:00:00. > :00:10.The first bodies have been recovered from from the wrecked South Korean

:00:11. > :00:13.ferry. Divers found them as they searched for more than 260 missing

:00:14. > :00:16.passengers, most of them schoolchildren.

:00:17. > :00:24.The plight of Christians caught up in Syria's civil war. Under daily

:00:25. > :00:27.attack across the country. Peter Moores is given a second

:00:28. > :00:30.chance as England cricket coach. Kate joins the jet-set as the Duke

:00:31. > :00:48.and Duchess of Cambridge pay tribute to Australia's air force.

:00:49. > :00:54.Good evening. Divers have removed the first bodies from inside the

:00:55. > :00:59.South Korean ferry which capsized with hundreds of schoolchildren on

:01:00. > :01:02.board. Three bodies were pulled out bringing the confirmed death toll to

:01:03. > :01:07.36, with more than 260 still missing. Meanwhile, prosecutors have

:01:08. > :01:10.revealed that the vessel was being steered by an inexperienced officer

:01:11. > :01:16.who was navigating the area for the first time. Families waiting for

:01:17. > :01:19.news of their loved ones have been shown video of the search operation

:01:20. > :01:27.in progress, as Lucy Williamson reports.

:01:28. > :01:33.Inside this once crowded ship divers search for any signs of life, alone

:01:34. > :01:38.in darkness, the only comfort a way back out. Four days on, this footage

:01:39. > :01:45.only feeds frustration. Something is dying here among the families, hope.

:01:46. > :01:49.Officials offer reasons for why so few have been recovered. But for

:01:50. > :01:58.families told they'll have to live another day without their children

:01:59. > :02:02.this is the response. What are the divers actually doing,

:02:03. > :02:08.one woman says? Our children are dying. Arrested and charged with

:02:09. > :02:15.negligence, the captain said he delayed the evacuation to protect

:02:16. > :02:21.people. TRANSLATION: At the time the current

:02:22. > :02:24.was very strong, the temperature of the water was cold and I thought if

:02:25. > :02:28.people left the ferry without proper judgment, if they were not wearing a

:02:29. > :02:34.lifejacket and even if they were, they would drift away and face many

:02:35. > :02:38.other difficulties. But would this accident have happened if he had

:02:39. > :02:45.been on the bridge? And if, as emerged today, the helmsman hadn't

:02:46. > :02:50.let a 25-year-old crew member try her hand at steering the ship. Now

:02:51. > :02:55.under these waves lies the fate of a town, their wives, uncles, children

:02:56. > :03:01.and friends. 40 times today they tried to get inside to find them,

:03:02. > :03:05.but this ferry isn't giving up its secrets quickly. Boats are coming in

:03:06. > :03:10.from the site every day now but divers say that currents in the area

:03:11. > :03:14.are so strong their oxygen masks are being swept away and visibility is

:03:15. > :03:18.so low they can only see about half a metre in front of them. Finding

:03:19. > :03:25.hundreds of passengers in conditions like that is going to take time.

:03:26. > :03:39.More bodies were brought ashore tonight, a few more families ruined,

:03:40. > :03:42.a little less reason for hope. The police in Belfast are

:03:43. > :03:44.questioning a 26-year-old man in connection with the murder of a

:03:45. > :03:48.former dissident republican leader. Tommy Crossan, who used to be a

:03:49. > :03:50.senior figure in the Continuity IRA, was shot dead yesterday evening.

:03:51. > :03:54.Detectives have appealed for help tracking down those responsible for

:03:55. > :03:57.what they described as a brutal and barbaric killing.

