:00:24. > :00:28.Good evening. The captain of the South Korean

:00:29. > :00:31.ferry which capsized with hundreds of children on board has been

:00:32. > :00:33.explaining why he did not order everyone to leave the ship

:00:34. > :00:37.straightaway. The captain, who's under arrest, said he'd feared that

:00:38. > :00:41.strong currents in the sea made evacuation too great a risk. Efforts

:00:42. > :00:45.to reach the 270 missing passengers are continuing. And, as Lucy

:00:46. > :00:48.Williamson reports, families waiting for news were shown footage shot by

:00:49. > :00:55.divers, of the search operation in progress.

:00:56. > :01:00.Inside this once-crowded ship, divers search for any signs of life.

:01:01. > :01:05.Alone in the darkness, the only comfort... A way back out. Four days

:01:06. > :01:12.on, this footage only feeds frustration. Something is dying here

:01:13. > :01:16.among the families - hope. Officials offer reasons for why so few have

:01:17. > :01:20.been recovered. But for families told they'll have to live another

:01:21. > :01:30.day without their children, this is the response. "What are the divers

:01:31. > :01:34.actually doing?" one woman says. "Our children are dying". Arrested

:01:35. > :01:40.and charged with negligence, the captain said he delayed the

:01:41. > :01:46.evacuation to protect people. TRANSLATION: At the time, the

:01:47. > :01:49.current was very strong. The temperature of the ocean water was

:01:50. > :01:52.cold and I thought that it people left the ferry without proper

:01:53. > :01:56.judgement, if they were not wearing a life jacket and even if they were,

:01:57. > :02:03.they would drift away and face many other difficulties.

:02:04. > :02:07.But would this accident have happened if he'd been on the bridge?

:02:08. > :02:11.And if, as emerged today, the helmsman hadn't let a 25-year-old

:02:12. > :02:19.crewmember try her hand at steering the ship? Now, under these waves

:02:20. > :02:23.lies the fate of a town. Their wives, uncles, children and friends.

:02:24. > :02:31.40 times today they tried to get inside to find them. But this ferry

:02:32. > :02:35.isn't giving up its secrets quickly. Boats are coming in from the site

:02:36. > :02:39.every day now, but divers said the currents in the area are so strong

:02:40. > :02:42.their oxygen masks are being swept away and visibility is so low, they

:02:43. > :02:45.can only see about half a metre in front of them. Finding hundreds of

:02:46. > :02:51.passengers is in conditions like that is going to take time. More

:02:52. > :02:57.bodies were brought ashore tonight, found drifting in the water around

:02:58. > :03:06.the wreck. A few more families ruined, a little less reason for

:03:07. > :03:09.hope. As Christians around the world mark

:03:10. > :03:13.Holy Week and prepare for Easter Sunday tomorrow, in Syria their

:03:14. > :03:15.faith is increasingly under attack. Christian leaders have been

:03:16. > :03:20.specifically targeted and churches desecrated. Like other communities,

:03:21. > :03:23.many Christians have been forced to flee the country. Our Chief

:03:24. > :03:24.International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet, spoke to some of those

:03:25. > :03:36.who've decided to stay. For serious Christians, the start of

:03:37. > :03:46.Holy Week is a time to hold fast to rituals. Especially such joyous

:03:47. > :03:52.occasions in the saddest of times. There is no peace now, just daily

:03:53. > :03:57.violence. A mortar round struck a Christian school this week, 60

:03:58. > :04:02.children and teachers were injured. This nine-year-old girl waits the

:04:03. > :04:08.surgery on her leg. She tells me it's broken and burning. "You are a

:04:09. > :04:13.brave girl", I say. TRANSLATION: Yes, we are brave, but

:04:14. > :04:19.what does it mean? Other children were injured. A lot of blood spilled

:04:20. > :04:24.on the floor in our courtyard. And our principal, she is in surgery

:04:25. > :04:27.now. A lot of teachers were injured. The girl and her classmates were

:04:28. > :04:31.playing in their schoolyard in the Christian quarter of the old city,

:04:32. > :04:36.when the mortar landed. Dozens now strike Damascus every day, believed

:04:37. > :04:40.to be fired by rebels. The Syrian army pounds their position on the

:04:41. > :04:45.edges of this city. In Syria now attacks take place on a daily basis.

