:00:19. > :00:24.Good afternoon. The captain of the South Korean ferry which capsized

:00:25. > :00:27.with hundreds of school students on board has been explaining his

:00:28. > :00:35.decision not to order everyone to leave the ship at once. The captain,

:00:36. > :00:39.who's under arrest said he'd feared that the strong currents in the sea

:00:40. > :00:41.made evacuation too great a risk. Efforts to recover more bodies from

:00:42. > :00:48.the ship are continuing. 270 passengers are still missing. At

:00:49. > :00:57.least 32 bodies have been recovered so far. Martin Patience reports. For

:00:58. > :01:05.four days now, waiting the good news that has never come. Some relatives

:01:06. > :01:12.are quiet. Others are distraught. Knowing the chances of finding

:01:13. > :01:20.anyone alive are now remote. A few take out and on rescue officials,

:01:21. > :01:27.such is their despair. The families watch live pictures of the operation

:01:28. > :01:30.at sea. Battling strong currents, divers continue the search for the

:01:31. > :01:36.hundreds of students trapped inside the ferry. The captain, now under

:01:37. > :01:45.arrest, has explained what he didn't order an immediate evacuation.

:01:46. > :01:47.TRANSLATION: At the time, the current was very strong. The

:01:48. > :01:51.temperature of the ocean water was cold and I thought that if people

:01:52. > :01:55.left the ferry without proper judgement, if they were not wearing

:01:56. > :02:03.a life jacket, and even if they were, they would drift away and face

:02:04. > :02:08.many other difficulties. One father can't forget the last phone call

:02:09. > :02:14.from his daughter. She told him water was pouring in. TRANSLATION: I

:02:15. > :02:20.just said, keep calm. Because of her stupid father... If I had told to

:02:21. > :02:24.jump out of the boat, she would have survived. But I told her to keep

:02:25. > :02:31.calm. Because of me, she is out there. This is a reminder of the

:02:32. > :02:34.scale of this disaster. The authorities have brought in dozens

:02:35. > :02:38.of ambulances down to the port side for win more bodies are brought in.

:02:39. > :02:45.They have also set up a huge white tent over my shoulder which will act

:02:46. > :02:48.as a temporary morgue. Some still pray that survivors will be found.

:02:49. > :02:57.But others are coming to terms with their loss. It is darkness now in

:02:58. > :03:02.gender. As we saw in your report, hope turning to anger among many

:03:03. > :03:08.relatives. All that while more bodies are brought off the wreck.

:03:09. > :03:13.Yes, officially this remains a search and rescue operation but it

:03:14. > :03:16.is day four of the disaster. For many families there is a growing

:03:17. > :03:20.realisation that their sons and daughters and other relatives will

:03:21. > :03:25.not be coming home. In the last half an hour, the Coast Guard has brought

:03:26. > :03:31.ashore three more bodies, and that is likely to be a pattern that will

:03:32. > :03:39.continue over the coming days. What more do we know about what actually

:03:40. > :03:44.caused his wreck? More details are emerging. It was a junior officer

:03:45. > :03:47.who was at the helm of the ferry and prosecutors say they are

:03:48. > :03:51.investigating whether a sharp turn made by the ferry may have caused it

:03:52. > :03:56.to capsize. Others are suggesting that perhaps cargo loosened and that

:03:57. > :04:01.made the ship list beyond the point of no return. There are also

:04:02. > :04:05.suggestions that the ferry may have hit a rock or reef but until now

:04:06. > :04:09.there has been no official confirmation on the cause of the

:04:10. > :04:11.crash. Thank you. Police in Northern Ireland have

:04:12. > :04:13.arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the murder of a

:04:14. > :04:17.former dissident republican leader in Belfast. It's understood that

:04:18. > :04:22.Tommy Crossan was shot several times. He was once a senior figure

:04:23. > :04:24.in the Continuity IRA, but had received death threats after

:04:25. > :04:31.disagreements with other members of the organisation.

:04:32. > :04:34.A seven year old boy who was badly burned in an Aberdeen street has

:04:35. > :04:40.been moved to a specialist hospital unit where he is in a critical

:04:41. > :04:45.condition. Preston Flores was found by neighbours "on fire" at two

:04:46. > :04:48.o'clock yesterday afternoon. Police are investigating whether petrol

:04:49. > :04:54.could have been involved but say there is "no evidence so far of any

:04:55. > :04:57.deliberate act". Teachers are expected to back fresh

:04:58. > :05:01.walk-outs in the summer if progress is not made in resolving the dispute

:05:02. > :05:04.over pay, pensions and conditions. Delegates at the NUT annual

:05:05. > :05:09.conference will debate further industrial action this afternoon.

:05:10. > :05:19.Our Education Correspondent, Reeta Chakrabarti, is at the Conference in

:05:20. > :05:23.Brighton for us now. Yes, delegates will vote on further strike action

:05:24. > :05:29.to be carried out in June, they will vote on that this afternoon. The NUT

:05:30. > :05:32.went out on strike last month in its continuing dispute with the

:05:33. > :05:36.government over pay, pensions and workload and say they could be

:05:37. > :05:41.further strike action if there is no progress in its talk with the

:05:42. > :05:45.government. Meanwhile, at the conference taking place at the same

:05:46. > :05:49.time in Birmingham, the Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt

:05:50. > :05:55.has linked allegations that Muslim hardliners seeking to take over some

:05:56. > :05:58.of Birmingham's schools where the government's academies programme. He

:05:59. > :06:02.condemned what he called narrow religious motives and said academy

:06:03. > :06:06.'s, which are independent of local authority control, should be

:06:07. > :06:11.overseen at a local level. It is unclear how many of the schools is

:06:12. > :06:14.being investigated are academies. There are several enquiries going on

:06:15. > :06:20.to try and establish the truth of the allegations.