:03:58. > :03:59.Ukraine's government has suspended operations against pro-Russian

:04:00. > :04:06.activists occupying government buildings in the east of the

:04:07. > :04:09.country. Kiev said the truce would hold over the Easter weekend while

:04:10. > :04:13.an international deal to end the crisis is implemented. However,

:04:14. > :04:16.Ukraine's Foreign Minister has warned that action could resume next

:04:17. > :04:23.week unless so-called militants observe the new Geneva agreement and

:04:24. > :04:27.surrender. As Christians around the world mark Holy Week and prepare for

:04:28. > :04:34.Easter Sunday tomorrow, in Syria, their faith is increasingly under

:04:35. > :04:36.attack. Christian leaders have been specifically targeted, and churches

:04:37. > :04:39.desecrated. Like other communities, many Christians have been forced to

:04:40. > :04:42.flee the country. Our chief international correspondent Lyse

:04:43. > :04:53.Doucet spoke to some of those who've decided to stay.

:04:54. > :05:01.For Syria's Christians the start of Holy Week is a time to hold fast to

:05:02. > :05:08.rituals. Especially such joyous occasions in the saddest of times.

:05:09. > :05:14.There's no peace now, just daily violence. A mortar round struck a

:05:15. > :05:19.Christian school this week. 60 children and teachers were injured.

:05:20. > :05:25.One nine-year-old waits for surgery on her leg. She tells me it's broken

:05:26. > :05:29.and burning. You are a brave girl, I say.

:05:30. > :05:34.TRANSLATION: Yes, we are brave but what does it mean? All the children

:05:35. > :05:40.were injured. A lot of blood spilled on the floor in our courtyard. Our

:05:41. > :05:46.principal is in surgery now, a lot of teachers were injured.

:05:47. > :05:51.They were playing in the schoolyard in the Christian quarter of the old

:05:52. > :05:55.city when a mortar landed. Dozens now strike Damascus every day,

:05:56. > :06:00.believed to be fired by rebels. The Syrian army pounds their positions

:06:01. > :06:04.on the edges of the city. In Syria now attacks take place on a daily

:06:05. > :06:09.basis. Some are targeted, some like this are indiscriminate. Syrian

:06:10. > :06:13.Christians tell us they're not the only ones suffering in brutal war.

:06:14. > :06:20.But for them the pain over their individual losses is deepened by

:06:21. > :06:26.their anxiety over the fate of their entire community.

:06:27. > :06:35.This week St Paul's Church in Damascus was full of sorrow for a

:06:36. > :06:39.Dutch Jesuit priest murdered. A towering figure who inspired Syrians

:06:40. > :06:44.of all faith by his courage and commitment to this country. I am

:06:45. > :06:51.afraid about the future of the Christian community. The majority of

:06:52. > :06:56.Christians, if they had that possibility to get out of Syria and

:06:57. > :07:02.to be asylums elsewhere, they would leave, 90% I would say. On the other

:07:03. > :07:09.hand, some people who made the decision to stay. For Christians

:07:10. > :07:13.Holy Week marks the death and resurrection of Jesus, now they also

:07:14. > :07:21.pray for the revival of their country and their place within it.

:07:22. > :07:24.A seven-year-old boy who was badly burnt in Aberdeen is in a critical

:07:25. > :07:28.condition in hospital. Preston Flores suffered burns to much of his

:07:29. > :07:33.body after an incident thought to have involved petrol on Friday. The

:07:34. > :07:42.police say the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

:07:43. > :07:45.The National Union of Teachers has stepped back from a major escalation

:07:46. > :07:49.of industrial action this autumn but it could still go ahead with a

:07:50. > :07:52.one-day summer strike. The NUT's conference rejected a proposed four

:07:53. > :07:56.days of strikes in the autumn, but has still to decide whether to walk

:07:57. > :08:02.out in June. The strike calls are part of a campaign over teachers'

:08:03. > :08:06.pay and workload. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

:08:07. > :08:09.have paid tribute to Australia's air force during the latest leg of their

:08:10. > :08:14.tour of the country. William and Kate met servicemen and women at an

:08:15. > :08:17.air base in Brisbane. They were even tempted to take the cockpit of a

:08:18. > :08:22.fighter jet. Our Royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell was watching

:08:23. > :08:29.events. They are Australia's defence forces

:08:30. > :08:35.and their loyalty is to the Crown. And so when William and Katherine

:08:36. > :08:41.visited a military base there was a full ceremonial welcome for them.