:04:46. > :04:50.Some are targeted, some like this are indiscriminate. Syrian

:04:51. > :04:54.Christians tell us they are not the only one suffering in this brutal

:04:55. > :04:57.war. But for them, the pain over their individual losses is deepened

:04:58. > :05:08.by their anxiety over the fate of their entire community. This week St

:05:09. > :05:11.Paul's Church in Damascus was full for Father Franz, a Dutch Jesuit

:05:12. > :05:17.priest murdered in this city of Homms. A towering figure who

:05:18. > :05:23.inspired Syrians of all faiths with his courage and commitment to this

:05:24. > :05:28.country. I am afraid about the future of the Christian community.

:05:29. > :05:31.If the majority of Christians, if they had the possibility to get out

:05:32. > :05:41.of Syria and to find asylum elsewhere, they would leave, 90% I

:05:42. > :05:47.would say. On the other hand, some people have made the decision to

:05:48. > :05:50.stay. For Christians, Holy Week marks the death and resurrection of

:05:51. > :06:04.Jesus. Now, they also pray for the revival of their country and their

:06:05. > :06:09.place within it. The England cricket team has a new

:06:10. > :06:12.coach. He's Peter Moores. He takes charge of a squad battered by this

:06:13. > :06:15.winter's disastrous Ashes Tour. But Moores is no stranger to the job,

:06:16. > :06:22.having coached the team previously. Here's our sports reporter Ben

:06:23. > :06:27.Smith. After a winter of discontent, is

:06:28. > :06:31.this the man to build a brighter future? Peter Moores is a face from

:06:32. > :06:37.the past, but five years after being sacked, he is back in charge. He

:06:38. > :06:46.inherits a site that is licking its wounds after five nil humiliation by

:06:47. > :06:51.Australia. It is a special thing to play for England. There is some

:06:52. > :06:55.great players who have done it before, and there will be great

:06:56. > :06:58.players in the future. The players need to know if it does not feel

:06:59. > :07:06.special, then there is something wrong. He saw off the challenge of

:07:07. > :07:09.Ashley Giles who was tipped to get the job. Alistair Cook welcomed the

:07:10. > :07:16.appointment but admitted England now -- have a way to go to regain their

:07:17. > :07:20.status as the best test side in the world. We have a huge amount of

:07:21. > :07:25.talent in the country and it is an exciting time to be an England

:07:26. > :07:33.player. England have been here before. In 2007, he was seen as the

:07:34. > :07:37.man to lift England after a whitewash Ashes series. Only for a

:07:38. > :07:44.high-profile row with Kevin Pietersen to cost him his job. Kevin

:07:45. > :07:51.Pietersen said this morning, everyone deserves a second chance.

:07:52. > :07:54.Kevin Pietersen will not be a factor with the clear message from Lord's

:07:55. > :08:05.today, there is no way back for Kevin Pietersen. But they are close

:08:06. > :08:08.to appointing an assistant. In Peter Moores, England have gone back to

:08:09. > :08:11.the future. A family's outing to Longleat Safari

:08:12. > :08:15.Park took a dramatic turn when their car caught fire in the lion

:08:16. > :08:16.enclosure. Witnesses captured the moment yesterday when the car burst

:08:17. > :08:19.into flames. Rangers had rescued the passengers - a woman and two

:08:20. > :08:23.children, after clearing the lions from the enclosure. A spokesman from

:08:24. > :08:25.the park said the blaze was put out quickly and that neither people nor

:08:26. > :08:28.lions were hurt. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

:08:29. > :08:32.have paid tribute to Australia's air force during the latest leg of their

:08:33. > :08:36.tour of the country. William and Kate met servicemen and women at an

:08:37. > :08:43.air base in Brisbane, as our Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell

:08:44. > :08:50.reports. They are Australia's defence forces

:08:51. > :08:53.and their loyalty is to the Crown. When William and Catherine visited a

:08:54. > :09:02.military base, there was a ceremonial welcome for them. The

:09:03. > :09:07.couple were in Queens land, the sunshine State and temperatures were

:09:08. > :09:11.into the 80s. Catherine had chosen a light, some address, just the thing

:09:12. > :09:15.for the heat you would imagine, but not the thing when William invited

:09:16. > :09:27.her to climb into an F-18 jet fighter. You would look good in the

:09:28. > :09:34.back, said William. But with William in the rear seat, she had little

:09:35. > :09:39.option. She eased herself carefully into the front cockpit. That is

:09:40. > :09:44.where the person in charge sits, of course. In Brisbane, a crowd

:09:45. > :09:50.estimated at around 10,000, had a long wait for a short walkabout. It

:09:51. > :09:54.was a brief, but in tense encounter for the couple would be interest

:09:55. > :10:00.people have in them and in baby George. Loyalty to the Crown has

:10:01. > :10:02.been shown with fascination with celebrity as we see here on the
