of people broke into the provincial government building,

:07:36. > :07:37.demanding a referendum on a separate republic for the region. The

:07:38. > :07:43.country's interim President has cancelled a trip abroad to deal with

:07:44. > :07:46.the protests. President Obama has congratulated Afghanistan on what he

:07:47. > :07:49.called a landmark election. He said the poll to choose a successor to

:07:50. > :07:53.President Hamid Karzai was critical in securing the country's democratic

:07:54. > :08:00.future. Election officials have begun counting the estimated seven

:08:01. > :08:04.million ballots. Our correspondent David Loyn reports from Kabul. In a

:08:05. > :08:06.huge logistical operation after a larger than expected turnout, ballot

:08:07. > :08:11.boxes have been moving across Afghanistan all day as the counts

:08:12. > :08:14.get underway. Seven million people, third of them women, braved Taliban

:08:15. > :08:23.intimidation and bad weather to vote. Women trying to get into vote

:08:24. > :08:27.broke down the door of a polling station in the North. Afghanistan in

:08:28. > :08:29.general, and Afghan women, went through a moment, a historic moment

:08:30. > :08:37.yesterday, coming to the polling centres and casting their ballots.

:08:38. > :08:42.With the campaign ever, candidates are making unofficial claims about

:08:43. > :08:48.their standing. The former finance minister Ashraf Ghani said he's

:08:49. > :08:51.ahead. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, there has to

:08:52. > :09:03.be another round of voting between the top two. Unless one withdraws.

:09:04. > :09:08.Speaking to the BBC, Ashraf Ghani has, for the first time, said he's

:09:09. > :09:11.against a deal. There has to be a clear winner so we can say the

:09:12. > :09:14.public gave us a mandate. Negotiation behind the doors is

:09:15. > :09:24.going to deprive the public of the voice. The other leading candidate

:09:25. > :09:29.once the deal rather than having a second round. Now the real politics

:09:30. > :09:32.begins. After more than three decades of conflict left so much of

:09:33. > :09:36.Afghanistan in ruins, the election campaign ignited real interest. Now

:09:37. > :09:39.one of the leading candidates tells us he wants a second-round. So it's

:09:40. > :09:49.clear who the democratically elected leader of Afghanistan is going to

:09:50. > :09:52.be. Thousands of runners defied officials in Sheffield this morning

:09:53. > :09:53.and decided to run the city's half-marathon, despite it's

:09:54. > :10:02.cancellation because supplies of water didn't arrive. Chaos followed

:10:03. > :10:08.as many people ignore the announcement and ran the race

:10:09. > :10:11.anyway. Anne-Marie Tasker explains. More than 5000 runners struggle to

:10:12. > :10:19.keep warm up before hearing over the tannoy the racers. The race today is

:10:20. > :10:24.cancelled. The majority set off anyway. Unbelievably, for a half

:10:25. > :10:34.marathon, none of the water was essential for the race and it was

:10:35. > :10:37.not delivered. The race, first of all this morning, the water browsers

:10:38. > :10:40.we order did not arrive so then we went round the supermarket around

:10:41. > :10:43.Sheffield run the route to get what ought to be covered and they also

:10:44. > :10:48.contacted other branches and got what order they could. We delayed

:10:49. > :10:52.the start but then it became obvious we still haven't found enough water.

:10:53. > :10:55.Those taking part were determined to complete the race. Spectators

:10:56. > :11:01.brought their own water to make up for the lack of official supplies.

:11:02. > :11:04.It was a bit of a shambles really. We were on the starting line for

:11:05. > :11:08.about an hour before we actually went, which is not good when you're

:11:09. > :11:13.trying to keep yourself warm in the cold weather. I heard it had been

:11:14. > :11:20.cancelled. I didn't even know that, actually. We went going to let it

:11:21. > :11:23.stop as. To be honest, Sheffield people did fantastic. In a city

:11:24. > :11:28.known for its sporting excellence, this is an embarrassment, one they

:11:29. > :11:32.won't want to repeat and this year the people of Sheffield rallied

:11:33. > :11:38.round. They hope next year that won't be necessary. With all the

:11:39. > :11:44.sport, here's Katherine Downes at the BBC Sport Centre.

:11:45. > :11:47.Good evening. Liverpool are back on the top of the Premier League after

:11:48. > :11:51.beating West Ham 2-1. Their ninth win in a row. There were three

:11:52. > :11:54.points for Everton as well. They beat Arsenal 3-0 to strengthen their

:11:55. > :11:57.chances of a Champions League place next season. Tim Hague reports on a

:11:58. > :12:01.successful day for the Merseyside clubs.