:08:42. > :08:45.The couple were in Queensland, the sunshine state and temperatures were

:08:46. > :08:49.well into the 80s. Cath rip had chosen a light -- Katherine had

:08:50. > :08:53.chosen a light summer dress, just for the heat you would imagine but

:08:54. > :09:01.not necessarily the thing when William invited her to climb into

:09:02. > :09:05.the cockpit of a jet fighter. You would look good in the back, said

:09:06. > :09:10.William. Everybody's looking, said Kate. But with William by now in the

:09:11. > :09:13.rear seat, she had little option. She eased herself carefully into the

:09:14. > :09:19.front part of the cockpit. That's the place where the person in charge

:09:20. > :09:24.sits, of course. In Brisbane, a crowd estimated by

:09:25. > :09:29.police at around 10,000, had a long wait for a short walkabout along one

:09:30. > :09:32.street. It was a brief, but intense encounter for the couple with the

:09:33. > :09:38.interest that people have in them and of course in baby George.

:09:39. > :09:41.Loyalty to the Crown as shown by the defence forces, fascination with

:09:42. > :09:50.celebrity, as we see here on the streets. Two sides of the modern

:09:51. > :09:53.monarchy. A family's outing to Longleat Safari

:09:54. > :09:56.Park took a dramatic turn when their car caught fire in the lion

:09:57. > :10:02.enclosure. Witnesses captured the moment yesterday when the car burst

:10:03. > :10:05.into flames. Rangers had rescued the passengers - a woman and two

:10:06. > :10:09.children - after clearing the lions from the enclosure. A spokesman for

:10:10. > :10:14.the park said the blaze was put out quickly and that neither people nor

:10:15. > :10:25.lions were hurt. Now all the sports news.

:10:26. > :10:28.Good evening. Peter Moores is back in charge of

:10:29. > :10:32.the England cricket team. He was forced out of the job in 2009 but

:10:33. > :10:35.he's been re-appointed as Head Coach after five years with county side

:10:36. > :10:38.Lancashire. He says he's very excited and very proud to get

:10:39. > :10:40.another opportunity. Ben Smith reports from Lords.

:10:41. > :10:44.After a Winter of Discontent for English cricket, is this the man to

:10:45. > :10:47.build a brighter future? Peter Moores is a face from the past but

:10:48. > :10:54.five years after being sacked by England, he is back in charge. He

:10:55. > :10:58.inher its a side that's licking its wounds after a Ashes humiliation by

:10:59. > :11:02.Australia. This is a team in need of motivation. If I am honest I don't

:11:03. > :11:10.think it's my job to lift them. It's a special thing to play for England,

:11:11. > :11:14.to pull on a sweater with three lions on it. The players have to

:11:15. > :11:17.know that if it doesn't feel special something's wrong. He saw off the

:11:18. > :11:22.challenge of England's one-day coach, Ashley Gyles who had been

:11:23. > :11:25.widely tipped to land the job. The captain welcomed the appointment

:11:26. > :11:30.today but admitted England have a way to go to regain their status as

:11:31. > :11:34.the best Test side in the world. It's going to be small steps and

:11:35. > :11:37.it's going to take time to rebuild, but we certainly have a huge amount

:11:38. > :11:41.of talent in the country. It's a really exciting time to be an

:11:42. > :11:48.England player. England have been here before, of course. In 2007

:11:49. > :11:52.Moores was seen as the man to lift England after a Ashes whitewash only

:11:53. > :11:57.for a row with Kevin Pietersen to cost him his job. Pietersen reacted

:11:58. > :12:02.to the news with a tongue in cheek messages this morning, saying:

:12:03. > :12:06.Everyone deserves a second chance. England must now hope that Moores

:12:07. > :12:12.has learned from the past. Pietersen won't be a factor with a clear

:12:13. > :12:17.message today that's no way back for England's former star batsman.