:06:21. > :06:24.The England cricket team has a new coach. He's Peter Moores - and takes

:06:25. > :06:27.charge of a squad battered by last year's disastrous Ashes series. But

:06:28. > :06:29.Moores is no stranger to the job, having coached the team previously.

:06:30. > :06:39.Our Sports Correspondent Ben Smith is at Lords. How big a challenge

:06:40. > :06:45.ahead? It's a huge challenge, after a winter that English cricket is

:06:46. > :06:48.doing its best to forget. You mention the human elation at the

:06:49. > :06:53.hands of Australia in the Ashes, there was also embarrassment at the

:06:54. > :06:57.hands of lowly Holland in Bangladesh. But here at Lord's there

:06:58. > :07:01.was a hope and belief that maybe this is the start of a new era,

:07:02. > :07:05.chance to wipe the slate clean up so much disappointment. I started by

:07:06. > :07:08.speaking to the new coach Peter Moores and asked how he would lift

:07:09. > :07:13.the spirits of the English players after that winter. To play for

:07:14. > :07:17.England is very special, if it's not, you shouldn't be playing for

:07:18. > :07:22.England. If it ever becomes a normal day, we have picked the wrong

:07:23. > :07:25.person. I don't see it as my response ability to lift them, it is

:07:26. > :07:30.their responsibility to be lifted, it is the job of the coach and

:07:31. > :07:36.captain to connect them to make sure we are part of something together

:07:37. > :07:39.because then we can be a force. One player who went been bold is Kevin

:07:40. > :07:44.Pietersen. His name was on the lips of everyone today but it was clear

:07:45. > :07:48.both from Peter Moores and from the managing director of the ECB that

:07:49. > :07:51.Kevin Pietersen will no longer play for England, that message couldn't

:07:52. > :07:58.have been clearer. England are looking to the future and hope this

:07:59. > :08:01.is the start of the new dawn. A family's outing to Longleat Safari

:08:02. > :08:04.Park took a dramatic turn when their car caught fire in the lion

:08:05. > :08:07.enclosure. Witnesses captured the moment yesterday when the car

:08:08. > :08:10.overheated and burst into flames. Rangers rescued a woman and two

:08:11. > :08:14.children from the car, after clearing the lions from the

:08:15. > :08:18.enclosure. A spokesman from the park said the blaze was put out quickly,

:08:19. > :08:23.and that no people - or lions - were hurt.

:08:24. > :08:26.The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid tribute to Australia's air

:08:27. > :08:30.force during the latest leg of their tour of the country. William and

:08:31. > :08:33.Kate both took to the cockpit of a fighter jet while visiting an air

:08:34. > :08:40.base in Brisbane. From there, our Royal Correspondent Nicholas

:08:41. > :08:44.Witchell reports. They are the Royal Australian air

:08:45. > :08:49.force and their loyalty is to the Crown, just as it has been for

:08:50. > :08:52.generations. 100 years ago Australian servicemen fought in the

:08:53. > :08:55.First World War in the name of William's great-great-grandfather

:08:56. > :09:01.George V and within Australia... Defence forces, the link to the

:09:02. > :09:05.Crown is still strong. William and Catherine were given a ceremonial

:09:06. > :09:11.welcome to a huge Royal Australian Air Force Base near Brisbane in

:09:12. > :09:15.Queensland. Temperatures were in the 80s, light-coloured summer dress was

:09:16. > :09:19.Kate's choice, ideal for the heat. Not such a good choice, you might

:09:20. > :09:25.think, for climbing into the cockpit of a jet fighter, but somehow she

:09:26. > :09:29.managed it. In the memorial garden, the couple planted a tree in

:09:30. > :09:33.remembrance of the limbs of the Australian air forces fought

:09:34. > :09:39.alongside Britain and had given their lives, another reminder of

:09:40. > :09:44.heritage that has been shared. Then the other side of a royal visit, the

:09:45. > :09:49.walkabout and the public fascination with this couple. Several thousand

:09:50. > :09:53.had enjoyed a long wait in the sun in central Brisbane. In truth, the

:09:54. > :10:01.area of the walkabout was just a few hundred metres, not much space but

:10:02. > :10:04.plenty of enthusiasm. The latest on the royal tour there.

:10:05. > :10:08.That's all from me. The next news on BBC One is at 6.40pm, but there's

:10:09. > :10:25.more throughout the day on the BBC News Channel. Goodbye.

:10:26. > :10:30.A lot of dry weather out there which won't disappoint for this is to

:10:31. > :10:35.weekend but I suspect the feel of the weather might disappoint one or

:10:36. > :10:38.two. Some sunny spells around but a breeze coming in off the North Sea,

:10:39. > :10:39.bear that in mind if you are