:12:02. > :12:08.But neither calm exterior thoughts of the title must be bubbling away

:12:09. > :12:12.for Brendan Rodgers. Liverpool, top of the table. Luis Suarez Mac' nine

:12:13. > :12:17.girls have helped with that and he came so close to number 30. Wiley

:12:18. > :12:24.couldn't score, he played provider. West Ham handball in the box and

:12:25. > :12:31.Steven Gerrard made 1-0 yet Liverpool's past came back to bite

:12:32. > :12:35.them. It seemed at first. The referee, Anthony Taylor, overruled

:12:36. > :12:43.the assistant who said there was a foul. Liverpool, furious, because

:12:44. > :12:46.there was one and guess who from. Former Liverpool player, Andy

:12:47. > :12:50.Carroll. He almost put West Ham ahead after half-time thumping the

:12:51. > :12:54.bar with a header. Before more controversy. The referee giving

:12:55. > :12:58.Liverpool a second penalty when the goalkeeper clearly won the ball

:12:59. > :13:02.first but to win the league, you need luck. Steven Gerrard made the

:13:03. > :13:07.most of it. Three points for Liverpool and their eyes are firmly

:13:08. > :13:10.fixed on the title. On Merseyside, Liverpool 's local rivals Everton

:13:11. > :13:15.blew the race for Champions League football wide open. They outplayed

:13:16. > :13:19.Arsenal going 2-0 in the first half before making it three in the

:13:20. > :13:24.second. A victory which means Everton no trial The Gunners by one

:13:25. > :13:28.point with a game in hand. When Martinez took over last summer, he

:13:29. > :13:30.said he would provide Champions League football for Everton. There

:13:31. > :13:35.where laughs but no one is laughing now. Oxford have won the 160th boat

:13:36. > :13:42.race. They beat Cambridge by 11 lengths to claim their fifth win in

:13:43. > :13:45.seven years. Our Correspondent Jon Brain is at the finish line, and

:13:46. > :13:53.Jon, a fairly easy victory for Oxford in the end? It was, and

:13:54. > :13:57.Oxford's preparations this had been hampered by the flooding which

:13:58. > :14:00.caused disruption across the UK. But with three medallists on their crew,

:14:01. > :14:05.they still arrived here as firm favourites. It wasn't without

:14:06. > :14:12.incident. Just a few minutes in, there was an apparent clash of wars

:14:13. > :14:14.between the two crews and Cambridge Micah boss Luca Docket lost control

:14:15. > :14:18.of his. From then on, the contest was effectively over. Oxford built

:14:19. > :14:23.up a commanding lead which they never looked like winning pushing

:14:24. > :14:28.and across the line 11 lengths to spare. The 78th victory in the boat

:14:29. > :14:33.race, now just three wins away from their great rivals. OK, thank you

:14:34. > :14:36.very much. Great Britain have missed out on a first Davis Cup semi final

:14:37. > :14:40.in 33 years. They lost their quarter final to Italy, having started the

:14:41. > :14:46.day with a 2-1 lead. But Andy Murray was beaten in straight sets by

:14:47. > :14:49.clay-court specialist Fabio Fognini. And James Ward lost the deciding

:14:50. > :14:56.rubber to Andreas Seppi. England's women have been convincingly beaten

:14:57. > :14:59.in the final of the T20 World Cup. They lost to Australia by six

:15:00. > :15:02.wickets. England could only manage a hundred and five for eight off their

:15:03. > :15:04.20 overs. And Australia reached their target with four-and-a-half

:15:05. > :15:09.overs to spare. England captain Charlotte Edwards admitted her side

:15:10. > :15:13.were completely outplayed. Highlights of the Bahrain Grand Prix

:15:14. > :15:16.will be on BBC Two later tonight so look away now if you don't want to

:15:17. > :15:20.know what happened. The third race of the season was won by Mercedes'

:15:21. > :15:23.Lewis Hamilton. His team-mate Nico Rosberg started from pole position,

:15:24. > :15:27.but Hamilton took the lead on the first corner and the pair battled it

:15:28. > :15:30.out right up to the chequered flag. Hamilton held on to claim his second

:15:31. > :15:39.Grand Prix this season. Mercedes have won all three so far. That's

:15:40. > :15:44.all the sport. Many thanks. There's more throughout

:15:45. > :15:45.the evening on the BBC News Channel. And I'll be back with the late