:12:18. > :12:31.England are close to appointing an assistant to Moores. England have

:12:32. > :12:34.gone back to the future with Moores. There were six matches in the

:12:35. > :12:38.Premier League today, all the goals follow the news on Match of the Day,

:12:39. > :12:42.but if you want the results now, here they come. Chelsea missed out

:12:43. > :12:45.on the chance to go top of the table after losing 2-1 at home to

:12:46. > :12:48.Sunderland. They remain bottom of the league, three points off safety

:12:49. > :12:52.but Fabio Borini's late winner from the penalty spot gave Jose Mourinho

:12:53. > :12:55.his first league defeat at Stamford Bridge in 78 games. Liverpool can go

:12:56. > :12:58.five points clear of Chelsea if they beat Norwich tomorrow.

:12:59. > :13:00.Elsewhere, it was goal-less between Aston Villa and Southampton. Cardiff

:13:01. > :13:03.drew with Stoke. Swansea's Wilfried Bony scored twice including the

:13:04. > :13:06.injury-time winner at Newcastle. Fulham lost 3-1 at Spurs to stay in

:13:07. > :13:10.the relegation zone, but Crystal Palace are safe after a 1-0 win at

:13:11. > :13:13.West Ham. In the Scottish Premiership,

:13:14. > :13:16.Champions Celtic were held to a draw at Motherwell. 3-2 up and with

:13:17. > :13:19.seconds to play, the visiting fans were celebrating but an injury time

:13:20. > :13:23.equaliser by John Sutton earned the home side a well-deserved point. In

:13:24. > :13:32.the other matches there were wins for Hearts, Partick Thistle, St

:13:33. > :13:35.Johnstone and St Mirren. Birmingham City ladies drew 0-0 in

:13:36. > :13:38.the first leg of their Champions' League semi-final. Playing in

:13:39. > :13:41.Solihull, England's Jade Moore came closest to breaking the deadlock

:13:42. > :13:43.against Swedish side Tureysu. The second leg will be played in Sweden

:13:44. > :13:46.next weekend. Lewis Hamilton was quickest yet

:13:47. > :13:49.again in his Mercedes securing pole position for tomorrow's Chinese

:13:50. > :13:53.Grand Prix. It's the third time in four races this season and the 34th

:13:54. > :13:57.time in his career that he'll start at the front of the grid - that

:13:58. > :14:02.breaks Jim Clarke's record for a British driver in Formula One.

:14:03. > :14:07.It was a tough session. I really enjoyed it. The car was feeling

:14:08. > :14:11.great. I think we definitely could be - we always have stuff we can

:14:12. > :14:14.improve on but the team have done a great job for this weekend. It's a

:14:15. > :14:18.good position for the race, I hope that we can follow through tomorrow.

:14:19. > :14:21.It's the first day of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield

:14:22. > :14:25.and Ronnie O'Sullivan made a very solid start in the defence of his

:14:26. > :14:28.title at the Crucible. He beat the Finnish qualifier Robin Hull 10-4

:14:29. > :14:35.and will now play Joe Perry or Jamie Burnett in the second round.

:14:36. > :14:39.That's all the sport. Thank you very much. That's it for

:14:40. > :14:45.now. You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News

:14:46. > :14:54.Channel. From me, for now, good night.

:14:55. > :15:02.Good evening. Most of us got to see some sunshine today. Northern areas

:15:03. > :15:07.will get the best of that tomorrow. One common theme tonight, it's going

:15:08. > :15:11.to be chilly again. Frost not as ex-tensive as last night. Across

:15:12. > :15:14.England and Wales a freshening breeze will see cloud moving in from

:15:15. > :15:15.the east as the night wears
